Tallak looks confusedly at Calder a moment, but then his words sink in. "Then I hope someone is able to interpret for me. An old warrior like me does not learn new tricks easily. It will be best if I keep my focus on what I am good at, communing with the beasts, elements, and spirits of the land."

Tallak nods at the second newcomer of the southerners.

"As I was saying, we should discuss our travel arrangements. I can handle food and water for the entire crew for the journey. The cold, though, it can get lethal even with magical wardings against it. We should take additional measures."

He takes a swig of mead from his horn before continuing, "I am going to need some time to alter some barding for Nightfang, as well as have something made to improve his speed. Speaking of armor, what happened to Asvig's? I will need it back. I am using this "rhino" hide as the base layer for Nightfang's barding."

Ameiko and Sandru laugh between themselves about the small-time bickering between the new arrival and the Ulfen men in the party, happy and amused by the interactions between everybody. "We'll have lots of time to get to know each other well," says Sandru, subtly winking at Vashta.

"And Aiko and I can give Tien lessons to anyone who is interested... based off of some of the things my father has told me, not many people will speak the Common tongue there. Foreigners are not completely unheard of, but there is little opportunity for your average person to study Taldane."

. . . . .

The intervening weeks between the fall of the Rimerunners and the caravan's departure from Kalsgard pass quickly. Vashta and Koya work side-by-side for much of every day, constructing magical devices to shield caravanners from the cold and to feed their horses. Koya compliments Vashta on her ingenuity for having thought of such a clever solution, but mostly just works quietly on their spellcraft.

Sandru travels into Kalsgard often to purchase mundane things - he acquires snowshoes, cold-weather gear, plenty of food, a few pairs of smoked goggles, a second campfire bead, a pair of boots of the winterlands for Calder, and more. He also buys himself a half-dozen bottles of fine brandy, for special occasions. He and the Dalmuvian brothers fill their days packing the caravan tightly with its provisions, making sure that it's comfortable in the cold, packing away camping gear, and then resting.

Ulf and Ukshakka travel north of Kalsgard for about a week, checking the route with local Varki and Erutaki villages. They come back in the beginning of Gozran, making new notations on their old maps of the Crown of the World. The time to set out is fast approaching, they say. A four-month journey will have the group traveling during the hottest part of the year, but any significant delays could push the journey into winter, and the Crown of the World is significantly more deadly during the winter.

I don't have access to my Google things at the moment, and I foolishly didn't download my Pathfinder information. I will be ready to move on soon, but I want Clara to come back and for Clara and Vashta to make their purchases. Remember, you won't get the opportunity to be in a city until well into chapter 4!

A few days before departure, Ameiko sits down with the group to tell a story, gathering everyone around the new campfire bead on stools and stumps. "I've been talking to Suishen about my family's history," she says, "And he thinks it's important that I explain some of it to you guys. It's pretty grotesque, honestly."

She begins,

"Ok, so when I found the warding box in that cave near Sandpoint, it gave me a flurry of visions. It told me about my royal blood, and it showed me visions of demonic creatures enslaving the land that is my birthright. It showed my family getting killed off. Suishen has helped to fill in some of the details."

"About seventy years ago, Minkai was ruled by its rightfully-endowed rulers. Apparently, the gods of Tian-Min gave certain families the divine right to rule, and none but those families can truly sit on the throne of the country. But there was a creature - Anamurumon - who lusted after the throne. Anamurumon was a powerful wind yai oni who led an army of oni and monsters, and the armies of Minkai constantly struggled against him. He was apparently able to gather a human servant. This human servant was a samurai, and wormed his way into the trust of the emperor. When the time was right, the emperor was betrayed and killed, and Anamurumon then sent his Five Storms oni army against the remaining royal families. With the back of the nation broken, the Five Storms prevailed against family after family, and my family - the Amatatsus - decided to flee Minkai."

"Under the leadership of the family patriarch, Amatatsu Rokuro, they led a harrowing caravan across the Crown of the World, but were pursued and winnowed down time after time. When the family reached Kalsgard, they were broke, and Suishen volunteered itself to be sold to raise the money for the family to flee farther south into Varisia, then a mostly-uninhabited land."

She looks around, concern evident on her face. "To all known accounts, I am the last descendant of the royal families. Minkai has been conquered by oni, and only I can restore the balance."

She frowns. "Now, this is an extremely dangerous trek that we go to take. I want to make sure for each of you -" she looks around, making eye contact with each person - "Are you sure that you want to come?"

Vashta looks toward Sandru, then around at the rest of the group.

"If I've learned anything, my dear, it's that caravans and our lives takes us to strange places we didn't expect to go," she says. "I never thought I would cross the Crown of the World, but if that's where my road leads, then that's where it leads. My own grandmother taught me plenty about tradition, and even if this isn't the same one I grew up in, I think she'd call it important.

"Now hopefully we won't all die, en route," she concludes with a smile.

Ulf grunts at Vashta's statement, while Sandru smiles at her. "Whether or not you die, well, that depends on you," he says. "I've only lost one caravan before, but they were f@$#ing idiots. Didn't listen to a thing that I had to say."

Tallak/Clara, when you are prepared, set your spells to what they would be for daily traveling.

When Gozran 7th comes, the caravan is all ready to go. With magical flags flying from each wagon and a few people riding on horse-(or tiger)back beside the wagons, Ulf leads the group out of Kalsgard and into the wilderness. As they head out, Calder and Shalelu act as scouts, warded from the weather outside of the caravan by endure elements and Calder's new boots. The first leg of the journey, a month-long trek over the Rimethirst Mountains, is fairly safe and easy. The caravan rumbles its way through each mountain road. There are a few minor encounters with bugbears or bandits, but these groups are quickly proven to have been unwise, as they are driven off by the many competent members of the caravan.

It is still spring, and the ground here is still verdant. It is chilly, of course, being about forty degrees most days. However, the forestland and hills are filled with small wildlife and flowering plants. The caravan moves quickly and with some cheer, and though each day is relatively boring and monotonous, the landscapes are beautiful. Once, a giant owl is seen soaring high above, and it is the talk of the caravan for a long time.

On Desnus 10th, Ulf leads the caravan down the Rimethirst Mountains and into the giant-barrows of Urjuk. Ulf explains that the giant-barrows were once a great giant civilization, but many many years ago the civilization fell. Nowadays, no people live in the giant-barrows. The road is lined on each side by ruined or partially-intact stone structures built into hillsides, graves for giants. Even today, giants come here from far lands to be buried or to die, because it is traditional for them. Here, Ulf says, it is the beginning of the truly dangerous portion of the journey. He expects to cross out of Urjuk on Desnus 14th and enter the Crown of the World.

At mid-day on the 10th, however, a thick cloud of ice and snow begins to dim the daylight. To the east, a massive snowstorm can be seen, and this storm is moving in the direction of the caravan's path. After a few minutes of squinting, Ulf shouts, "Akhlut!" and begins to run down the caravan, telling everyone, "An akhlut is on the hunt! We must seek cover! Ukshakka, head off of the path and look for an intact barrow."

We seems rushed and intense, but not afraid. "We have to find somewhere to hide the caravan," he says.

Knowledge (nature) DC 18:
An akhlut is an arctic predator. A magical beast, it resembles a cross between a dire wolf and a killer whale. Over 20 feet long, they are one of the most dangerous predators of an icy region.

Knowledge (nature) DC 23:
The akhlut has the ability to control the weather, which it uses to mark out a territory for itself. It can only create windy or snowy weather, so it frequently commands powerful blizzards, within which it hunts. The akhlut is an incredibly dangerous creature, much stronger than any creature you have seen or encountered so far.

Knowledge (nature) DC 28:
The akhlut is an arctic predator, and so it is immune to cold. It is significantly weak to fire, and it is nearly immune to any non-magical weapon. Its bite carries with it the frost of winter, and it leaves no tracks on snow or ice. It has the ability to walk on even the thinnest layer of ice, regardless of its weight. It also has the ability to transform between its normal form and the form of a 20-foot-long orca whale, and it uses this ability to ambush foes from the waterside.

Sandru, Koya, and the Dalmuvians urge the horses forward and right, off of the path, while Calder and Ukshakka search quickly for a place to hide the wagons. It doesn't take long - just nearby, there is a large and intact stone barrow structure, with an entrance wide enough to allow the caravans inside. Built into the hillside, this ancient giant's mausoleum emits a chilling wind.

The temperature begins to drop. Frost begins to condense over the leaves of nearby plants, and small animals flee into their burrows. The frozen wind begins to howl, tossing hoods and whipping hair.

The knowledge (nature) check already gives that, partially. It's just a really high check to know detailed knowledge about it, since it's both a rare and powerful monster.

Also, what could possibly go wrong moving into a giant grave burrow to avoid a wintry predator? :)

Vashta follows along with the others, preparing herself for yet another fight.

Our caravan always tried to avoid this sort of trouble, she thinks, at least when Grandmother was the matriarch. Now ... I'm out of practice for having to deal with things like this.

"Also, we're entering a grave," she adds. "I've heard too many stories of walking dead to feel completely comfortable about that..."

How far do we think this thing is? The spell can last seven minutes, and I'd like to see if we're alone in the barrow, but also it could give us 60 feet of warning about the akhlut.

Without any objections, the caravan begins to pile into the grave barrow. While Aiko and Calder, weapons drawn, look suspiciously at the storm, Ameiko moves up to Aiko. She taps the ninja on the shoulder with the hilt of her sword, and Aiko feels a ward spring up around her.

Ulf shakes his head, pushing people into the barrow. "An akhlut is too dangerous. Unless you have a better idea, we go into the barrow, and we don't fight it."

Ameiko casts protection from energy (cold) on Aiko - it protects her from the first 200 cold damage that she takes in the next three hours.

Using his magic, Tallak seals the entrance to the barrow shut after the last wagon, guided by Belevek Dalmuvian, rumbles into the giant's barrow. The inside is completely dark until Ameiko pulls Suishen from its sheath. The blade bursts into flame, casting the wide and tall stone chamber into a flickering orange light. The howling sound of wind and show is completely dampened.

Noble statues of giants ring this 60' radius circular chamber, and a passageway on the opposite side of the entrance leads farther underground, likely to graves.

Vashta activates detect thoughts, centered down the opposite passageway, but nothing shows up as intelligent other than her fellow caravanners. Everything seems pretty quiet and safe. Ulf sighs. "Good job, Tallak. That stone wall is a great idea - the akhlut is too stupid to think there might be something behind it."

"Now we just sit and wait. The monster should pass in a few hours." He finds a stray tile, sticking out of the ground, and sits down on it.

"Calder's right. I can't see this ending well, dear," she says to Clara.

Koya raises an eyebrow. "You don't have to come if you don't want to explore, Vashta." she says before turning to Calder, "And you, too. If you're worried, why don't you just stay with the group and keep them safe? I'm sure there's nothing in here - I just want to take a look at some old giant ruins."

Aiko stands quietly from her kneeling position and says, "Best not to take chances." She sheathes her wakizashi and moves to accompany Koya. "Do you need me to carry a light?"

Tallak stands and readies his spear, signaling to Nightfang with his head to follow. The tiger growls frustratedly as it stands and follows along beside Koya and Tallak.

Koya smiles and shrugs. "It never hurts to be prepared," she says. "Though I think you'd be better off without the light than with it. Calder, Tallak, Vashta - do one of you mind if I alight one of your tools?"

Tallak offers the tip of his spear.

Koya lights Tallak's spear with a light spell. "So!" says Ameiko, shouldering her blade and grinning. "Are we ready to do some delving?"

"No." Calder responds with great composure. "Still, given that every time you go off alone you get kidnapped. Or Sandru does, or.." He pauses and looks to Koya. "Have you been kidnapped yet?"

Lol, Calder.

Vashta nods at Calder's words, pulling out her cestus and putting it on her hand.

"Would anyone like a little boost in case we do find trouble?"

I can implant one of the following tricks on a player. I'll have mesmeric mirror on myself as usual. If no one speaks up, I'll put the mesmeric mirror on Ameiko. (That said, shadow splinter could be very helpful for Akio.

Tricks:
* Mesmeric Mirror: An illusory image appears near the subject to throw off attackers. The mesmerist can trigger this trick when the subject is attacked or becomes the target of a spell that requires an attack roll. One duplicate of the subject appears, and the attacker must determine randomly which it hits (as mirror image). For every 5 class levels the mesmerist possesses, one additional image appears, to a maximum of five images at 20th level. Each image lasts for 1 minute per mesmerist level or until destroyed. This is an illusion (figment) effect.

* Shadow Splinter: The mesmerist protects the subject against an attack and redirects the harm to someone else. The mesmerist can trigger this trick when the subject takes damage from an attack. The damage the subject takes is reduced by an amount equal to 3 + the mesmerist's Charisma modifier (to a maximum of the total amount of damage the attack deals). Another creature within range of the original attack, other than the attacker, is affected by a shadow illusion that makes it appear as if the attacker is attacking that creature instead of the attacker's actual target. This second creature takes an amount of damage equal to the amount by which the attack's damage was reduced. This shadow doesn't require a roll to hit and ignores cover and concealment, but the target can attempt a Will save to disbelieve the effect. If it succeeds at this save, it neither takes the damage nor believes the attacker targeted it. This trick can't be triggered if there's no eligible second creature within range to take the redirected damage. This is an illusion (shadow) effect.

* False Flanker: A duplicate of the mesmerist appears momentarily, as though he were fighting in tandem with the subject. The mesmerist can trigger this trick when the subject moves into or begins her turn in a square where she threatens an enemy. An illusory duplicate of the mesmerist appears in any unoccupied space adjacent to that enemy. This duplicate counts as threatening the enemy for the purposes of determining flanking, but can't actually make attacks. The duplicate disappears at the end of the turn during which the trick is triggered. This is an illusion (figment) effect, and a creature that interacts with the false flanker can attempt a saving throw to disbelieve the effect.

Mask Misery: The subject can shrug off a condition for a short time before succumbing to it. The mesmerist can trigger this trick when the subject becomes affected by a minor condition listed under the touch treatment ability. The subject can ignore the effect of that condition for 1d4 rounds, after which the subject takes the full effect. This has no effect on any conditions affecting the subject other than the triggering condition, even if those other effects are also listed under touch treatment. The rounds during which the subject ignores the triggering effect still count against that effect's duration; if the duration of mask misery is longer than the effect lasts, the subject isn't affected by the condition at all. If an effect that imposes more than one condition triggers this trick, the subject ignores all eligible conditions. If the mesmerist is 6th level or higher, he adds the moderate conditions to the conditions he can ignore with this trick, and this trick ends minor conditions entirely instead of suppressing them temporarily. The mesmerist doesn't need to have touch treatment to choose or use this trick.

Happy New Year, all.

False flanker would be great - more sneak attacks!
