Rennyn looks to Kenan with some concern. Are you all right? he asks of the dwarf as Fenra cleans the gore off of him.

Rennyn then follows Fenra closely as she prods the ground with her javelin. When close enough, Rennyn investigates the mound.

Actually, the blood only splattered on Kenan, but I guess a bit went elsewhere too :) | XP is per player

Kenan is, at first, unresponsive. Bringing his emotions back under control, the dwarf blinks hard a few times before noticing Fenra's concern. Nodding his thanks, he wipes his face and wrings his hands. He takes a few deep breaths before retrieving his bow but says nothing and avoids eye contact. The encounter has left the monk shaken.

Poking about with her javelin, Fenra fails to discover anything of value in the clearing proper. Behind the mound are several piles of bones. Most have been picked clean of their flesh, however a few look fresh. Beneath these are tattered scraps of clothing.

Inside the mound is a different story. A morbid collection of trophies line these walls. Starting at the far end, is a stack of nearly a dozen muddy spheres. Closer examination reveals these to be the poorly preserved heads of no less than 11 victims. Packed in mud, the creature had made a grisly attempt to preserve these heads as trophies. Save for two, they are little more than bone and scraps of hair. Along the sides of the walls lay more complete articles of clothing. Soiled and torn, the items lay strewn here and there. Only a few items hint of any value. The oversized sword (a great sword) rests next to a leather satchel. Clinging to the waist loops of a red robe is a small brown leather belt with a small pouch containing 23 cp; beside that is a sheathed dagger. A leather bound book and a small, flat wooden box are also worthy of investigation.

The satchel is empty. The wooden box is the size of a large book: just over a foot in length, half a foot wide and about three inches in height. The wood is inlaid with differing hardwoods forming an intricate pattern. It is shut with a well made lock.

On the damp floor where the open leather bound book lay, are several torn pages. Appearances suggest the book was tossed there and then forgotten. The loose pages are tattered, splattered with blood and muddy footprints.

Wrapped in soft leather which has been stretched tight across thin boards, the book is actually amateurishly bound. Skimming through its pages however, the writing inside is neatly scribed but does not make sense to a lay person. Handing the book over to Jeryn, he is able to make sense of it. This is what remains of a wizard's spell book. Inscribed upon its pages are various notations, sketches of gestures and body positions as well as summaries of results. The absence of the common orisons one would expect to see in a book such as this suggest that those were the unfortunate pages which now lay wasted in the mud. Eight of the remaining pages have been used. These intact pages reveal the secrets to casting several enchantments: VANISH , COLOUR SPRAY, CORROSIVE TOUCH, SHADOW WEAPON, SILENT IMAGE, BLUR , DISGUISE OTHER and AGGRESSIVE THUNDER CLOUD. There are ten pages of the book which are blank.

I did roll to see how many spells would remain...the result would have swung either all spells being lost or all spared...Jeryn is lucky :)

At the discovery of the numerous heads Renny says a quick prayer for the deceased.

I wonder who they all were? A moment later he adds, We should bury the remains.

As the items are collected, Rennyn looks expectantly at Fenra and Jeryn. Anything magical? he asks as he examines the sword. Didn't Walthus say that one of those that visited him before us carried a great sword?

Picking up the box he tries to gauge its contents by weight and by gently shaking it. Should we pry it open now?

Grateful to leave the piles of bones, Fenra approaches the mound entrance. Concentrating, the oracle opens herself to the vibrations of the natural energies surrounding her. Her dark eyes dilate and take on a faint shimmer. Casting her gaze upon the items inside, the leather bound book and wooden box both glow with magical auras. Looking closely at the box, she notes the initials B.Q. have been etched into the metal just below the keyhole. However, identifying what magic has touched this box is outside her scope of expertise.

Passing the item to Jeryn, he discerns that the box itself is indeed magical. Judging by the minute traces of gold dust, the lock has been re-enforced with an abjuration enchantment. The inlaid wooden patterns surrounding the vessel also suggest very strong magical enhancements. The lock is exceedingly difficult to bypass, well beyond any skills possessed by this group and he doubts the box can be forced.

I do believe you are right, she says reflectively, but I think we already know the fate of the ones who came before us. Combine what I saw and heard with the proximity of this creature and we have the tale of their end.

She eyes the red robe that looks much newer than the rest of the scraps of clothing there speculatively. Even though she didn't feel any compulsion she reaches out for it with a hint of trepidation.

Fenra:
Touching the wizard’s robes, the dark fog surrounds you once more. Leaving the ground, your body takes flight and a viewing portal opens before you. As before, images appear but this time they belong to the one you recognize as Preston. The hour is late and the night sky is overcast. The trio work quietly around a dying campfire as an overweight man with salt and pepper hair and mustache lay sleeping nearby. His black robes are held loosely by a maroon leather belt and topped by a flimsy black cap. You watch in anticipation as Sheila slips a thin wooden box from the man’s satchel and the trio slip away in the night. The images blur. Familiar scenes of the trio walking along the Lone Coast Road come into view. The scene blurs and there is laughter as Kalib jokes about the Halfling Walthus. The image shifts again. There's screaming. Preston runs down a familiar looking path; Kalib is ahead. His sword held high as he runs, the fighter rushes past Sheila, inadvertently shoving her to the side. Sheila stumbles and slips into the ground and you hear Preston's voice call out, Sheila! There is panic in her eyes. Disorientated, she is reaching frantically for Preston’s outstretched hand. Preston! Get over here! Kalib's voice commands Preston's attention. It too sounds frantic. Turning away from Sheila, the wizard glances at the branches nearby and mumbles, Grab hold... His words echo in your head as he runs down the path toward Kalib. Rounding the corner you can see him in full melee with the creature. Do something! Preston’s hand reaches out and his voice utters a few arcane words unleashing a burst of brilliantly coloured light. To his horror, Kalib’s hands relax, releasing the great sword from his grip and stands stunned, staring off into the vegetation. No! A second later, the creature grabs Kalib and sinks it’s teeth into the warriors neck. As Kalib’s blood spews forth, Preston runs into the fray. The wizard enacts more words, summoning a dark blade into his hands. In desperation, Preston lunges at the creature, stabbing at it with the shadowy dagger. The creature drops the warrior’s limp body and hisses maniacally, seemingly unharmed by the wizards attack. A claw retaliates, catching Preston across his face. The blow sends Preston downward in searing pain; his face connects hard with the ground. As his vision comes into focus, a large frog hops out of the way; screaming as it goes. The frog sounds just like a girl! No! That's the girl we are trying to save? Kalib you fool! My god, where’s Sheila? Why doesn’t she help? A second later, you feel the creature’s hot breath on your neck as its teeth sink into the wizard’s youthful flesh.

Handling other articles you realize these belong to the five missing people from Sandpoint. Other articles are connected to four other heads of travelers. Burying them here will not bring closure to the families in Sandpoint, they should be returned.

Or we could perhaps leave them in the care of Walthus for the time being?

Kenan steps forward and volunteers to take a handful of the skulls and their connected articles back to Sandpoint. I will notify Sheriff Hemlock of the remains and lead him here to retrieve the rest. From the look in his eyes you can tell he wants no part in continuing. Taking the empty sachel, the dwarf gently packs three carefully wrapped skulls, commits the others to memory and accompanies the group back to the main trail. It is a short walk from here to Walthus'. I should have no problem from there. Having safely made your way this far, his words have a ring of truth to them - he will be fine returning unaccompanied.

To summarize Fenra's vision: The other group was either very unlucky or very incompetent. They stole the box from a mysterious man then ventured into the swamp. Killed by the sinspawn, their remains joined its collection of skulls. Five of these belong to persons gone missing from Sandpoint over the last couple of years - Klaxle was right. The remaining skulls were of travelers.
If there are other things the three of you wish to do prior to leaving the clearing, we can do that now.

Are you making my points for me?

Our duty is to the living. The goblin threat is the active danger.

At Kenan's offer, Rennyn nods in agreement. Kenan can handle the unpleasant business of notifying the deceased's kin and the authorities. We carry on to deal with the goblin's.

When the time comes to split up, Rennyn shakes Kenan's hand and wishes him safe travels.

Are you sure I can't make and play a replacement for Kenan? Maybe with two characters I'll have a better chance of being involved. :P

He realizes the poor taste of his remark as he digests Fenra's previous words.

He closes the book and nods at each party member in turn before urging Fenra to continue.

Once the tale is done and Kennan has elected to return to Sandpoint, he says Are we sure it is wise to split up? At least if we do, let us proceed cautiously. I will also need time to study this book if I am to be able to utilize any of the spells that lay within.

Kenan stands by the game trail and watches as the trio make their way south and disappear into the dense vegetation. His path takes him north to safety. Leaving his friends to their fate, the dwarf shutters as a cold chill runs down his spine...

As the midday sun approaches, the path meanders east and then south. The heat of the day has not let up and sweat continues to torment your bodies. Soon stomachs begin to gurgle uncomfortably. As the path makes a sharp turn the sun shines brighter ahead. The vegetation here gives way to a small creek and another of Brinestump's many bridges of rope and wood has been erected here. Dampened by the rains and covered in moss. Half way across, several planks are missing or broken but otherwise it looks to be intact. As you gather around the foot of the bridge, a sandy embankment drops down to slowly moving murky water. On the other side of the embankment, part of the path leads down to access the water’s edge.

We do not have the luxury of time Jeryn. Every delay means another opportunity for the goblins to spread their misery and destruction. You will have to study the book later, we need to press on.

As the group approaches the bridge, Rennyn having taken over point duties, signals for the others to stop. Another bridge. Looks safe enough, but be on your toes, he says before testing the ropes of the bridge and peering down into the water, trying to gauge its depth.

Rennyn will move to the front and take over for Kenan. Hopefully only for a short time. ;)

And what do you mean "break"?

Fenra is correct, I was hinting at lunch.

Rennyn:
I've thought about Draeven's history and have a few suggestions that I think will help him fit in with what I see going on in Sandpoint...

Meeting/associating with Shalelu to hunt goblins is fine, he needs a little XP to mesh with the group so this works.

Hunting goblins without Shalelu doesn't keep him on par with the group but suggests he is more advanced. He only needs three goblin kills to equal what the group has. I'd rather he act as part of Shalelu's network; keeping her informed of goblin activities and numbers. Draeven's area is north of Sandpoint however. He can't know too much about Brinestump as it is Walthus' territory to know - Walthus is Shalelu's guy in these parts ;)

Draeven has entered the swamps for two reasons:
A) to get information for Shalelu, not at her suggestion to watch out for the party. Shalelu only returned to Sandpoint last night. She made contact with him before heading to the Rusty Dragon to rest and suggested he scout this part of the swamp.
B) Draeven is along for extra fire power. He expects to see Shalelu tomorrow morning with Walthus near the old fishing trail. Shalelu has heard of the increased activity here, is sure she will encounter a fair number of goblins and thinks the extra experience will do Draeven some good.

Comments? Call me :)

The murky depth of the creek is difficult to gauge, but you are certain it is deeper than you are tall. Fortunately, the water here moves slowly; should you find yourself falling in, the swim to the other side does not look difficult.
Rennyn's percussive test of the bridge's support ropes causes them to vibrate. Tugging on them causes the bridge to sway up and down and side to side. It creaks worryingly as it moves, however the old wooden planks remain in place and the ropes don't look any more worse for wear. Taking a few steps out onto the bridge, the elf puts his weight into it. This time the bridge heaves and moans, but still it holds its shape. Having passed the jump test, Rennyn deems it safe and looks back at the others...

GM:
I think you worry too much about XP. And appearance of "power levels". As stated before, being a 1st level classed character is a cut above the norm. Otherwise we would be 1st level commoners or warriors as opposed to 1st level rangers and wizards. Realistically, how does one have favored enemies (goblin) without actually having encountered them?

I'm not saying that Draevan has killed multitudes of goblins, and maybe he mostly scouts out things and reports to Shalelu, but why worry about it? For comparison, Happs the bandit lieutenant in KM was a 1st level ranger. Was he portrayed as a greenhorn with little experience? How about Kressle? 2nd level rogue. Considering we will likely by second level by "tomorrow", or the next day at the latest, in in-game time, I fail to see the issue. It seems more preponderous the other way frankly. We are hard pressed by goblins this week and slaying trolls by next week. Dragons in a month? :P

With regards to your other points, I have no issue with Draevan being unfamiliar with the Brinestump and this being his first foray into the area. Never assumed otherwise.

He is a trapper by trade and has some experience with dealing with goblins. He has been sent by Shalelu to scout out this area independent, and without knowledge, of the party. Yes?

Rennyn looks back at Fenra. Perhaps we should start with the lightest members of the company first. Just to be safe.

Before setting off across the bridge, Rennyn picks up a large stone and tosses it into the murky water, waiting to see if he stirs anything up.

So are you sending Fenra across first? I'm a bit confused and since you mentioned it, how much does everyone weigh with their equipment? At the moment Rennyn is still at the foot of the bridge but has not crossed, Fenra is next in line then Jeryn.

Rennyn:
Yeah I worry. Its a bit of a grey area for me too but the picture is clearer now.
I will work Draeven in sometime soon. Watch for his intro then take him over :)

The wooden planks creak as the elf begins his crossing. Swaying and bouncing as he goes, Rennyn's pace is kept in check by the bridge's movement. Stepping carefully near the middle, Rennyn by-passes a few of the planks that are missing with ease.
The hurtle cleared, the bushes on the other side suddenly come to life and a olive green creature with large pointy ears, huge bulbous eyes and an ungainly head emerges, bow at the ready. With little time to react, the creature looses an arrow at the unsuspecting Rennyn. Traveling through the air at incredible speed, the tip strikes true, finding a gap in the elf's armor. Childish Quasit...Rabble-Rousing +28| Fluff +25 ....| RAW -29 | Poor form +33 Watch order: Draeven, Rennyn, Anara, Fenra, Sharadei

@Fenra: From your current position, both are just clumps of tall grass and shrubbery; the goblin at AU98 is partially concealed in the vegetation. I told Rennyn he'd have a clearer idea of AU98's position once he left the bridge. You're sure there is a goblin further up the path, but not his exact location. Since you have been attacked, Fenra has a pretty good idea where either foe is and can attack there. But due to their concealment, there is a 20% miss chance.
@Party: And just so we can get this out of the way, and to make sure I'm rolling things correctly, when rolling %, results within the percentage (in this case 20%) are a miss. Anything higher will be considered successful.

With Rennyn's calls from the bush assaulting Fenra's ears, the fair half-elf's eyes spots something most unexpected. Further down the path, a monstrous figure bounds into the foliage from which the second arrow had flown. Tall with a powerful build, its greenish skin almost blends into these surroundings. Clad in armor made from pieces hardened leather, a brown shirt flows loosely from underneath. Stained and well worn, it partial hangs over baggy breeches of similar color and condition. There is a flash of a metal as the humanoid brandishes a socketed blade on a wooden shaft. The weapon swings wildly at the fiend hiding within the brush though. Curses ring out as a frustrated hero's tactics fail to produce the results he'd desired.
Aaah! Whatzz this onezz doing here? A muddled goblin calls out in alarm, warning his brethren of the appearance of this newcomer.

Ok, not the entrance I'd hoped for but dramatic enough. Here is your replacement for Kenan. No, its not the Hulk :P He rolled just after Rennyn in the initiative order at Init 17. He has creeped up on and gone toe to toe with the goblin at AV98. One of you can take him from here and don't forget introductions later :) | Jeryn and Fenra are up!

Bleeding and keyed up Fenra is a little unsure about the arrival of the tall green one but as he seems to be attacking their foes she chooses to focus on the goblin located somewhere in front of her. She moves off the bridge and into the brush to her left by Rennyn, trying to get a better angle on her target, and lets her javelin fly.

Get down! Rennyn scolds Fenra.

Once the goblins attack, their position is known. Period. If they wish to attack and remain hidden they need to make another stealth check at -20 as per sniping rules. Concealment applies on the attack yes, but their position is known.

As for rolls, higher is always good, lower is bad. So yes, in this case rolling 1-20% is a miss.

How many goblins is Draeven aware of?

Stepping off the bridge, Fenra takes up a position beside Rennyn. Turning she quickly hurls her javelin into the bushes across the path. Fearing the oracle's safety, the elf of Thysrial's arm reaches up to pull her down.
Across the path, the bush briefly vibrates violently as the goblin squeals, Whoah! Recovering itself, there is the familiar creak of wood. An instant later, a wooden arrow streaks out of the tall grass into the foliage. Alas, Rennyn's efforts were too late. The goblin's arrow finds its mark and buries deep into the oracles shoulder. The oracle's shriek from the pain of her wound is answered by a manic cackle, Hehehe!

Further down the path, the sound of combat rises. Reeling from the wild swings of the half-orc before him, the goblin steps away. Aaah! Getz back! Lifting its bow, it looses an arrow at the monstrosity, catching him on the underside of his raised arm. The sharp tip of the goblin's arrow pierces the half-orc's shirt and kisses the hero's powerful arm leaving a streak of crimson in its wake.

Draeven:
Draeven is only aware of these goblins. He has also realized these goblins carry a mark normally reserved for elite 'commandos' squads of most goblin clans - how else would they be doing so well? :P

PAUSE
Now before everyone get's panicky, this is how things could pan out when one PC drops the ball and doesn't post regularly. I know I've set the bar pretty high by expecting daily posting and while a little absence is ok during RP portions, combat is more demanding. :/
Obviously, Jeryn's turn has been missed, so let's retcon a couple things:
1. I'd rather not, but in the absence of any direction, Jeryn will repeat his earlier action. (I'd rather another player FA a direction instead, eg. Jeryn, hit it again!)
2. The other goblin has taken a MA to retreat from Draeven. Silly GM, this provokes an AoO :P Should Draeven hit and do enough harm, he won't take any damage. But if the rolling machine is not kind, the goblin's action stands.

PUSH PLAY

A flash of terror plays out in Jeryn's mind, Fenra's still in the open, that thing is going to... The image of an incapacitated Fenra laying in the tall grass fills the wizard with anger.
No! Raising his hand once more, Jeryn recants the same word he evoked earlier. The air is distorted as an invisible bolt of force hurtles towards the hidden figure. Colliding with its target, the body of a goblin is lifted from hiding and sent limply into the foliage behind it.

Goblin blood sprays the hulking half-orc and vegetation, Eeeek! The goblin's arms flinch to its sides as it realizes what the green monster's axe has done. Looking down at its spilled entrails, the goblin drops its bow and desperately attempts to stuff them back in. Soon blood fills its mouth and no longer able to breath, the goblin looks up, its eyes roll back and collapses to the ground.

The sound of combat fades as the party realizes the goblin threat has past. Insects begin to buzz around the bodies as the smell of blood mixes with the scent of fish and algae that normally lingers in this part of the Brinestump.

Yes you can basically assume Jeryn will be flinging puny force missiles most of the time. Nothing compared to the power of a sword strike but it's what he's got until he gains some levels. I just went through the spellbook and deleted everything that showed up in '1001' spells. It gave me access to a grand total of 6 level 1 spells, of which I have chosen 3 to know (as told by herolab). I have read through what it takes to copy spells from another spellbook and I imagine I haven't had time to do that yet, but once our party has some down time I plan to copy over some spells from the dead mage's book. I've updated my spellbook on my profile so that Jeryn's might may be laid bare for all to see! Mage is a bit of a learning curve but so far enjoyable and it's really fun to play the high intelligence character!

You are doing something seriously wrong in HeroLab. If you go to the Pathfinder PRD spell list and filter for wizard/sorcerer 1st level spells from all sources, you get a list of approximately 136 spells. You must not have all the source files purchased for HeroLab or don't have them activated under the "Configure Hero" tab in HeroLab. Heck, even just the Core book has 40 1st level spells to choose from so I'm not sure how you are getting only 6 to choose from. :P

Oh and by the way, you can only use force missile 7/day. And a wizard's spellbook begins play containing ALL 0-level cantrips along with 3 1st-level spells.

The large half-orc you saw bound into the bushes up the trail a moment ago, emerges from the same spot, this time dragging his obviously dead quarry by one leg. As he comes down the path towards you, great ax strapped to his back, he stops and reaches into the bushes and retrieves the goblin Jeryn felled. He then drags the two of them to the foot of the bridge before unceremoniously dropping them.

Can you grab that one? he remarks to Rennyn who complies and adds the third goblin to the pile.

Lucky for you I was in the area today. I have been tracking the goblins movements here in the swamps for Shalelu. I'm just sorry I didn't get here in time to warn you of the ambush.

Rennyn extends a hand while addressing the newcomer, Your arrival was very fortunate indeed. Fenra seemed intent on giving those gobbies as much target practice as they could ever want.

I am Rennyn, this is of course Fenra, and our distracted friend bringing up the rear is Jeryn.

Draeven, is the short reply given in response as he shakes Rennyn offered hand and bows slightly at Fenra. Nodding in greeting at Jeryn he adds, He may be tardy, but his contribution was helpful.

Turning his attention back to the defeated goblins, Draeven then begins searching the remains.

You are working with Shalelu friend? So are we. Perhaps we can work together. What do you say?

The ranger does not take his eyes off of his task as he replies, I usually work... alone... but... sure. If Shalelu sent you it would only make sense. Draeven does not leave anything to chance, stripping the goblins of all their possessions and thoroughly examining everything, not matter how trivial. When he is finished he suggests lashing them to the trees as a warning to other goblins.

Fenra greets the hulking brute with much warmth and harumphs at Rennyn's mention of her 'scratches'.

When Draeven comments on Jeryn's felling of the goblin Fenra pouts her lip while wiping the blood off of herself and examining her wounds before exclaiming, but only because I softened him up!, while giving Jeryn a wink.

She continues to examine herself for injury, indiscriminately and obliviously rearranging her clothing to get a better look which results in many flashes of exposed skin.

When she is satisfied that any bleeding has been seen to she addresses Draeven properly. Your arrival was timely to say the least, but I was not sure at first if you were our savior or another enemy! Shalelu must like to keep things close to her chest; I wonder how many more allies may be wandering around here we don't know about?

Rennyn looks at Fenra as she brushes off his comment. My dear, you were one well placed arrow from ending up like these three, he says sternly while jerking a thumb at the pile of dead goblins.

Knowing her likely response, he adds quickly, Better to dirty your dress with dirt as opposed to blood, yes?

Draeven blinks at the lovely lass. Softened him up? Your javelin throw was wide of the mark I am afraid.

In response to Fenra's questions, the half-orc replies simply, Yes she does, and any number would not surprise me, from none to many.

After stringing up the goblin's for show, Draeven nods in the direction the group had been moving before the ambush. I can take lead, he says as he begins moving down the path.

The dead goblins have little of worth. All carried crudely made short bows strung with animal sinew, arrows tipped with sharpened stone or shells and thin leathers sewn together into armored plates. Strange trinkets of bone and colorful string adorn their bodies and or equipment and one of them carried a pouch of dried meats of unknown varieties.

Leaving the bodies to the creatures of the swamp, the group follows Draeven's lead. The dirt path winds its way past strange plants, vines and twisted trees. Not very long into the trek, there is another bridge. Having crossed this previously, Draeven is not overly concerned to its safety, however something else catches his keen eyes. A subtle ripple in the slow moving waters below. Stopping, Draeven traces the source; just over 30 feet away, a large reptile has materialized from the murky habitat over which the party now treads. Pulling itself up onto a sandy break, the hot sun glistens off of its back as the creature's stout legs propel it ashore.

Knowledge: The creature is one of Brinestump's many crocodiles that inhabit these water ways. It is mid-day and it appears the heat of the sun has drawn this specimen from the murky depths to warm itself.

From your vantage point on the bridge, the pouch of meat sails through the air and lands softly in the grasses nearby. Obscured by branches, it is difficult to tell how the crocodile reacted, however judging from its tail, the only part of this massive reptile still visible, it has not moved.
The sand break is on the side of the creek the party has just left. You recall the trail behind you had turned sharply away from the creek not far from where the crocodile rests. Retracing your steps, would bring you closer...
