GM Ladile & the Pathfinder Society Present: The Night March of Kalkamedes (Table A)

Night March (Table A) || Night March (Table B)

Howdy folks! I've got enough interest for this to make two tables but for now this one will be our 'hub' while people check in and determine what tier they wish to play. We can do both low-tier, both high-tier, or one of each - whatever folks want! I know at least one person will be playing a Level 3 ranger but beyond that, things are pretty open :)

Once I have the second table sorted out, I will create a second campaign and direct the appropriate players to it!

Also it's like 5:30 in the morning here so there'll be more to come about me, how I GM, etc. etc. later after I've had some sleep :3

*edit* I know a couple of the invited players are already familiar with each other and enjoy playing together so feel free to organize yourselves along those lines if you wish! Conversely if you think that there might be a particular player that you will butt heads with (I don't know everyone's playing history) then please SEND ME A PM to let me know and I will adjust the groups accordingly - do NOT post any such grievances here in Discussion.

*edit 2* As of right now I have 8 confirmed players with possibly two more (that I know IRL) that might join us. I'll give them a few more days and if I don't hear anything then I'll fill the remaining 4 spots via Flaxseed to make two groups of six.

The Exchange

Male Half Orc Internal Alchemist 4 HP 35/35 | AC 19, T 12, FF 17 | Fort +9, Ref +8, Will +4 | Init +2 | Perc +8, 60' Darkvision, Bombs (8/8) Effects: Heroism 50mins

Depending on the tier I'd probably plan to play either Luurg here, level 4 melee alchemist and outdoor specialist or Frankie, level 2 unchained rogue. They are my most funnest characters to play so they get first dibs!

Sovereign Court

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Cleric: Channel 4/4, Fire Bolt 6/6, Spells -/2+1 | HP 12/12 | AC T FF | Saves 3/1/7 | CMD 11 | Perception 7| Init 6| Female Samsaran | Cleric of Sarenrae 1 + Wizard (Diviner) 1 | GM Reroll +1 | Wizard: Diviner's Fortune 6/6, Arcane Bond, Spells -/2 |

Hey Luurg, if you bring Frankie I can either bring my Clr/Wiz or bring back my level 3 summoner Meredith. I'm bringing one of these two here.

Sovereign Court

Hey guys! Still deciding on who I'll bring, though my first thought is Serge, who is now thoroughly broke after buying the whole Flaxseed Lodge celebratory beverages.

Maybe next time you'll help pick the fruits! Slacker!

Grand Lodge

Ladies, Gentlemen... Hi!

I'm sure I've played with everyone who made a post so far (except Ladile, but looking forward). And Red did run a game for me at some point. At the moment I only have 2 characters available. One is a 5.2 swashpallaracle, and the other is a 1.2 unplayed character. I am finishing a GM run of the Consortium Compact in a day or two, so that 1.2 will be a level 2 straight from the factory (with all of the options open), or the pally might be a 6. The pally doesn't do much damage, but she can take a beating. The other character would be a fresh one, so I can decide on the class and whatnot on the way. Just give me like 2 days (maybe less, depending on the players' posting rate) time to finish and report that scenario and I'm good to go with either of those.

Sovereign Court

Cleric: Channel 4/4, Fire Bolt 6/6, Spells -/2+1 | HP 12/12 | AC T FF | Saves 3/1/7 | CMD 11 | Perception 7| Init 6| Female Samsaran | Cleric of Sarenrae 1 + Wizard (Diviner) 1 | GM Reroll +1 | Wizard: Diviner's Fortune 6/6, Arcane Bond, Spells -/2 |

This is a level 1-5 scenario, so you'll have to keep your swashpallaracle at 5.2 to play.

Grand Lodge

That's not an issue. I'll just give credit to another character if we do high-tier.

Dark Archive

male Human (barely, he he)

This Is Eric Swanson checking in here!

I currently have a lvl 5 sorcerer plus a pair of level 1 characters available: An UC Rogue and a Standard Monk. I would prefer to keep this at low tier so I can start advancing either one of them (plus I think the mission suits them better anyway), but I could drag my sorcerer out of Semi-retirement for this one he he.

Silver Crusade

Night March (Table A) || Night March (Table B)

Alrighty, looks like so far we've got:

Eric - 5th Sorcerer *or* 1st UC Rogue *or* 1st Standard Monk (prefers low-tier)
Massee - 4th Alchemist *or* 2nd UC Rogue
Chadius - 3rd UC Summoner *or* 2nd Cleric/Wizard
NotEspi - 5th Conglomeration (Swashpallaracle) *or* 2nd ???
RowynStarr - 3rd Ranger

So it looks like high *or* low tier are quite possible with the currently proposed selection of characters, though we're still waiting on one or two others to check in of course.

Venture Lieutenant Play by Post

Hi there,

I have enough characters in high or low tier to bring. I present:

Myrd Sharpclaw, Tengu diplomat from Minkai (Wizard 5)
Kerastes, Oread priest of Abadar who takes care of his pathfinder companions (Inquisitor 5)
Yarricki, Gnome caretaker of the natural world with her axebeak friend Thunder (Druid / Hunter 4)
Kara, Dwarven crossbowwoman (Gunslinger / Fighter 2)
Karayan, Dhampir noble (Mesmerist 2)

and of course there are some GM blobs that could be made into actual characters. Seeing the scenario blurb I think Karayan would be the worst fit, the others should all be fine.

Checking in with Marcel Lafitte, my level 3 human ranger. Second PFS character made and the very first one to be in a PFS PbP scenario. Also, I'm the aforementioned brother that Ladile talks about on here from time to time.

Oof, all this talk about levels above one has me feeling a little gun-shy, haha.

I've just got ol' Corbett here available for PFS play at the moment, who only has a single session under his belt.

Fair enough. Guess we're going with low-tier. I'll probably run a battle host occultist 2, then.

Howdy Corbett! I believe that's all of my 8 invitees checked in so yes, now we can sort groups and fill in the blanks.

Looks like zebeev (Corbett) and Eric want low-tier so I can put you two together. I also know that GM Red, Massee, and chadius wanted to play at the same table. Everyone else go ahead and be thinking about whether you want low-tier or high-tier (or if it doesn't matter to you) and let me know.

I'm working all day today and then playing in our home game tonight but I will check in here as I am able!

Ah, if we're running two tables, just distribute yourselves as you wish. I will have characters ready for both tiers so I can fill the gap in the table with a lacking player.

And it would only be fair. I got Ladile a couple of times in our Mummy's Mask campaign. Once with a death attack from an assassin, the other with a phantasmal killer spell. And also with a basilisk petrification, but that doesn't count as death, just indisposed.

As far as a tier goes, I can go either way with low or high tier.

Eric Swanson (URogue or Standard Monk 1)
zebeev (Corbett - Brawler 1)
NotEspi (???? - ???? 2)

High Tier players will stay at Table A, while Low Tier players will migrate to Table B which is located HERE.

I will send out some feelers to a couple more folks that I've played with/GMed for to fill out the groups the rest of the way and if that doesn't pan out then I'll hit up Flaxseed and grab some folks! Right now I am tentatively looking to start this after the US Thanksgiving holiday - possibly over the weekend or a week from today (Monday the 27th). Hopefully all this sounds good to everyone :)

Sounds good. Don't mind me if Luurg starts up some RP in gameplay, he's getting tired of mixing drinks for everyone at the Lodge anyhow. You'd think more people would take advantage of a free drink when it came across!

Okay! We're approaching our start date of Monday, November 27th and now that I've actually got the time to sit and think on it and write it out, I'll be going over a few things.
_______

Who is GM Ladile?

My name is Kristin and I've been playing tabletop RPGs for the last 20 years or so. The bulk of my playing experience has been with AD&D 2nd Edition with a smattering of other systems such as AD&D 3rd/3.5, Dark Conspiracy and of course, Pathfinder. My home group, of which RowynStarr is GM, switched to Pathfinder a little over 4 years ago and we've been hooked ever since. I started participating in PbP here on the Paizo forums maybe 6 months after that and then PFS PbP maybe a year and a half after that.

Yeah, that's a great story. What about your GM experience?

I'm still relatively new to GMing, with a grand total of 5 games (one being a multi-table Special) under my belt at this point in time. Luckily for you, if you're interested in reading to see how I roll, you can find them all here at the following links:

(PFS) GM 101 - Ladile's Manor (Phantom Phenomena)
(PFS) The Confirmation
(PFS) Portent's Peril
(PFS) Reaping What We Sow
(PFS) The Solstice Scar: Version A (Tier 3-4)

What does GM Ladile need or want from me?

For starters, I'll need all of the following information from each of you for when I prepare chronicle sheets and report the game:

Player/Forum Name
Character Name
PFS ID #
Faction
Day Job Roll (if you have one)

Okay, done. What else?

Something I'm trying to get into the habit of doing when I'm gearing up to run a new game is to get an idea of what sorts of characters I'll have at my table. To this end, I ask you to tell me this: What does your character do that's cool? Do you specialize in combat maneuvers? Are you a beast that crushes Diplomacy checks with the greatest of ease? If your character has a 'thing' that they do or otherwise utilizes unusual things or specific circumstances then please let me know! This will make it easier for me to account for such things during combat and other sections where they might apply.

Got it! Anything else?

Yes, actually. Sometimes a player might find themselves temporarily unavailable to post in the game but, alas, the show must go on, especially if the GM and other players are still present and participating. To this end, I ask that you give me some basic instructions to follow should I need to 'bot' your character for you during combat or other moments. They don't have to be elaborate. For example, you could say something like this:

'Okay, immediately prior to combat I'm going to cast SuperBuff on our melee guy if I can. Then, if things are going well, I'll stand behind the melee guy and use my Longspear of Butt-Whoopin' to help him kill the bad guys. But if someone gets really hurt or goes down I'll use my Gloves of Awesome to heal them up again.'

Generally when I bot PCs I don't use consumable resources such as spells, abilities with <X> uses per day/round/whatever, potions, alchemical items, etc. unless explicitly given permission to do so via botting instructions *or* the situation is dire and I suspect the PC would use them to save himself or an ally.

GM Ladile, are you a hard@ss about things?

I suppose it depends on what you consider to be a 'hard@ass'. I will run the scenario and the encounters within as written, to the best of my ability, as all Society GMs are expected to do. But I also try to utilize my own common sense when I run my games. I'm not going to have my monsters deliberately eat your familiar when (and if) there are more dangerous threats to target. I'm going to assume that the collective group is smart enough to utilize light sources when they need them, without me making you state so every single time you enter a dark place. If you have the time and aren't threatened by anything, I'm going to assume that you'll probably Take 10 to ID items via Spellcraft, that sort of thing. You're Pathfinder agents who are assumed to have had at least a little basic training before being sent out on missions and so I don't personally see the point in dithering around on minor things - it's boring and in this type of medium, it only slows things down even further.

May I bring my tricked-out guy, Archer O'Doom to just blow things away? Or my witch to Slumber Hex everything in sight?

Well, technically yes. But my real answer is a bit more nuanced. If your character has a 'Thing' that they do, whether that be something cool for combat or something cool for social situations, then that's wonderful! My own sense of fun isn't contingent on me 'beating' the PCs - I want you guys to succeed! And so if you mow down my monsters with the greatest of ease or crush those diplomacy checks no problem then I'm not going to get butthurt about it. That being said, it is important to also consider your fellow teammates. While I'm happy to try and make sure that you'll get a chance to do your 'Thing' during the course of the scenario, please consider whether or not it'll be fun for your fellow players to sit by while you destroy everything. Everyone deserves a chance to participate and an opportunity to shine, so maybe consider toning your 'Thing' down a little so others have a chance to do their own 'Things'.

What about the posting rate?

Glad you asked! I'm aware that we're heading into the Christmas season and that people may be a little busier during the coming weeks than they would be otherwise. This is meant to be a relatively casual game with a more relaxed pace to account for the holiday season and so I ask that everyone try to at least post 1/day, whether that's an actual Gameplay post or a post in Discussion to let me know that you're still here, even if your character doesn't have anything to add to the current scene.

Most of you have played with me before and know that my own posting habits and times shift depending on when I'm working and such. On the days that I work I'll likely only manage 1 post myself but on my off days I can usually manage more. In general, I try to post as much as I need to to keep the game moving along and people from getting bored.
_______

I think that's everything that I wanted to cover, but if there's something I missed, something that's unclear, or something else that you want to ask about then please do so :)

I've left botting instructions in my profile, but I'll reprint it here.

Bot Me!:

Meredith will enter melee, flank with her eidolon (Her eidolon has a huge acrobatics bonus and reach) and stab with her longspear or bash with her mace. She uses Arcane Strike as a swift action to get a damage bonus .

If there is already plenty of melee, Meredith will buff the tank with the shield spell, or cast long arm so she can reach around.

Denair has 10 feet of reach, and she and Meredith have the Precise Strike feat, so they get an extra +1d6 precision damage while flanking the same target.

Marcel's a one-trick pony in combat as he excels at using his longbow for ranged attacks. He'll stay close to any spellcasters in the back and protect them from being attacked or flanked, switching to melee attacks if enemies close on casters or himself. Out of combat, he can scout ahead for enemies and while he might be able to spot traps, he can't do anything about them. He can also talk to animals if necessary to help the party if they run afoul of any that are or unfriendly to the group.

That is pretty much how I'll play it. If you need to bot me, go with this for reference. If it comes to using potions or magical items for botting, I'll trust your judgement on usage.

Speaking of magic items, I'd like to purchase a Cloak of Resistance +1 and a Mithral Shirt if those items are possible to purchase and I do have the money for both.

@Malusha - Yes, you would sell your scale mail for half-price, so 25gp. The Bag of Holding (I) is available as long as you have at least 13 Fame, which you should being 4th level.

@Marcel - You'll be able to find a Cloak of Resistance +1 with no trouble since I'm sure your Fame is 9 or better (or you might have it as an item on one of your chronicle sheets). The Mithral Shirt will be no problem either as it's a non-magical item and thus considered to be Always Available.

So we start tomorrow! I will be out shopping with my mother tomorrow morning and afternoon but I'll have the opening post up before I go and will be eagerly anticipating reading many replies once I return home :)

Before then, a few notes about combat and other miscellaneous things:

(1) I will be rolling initiatives for everyone and may occasionally make Perception checks for everyone as well. Skill checks, saves, and ability checks I will leave to the individual unless I'm botting someone.

(2) Eidolons and familiars, due to having greater than animal intelligence, I will allow to either act independently of their masters with their own place in the initiative order or you may have them act on your own initiative. Animal companions need to be issued commands and so master & AC will act on one initiative - I'm happy to use the better of the two, since some folks select feats and abilities to maximize their initiative modifiers.

(3) I will allow Aid Another on Knowledge checks. This tends to be a gray area in PFS but have seen this clip given as an example of someone aiding a knowledge check - in combat, to boot! Thus I'm inclined to rule on the side of the players and allow it.

(4) I operate under the assumption that characters will share results of Knowledge checks during combat, barring unusual circumstances such as a Silence spell being in effect.

And I'm sure there's probably more that I'm forgetting right now. As always, if there are any questions or comments then please speak up :)

Please use Yarricki's initiative, she is slower than Thunder. The big bird is quicker, but she waits for orders. Normally Yarricki is riding Thunder and mounts go on the rider's initiative.

You can have Denair & Meredith act on the same initiative so I don't hold us up twice.

Aaaaaand we're off! As I said I will be out and about all morning and part of the afternoon so more updates will be forthcoming later this evening :)

I made my purchase and have adjusted stats, gear, and money accordingly. I'll try to get a gameplay post later on this evening. Just don't have the time to do it now before I have to be out and about with other things. Ready to have fun doing this, though!

The Exchange

Male Half Orc Internal Alchemist 4 HP 35/35 | AC 19, T 12, FF 17 | Fort +9, Ref +8, Will +4 | Init +2 | Perc +8, 60' Darkvision, Bombs (8/8) Effects: Heroism 50mins

Wow, its been a long time since I can remember no one getting any info off the opening mission brief spoilers! But it looks like we'll be all set with any wilderness checks and perceptions at least. Luurg will be proud of this group in the woods.

Liberty's Edge

AC:19 (T:14) (FF:14) | F:6 R:8 W:3 |HP:28/28 | Per. +7 Human Male Ranger 3

Yep, this group is a little lacking when it comes to a skill monkey class. We'll just have to hopefully come up with some physical clues and luck in to figuring things out with them.

@Meredith - Buying things in this scenario is a bit odd as the opening starts with everyone already at Kalkamedes' cabin, which is not outright stated but is generally assumed to be located out in the middle of the wilderness based on the information within the scenario. So technically once the scenario actually starts, you're not in a position to be able to buy anything else.

However, I imagine that most groups would take notice that they're being asked to meet Sheila Heidmarch in what essentially amounts to the middle of nowhere and will plan somewhat accordingly in the event that they won't be coming back to civilization for a bit. So we'll say that you bought your scrolls before the group headed out to the cabin. Sound fair?

Also, apologies for the delayed post today - I ended up pooping out last night before making the rounds to all my player-games and I wanted to get some of them updated first since a couple of them were waiting on me for combat posts and the like. I also agreed to kinda-sorta take over a Gameday game that had some issues and so I've had to spend a little time this evening getting oriented for that.
