Hal's eyes go distant. "Warnings and visions are not given lightly by the gods. You're grandsire and now you choose the path of wisdom versus ignorance." The elf nods appreciation, the dwarf's estimation in his eyes ratcheting upwards. "Very well." He motions for Dolgrin to lead the way and gives his hip a pat to summon Inceku to his side.

A look back to Krucina and he nods for her to join them. "Your days and nights spent skulking thru the shadows for survival are over. Now you set your eyes upon something of consequence and merit. Seize it and better your mark on this world. You've already proven your merit to me."

Along the way Hal considers what he knows locally about the Cyphermages. They were a group he'd discounted as meddling fools. Yet fools have a way of stumbling their way to cataclysm...

Cameron is mildly offended by Feldur's words, 'As if I'd go back on my word?!' but he doesn't show it. Instead he shrugs, "I wouldn't have made the offer if I didn't mean it. Sometimes you gotta go with your luck, double or nothing, know what I mean?"

Of course there was a lot more than just money riding on this, there was reputation and perhaps the chance to take an extended excursion. Time that was needed to find out what really happened to Milon.

Feldur answers Cameron

Of course I understand. We're lucky to have an holy man of Desna in our establishment, and someone who's not afraid to gamble too. You've done a good job so far, son. You know I mean it.

Alayna:
The imp in its cage looks at you strangely, using its strange, guttural tongue. Then, it speaks to you, switching to common

Alayna, I wonder what this dwarf has in mind, and I would like to know. Could you ask him discreetly when he comes back?

At first, you feel happy to help the small creature, and can't wait to follow its suggestion ... then you realise that something is wrong. Your love for freedom refuse to bow and obey the imp.

Nessa and Sylee spend some quality time together. Work will start this evening, and hopefully Nessa will have plenty to do. Suddenly her adoptive girl asks her a question

Why do you wear these strange clothes, mommy? Aren't you afraid to catch a cold? I don't wanna you to be sick...

....................................................................
To the Cyphermages

after an half an hour walk, you reach the Cyphermage's place. A polite young man, in his late twenties, ask you why you come here, and after your answer and the paiement of a small twenty gold pieces fee, walks you to a small library. The young man shows you the part of the library pertaining to legends and otherwordly creatures.

You can check all these books, but be careful. And be quiet.

A white haired woman sits crosslegged in the corner, a book on her knees. She smiles at you and nods quickly, then goes back to her own studies.

Taken aback by the sudden question, Nessa tries to think of a way to explain this so Sylee will understand without having to explain other things to the child. After a minute she says, "These strange clothes are a costume of sorts. My job here requires that I dress like this to try and convince the customers to pay less attention to what they are doing by getting them to look at me. This makes them more likely to keep spending money which makes the casino more money, and the more money the casino makes the more money I get paid for us to live on. As for getting a cold, it may be a bit chilly in here now, but once the place becomes crowded it won't be cold anymore, it'll be really warm. And do you know what I can do if I do get cold?" Nessa reaches out and pulls Sylee into her lap then folds her wings down around them both, "I can fold my wings around us both and snuggle with you to keep warm!" Nessa tickles Sylee a moment and then hugs her and plants a kiss on the top of the child's head before she says, "As for getting sick, well, we all get sick from time to time, and now we both have someone to help take care of us when that happens, I have you, and you'll have me!"

20 gp to look at books? This place _is_ a den of crime!

Dolgrin growls at the need to pay to access books rather than a scholar's mind directly, but remains calm on the off chance he would be able to find what he was looking for between the covers of the tomes they allowed him to access. He plans to talk to one of these cyphermages soon enough should he not find what he needed in the books.

Start researching ancient legends. Key words: The Blot - ancient evil - elves - demons - devils. Hoping for some cross-references.

If he can't find anything he'll talk to the woman.

Not sure what more there is for Cameron to do right now. I guess he's going to hire Lavin Daebriss.

The woman looks at Dolgrin with suspicion, then interest, as the dwarf starts reading books.

The Blot is too recent to be the subject of a book. Of course people in the city are talking, creating theories about the what, the who and even sometimes the why, but no serious author has written a book (yet).

"Ancient Evil" seems to be more popular, but too vague, as some books speak about necromancy ("Death and Beyond"; "Cheating Pharasma","Bone Servants", and so on) one about demons and devils ("The Dark Jest"), some about obscure cults and known religions ("Honoring the Pale Princess", "Pain", "Cults of Besmara"), some even about dragons ("the Scales of Misfortune"; "Rahkelznar, the Red Wyrm"...)

"Elves": there are books about famous elven mages ("Famous Elven Mages", "Arcanes Masters", "those damned pointed ears"..) about their religion- there are six well worn tomes about Calistria's teachings, most of them with sketches-some books about "nature magic" ("Simple remedies from the forests" "Herbs and Mushrooms" "Magic by Moonlight"..), a thin book about their history (tome 3 only), another one on Elf cooking (an oddity), an elfic-common dictionnary in seven tomes... Plenty to read!

Demons and Devils: the subject must be too touchy. Only "the Dark Jest" is displayed for reading.

it will takes you days to read all that. But of course, maybe Hal and Krucina would like to help you...

In the Gold Goblin, as the final preparations are done for the evening, four guards enter the place, looking grim.

Riddleport Gendarmes. We have a few questions.

Keeping his face neutral, Cameron wonders, 'Isn't the boss supposed to pay this lot off? He did pay his dues right?'

He asks, "What appears to be the problem officers?"

All the time he thinks furiously, 'I could think of any one of a dozen things this might be about, given the events of the past fortnight. Still this *IS* riddle port, knocking a few heads together is of no consequence, provided the dues have been paid...'

We're seeking someone. Some Martigan's fella. Heard he was last seen at the Gold Goblin, then poofed out. An ol" man, who's got banned from most of Riddleport's gambling hall. His wife and children haven't seen or heard about him for too long, it seems.

Cameron, Nessa (Dc10+):
The gendarme who talked listen to you quietly, his eyes looking around. It seems quite strange to you that the disappearance of someone like Martigan would get the honors of an investigation. But maybe this guard is just doing his job? With the Blot, there are strange things happening in Riddleport theses days after all...

Did the officer say that to anyone in particular?

The hairs on the back of Cameron's neck stand up, and he wonders 'What's going on? Why do they care? If this was Absalom then I'd have no problem believing they care about Martigan, but this is Riddleport... What's their angle, is this some kind of hustle?'

Before saying anything he double checks, are they really who they say they are?

No, he just ask around.
@Dolgrin, Hal/Krucina: nothing new?

Cameron:
It seems to you they are real gendarmes. They suspect something-and everyone, as this is Riddleport. The fact that they investigate about Martigan is still strange. How would they know? What do they know exactly? They probably had inside information. The Gendarme doesn't seems to care that much about Martigan.

Trying to keep his composure, and acutely aware that time is ticking away, Cameron says, "Officer I know you're a busy man, and as you can see we are too. No offense to Martigan's relatives but I doubt he rates the time of one extremely busy Gendarme, let alone four. I'd like to help you with your inquiries but I'm not really sure what it is you're actually looking for..."

Sorry. The weekend ran long. Also, I'll be offline tomorrow, since it's Canada Day. That may also affect the rest of my week, but I can't say for sure.

Looking at the pile of potential books he would have to read through, Dolgrin tries to organize them more efficiently, looking for instances where the subjects he is looking for appears more than once.

So cross-referencing: ("Ancient Evil" OR "Demons/Devils") AND ("Elves"). I'm not bothering with ("Ancient Evil" and "Demons/Devils") since there'll likely be a lot of overlap there.

Hoping to be able to reduce the size of the research to something more managable, Dolgrin sets to it. He does pause for a moment to inquire to the lady nearby about whether she is or knows of those who have been studying "the Blot", since he is interested in their theories. Considering the Blot's been here around the same time granfather pointed me here... Perhaps it is related to this ancient evil or elves or something...

Dolgrin buries himself into books again

Considering you take 20 in relevant Knowledge (Arcana)

Dolgrin:
It take you some time and most of your patience, but you notice a few names common to your chosen references:

Kalmisha Dak"Orel: an ancient mage and priest of Nethys, this elf woman tried to become a lich, believing her dedication to balance would help her get throught the centuries with her sanity intact. She was wrong, and was supposed to be destroyed a "few" (elf point of view) centuries ago.

Vrenarius: a mage who was still active only a century ago in the area. More a cold blooded mercenary than a true evil mage, he was nevertheless regulary using necromancy and evil extra planar allies to strike fear in the heart of his foes and get the upper hand in a fight. He was killed by another elf, with a sword forged by the reputed dwarf runesmith Khulgrim Steelweaver.

Livit Dak" Orel: either an impostor or someone distantly related to Kalmisha, he was, technically, an half elf, but was as evil as two elves. He was killed more than 60 years ago in this very town of Riddleport, after his alliance with a succubus went badly. The man was, among other things, a serial killer and rapist of women, and a mage of no small talent.

There are a few more minor names, perhaps a dozen total. But this number pales in comparison with the evil that (human) men do.

Hal and Krucina notice that the woman seems interested in your small, strange trio, and don't even bother with hiding her curiosity.

....................................................................

The guard now talks directly to Cameron, with fire in his eyes

Don't try to look sillier than you truly are, you won't manage. Personally, I don't give a rat's a** about this Martigan, whoever he might be. Maybe he went away without his wife and kids knowing, maybe the casinos wanted to make an example out of him, maybe some pirate ship abducted him. Let's say I heard that sh** happened here a few nights ago, and that it was the last place Martigan was seen alive. I know that, in Riddleport, "accidents" happen. I was ordered to investigate the Gold Goblin, and if I can give some answers to his family, any answers, maybe it won't be a f**** sh*** day like the day before and probably tomorrow. Trouble is, my f***** Captain didn't even bothered to gimme the name and adress of Martigan's people, so even if I got some answers I don't know who and where I can deliver them. So let's say we both know that no brass into the Gendarmes care for the answers, but they just want me to ask questions, and they want you to s*** your pants, to know that you might gonna get it. I've seen many bad boys, and you ain't one. So do you know something about Martigan? I could beat you to death, tellin" you have tried to pick on me. I'll got other honorable citizen testimony to back up my words, and you'll only got a cell or a cold grave. Don't waste my time anymore and tell me the truth. I'd appreciate.

As she approaches she turns on her full charm, her hips rolling, her wings clasped about her, just above her breasts, and her tail swaying sinuously behind her as she approaches. The elder seems more plausible than the latter... undeath can be a tricky thing to end... Still... not really anything that I can follow... at the moment.

For those books and scrolls he'll dig a bit deeper than see how his people are involved. Could thsee pages detail some of the early exploits of my father's group?

That's your last chance to say the truth about that Martigan's fella. I can close your lil" gambling den and give you hard time until you spill the beans. I can turn the place upside down, until I find something, anything, that could be illegal. And I bet I'll find something.

The woman answers back to Hal with an hard smile

I stare because you never know who you will see in this place. It's been decades since I've last seen a fetchling, and it was stone dead. Besides, seeing a dwarf and an elf working together isn't that common. Especially as neither of you looks like a practician of the arcane arts. As for the Blot... I've heard a few theories, most of them ridiculous. A link to another plane, most of the time, even if no one can agree to which plane it should be linked. No divination magic has worked on the Blot. So the Cyphermages are just either pretending not to care, or answer gibberish, praying no one will have a clue before them, or see through their lies and deception.

Have to admit I don't really know what we should do about these gendarmes. Seems this is a political thing, and it's really about Saal not Martigan.

There seem to be a few options, none of which are good:
1. Tell them what happened, and presumably the guard Hans gets hung or worse
2. Tell them a lie, I guess they'd see through that sooner or later and we'd get in deep trouble
3. Tell them nothing, we make an enemy
4. Kill them, we make an enemy and there are probably alignment consequences followed in short order by vast numbers of more gendarmes.
5. Find some dirt on this Sergeant Drexell and blackmail him - that'll backfire I suspect

Option 3 seems the least worse, but it'll come back to haunt us.

You're right, Cameron, it's totally political. From your last Sense Motive roll, you think the truth might be the least worse with the Sarge. Or a big convincing lie, maybe, but that would be taking chances...

Cameron glances at Alayna, "Aye I have a feeling this is for Saal's benefit, but something tells me he's indisposed right now. Still this gentleman," the contempt in Cameron's voice could cut stone, "requires an explanation for the official record such as it is."

Cameron turns to face Sergeant Drexell and tells him straight, "Martigan was an idiot. The sort of idiot that racks up huge debts only to find out he's a worse theif than husband, if you can believe it. To cut a tedious story short, he was caught red handed leaving yonder door with a fist full of stolen coins. Naturally he got knocked on his noggin for his pleasure by a guard. Apparently he was knocked a little too hard and he passed away. Now I'm sure you're going to ask why this wasn't reported. Well go take a good look at the allys further on down the street, good chances there will be half a dozen dead somewhere under all the garbage. This ain't exactly Absalom. At least we had the decency to see he had a proper burial. I hope you're not going to suggest Casinos should just let thieves go. That will cause merry hell when the others find out... Of course I could ask where exactly were you and yours when we needed you, but that would be a waste of everyone's time wouldn't it? Well you got what you can for, I'm going to ask you to leave now."

It would accurate to describe Cameron as annoyed.

Dolgrin raises an eyebrow at the woman's frankness. "It could be even more surprising the elf working with me, considering my grandfather's research implied that elves could be behind an ancient evil that could destroy us. Still, that would be 'elves' as a group. This particular individual has proven to be trustworthy. I am Dolgrin Hammerfist," he continues, introducing himself, "and I, myself, have been trained in some aspects of the arcane arts, if not its practice, to better be able to combat it, should it be encountered, although I do have some proper training in planar studies." A link to another plane... Interesting idea, and one that she says is held by the majority...

"What I find interesting is your view on the Cyphermages. I apologize for having thought that you were one of them, and I thank you for your frank opinion on both them and any potential theories they may have on the Blot. It will save us from wasting even more time after what we have spent here, finding little of use," he finishes waving his hand at the books they had been pouring through.

Gold Goblin

Sergeant Drexell stays right where he is, let Nessa go with her child, and asks again to Cameron, while a girl from the staff brings Nessa's note to Larur

And do you, per chance, know where this Martigan was buried? So I can tell his family, if ever I find them, where they can spit on his grave if they want? As for the "accident" in itself, let say that in Riddleport gambling halls have their own juridiction, more or less, about what happen inside their walls. I'm not happy with that, but that's the way it's going.

He nods to Cameron and Alayna, and the guards are ready to go.
Of course, on the threshold of the door, he faces Cameron again

So you're working for Saul Vandercastin, uh? You might need all Desna's blessings...

He winks to the priest, but there's no amusement on his face.

Cyphermages Library

Inside the library, the woman laughs

Oh, but I am a Cyphermage myself. That's never stopped me to keep my eyes open about our mistakes and weaknesses. It never occured to you that your grandfather might be wrong? It's always dangerous to generalise fear and suspicion to the extend of a whole race. At least you are wise enough to trust a particular individual among the elfin race. If you want to hate a race, I would say human are the worst, sometimes. Trouble is, sometimes hey are capable of the best to. Maybe if you told me what you are searching, I could help you? I'm probably even more familiar with old books than you are with your own big axe. You're seeking something about outer planes? About evil elves?

She turns abruptly to Krucina, and changes subject
Say, dear, are you able to cast minor magic? Or greater spells? I'd like to test something...

Temple:

It doesnt take long for Nessa to walk to the Temple. Sylee's eyes are wide open with surprise and curiosity, as always, but she can't keep her mouth shut, asking some interesting/embarrassing questions...

This is your home too, mommy? It's sooooo big! Are they servants? Look Mommy, she has no clothes on! Will I have nice big beeboos like you when I'll be bigger? Do you think I can give some mice to eat to the snake? And how many mices can you stuff in your snake? Mommy, why are theses two men kissing?

Nessa laughs at the string of questions and addresses them as they come, "Yes hon, this is where I have lived my entire life and it is big, I am pretty sure there are even areas I haven't been in yet." When they see the naked woman, who smiles at Sylee and waves, Nessa says, "That's not entirely unexpected, it happens a lot here." She flushes a bit at the next question and says, "Aren't you a little young to be worrying about that? To be honest I don't know honey, we'll just have to see."

As the questions about Zith begin Nessa adopts a slightly sterner tone, "We'll see, she won't need fed again for a while still but I promise one day I'll let you drop one in for her. I need you to be very careful with Zith, she is a very poisonous snake and if she bites you it could easily kill you, and I don't think either of us wants that, I know I'd be so sad if I lost you. Maybe one day, when she knows you better, you might be able to pet her, but not right now." As they enter the main area and see the two men kissing Nessa simply laughs and says, "Why, they are in lust of each other. Not to be confused with love, though they might be that too."

As they go, Nessa asks around for information on this Sergeant Drexell. She looks for anything about his character and whether he has done anything that might be usable against him if it came to it.

Diplomacy (gather Info) take 10= 19

Nessa:
It takes you nearly two hours to get a few information on Sergeant Drexell. This particular Gendarme is not very well known in the vicinity, which means he must be quite honest and with more virtues than vices. He does his best to enforce the law when and where his superiors let him do. He had some troubles with the underworld, because sometimes he wants to investigate some crimes his superiors don't want him too. It's a known fact that he can't stand violent pimps, wife beaters and rapists. Calistrians had in the past invited him to their ranks, out of respect for his vindictive ways, but he firmly refused, in very colored words. Some prostitutes are known to be his snitches.

Alayna turns to Cameron, "Well, mayhap 'e is tha' kind o' guard. 'onest I mean. Just wanted ta' know, or mayhap he just wanted to see 'ow our beams ar' layed?" She shrugs, not entirely sure what to make of the goodly sergeant.

Having accomplished her goals, Nessa brings Sylee with her back to the Golden goblin and goes to Larrur. Once she finds him she gives her report, "I found out what I could on that Sergeant Drexell individual. Seems he's one of the more honest gendarmes there are, as long as we deal fairly with him I think he won't be a problem. Is there anything you need me to do now?"

"Wow!", Cameron exclaims with surprise, "An honest gendarme... I thought that was a contradiction in terms! Mind you that doesn't stop this from being political and him from being a jerk. Still I think we'd all better go and see Saul, you coming?"

Cameron gathers up everyone who is here and heads off to find Saul...

Waiting to see what happens in the Cyphermage library. Nessa was out at the Temple for two good hours, and the evening is near.

Dolgrin blinks at the abrupt change in topic. "No. I'm afraid that, at the moment, I cannot bring forth any magic. With more practice and training, perhaps, I may be able to tap into my bloodline to perform such feats but, currently, they are beyond me."

"Back to the subject at hand... To be truthful, it is difficult to say... My grandfather was becoming senile in his old age, and his theories, prophecies, or what have you, were already a source of ridicule. The generalities of an ancient evil, perhaps something extraplanar, that may be associated with elves is as close as I could get. He had heard of the Gold Goblin's contest which made him think that it could be the beginning of something... as I said, his mind was going. Still, his dying wish, so I came. The contest was seemingly mere harmless fun, but I figured that since I was here, I could look into the other things a little more. And that 'Blot' does seem to be something sinister... so perhaps he was onto something, if not clear on what that something may be."

No one can blame your grandfather. Since the death of Aroden, divination magic and prophecies are even a little more unreliable than in the past. The Blot is sinister, I agree, and has no natural cause. We can only wait and see, and maybe pray to be able to react if and when something happens.

The woman still looks at Krucina expectantly, to know if she will answer her question.

Cameron (and hopefully Nessa, Alayna and whoever else is there) goes to see Saul. Cameron admits that, "I don't know what it is about him but, Saul always makes me a little nervous. I feels a bit like I'm going for a dressing down with the Sgt. Major..."

He pauses for a moment outside Sauls door, and takes a deep breath before knocking on the door.

Krucina's eyes narrow at the mage's scrutiny. Though she doesn't feel that the Mage intends to do her harm, some about being studied rubs her the wrong way.

If Saul answers:
Cameron walks in and tells him, "Sir there's something we need to tell you. The thing is, well Sir are you a glass half full or a glass half empty kind of person? If you're a glass half full person, we're doing real swell. We've just had a politically motivated shakedown by the gendarmes, we must be doing something right! On the other hand if you're a glass half empty kind of person, well we seem to have a highly placed political enemy. That kind of thing is way above my pay grade, I'm hoping you can sort it out sir. I think they'll drop that line of inquiry for now, but you can never be certain, perhaps Hans should go on holiday for a couple of weeks out of town."

Will answer tomorrow.
