"Aperitif? Maybe he just wanted a final drink before he died," Zilchus guesses.

"Yeah, that's it, he just wanted a drink of Red Gourd Aperitif before he passed away from fright," Zilch amends his earlier thought. "In fact, I could use a drink as well of that. It sounds good."

Zilch invites Davros to help him search the oracle for the drink.

Sczarni

Searching the body for a drink Zilchus is surprised when he doesn't find one, but instead finds a small box attached to a leather cord. The leather cord looks just big enough to wear has a head band.

Feeling increasingly uncomfortable in the kobold's lair, Davros looks to Aodan. "Let us check this armory and be away, I am tired and my arms are aching from all this. Shall we?"

Davros then heads towards the armory.

Sczarni

As Davros approaches he can clearly see a large crude lock on the gate.

"Good thinking, Darkrose," Zilch cheers.

Zilch takes his load and follows Davros, pleased that the man is being more like him and taking the lead.

Zilch takes a look at the lock, then at Aodan.

"You think you can get this open? Or am I going to have to muscle it?" Zilch flexes his not-really-there muscles. It's pitiful...he has a wiry strength, but nothing to flex about.

All of the traipsing around kobold infested, turtle trapped, trap-laden caves loosens Davros' tongue a bit.

He without thinking responds, "You muscle it? Eh, I would have a better shot at bedding wedding Aodan's sister." He blinks for a moment, realizing what he has just said.

"My apologies. Clearly I am no in my right head. Please forgive my impertinence." He says as he bows his head in obeisance and drops his frame to appear smaller and non-threatening.

Eugene was enjoying the walk. Sure, his breastplate was ever slightly-too-large, and chafing, the protective padding below slightly worn out. The road had been long, the time... six long months. Searching, moving, asking, observing. Wandering. Counting and balancing. His mission, clear, but so little could he speak of it.

It was great to be outside. The air, the birds, the rustling of the forest floor underneath his boot. Magical.

GMK, I'm secretly hoping for a little plot hook to bring this clanking knight to where the (uh, lock-busting) action is. It's perhaps best that I remain slightly clueless to what has happened in the previous 28 pages of post ;-). Otherwise I have some homework to do :/

Sczarni

The gate was rather rickety and Zilchus was able to smash through on his second attempt. Candrana looks at the ruined door and pulls out the large key Zilchus found on the chief's corpse and opens the lock with it. "Maybe we should try the key first next time Zilchus? I'll let you explain to Nighttail why you felt to the need to break her armory door."

Loot:
Almost everything here is sized for a kobold. 12 Spears, 4 slings, 3 suits of leather armor, 3 wooden shields and 2 bows. There is however one weapon that is much to big for a kobold and well made. It looks like this long sword is made out of cold iron as well.

Eugene:
Your travels through the nation of Taldor have brought you to the town of Belhaim. The small hamlet is a common resting point for people traveling through the Verduran forest. As you acquire lodging for evening at the towns inn you start to here rumors about some of the recent events in town. How the old tower fell and some adventures hired by the local baroness linked the collapse to the local wizard Hunclay. Turns out Hunclay was working with a local kobold tribe and was killed in the collapse. Fearing there might be trouble from the kobold the Baroness sent the adventures out to deal with these kobolds and they have not yet returned. Fearing the worst the baroness is hiring guards to help protect the town incase the adventures fail. Not wanting to see innocent town folk slaughtered by kobolds you go to see the baroness about protecting the town. As she is filling in the details the group of adventures return.

That is more of what I had in mind for you Eugene so they should be meeting up with you soon.

Zilch gives a quick flex of his non- muscles to Darkrose, tossing the broken lock to the ground. Scanning the weapons, he takes only the longsword.

"Zilchus...did you? Dammit." Davros will look at the others, shrug and begin to collect the 'spoils' and heads back to town. Slowly. Carrying everything else that Zilchus left behind.

On your way out of the kobold lair Nighttail is waiting for you. "Thank you choosing to work with me instead of wiping out my tribe. I have already sent out scouts to find us a new home, but these things take time. I hope to have use relocated with in a months time. In the mean time you will not see any kobold in or around the towns borders again."

The way back into town is uneventful and Candrana takes her leave before the rest of the adventures make their way back up to the baroness' estate. Stating that she has urgent family issues that need attending and to please send her share of the gold as it will be needed.

The servant that opens the door seems a bit surprised to see the adventures, but leads them to a sitting room where the baroness is already speaking with a guest. The man sitting across from the baroness is dressed in a soldiers uniform under a breast plate. He appears to be armed with a long spear, a few javelins and a heavy mace. The baroness stands to great her guests. "Well it's good to see you made it back. Though one of you seems to be missing, the quiet one with the pointed ears. I figured it would be the loud one that didn't make it back. Anyway I digress, please tell me the problem has been taken care of."

Very odd for it to be mentioned now as that dragon is long dead and gone."

She looks back at the armored man still sitting quietly. "Oh I almost forgot, it looks like your services will not be required to protect the town. These caravaners , despite their meager appearance seem to have taken care of the problem." She puts a finger to her lips for a moment to consider something. Feel free to introduce yourself Eugene.

"Yes that's it, I'm sure it is just as prestiges as you make it sound. Now I'd like all of you to work together on the next problem caused by this damned tower collapse. It turns out that the sole heir to Hunclay's estate has no interest in his possessions and wants everything liquidated via auction. This is no easy task as the wizard's home is rumored to be guarded by magical traps and monsters. I'd like the four of you to go through and eliminate any traps or guardians while keeping an eye out for any magical valuables. Davros turns to look at Zilchus and Aodan inquisitively, "This sounds like a good deal, no? We help this town, we make a bit of coin, and we get more stories. It seems like a, eh, worthwhile job. Perhaps we can."

Don't seem too eager, boy.

"Yeah, sure, we can do that, probably tomorrow or the next day. We got something to do in town and a few more rewards to collect. You can't rush the Scalebane, I tells you."

Zilch listens to Eugene introduce himself as he takes the offered reward monies.

"You Jean, lookee here. We got our dragon's horde of monies. You follow me, like Aodan and Darkrose do and we'll get you enough gold to start your own religion," Zilch says, holding up a gem for inspection and tossing it back in the box.

Zilch brushes some dust from his armor.

Eugene then turns to Zilchius: In brief, I have a background in theology, which I commenced in Egorian, Cheliax. I quickly turned my devotion to a more business minded deity, of which I joined the warrior order after a brief traineeship. I am fluent in common, and count both the arts of 'impalement' and 'skull-crushing' among my skill set. Furthermore, I have initial experience in the field of ballistics, allowing me to land a javelin accurately in an opponent's thorax from short to medium distances. Moreover, my knowledge of the flows of positive energy allow me to balance the reduction of liabilities with the augmenting of assets.

While the notion of 'starting my own religion' certainly sounds appealing, my immediate goals are the proper protection of business interest from country and estate risk factors, which may include, but are not limited to monsters, bandits, vermin, haunts and illegitimately placed devices with the intent to cause harm or impairment.

Skull-crushing?
Thorax impalement?

"Nice. I can see that you and I are going to get along just fine, You Jean," Zilch agrees, stifling a yawn.

"Tell you what, You Jean, Why don't you meet us at the cantina at 11 bells tomorrow? I've been killing kobolds all day today and could use some sleep. And Zilch needs to spend some coin tomorrow."

The Baroness nods, "There is no rush so feel free to rest and pick up any supplies you need. There is just one small matter that needs to be taken care of before you leave." Lady Origena walks over to a desk to retrieve a document. "Given that I am bound by law to over see this process and can be held liable for any damages to the property I had a contract drafted." She unrolls the document and there is space for four signatures at the bottom. "It basically holds you four responsible for any damages or missing items and explains the need for your services along with the agreed payment being taken from the funds generated by the auction." She lays document on the table and supplies ink and a quill.

What clauses does the contract provide for the contingency of disability, lasting bodily injury, curses or mental trauma as a result of the cleaning procedure?

Also, could you tell me once again who the counterparty is, as well as the original entity holding the assets? Information regarding their background would be much appreciated, as it may help us anticipate the nature of the defensive devices and the illegitimate inhabitants. What information regarding these topics is available?

This contract is only acceptable is we are held accountable for damages proven to be caused by the cleaning process, and any missing items proven to be in our possession.

We will not be held accountable for any missing items which were not taken by us, nor any damage caused by parties other than ourselves, even if such damages occur during extradition.

I suspect the contract, in its current form, is not acceptable. Moreover, the honour code to which I am bound more than sufficiently suits the needs of your client, no additional legal confirmation is necessary.

Lady Origena sighs and mutters under her breath It's like this every time I go to make a withdraw at the local temple." She clears her throat before answering all of questions she was bombarded with. "This contract has no clause for any harm that may befall you. It is a risky job, but it pays well to compensate for that fact. The heir to the estate is some cousin down in Yanmass. As to the wizard Hunclay your new associates can tell you more. I only know that man was would not stop hounding me to take down that tower and that he is a know recluse. If you actually take the time to read the contract you will see that it is there to protect you as long as you preform the job correctly. I understand that mistakes will be made and what some rampaging magical construct does is beyond your control. I know you have some sort of honor code that puts you above such thing, but you also have an honor code to follow the rules and regulations regarding the proper collection and transfer of an estate." She simply glares and Zilchus and says, "If you have a code of honor sir then I am just a simple priestess of Calistria. If I told you the methods of verifying stolen property that would just give you time to find a work around." Finially she turns to Davros, "A simple X will suffice if you are incapable of writing your own name.' She then looks over the ragtag group, "Now do you all wish to undertake this job? Male Zealous Warrior 4 | HP 31/31 | AC/17 T/11 FF/16 CMD/14 | F+5 R+2 W+7 (+2 vs ch, comp)| Init +1, Perc +3 |

Earlier

Smiad is one of the empyreal lords, the archon of dragon hunting. Though, from the sound of it, you seem to be the kind of person that reveres the rising sun.

Later

Eugene takes on his role of protector of the trade, and makes sure Zilches' pockets don't get filched as he makes his trades.

While we wait for people to get back, Zilchus will take the following to the local apothecary/magictorium for identification and possible sale:

Animal hair cloak
Bone wand
Two scrolls
Small box with leather headband

Zilch walks in and dumps the gear on the table.

"Xemmne! You have the pleasure of now dealing with Zilchus, vanquisher of the kobolds and rescuer of maidens," Zilch says, not even lying.

"We found these items and were wondering if you could help us identify them. My skill lies with daring and bravery, and my strong spear."

Sczarni

"If you are willing to pay the 45 gold for me to make an extract that allows me to do so then I believe I can help you."

Assuming you pay the 45 gold:
Cloak of the Fang
Wand of Web
2 scrolls of Glitterdust
Phylactery of Faithfulness

Sorry for the delay, been getting less sleep then normal.
