GM Lithrac |
Time for another Fort save, DC 16 this time (don't forget the bonuses from Endurance/Cold Weather Outfit, if Stian succeeds at at DC 15 Survival check he'll grant you another +2) from each of you. If you fail you suffer from hypothermia (similar effects as fatigued) and take Nonlethal damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1.
The trail begins to climb a ridgeline to the south beneath snow-laden trees. The prints of boots and horses mar the freshly fallen snow on the trail. As Stian is about to climb a small hill to follow the tracks, you hear loud voices in the cold. You easily discern three different voices that are arguing not far from you, on the other side of the small snow-laden hill.
Border Wood map updated.
Zadok Allendil |
"Be my guest, Stian." Zadok responds. "Yes, let's travel a bit further to see if we can find what killed him and then we'll take his body with on the way back."
Fort: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
"Does someone want to climb up and scout?" Zadok whispers in suggestion, clearing not volunteering himself.
Stian Ovesen |
Survival: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Fort: 1d20 + 4 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 4 + 5 + 2 = 17
"I'm not the most stealthy, but I could try to scout ahead." Stian whispers.
Stealth: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26 Or, you know, roll a "20".
GM Lithrac |
Treading with caution, Stian becomes one with nature as he reaches the top of the hill unseen, almost completely disappearing from view. From there, he can see three men dressed as bandits or raiders, arguing loudly over what appears to be some loot. They haven't detected him, too taken by their argument.
"That necklace is mine!"
"Ha! What are you, a damsel in distress? No, this is clearly Lady jewelry, so that excludes you from having it."
"Wait, what about me-"
Thorgull Kjalderssen |
Fort save: 1d20 + 3 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 3 + 5 + 2 = 30
"I feel really comfortable in these furs!"
Virgil Ardelean |
Fort: 1d20 + 2 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 + 2 + 2 = 18
Virgil seems to fight off the cold, thanks to the furs and his allies assistance.

Stian Ovesen |
Stian sneaks back to the party and relates what he seen. "Three men. Arguing over ladies jewelry. I suspect they are involved in the abduction. Should we all approach together or two of us circle around to surround them?"
Virgil Ardelean |
Virgil draws his rapier and gives it two mock swipes.
"If they're responsible for harming a lady they'll get their just deserts."
The duelist checks his attire before nodding to the others.
"You can flank around them if you like, I can take the direct approach and hold their attention for you to get in position."
-Posted with Wayfinder
Zadok Allendil |
"Just deserts? Like send them back to Qadira or something? If you say so. I say we just knock them out and take them back to town for some quality jail time."
Zadok nods. "I'll stay behind Virgil and provide some cover fire or healing as needed."
Thorgull Kjalderssen |
"Tell me when you wish to fight, and I'll summon an eagle to help you, folks!"
Virgil Ardelean |
Satisfied with the plan, Virgil draws his rapier loosely to his side. Starting to make his way up hill, the duelist takes his time allowing his allies to flank round. As he reaches the top and locates the thieves he yells out in greeting.
"Well hello good people. Sorry to interrupt you but I appear to have gotten turned around while out for a stroll. Would you be so kind as to help me find my way back to town?"

GM Lithrac |
The three men stop arguing as Virgil greets them so enthusiastically. They look at each other with a conniving look, then reply. "Sure, boy, we'll help you." they snigger with a sneer as they come closer. Their smug smile is wiped off their faces when they realize they've walked straight into an ambush!

Ambush map
Feel free to rearrange your tokens as you see fit for the ambush.
Thorgull Kjalderssen |
Thorgull begins to summon. "αξσΑΦὴφαἀ שדגגן"
Zadok Allendil |
Zadok stands up from his hiding position and fires his bow at the closest bandit!
shortbow: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6
Virgil Ardelean |
Virgil moves to engage the nearest bandit, rapier at the ready. With a flourish the swashbuckler brings the weapon up at his enemy.
"Not my best ruse, but it's served it's purpose."
Masterwork Rapier: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 181d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
The duellist then drops into a defensive stance should his foe counterattack.
If the bandit attack Virgil he will spend a point of panache to use the Opportune Parry and Riposte deed.
Masterwork Rapier parry: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Masterwork Rapier ripostes: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 181d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
GM Lithrac |
Stian's arrow misses the first raider, while Zadok's pierces another bandit's leg. Virgil steps in and finishes off the bandit Zadok wounded.
Meanwhile, Thorgull starts a long-winded incantation to summon a creature from the nether.
The two remaining raiders, seeing one of their numbers fall to an ambush, appear to panic!
Initiative - round 1
1. Thorgull, Stian, Virgil, Zadok
2. Raiders
As you may know Thorgull, since you started a 1 round casting time with only a standard action, finishing the spell will cost you this round's standard action, leaving you with a move action left (as well as the conjured creature's, of course).
Stian Ovesen |
Stian steps northeast and fires another arrow. This time, taking aim at the western man.
Totally forgot the MWK bow, Attack, PBS: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 5 + 1 = 23
Damage: 1d8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 2 + 1 = 10
Zadok Allendil |
Zadok yells out, "Don't let them get away! They may warn others of our coming!"
He tries to fire into the melee below.
shortbow: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (4) + 2 - 4 = 2
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3
GM Lithrac |
Stian's arrow pierces the man's throat as he was about to yell, ending his life prematurely. Zadok tries to accomplish the same feat, but with little success.
Initiative - round 1
1. Thorgull, Stian, Virgil, Zadok
2. Raider
Only one left! Thorgull is away for the week so I'll bot him if he doesn't post by the time Virgil does.
Thorgull Kjalderssen |
I can't access the map, sorry. Does the eagle have a standard action or only a move action? If he has, you can make the attack if I don't. Don't forget I have Augment Summoning ;)
At last, an eagle appears from the nether. Thogull backs away a little.
Virgil Ardelean |
Virgil steps in and raises the point of his rapier towards the remaining bandit.
"Yield. There's no reason for you to die here..."
Intimidate: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
GM Lithrac |
The eagle appears when you finish casting and has a normal round (standard and move, or full-round action).
As Virgil was about to drop a very scary line, his speech is interrupted by the squawk of a magnificent eagle summoned by Thorgull. The bandit doesn't even listen to the swashbuckler, since the bird of prey falls onto him to try and peck his eyes with holy righteousness!
Beak, smite: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 221d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Talon, smite: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Talon, smite: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
The raider manages to dodge both talons, but the beak cuts deep into his throat! Staggered by the powerful blow, the bandit surrenders, dropping his weapon!
"Alright, alright, I surrender! Call off your eagle, I beg you!"
Thorgull Kjalderssen |
For his remaining round, the eagle will stand proud on Thorgull's shoulders before vanishing from this plane.
Virgil Ardelean |
Virgil sheathes his rapier and tries to regain his posture after his blunder of a threat.
"You made the right choice. Now, why don't you tell us what happened and where you got your recent haul from."

GM Lithrac |
"I'll tell you everything - we're with Rokhar's band and we recently attacked a convoy escorting some high-up Taldan lady. We killed them good for sure! Err, I mean... Well, there's no point denying it anyway." shrugs the raider. "Me and the two berks there, we knew we had lost some of the loot in our hurry to return to the High Sentinel Lodge, so we went back, but didn't agree on how to split it."
"The High Sentined Lodge? It's not far from here, if you follow the tracks you'll get to it. It's where Rokhar and the men are. There are about ten bodies, though only half are able ones - half the men have taken ill, they're shaking so much that it looks like they're waving their swords instead of wielding them. And then there's Rokhar himself..." At this point, the man stops, a shiver going up his spine. Whatever threat you make, he refuses to say more about him, as he's dead scared of his boss.
"What say you, will you let me go now? I swear I won't go back to the others. I'm dead to them anyway..." begs the bandit.
Zadok Allendil |
Zadok whispers to his companions, "Well, he did cooperate. Perhaps we should let him go. I don't think we need worry about him." You might find yourselves surprised by the crazed elf's compassion.
Thorgull Kjalderssen |
"Well, I'd say he can go..." whispers back Thorgull.
Virgil Ardelean |
Virgil nods, but doesn't look convinced. After a moments thought he whispers a response.
"He did cooperate, but only when left with no other option. Plus, he still has the blood of innocents on his hands and no amount of cooperation excuses that. I suggest we take him with us, an extra body could be useful and if he proves himself we can speak in his defense back at the town?"
GM Lithrac |
The general consensus is to let the bandit go since he has no chance of hindering you further. He shows a deep gratitude! "Oh, thank you milord, I shan't be evil ever again! I promise! I shall make amends!"
You part ways and continue your path after searching the guards properly.

After climbing at least a hundred feet into the hills, the snowy trail finally levels off. In a clearing among the trees, a large wooden lodge overlooks a ravine spanned by a long rope bridge. Smoke rises from the lodge’s two snow-covered chimneys, and large woodpile is stacked against the outer wall. A small outbuilding stands east of the lodge, and a stone well nearly blanketed by snow is barely recognizable to the north. Several tracks lead southwest toward a detached stable.
Virgil Ardelean |
Virgil shakes his head, clearly disappointed by the decision to let the bandit go. Nevertheless, the duellist says nothing more about it.
As they approach the lodge the swordsman takes in the location.
"We should see if anyone is home."
Zadok Allendil |
"Be careful though. Make sure they don't have any lookouts or alarms." Zadok follows behind at the back of the group with his bow out.
Thorgull Kjalderssen |
Thorgull draws his crossbow and loads it with a bolt. "Yes, don't find yourself alone inside the melee. Again."
Virgil Ardelean |
Taking his allies advice, Virgil approaches the building cautiously.
Stealth: 1d20 + 3 - 1 ⇒ (13) + 3 - 1 = 15
Thorgull Kjalderssen |
Thorgull will stay and cover, like Zadok.
Virgil Ardelean |
I'm away visiting my stepdad atm so I can't update the map. Virgil is moving towards the closest visible door to the building.

GM Lithrac |
Stian gets closer to one of the windows, and contemplates what could very well be a dream for him at that precise moment: a warm living room where a roaring fire burns, the smell of food being cooked, and the sound of hearty laughter. He's able to discern many different male figures and voices inside, about a half-dozen. So far, none appear to have taken notice of his presence at the window.
At the same moment Virgil gets closer to the door, wading through the freshly fallen snow. The weather is still bad, but he can actually see the porch in front of him. He suddenly trips on a fragile string that was hidden in the snow when the sound of a crossbow being released is heard.
Crossbow: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (7) + 15 = 221d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7 Ouch... traps really hate you so far.
A split second later, the empty crossbow falls on the porch from its perch, dragging a string of attached pots and pans with it. A very loud noise echoes in the cold, leaving little doubt about your presence!

Thorgull Kjalderssen |
Thorgull begins to summon.
"Ηελλας κελ μανκ δαδρεσσ!"
Virgil Ardelean |
Virgil curses under his breath, drawing his rapier has he retreats to regroup with the other. As the duelist shifts through the snow he glances painfully at the wound.

If you maintain your ready action we'll keep the rolls you've already made, no need to reroll them every round.
Also Virgil, please don't forget to update your Hp when you come back home.
There is a lot of noise and hushed voice coming from the inside, but no one exits the main building.
