Silver Crusade

From the Tome of Righteous Repose
The Ace of Dreams, Vellumis, Lastwall

Your orders have sent you to Vellumis, the largest city and most important port in the crusader nation of Lastwall, on the shores of Lake Encarthan. The waterfront and city center boast impressive architecture, with many buildings marble- clad, domed, and colonnaded in the once-popular Chelish Old White style, characterized by whitewashed walls, ornately decorated eaves, and massive arched windows.

Though there are an exceptionally large number of soldiers, most wearing Iomedaean iconography, roaming the streets, most are civilians. Flags of a dozen nations, and churches of at least as many faiths, can be seen as you navigate the city streets, leaving the elegant city center and heading into a seedier neighborhood that greatly resembles the dockside areas of Absalom.

When you arrive at the address you were provided, you discover a busy gambling hall. Raucous conversation fills the room, as men and women gather around a number of tables, playing various card and dice games. One of the bartenders notices you enter.

”Here for the Venture-Captain? He’s running a little bit late, but you can go ahead and wait in the office. Just through the door in the back.”

As you weave through the crowd, you catch glimpses of some of the players in action. A pink-haired gnome woman commands the attention of many players gathered around a green-felted table. Standing on a stool to gain a proper vantage point, she seems more fixated on the faces of the spectators than the game itself as she places her bets, before rolling a handful of dice across the table.

She rolls a handful of dice across the felted table.

1d6 + 3d10 ⇒ (3) + (7, 7, 6) = 23

The crowd cheers, and a stack of chips slides her way.

The door at the back leads to an office. Though the room is decently sized, a broad mahogany desk, piled high with books and papers, commands much of the far side of the room. The majority of the open space has been claimed by a hodgepodge of mismatched yet comfortable chairs, all positioned to face the desk. Over the next few minutes, several others arrive in the office as well.

Feel free to dot in and do introductions, while we make sure everyone’s ready to go. You may be familiar with Lastwall to some degree already. You can roll Knowledge (History) or (Religion) to see what you know at this point.

A half elf enters, with silver-white hair gleaming in the light. Faeran wears black leather armor and is equipped with a long bow and a flail. A myriad of colorful sashes are tied around the waist of this enigmatic figure. The most striking feature, though, is the fact that he ... or is it she?... is of indeterminate gender. Even the voice, when finally a self-introduction comes, is impossible to pinpoint as male or female. "Hello.. I am Faeran." says the half-elf, speaking softly. "I bring blessings of Arshea."

A haughty looking man walks in wearing fancy dress. He appears to be mostly Varisian, but a note of Taldane blood is obvious in his features. He looks around with obvious disdain for those around him.

"This the mission that needs my assistance? Need some real power around here?" he asks. "For those of you that are obviously out of the loop, I am Ethan Kaenes. I specialize in destroying those things that need destroying, with the power of magic. Realize that your job on this mission is to protect me, for when things get to hot and heavy for you all to handle, I will end the problem. Perhaps not until then."

As a cocktail waitress walks by, he just takes a glass of brandy off of her tray, as if it were meant for him. He takes a sniff, commenting, "Well, it isn't the worst I have had. Probably about the best that could be expected out here."

Crowe is having trouble concentrating on the Pathfinder business while surrounded by gambling. He is aching to go try his hand. Must stay focused! he warns himself, but he says nothing out loud. Ultimately, he cannot resist the gnome woman's allure and watches her collect her winnings. He tries to find an opportunity to ask her, "What game is this? I am not familiar with it."

Silver Crusade

Nesterok is familiar with the bare bones of Lastwall's history. It was established in 3828 AR, when it seceded from Taldor. It is a military dictatorship, primary focused on keeping the Whispering Tyrant locked away and the orc hordes of Belkzen at bay.

Hakon and Ethan know a bit more. The founders were the remaining crusaders from the Shining Crusade, the great war against the evil wizard-king Tar- Baphon (also known as the Whispering Tyrant, who rose after his death as a lich). Iomedae participated in the Crusade while she was still mortal.

The gnome raises an eyebrow as she evaluates the massive Shoanti for a moment, before babbling excitedly.

"Well they call it it Tyrant's Knuckles here, but there are lots of names and slight rules variants, depending on where you go. I believe the game originated with Varisians adapting local lithomancy techniques for gambling. The Varisians show a propensity for those adaptations. For example, using the Harrow deck for gambling dates back to..."

She'll continue to babble on for quite a while.

Eventually, you see a long-haired Varisian man weaving his way through the crowd, stopping every now and then to greet a customer, whisper something to a dealer, or throw a couple chips down on a table, before making his way to the office where you've gathered.

"Welcome, everyone! I'm Shevar Besnik, the Venture-Captain for this lovely little establishment." he says as he gets behind the desk, and begins moving books around on his desk, checking under sheafs of documents, and opening drawers.

"Bear with me just a moment. I know it's here. I was looking at it just before you got here.

His face breaks into a grin as he uncovers a solid oak box. As if to punctuate the discovery, a crowd in the gambling hall erupts in cheers.

Distracted for a moment, Besnik stares at the closed office door that leads to the common room. “Desna laughs. Well, she laughs at me, but she smiles on them.”

The venture-captain shrugs. “All they have is gold; what I have in here is far more valuable.

Besnik opens the box’s lid painstakingly slowly, careful to keep the contents out of sight. With reverence, he lifts a large tome from the box and gently sets it on the table. A large image of Aroden's holy symbol, a winged eye, is embossed in gold on the cover.

“Careful, the binding hasn’t held up well. This is one of the few Tomes of Righteous Repose left in the world. I’m pretty sure there’s one in the library of the Sancta Iomedaea in Vigil, but I’m—well, let’s just say I’m no longer welcome there. That’s a story for another time." he adds with a faint smile.

“Up until today, I’ve only skimmed the pages. I didn’t want to damage it, but now that you’re here, I can’t wait any longer. Care to plumb the depths of this most ancient and wonderful storybook?"

Oh, the marvelous adventures we will soon read! This tome is a collection of tales describing how various crusaders died gloriously and honorably. I’m hoping to find some clues in the text that will lead us to an as-of-yet undiscovered site or relic. Maybe we can trade a bit of what we find with the Knights of Ozem and earn ourselves some goodwill. After what happened last time, we need it.

“Care to peruse the pages with me?”

Rellakarabee Fustbickle, the text's author, is generally unknown outside of literary circles, and Hakon has only a passing familiarity. His subject matter revolves around heroic fogures and tragic deaths. His style is too melodramatic to gain significant acclaim, though he is popular in some circles.

With the door closed, Crowe finds it easier to concentrate on the discussion. Based on Besnik's demeanor, Crowe finds himself eager to hear the story from this book he knows nothing of.

Silver Crusade

The Tome of Righteous Repose is fairly obscure. Ethan is doubtlessly not surprised the others haven't heard of it.

Rellakarabee Fustbickle, the gnome poet who wrote the text, is known mostly among literary scholars. His subject matter revolves around heroic figures and tragic deaths. His style is too melodramatic to gain signi cant acclaim, though he is popular in some circles.

Fustbickle based his poems on true stories from the Shining Crusade. However, the finer details are ambiguous at best. Rumors suggest he was on speaking terms with the mortal Iomedae.

Besnik dons a pair of gloves before gingerly lifting the book from the box, and opening it seemingly at random.

An image of three armored Tien figures faces lines of text on the opposite page.

The Venture-Captain jolts upright. “Minkaian art! Let’s see, the Minkai Empire was founded in 3619, and the empire’s first explorers didn’t reach the west coast of the continent until at least 3691 AR, which leaves only sixty years before the beginning of the Shining Crusade itself. These women could have been among the first Minkai citizens to reach the Inner Sea! Let’s see, what secrets does the poem on this page hold?”

He then reads the poem,

Sonnet of the Shattered Sword

Stranglegut are legion, forces of death,
Soldiers of the lich who were promised might.
A bold samurai struck forth; in a breath
A thousand orcs struck down before her sight.

From tow’ring giant green, a challenge thrown;
The chieftain Slarg upon the bloody field
That she would stand in front of him alone
And not for less than death would either yield.
With cries of faith cast to the rising sun
The brave samurai charged and met his steel
Her blade she shoved beneath his ribs, she spun
A scratch from poisoned blade forced her to keel

In Torag’s house the elf was last interred.
With view of Kala’s Tears, her peace insured.

So she died in battle, victim to orcs’ treachery. If we can locate this ruin and retrieve the samurai’s remains and her blade, we can present them to the Knights of Ozem for proper burial. Any ideas on where this might be? Looks like there are some clues in the poem.”

Local or Geography might give some insight into the region described here. A separate History or Local could tell you more about the specific event described. Religion might reveal some information about the image, and Geography or Survival might be able to pinpoint a location, potentially assisted by some of the other results.

Silver Crusade

Nesterok and Hakon are both well acquainted with the neighboring Hold of Belkzen. The nation is a barren wasteland with few natural resources, dominated by hordes of orcs. Water is particularly scarce, with few potable sources available.

Most orc settlements have their origins in older settlements, either ruins from the Shining Crusade or even older dwarven sites.

Ethan proves better acquainted with other version of the Sonnet of the Sword. In all variants, a shining crusader charged into battle alone against a horde of orcs. Before dying, the crusader fought through the ranks and slew the chieftain, sending his clan running. This story is o en used to teach faith in the face of impossible odds.

The Stranglegut clan, referenced in the poem, was one of many under the control of the Whispering Tyrant, Tar-Baphon.

When the sonnet’s hero died, the crusaders buried her and her sword, which had shattered against the orc’s bones, in a dwarven ruin. After the orc chief perished, his hordes fled. Without this victory, the Shining Crusade would have suffered major losses.

Both Hakon and Ethan recognize the sun in the image as a version used by worshippers of Shizuru, the Tien goddess of ancestors, the sun, and swordplay. She is the deity in that pantheon most closely aligned with Iomedae.

Especially with this context, Hakon remembers a particular location in the Hold. When the Stranglegut clan was dominant, they controlled the orc’s largest settlement, Urgir. Kala’s Rage was the name of a massive waterfall in Belkzen, 40 miles east of Urgir. Over time, the mountains became dry and the waterfall slowed to a trickle, earning the waterfall the name Kala’s Tears. The site is a 13 day journey overland (at a 30 ft speed), almost all of which is within the relatively safe borders of Lastwall.

Any preparations or questions you'd like to ask the Venture-Captain before giving that site a check?

You've got a few gp to spare I think, so don't worry too much about the travel costs.

Traveling to the site is uneventful, mostly through safe Lastwall territory.

After climbing halfway up a rocky mountain to a wide ledge, the you reach an obvious entrance carved into the rock. Unless otherwise stated, the walls and ceilings within are made of hewn stone, 10 feet high, and all rooms are completely dark.

Hot winds blow ash through the air; it collects against the rocky wall of this ancient structure. Four stone columns mark the entrance, where a fifteen-foot-wide stair descends into darkness.

Unfortunately, your approach has stirred up movement. The ground seems to writhe as thousands of small creatures approach.

Nature to ID. Map should be up tonight, but assume there's a swarm about 15 feet away in the meantime.

Ethan sees the swarm, and identifies it, but before bothering to say anything (unless he knows it to be immune to fire) lobs a fireball at it, engulfing the swarm, but avoiding the party.

fireball, DC21 reflex for half: 6d6 + 2 ⇒ (2, 1, 5, 3, 4, 4) + 2 = 21 31 damage
varisian tattoo gives him +1 caster level on evocations Evoker gives him +wizard level/2 to evocation damage.

He then moves 30 feet away from the swarm.

"They are weakened. Now finish them. "

Reflex: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23

Ethan recognizes these as a swarm of Army Ants. Like all swarms of such small creatures, regular weapons are useless, and they can prove distracting, making it difficult to fight back against them.

More problematically, if a creature leaves an army ant swarm’s square,
the swarm suffers 1d6 points of damage to reflect the loss of its numbers as several of the crawling pests continue to cling tenaciously to the victim. A creature with army ants clinging to it takes 3d6 points of damage at the end of its turn each round. As a full-round action, it can remove the ants with a DC 17 Reflex save. High wind or any amount of damage from an area effect destroys all clinging ants. The save DC is Dexterity-based.

Further, an army ant swarm can rapidly consume any creature it swarms over. Against helpless or nauseated targets, an army ant swarm attack deals 6d6 points
of damage.

Ethan's fireball washes over them. Unfortunately, he seems to have aimed too high, as most of them remain intact.

The ants rush over Crowe and Thunder. Biting furiously.

Swarm Damage: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 5) = 12 and DC 15 Fort save or nauseated and additional 3d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 1) = 12 damage

Ethan will move 30' back away from the swarm, and then launch a second fireball situated so as to not hit any of his... associates.

damned cheesy assed die roller. We are definitely going to want to rest after this freaking encounter... I will probably have to blow everything at it with these rolls.

Ethan comes up in the next round and the swarm still exists:

Ethan will pull from his arcane bond a third fireball, making sure to move back another 30' from the swarm.

fireball #3: 6d6 + 2 ⇒ (1, 6, 3, 4, 3, 2) + 2 = 21 Still crappy

After this fight, Ethan thinks that we really should rest. He has gone through almost all of his major spells on this threat.

Silver Crusade

Resting and/or running is fine.

Reflex: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19

Alchemist fire and acid fly, but it is hard to score direct hits. Still, the fringes of the swarm begin to burn and melt away.

Crowe takes an additional 3d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 3) = 10 points of damage from the stinging ants, but manages to take a decent chunk of them 1d6 ⇒ 6 with them.

With the party scattered, the ants continue to munch on Crowe.

Damage: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 4) = 7 and DC 15 Fort save or 3d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 6) = 8 additional damage.

Shortly after that, yet another conflagration from Ethan disperses the last of them.

Reflex: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

Out of Combat

Feel free to rest and recover at this point. When you're ready, there is a long hallway awaiting you. Something large glows with blue-green light at the far end Yellow while various passages branch from the main corridor Red, Orange, and Green

Especially on complex maps like this, I tend to color code the major options. The party will go towards the first one endorsed by multiple people and opposed by nobody (as of whenever I update). While I don't need to know the specifics of the marching order, a rough preference (whether you prefer to be up front, in back, or somewhere in between), is helpful.

I prefer to be upfront, preferably at the tip so I can charge

"Pfew, good that we had your fireballs Ethan! Crowe, do you have a wand that I can use on you?"

If not, I will use mine, you can roll for cures

"Let's find out what's hiding in here"

Ethan, I am still fine with resting, Yarricki does not know that you are out of spells

After rest

"Hmmm, shall we see what's to the left first? I strongly believe in taking the first option left every time. That way we will eventually see everything."
My vote is on Red
