Cameron Hawkwinter |
Cameron's expression softens as he comes to the conclusion that the girl seems genuine. It didn't hurt that she was pleasing on the eye too.
Before Nessa had a chance to answer, Cameron walked alongside the pair and says with a grin, "Not in the biological sense no. Still in many ways you're close to the mark there!"
Zahel Greyhawk |
Nessa seemed to have everything under control. And yet...
The investigator sighed. Maybe he was just getting paranoid (after all, it was part of the job), but things looked like they were settling... Quickly.
A cyphermage, looking for a job as a waitress?
I may be wrong to be suspicious, but I'm curious about her motivations.
If Zahel knows something about cyphermages:
Knowledge (arcana)+ Free Inspiration: 1d20 + 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (16) + (2) + 7 = 25
Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
DM Lil" Eschie |
@Zahel: what is the Perception roll for? As for the Sense motive check, you can read Cameron's spoiler (posted yesterday)
After a quick walk through the streets of Riddleport, you find yourself at Caithlinn's house. Knocking and entering, as she knows she can do, Nessa is cannonballed by Sylee, who hugs her knees, nearly making her fall on her bottom
Mooooommmmmy! You're eating with us today?
The little girl seems totally happy, and in way better health than when you bring her to Caithlin.
Nessa Meretrix |
Nessa stayed on her feet only because she mantled her wings, the force of them opening pushing her forward enough to stay on her feet. She knelt and picked up Sylee before giving her a kiss on the cheek. Propping the little girl on one hip she said, "Yes honey, I've got the time to eat with you before going back to work." Still holding her daughter she turned to Samaritha and said, "This is Sylee, my daughter. Sylee, this is Samaritha, she's going to help care for you while I'm at work."
Cameron Hawkwinter |
Cameron tells Sylee, "I don't know Samaritha well but I do know she's nice and clever too. Be good to her and this will turn out alright.". He grins at everyone before walking off.
A little later he talks to Caitlyn, and with a wry expression he states the obvious, "I'm not quite sure why but it seems I'm still alive. I feel strangely happy about that..."
DM Lil" Eschie |
Caithlinn simply smiles and kisses Cameron gently, on the lips, then she says
That means I'm glad too that you are alive, if you didn't understand the silent message. Now excuse me, it seems Nessa is bringing more guests into my house without me knowing first. A bad habit from her younger years..But I won't blame her, having done the same.
She welcomes Samaritha to her house
I guess you are all hungry? So let's eat all together. Sylee, dress the table with your mom and Samaritha, dear. You will show her the house later.
Coming back to Cameron, Alayna, Zahel and Therric
Nice to see all of you back. What's new? In what kind of troubles did you set yourselves into this time? Cameron just told me he was recently afraid for his life... Please soothe the heart of an old woman.
There is a playful smile on the elf's red lips. she looks at Cameron and brushes the corner of her lips with the tip of her finger
Cameron Hawkwinter |
Cameron winks and remarks, "Nessa does seem to have found a rather earnest young lady, one who apparently likes children. She has an education and may well make a fine governess for little Sylee. This has the air of serendipity about it, perhaps its part of the grand design. If so we'd be foolish to look a gift horse in the mouth."
He then walks with Caithlinn to talk to the others.
Nessa Meretrix |
Nessa helped Sylee set the table for dinner while the others chatted and, when that was done, said to Sylee a bit shyly, "I have a surprise for you later Sylee, if we still have time after eating before I need to go back to work. I hope you'll like it." When Cameron and Caithlinn returned from their private discussion Nessa noticed the lipstick easily. She smirked slightly and looked to Caithlinn in amusement but otherwise said nothing.
Taking 10 on the sense motive.
Therric Morant |
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Therric blinks when he glances at Cameron's mouth.
"Uh, Cameron?" He taps the corner of his own mouth.
"Nice to see all of you back. What's new? In what kind of troubles did you set yourselves into this time? Cameron just told me he was recently afraid for his life... Please soothe the heart of an old woman."
"Well..." He glances over at Sylee, a bit worried that she might be listening.
"...ma'am, we're planning on doing some more investigations into Saul's activities. He's been acting more and more suspicious by the day, and I'm definitely starting to believe he's not being entirely honest in his dealings with us."
Cameron Hawkwinter |
Cameron blinks at Therric, Whatever did he mean?! A sudden realization strikes and his mouth briefly describes an O. After wiping his lips with the back of the sleeve he nods his thanks.
"...ma'am, we're planning on doing some more investigations into Saul's activities. He's been acting more and more suspicious by the day, and I'm definitely starting to believe he's not being entirely honest in his dealings with us."
Cameron was pleased he wasn't the only one who didn't trust Saul further than they could throw him. "He's not exactly subtle about it either, placing a goon on the basement door while we manhandled those barrels below. To be honest I was expecting more fire from him, maybe a knife in the dark. That's not to say we didn't have an exciting day. I don't think Saul arranged it but we had a bit of a todo at the docks over Saul's barrels, had the potential to get pretty nasty that. Still Alayna was feeling Merciful and I have to admit I approve."
Alayna Rochelle |
"Well, mercy aint the right word fer it. More like I 'ave seen what 'appens when a crew don't ever leave a body alive - the ships they take all fight ta tha death and, really it be an easier fight when they surrender all fast like."
DM Lil" Eschie |
Never make the error of trusting Saul.He was one of the Crimelords of Riddleport, and would do anything to become one again. Maybe he isn't subtle everytime. Maybe he does errors, like everyone. But he nonetheless dangerous. But now, let's have a seat, and enjoy a meal.
She takes Alayna by the hand, casually, and whispers something in her ear
I hope you like fish. Good for your health.
She winks at the blonde piratess
Cameron Hawkwinter |
"That's most kind." replies Cameron thinking of delicious pastries before adding sadly, "Regrettably we can't stay for long after, since we're supposed to be on duty tonight." Not for the first time Cameron wonders why he bothers to turn up for work at the goblin.
DM Lil" Eschie |
Sowwy, gone most of the afternoon to see Suicide Squad with my daughter. I'm more of a Marvel Fan. Only Harley Quinn was good.
I understand. But you can still enjoy a warm meal before you go, I think.I dare to say my cook is better than the Goblin's. And Nessa will be able to put Sylee to bed for a nap after eating. They will enjoy this opportunity to spend some time together.
After a few minutes, your plates and glasses are full. Samaritha and Sylee talks together already, while Caithlinn takes the role of the gracious host, taking interest in everyone of you-but spending a little more time with Cameron.
It's sad you'll have to go so soon. You really should ask for a night of, from time to time...
The elf says that to the company at large.. but her eyes are set on the young priest's face.
Cameron Hawkwinter |
Cameron nods, "Mmm It's been a while since we had some time off, we should do something about that. Besides you know what they say, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy."
Yes lots of shenanigans! There's a cellar to explore.
Therric Morant |
"Honestly, I'm starting to consider finding a new job. If Saul's really as crooked as I think, I'd be better off looking for work elsewhere."
Therric rubs his shoulder and winces. "I'm still a bit sore from the whole 'ghoul fever' thing..."
DM Lil" Eschie |
Caithlinn looks at the paladin.
Maybe you are in the Gold Goblin to do the good thing, Therric? At least you can keep an eye on Saul while you're there. And for the "ghoul fever", I'm sure the worst is behind you know, even if it isn't easy yet for you. You don't feel still hungry after that meal, arent you Therric?
Zahel Greyhawk |
@DM Lil" Eschie: just in case something was off about her, I guess ^^"
"If we have the opportunity to take a Crimelord down, let's not waste it. The more we gain his trust, the easier it will be."
Zahel looked at the paladin, visibly concerned:
"Is the disease still affecting you?"
Ready!
Therric Morant |
"Only its after-effects. The rest of me needs a bit of time to recover, but I'll be able to stick with you guys for the time being."
Still suffering 1 point of DEX damage and 2 points of CON damage.
Cameron Hawkwinter |
Shall we head on over to the goblin for the evening shift?
DM Lil" Eschie |
After the meal at Caithlinn, Nessa spends some time with her adoptive daughter, while you chat or rest a little
PLease promise me you will take some rest tomorrow. Tell Saul you're sick, and ou need a day in bed, it isn't a lie. or I'll ask Nessa to tie you to a bed and I'll come myself to take care of you, naughty boy...
Of course, she says that with a wink and a smile, but who knows what she truly has in mind?
Later, you go back to the Gold Goblin, which is bustling with activity.
Two-Thumbs, the barman, is readying as many glasses and bottles as he can.
Everyone is givin" the old place a good washing, but with not much enthousiasm, as they know the Goblin will soon be full of people with dirty shoes, dirty clothes and even dirtier manners.
The mechanical games are inspected, cards are dealt and practised.
You spot Saul in the room, shouting orders to everyone.
For once, he nearly seems happy and smiling.
He even welcomes you!
Ah, my dream team of loyal employees!
He winks to Cameron
Hope you enjoyed your time off? Tonight will be a very busy night, I hope to make at least two hundred gold, from the games and drinks! I know, Cameron, I am maybe a little overconfident. Would you mind calling the blessing of your goddess before the evening start, when everyone as finished the cleaning? Meanwhile, don't be afraid to help your fellas, grab a broom and bucket, give the Gold Goblin a precious shine! you had some rest, no get back to work!
You see one or two men coming from the cellars and rolling barrels on the wet floor, and hear Two Thumbs saying.
Put these two behind the bar. It will be a long night! Not sure It will be enough... What do you think Boss?
You are the barman, you are paid to know about theses things.
barks back Saul.
Just be sure every barrel who comes upstairs is marked with the Gold Goblin insignia. I don't want any problem with so called "legitimate owners".
Cameron Hawkwinter |
Cameron was suspicious, 'Wait! Did Saul just wink at me? What the heck, two hundred gold that's a lot. Oh he wants a blessing does he?'
Cameron climbs on top a table and in a loud voice he offers up a prayer, "May the dice roll true and decks be dealt fairly, may Lady Luck grace all who gamble in these halls, and grant them the courage to take the chances offered to us with both hands. As the dreamer says, you've got to be in it to win it!"
As he climbs back down, he fingers his butterfly badge and wonders, 'What's up with Saul? Why a sudden desire for a bumper pay day? As if I can't guess - Lymas Smeed wants his money back.'

"Pease promise me you will take some rest tomorrow. Tell Saul you're sick, and you need a day in bed, it isn't a lie. Or I'll ask Nessa to tie you to a bed and I'll come myself to take care of you, naughty boy..."
Therric's eyes widen a bit.
And before he can stop himself, he replies: "Is that a promise?"
He promptly bites his tongue and looks away sheepishly. "Er... sure. I'll ask him for the day off tomorrow."
As Saul welcomes them and tells them to get ready for tonight, he approaches the Gold Goblin's owner. "Excuse me, sir? I had a bit of a brush with ghoul fever a night or two ago, and I'm still kinda recovering from it. I'm in good enough shape to work tonight, but could I perhaps take tomorrow off to recover? I mean, I'm not exactly going to be as effective in warding off cheaters & troublemakers if I'm not at my best."
Diplomacy?: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20
DM Lil" Eschie |
Saul answers quickly to Theeric, but not too harshly, given his usual rough attitude
Getting a whole day off? Do you think I'm made of gold? Do you think I take a day off? You can take your day off, but don't expect me to pay you for it! Just do your work tonight, make sure people don't break the place, and you can take you damn day off!
On a side note: @Naughty Therric! You ought to be spanked! ^^
Therric Morant |
Eschie: Well, Therric has 8 Wisdom. He doesn't really think before he speaks sometimes. :)
The squire breathes a sigh of relief. "Thanks, sir."
Nessa Meretrix |
When she had the doll in hand she looked at Sylee and said, "I thought about getting you another doll but then I realized you really love this one. So I figured out what to do instead. Now, I need you to be very quiet while I do this, I have to focus really hard and you know how hard that is for me. Can you do that for me?"
After she had Sylee's promise Nessa dropped into the throws of a spell. Her words were sibilant and long while her gestures were not unlike those of a tailor. A green light began to flow from her hands and wrap around the doll causing it to float in the air and then more strands went to her pack and pulled out some fresh fabric. Over the next ten minutes the light slowly worked to blend the new fabric to the doll and then pulled forth the arm which was merged perfectly with the broken one repairing the damage. Then it pulled forth the clothes and put them on the body and, with a final bit of inspiration, duplicated the holy symbol of Desna in miniature around the dolls neck.
When the spell was finished Nessa relaxed and the green light went away as the doll plopped into her lap. She looked at her daughter as she held out the doll and said, "Surprise!" She was nervous as she watched for Sylee's reaction and she hoped that her daughter wasn't upset with her for this.
Welcome to mending, making little girls happy, I hope, since now.
After heading out to work with the others Nessa was rather surprised at Saul's good mood. It was unusual and more than a bit disturbing. His lack of a fit towards Therric's request was a rather obvious sign of how good his mood really was. She went about marshaling the girls and making sure they were doing all they could to entice the gamblers to both drink and spend more. She wanted the evening to go very well.
diplomacy: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
DM Lil" Eschie |
She puts the doll down, slowly, as if it was the second most precious thing in her life, and she buries herself in her mommy's breasts, crying freely.
Nessa knows for a fact that she is the most precious thing in Sylee's whole, young life.
Samaritha wipes her own tears away and let daughter and mother alone, closing the door behind her.
Cameron Hawkwinter |
Cameron walks past Therric and whispers soemthing.
Resplendent in his white river boat style suit, Cameron tends to his flock. It seems the lure of cheap ale and gambling was strong, Cameron wasn't entirely sure he approved, ale and spirits clouded the mind taking inhibitions away. Gambling and games of chance were supposed to be a sacrament not Saul's slush fund. Still at least he could keep an eye on the tables. With practiced ease he performed a complicated four deck shuffle, involving cutting the deck in mid air. Deck well and truly randomized he sat down and attended to the serious business of poker.
Profession: Gambler: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Zahel Greyhawk |
One thing was sure about Saul: his good mood wasn't communicative. Zahel did his best to keep him in his field of view, while watching out for any acccident or cases of cheating.
Nessa Meretrix |
When Nessa found the two they could see tears tracks in her eyes from her own weeping at the affection the girl showed her and said, "Sylee loved her present, she's sleeping now." She seemed kind of awkward now that Samaritha was here, not as relaxed as normal. She looked at the woman and said to her, "I fed Zith before I left the room so she won't need to eat for a while now. You don't need to feed the snake, I'll make sure that is done on my own, Sylee knows when the snake should eat and knows how to feed her safely so she can if do it if she wants to on those days. The key for the cage is kept on the highest shelf at the very back corner out of Sylee's reach."
DM Lil" Eschie |
@Nessa: Samaritha and Caithlinn will take care of Sylee. You notice Samaritha's smile is even warmer than before when she looks at you.
An hour or so later, it seems that Saul's plan is working.
You have never seen the Gold Goblin so crowded. There are many gamblers, some regulars, most occasional.
Alcohol is flowing, and some people obviously came only to drink and get drunk at a cheaper price.
Therric Morant |
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10 Nope, Therric's oblivious.
Therric keeps himself busy keeping the other customers from getting too rowdy.
Nessa Meretrix |
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Nessa was being kept quite busy at her job, far to busy to notice anything beyond the normal chaos of stray hands, taking orders, and otherwise trying to tempt players into spending money they shouldn't. Anything out of the ordinary was, for now, beyond her notice.
Cameron Hawkwinter |

Zahel Greyhawk |
Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19
Making sure that he was seen by the nearest guard, Zahel creeped behind the thief, and suddenly placed his hand on his shoulder.

Alayna Rochelle |

With a grace born of storm tossed ship's rigging, Alayna fairly dances the drinks to the patrons. "Oi, ya louts! Ran a gauntlet of gropin' shippies ta get yer grog, now praise Besmara to curse yet foes an' praise Desna ta give the coin ta yer own purse!" She winks and disappears back into the crowd.
Cameron Hawkwinter |
Well there's about a 2% chance* of making all of those rolls, so Saul was pretty unlikely to actually make all that money ;) TBH he doesn't really deserve to get his grubby mitts on it either!
Name, roll needed, probability
zahel 11+ P = 0.45
therrick 11+ P = 0.45
nessa: 12+ P = 0.4
alayna 12+ P = 0.4
cameron 15+ P = 0.25
Natalya 15+ P = 0.25
Multiplying all those = 0.45 * 0.45 * 0.4 * 0.4 * 0.25 * 0.25 = 0.002025 or just over 2%
Natalya Artemisa |

Now listen 'ere matey, s'not polite like to wander 'roun an establishment like this wiv all yer glowy magic fright'ning the cards and dice eh?!
She gently chides the man
P'raps you can take a wander to the bar and buy me a drink whilst yer let ya spells fade away?
She smiles
