The Grinning Pixie, the ship that serves as the home of the Arcadian Mariner's Lodge, docks in Katapesh, picking you all up, along with a variety of supplies. Venture-Captain Calisro Benarry, a tall, muscular half-orc woman, off

From Katapesh, the ship makes good time to Absalom, where Feighllaro departs, and the Venture-Captain obtains advanced navigational equipment, including magically enhanced sextants and astrolabes, though she refuses to discuss their purpose until you make it safely to your destination.

The Pixie hugs the Thuvian coast for much of the journey to the open Arcadian Ocean, and passes under the Arch of Aroden with surprisingly little trouble. One final layover is made in the Shackles city of Drenchport, to take on more food and water. Calisro mentions that you'll be doing a bit of archeology in the region once you arrive at your final destination, but won't explain further.

After this, the Venture-Captain spends less and less time interacting with the crew, and more time consulting her instruments.

After an additional week at sea, conditions begin to get rougher, as the ship is buffeted by strong winds and surging waves. The horizon is dominated by dark stormclouds, rising to the stratosphere and punctuated by intermittent lightning.

As the Grinning Pixie lurches and sways, the Venture-Captain calls you in to her office. She slides a clay jug of Sargavan rum across the table to you.

Though broad-shouldered and half a head taller than most humans, the intimidating half-orc speaks with an almost childlike excitement in her husky voice. “My apologies for all the secrecy,” she says. “I had to make sure some pirate rascal didn’t catch wind of our mission. Now that Drenchport’s a week behind us and we’re hugging the Eye of Abendego, it’s time to give you lubbers the full run-down.” Benarry waits for the jug to make its way back to her, then takes a long swig.

“I mentioned in Drenchport that the Society wants you to explore a recently discovered ruin somewhere north of the Shackles. Well, that was partly true, but it wasn’t exactly the whole story.” Benarry’s eyes narrow and her grin becomes unsettlingly sharklike. “We’re actually sending you to the Gloomspires, to Old Sevenfingers’s tomb.”

Chuckling softly, she slides the jug back across the table. “Here, have another nip. Looks like you need it.”

Imrana made sure to get some nice bread and sweetwine before leaving her last mission in Katapesh, as she suspected she would have to make do with unsatisfying fare on the Pixie.

She is just finishing off her last of her supply during the briefing.

"A tomb? That sounds quite exciting."

She takes a huge bite from her roll and chases it with a drink.

Silver Crusade

While the Gloomspires don't ring a bell, you've read quite a bit about Sempet Sevenfingers. He was a pirate captain in the area, active about 300 years ago. His dreaded flagship, the Voracious, was crewed by cannibals and madmen, who formed terrifying boarding parties.

He himself was a powerful wizard, dabbling in necromancy and dealings with evil outsiders, denizens of the Dark Tapestry, and other foul things from beyond this world.

Doubtful spends most of the trip miserable, as he did on the trip into Katapesh. Certain that the ship is bound for imminent doom, in the form of sinking, sea monsters, pirates or anything else that crosses his mind at the time.

He refuses to leave the boat at all in Drenchport, due to a surefire belief that 'press gangs' lurk around every corner in such pirate towns.

The news that their journey is nearing its end does not seem to lighten his mood at all. Instead merely bolstering his opinion that whatever doom awaits them merely gets closer to fruition.

"Tombs aren't exciting." He mutters at Imrana sourly. "Tombs are for the dead, not the living."

"Tombs for cannibals and madmen...?" He scowls, leaving the rest of the thought unsaid.

Silver Crusade

Doubtful, in his extensive studies of the worst people, places, and things in the history of Golarion, also knows a bit about the situation.

He'd also read about the captain of cannibal pirates, though news of necromancy and the Dark Tapestry is new to him.

He does know a bit about your destination, though. The Gloomspires are an ancient field of massive stone columns that rise from the Arcadian Ocean. Most sages say they were already old when the Ghol-Gan Empire was young. The Gloomspires are hollow and contain many chambers and passages, all of which are believed to be cursed, monster-infested, or both.

Thanks to her last reading, she knows a lot about where and whom they will see.

Amiri's frown deepens as her allies expound on the place that the party is being sent.

"How lovely... the Society always sends me to the most charming places! I'll do my best to make sure that none of us end-up in the cooking pot..."

Silver Crusade

Imrana, in addition to the other information, knows that many of the Gloomspires have been explored. Some have found new purposes and occupants. Sevenfingers' tomb is the most well known site.

Additionally, you and Dunkel both know that they're a cluster of columns that rise out of the sea, about a hundred miles west of the Eye of Abendego, though they constantly move. The columns are evenly spaced, rise about 500 feet high, and are virtually identical on the outside. On the inside, they’re hollow and riddled with chambers and passages, which are said to be home to monsters, traps, and worse. Some say there are twenty columns, others have counted fifty. The fog in the region never blows away, so it’s surprisingly difficult to count them properly.

Calisro turns to Amiri. "Indeed, Katapesh is lovely this time of year. But back to business.

“I’ve been researching the Gloomspires for a very long time. Before I sailed to Absalom and joined the Society, I was a Free Captain here in the Shackles. Back then I learned about the Gloomspires, Old Sevenfingers, and all the treasure and secrets the old devil took with him when he sealed himself in his tomb.”

A long, rumbling growl of thunder makes Benarry pause, and she takes the opportunity to wet her lips with another swig of rum before she continues. “Since joining the Society, I’ve been able to learn even more about the Gloomspires. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that they’re tied to certain alignments of the stars, and that twice each year—beginning on the nights of the summer and winter solstices—the columns cease moving for exactly three days.

“So, tomorrow’s the summer solstice. Now that you know the 'where’ and the ‘when’ of this little caper, you need to know why the Society’s sending you.” Benarry pauses before continuing in a more conspiratorial voice.

“I recently came into the possession of a logbook once owned by the pirate captain, Mazzer Thrennt. Before Thrennt ended up as lusca-bait seven years back, he was a moderately successful pirate who shared my obsession with the Gloomspires. It turns out his log contains an inventory of the plunder he liberated over the years, including the loot he found in Sevenfingers’s tomb.

One item on Thrennt’s list immediately got my attention: His log described with perfect accuracy a relic from lost Lirgen called the Orb of Stars. I’m certain that this device can manipulate the alignments of the stars—or at least how we perceive them—and historical accounts suggest we could also use it to trick the Gloomspires into thinking that the solstice lasts more than just a day. The Society and I both want that orb, and it’s going to look really good to the folks back home if you’re able to secure it.

Here," she continues, is how this is gonna work."

Reefs surround the Gloomspires, so big boats like the Pixie can’t get close. You’ll need to use my magical folding rowboat.

At dusk, when the columns cease moving, make your way to the column containing Sevenfingers’s tomb—it’s the one with the shipwreck wrapped around its base. Climb aboard the wreck, and you’ll see a set of narrow stone steps that wind their way to the top of the column. Once up top, find a way inside the tomb and then find the Orb of Stars. Thrennt’s log claims he hid the Orb in a side chamber connected to what he called the ‘hall of the flesh eaters’ and then collapsed the entrance to keep it safe."

She walks over to a large crate in the corner and turns to Dunkel. "That's where you come in. You may want to take this with you.

I’m certain there are multiple levels to this tomb, so keep good notes, and document anything you find that might help future expeditions. Check around the top level, but don’t go any deeper than you have to to find the Orb. Remember, you only have three days to do this before the columns start moving again.

The Orb of Stars is a solid sphere made of a dull copper-colored metal inlaid with dozens of star-shaped moonstones, rubies, and blue sapphires that mimic the stars of the Cosmic Caravan.

Any questions? Seems simple enough to me."

She gazes off, making mental-math motions rapidly with her hands.

"If the dwarves and Amiri will be taking care of the excavation, Jair and I could take care of keeping track of the notes for us. There are indeed shovels, miner's picks not suitable for combat use, and virtually everything Dunkel could possibly ask for.

In addition to shovels and picks, the scenario specifies "whatever digging equipment the PCs need," so anything mundane and with minimal mechanical effect that suits Dunkel's fancy can be in there.

Any other questions for the Venture-Captain? The Pixie is well supplied, so you can buy items up to 2,500 gp.

Dunkel pulls out some parchment and begins to sketch out drawings of tunnels, complete with stick figures representing himself, Doubtful and Amiri. In most of the sketches, Dunkel's identified as a "mining captain" but the arrows and flows don't seem to indicate a significant part of labor on his shoulders.

Dunkel continues to pratter away until his attention is redirected elsewhere.

Silver Crusade

She turns to Imrana, "Thrennt mentioned his exploration of Sevenfingers’s tomb and a few of the other Gloomspires, but the old goat was careful not to map or describe the Gloomspires’ interiors or describe any of the monsters or traps he and his crew encountered."

If you have any other questions, she's happy to answer them as you sail towards the Gloomspires. Once you arrive, you're hastily loaded onto a small boat and sent off.

It takes nearly two hours to climb the narrow, winding steps to the summit of the great stone column containing Sevenfingers’s tomb. Although the swirling chaos of the Eye of Abendego lies only a hundred miles away to the east, the violent storms it constantly hurls across the seas seem to have forgotten this eerily quiet place. Surrounding the monolith are dozens of nearly identical columns, their ominous outlines stretching down into the mist. And here, atop Sevenfingers’s tomb, is a small clearing surrounded by a thick and utterly silent veil of tropical trees, hanging vines, and thick undergrowth, all shrouded in fog.

Map will be up tonight or tomorrow.

Question: she gave us a folding boat? Can we take it with us so nothing comes along and steals it? Its our only way off this rock!

Doubtful has been relatively quite the whole trip so far, other then the occasional grumble.

As they reach the top, he glowers at the surroundings, a worried look on his face.

This clearing is the landing directly atop the steps you came up. Unusually thick fog surrounds you, which doesn't seem to move in the wind. Anything 15-20 feet away has concealment. Beyond that has total concealment, though the nearest other Gloomspires are massive enough to discern, about 500 feet away.

The vegetation is thick tropical foliage, including banyans and mangroves. Nature or Survival checks may tell a little more.

Doubtful and anyone else who makes a DC 10 Perception or Survival finds the remains of a campfire, not fresh but certainly used within the last month or so. A charred humanoid skull and several bones poke out of the ashes.

Dunkel hesitates slightly, believing himself to see a female cannibal off through the fog that reminds him of a woman he's seen often about the Grand Lodge...

If only ah' could remember who...

Shrugging loose his axe, he grips it with both hands and tries to bury it into the cannibal standing before him.

    "Diggin' starts early!"

    Silver Crusade

Imranai's missile topples the already wounded creature, while Dunkel dabbles in a bit of logging by demolishing a nearby tree.

Another woman rushes up, club ready and teeth bared.

    Imrana: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
    Dunkel: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Neither Imrana nor Dunkel know what exactly these creatures are. Amiri is up next.

    Male Human Bloodrager 4 (HP 30/40) (AC 18/12/17) (CMD 20) (Fort +7, Ref +3, Will +2) (Init +1) (Perception +7)

Amiri moves around to attack Yellow.

    Silver Crusade

A second cannibal falls to Amiri's massive blade.

A bloodcurdling inhuman shriek fills the air, its source not immediately apparent. As the anguished wail continues, you see the eyes of the remaining cannibal turn blood red. He stares intently at Amiri. Her vision briefly fills with images of horrific acts completed by even more horrific eldritch monstrosities. Somehow, she doesn't find this particularly unnerving.

    Will: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

    Doubtful is up.

Doubtful, on the other hand, seems just as unnerved as usual.

"Aw... that's gotta be something worse, right?" He exclaims, concerned, as the shriek echoes through the mist around them.

    "Right!?

His eyes wide with worry, the dwarf steps up to the next cannibal, and strikes out at it, fists and feet flying in his usual panicked fighting style.

Flurry with stunning fist on the first swing.

    Silver Crusade

    1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

Though the creature remains standing, it's clearly reeling from Doubtful's blow. Trickles of blood start flowing from his eyes and nose.

The remainder of the party is up.

Amiri does not know what the cannibal just tried to do to her, but she did not like it. Still frothing at the mouth, she hustles forward, and takes a swing at purple.

    Bastard Sword: 1d20 + 7 + 2 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 7 + 2 + 1 - 2 = 26, for 2d8 + 7 + 3 + 6 ⇒ (7, 5) + 7 + 3 + 6 = 28 damage.

    "Good work, everyone!"

Imrana takes a quick glance at the unconscious cannibals nearby as she moves closer to get a visual on both the remaining foes.

"Hmm...it seems as though cannibalism is not conducive to a hardy and strong body. I believe this observation is consistent with previously collected data."

She absentmindedly flicks a magic missile from her wand at the nearby cannibal engaged with Amiri.

    Magic Missile (from wand): 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
If purple is down (which I suspect it is after that whopper), then change target to the last remaining enemy. If she doesnt have line-of-sight to them, she will ready to shoot.
