Fenra stood in awe as the spirit of the god manifested itself and described poor Gibber's pain struggle. Tears flowed freely from her eyes and when the presence was gone she closed them and began to move. Her feet and arms gracefully whirled and weaved and after a short moment, when her body became still again, she blew a kiss into the wind.

While feeling a particular pull to the gods and goddesses whose domain is the sky and stars, her prayers have often been directed to others who have touched her in some way and so this time her prayer dance was a thanks to Gozreh for accepting the little goblin.

After everyone has recovered from the divine experience she looks at the map and agrees with Rennyn.

To the ship.

Hearts brimming with confidence, the group pushes onwards into the swamp. Although the Brinestump has not changed from yesterday, there is a feeling of well being. The stifling heat and the continuing presence of incessant swarms of flies are now somehow tolerable, if only in your minds. Using the late cleric’s map, the group makes good time and shortly after the sun crests at its highest point, the gentle sounds of waves crashing are soon heard. As the air begins to lighten and the smell of sea fills your nostrils, the group finds itself following a grassy trail. Spongy ground gives way to sand and salt. Yet this does not stop the Brinestump. Full of life, its twisted trees, thick grasses and stinging plants remain abundant. Rounding a bend the burnt out remains of an old beached craft come into view.

Lodged in a shallow pool of water, Draeven feels this ship was run aground. Although there is not much left, judging from the state of the vessel, it was perhaps wrecked during a particularly violent storm. While Rennyn's assesment of the ship is it is quite old — perhaps having crashed here several decades ago. And noting the remnants of two masts, Fenra remembers from her travels having seen similar shaped vessels hailing from Cheliax. Despite severe scorch marks throughout the hull, strange, faded writing on its bow is still visible. Recognizing this as Tien writing, the ranger guesses, with perhaps a little help from the labeling on the map, that this reads Kaijitsu Star.

At the clearing

Immediately after the vision ends, Jeryn sits on the ground and quickly grabs some parchment, a quill and small ink pot from his traveling sack. He writes, in as good of detail as possible, everything that he just witnessed. Once completed, he presses the others to explain what they saw so that he could document it as well. It is not every day that one experiences divine visitation. I must make sure there is record of it. While memory fades, written word perseveres.

In the present

As the ship comes into view, Jeryn says I doubt there is anything of value to be found in a wreck so old, but there is also no harm in searching. Perhaps we will spot something that other adventurers have passed over.

Quietly calling upon his connection to the divine, Rennyn begins scanning the wreckage. For the first few minutes, the paladin's elven eyes seem distant, unfocused on any one thing yet keenly aware of his surroundings all the same. As Rennyn concentrates, the sound of the rolling waves and the feel of the sea breeze is all that disturbs those in the Brinestump. For now, Rennyn's eyes see no auras of evil lurking on the first section of the scorched hull (OP16-OP18).

While focusing on one individual or object, the paladin does not detect evil in any other object or individual within range. There are a lot of items to lay your focus on here. I'm assuming Rennyn will spend a few minutes to scan the shipwreck only, but am unsure of how much he should be able to scan and in what amount of time. I'm thinking half a minute to scan each 5ft square sounds reasonable (thoughts?). How much time do you want to devote to this and where will you look?
In the meantime, your positions are randomly placed, do you have preferences?

~Elf Champion (Paladin) 8~ Perc +11 (+2 to init) AC 28 HP 110 Fort +14 Ref +12 Will +13 PATHBUILDER Link

That line you are quoting is a reference as to how the paladin's detect evil ability supersedes the spell. A paladin can use detect evil as the spell, meaning he can use a standard action to scan a 60' cone emanating from him for the presence or absence of evil. The second round he knows how many auras and the power of the most potent aura in the area. The third round he knows the power and location of each aura but not its exact location (just direction) if it is outside his LoS.

The line you mention is how a paladin can skip right to the end with a move action (only needing one round as opposed to three) if he only focuses on one object or individual. It is all right there in the bits you omitted.
"At will, a paladin can use detect evil, as the spell. A paladin can, as a move action, concentrate on a single item or individual within 60 feet and determine if it is evil, learning the strength of its aura as if having studied it for 3 rounds. While focusing on one individual or object, the paladin does not detect evil in any other object or individual within range."

So Rennyn will take 12-18 seconds to scan the entire wreckage (and much of the surroundings) for the presence of evil. Should he detect any, he will take an additional 6-18 seconds to determine the number of auras and the strength of the most potent one.

Thanks for the clarification Rennyn! :) We can keep my previous post and retcon the bit where only part of the hull is 'scanned'. Scanning the area still eats up some time (which was the bit I was trying to figure out) but not as much as thought. In any case, no auras are detected.

Gaining access to the ship is relatively easy from the beach. Smashed to pieces by the storm that carried it here, there is little remaining of the interior of this vessel. Flooded, the smell of charcoal lingers on the frame. Signs of aquatic life cling to the submerged lower section. The old wood of this ship may have been completely consumed by the fire had it not been so water logged from the waters that continually lap at its sides. Toward the aft, two compartments remain intact.

As tall clouds take shape in the east, Draeven focuses on the wreck. Unfortunately, if there were any tracks leading to or from the vessel, they have long since been washed away from the rolling waves. Moving to the first compartment, Draeven sees that these doors have fared no better than the rest of the ship. The singed planks that comprise the body of each door have come apart, leaving large gaps between them. Whatever sort of latching mechanism that was used here has also dropped away; probably buried in the sand beneath the water logged hold below.

In the first compartment, Draeven finds dozens of bones. Tossed into a pile, they appear to all have been striped of their flesh. The shape and size of some look familiar. Having seen plenty of dead and, indeed, been personally responsible for the butchering of dozens, the ranger quickly concludes that these are the remnants of goblins. He finds it odd that these bones have been separated from each other and placed into a pile. Goblins are known to burn the bodies of their brethren - mostly for entertainment than for any religious purpose. But the bodies on those funeral pyres are usually intact.

Entering the second chamber, Draeven sees the remains of someone's living quarters. Broken furniture lays on the floor before a backdrop of equally pristine shelving. Hanging from one wall, there is little of interest here either. Turning to leave, Draeven stumbles upon another body. Still very rotten, the cadaver is partially submerged save for an arm and part of its torsal. There is enough flesh here to identify it as another goblin. A lot older than a typical goblin, white hair still clings to its submerged skull. Both eyes have been eaten, likely by crabs, and chucks of flesh remain half attached, half floating in the dark waters that have flooded this chamber. Judging from the angle at which its head has come to rest, this one met a violent death.

Using the map as a guide, Rennyn has the group briefly retrace its steps before turning south towards the spot marked "Home". The journey requires navigating around several large waterways and quickly brings back memories of yesterday's hunt for goblins. Although the clouds over Sog's Bay continue to build strength in the east, the cooling winds they bring with them barely penetrate the canopy of trees much less break the humidity choking the trails below. Walking along the maze of trails and across several bridges, occasionally sudden movements in the underbrush or in the tree canopy draw your attention.

While Draeven is sure these mysteries are merely the calls of mundane animals, here the low growls and bellows somehow take on eerie, menacing tones which instill darker images. Perhaps it is a trick on the ear. But then, with all the death that fills these wetlands, the Brinestump persists in somehow feeling haunted.
Interrupting these gentle reminders of the life that fills the Brinestump, brief gusts of wind rustle leaves and bend the branches overhead. Another bridge crossing. The creaking of its boards draws the splashing of something large. Remembering the crocodile previously encountered, Jeryn catches a glimpse of the very creature through the swamp of the creature here just out of sight. Could it be the same one? Does this creature stalk us?
However Jeryn's thoughts of crocodiles quickly fade as the wizard's eyes whirl around to warn the others. Quickly spotting the numerous webs that now block the path, large snapping teeth and a thick green leathery hide morph into lots of legs. Eight to be exact. Alerted to the danger, Rennyn halts the group. Resting in one of the trees above (Z48,48) is a large dark colored creature. A pair of red spots are visible on its ventrum, divided by a single stripe down its dorsal. Eyeing the group, the spider flexes two black pincers...

There should be no range increment penalty on that attack as Draeven is within 10' of the large spider (unless you are factoring in elevation). It still misses due to concealment of course. It might help if you made the spider map token large sized.

And speaking of range increment penalties on its web attacks, I see you didn't use them on its initial web attack. Would have been miss if you had.

Tethering the web and opposed str is all good in my books.

As for the fireworks, it is totally not worth spending numerous rounds/actions sheathing my sword, retrieving the firework, lighting it (with what exactly?) and waiting another round for it to go off just to make a to hit roll (with concealment) to do on average 7 damage (save for half) and a 50/50 chance to make it blind for 1 round. (Making it deaf is useless.)

And this is assuming someone is even carrying them. I assume that we sold them or left them behind. Neither of my characters are carrying them nor intend to use them ever.

Even if I had them, I have no way of lighting them and they are not better than 3 rounds of bow shots. The spider sways its head within the tree from side to side; it is as though it is trying to get a better look. Then responding to Jeryn words, its harsh voice hisses, Gawb'bn. G'eeen. There is disgust in mixed in and it is clear the wizards words appear to carry little weight with this creature. However there is some understanding.

Re: Diplomacy...I always forget that :/

The ranger's arrow darts across the path and into the branches concealing the spider. His arrow striking home, the spider winces, Hueee! As the branches rattle and more leaves rain to the ground, another shimmering ribbon of webbing erupts from the creature's abdomen. Longer than the last shot, this time a few of the spider's many legs catch hold of the end just as the bulk of it covers half-orc once more. Draeven feels himself immediately being tugged toward the tree.

Ok, going for the net attack again. Lets starting with an opposed Str check and go from there. The goal, next round, will be the spider dragging Draeven up into the tree. Am not sure how far the spider can drag Draeven in one round, 5ft? 15ft? | Fenra and Jeryn are up!

Jeryn's eagle winks into existence and he immediately wills it to dive into the tree and rend the spider with beak and talons. To support the eagle, he fires a force bolt toward the spider. Now that diplomacy has failed, he knows that this confrontation will end in death - preferably for the spider.

Diving into the tree, Jeryn's eagle screams and there is a small explosion of feathers and leaves. The tempo of combat raised, the spider shifts violently to avoid the bird's attacks. Indeed, the entire tree comes alive as the spider's weight and girth move to defend itself. It is not entirely successful though. Momentarily distracted by the impact of another of the wizard's force bolts, the eagle manages to sink it's beak into one of the spider's limbs, puncturing a trochanter. A thick green fluid squirts forth and the spider jerks violently causing a couple of the smaller branches to snap, sending them crashing to the earthen floor below.

Just curious how there is concealment when in base to base.

The shaking of the tree doesn't encourage Fenra in her attack but she reloads the crossbow and fires it anyway.

crossbow: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
concealment: 1d100 ⇒ 12

The violent movement of the tree causes her to miss the already difficult to see target.

Looking frustrated, the spider gives a few short, raspy hisses as it shifts its mass within the tree. Leery of the circling eagle, it tries to find a good angle for the goblin's change in position.
Finding a suitable position, it flexes its spinnerets. The spider is about to launch another web when its punctured leg suddenly folds. Bathed in its own green fluids, the leg has become unreliable, choosing now to give out and the spider's body lurches as webbing spurts out. Forced to catch itself, its shot misses, covering the base of the tree instead.

@Draeven: Ok, retconning spider's action then...

Spotting its prey scurry along the path, the spider reacts. Once more, the tree shakes violently as the spider climbs down to pursue Draeven (Z47) across the path. However, just as the creature's chelicerae are about to send its fangs into the ranger's flesh, its punctured leg folds. Momentarily unstable, it misses wildly and the spider hisses with frustration.

Am going to wave off an AoO from the eagle due to cover from the tree but will allow Fenra roll her crossbow attack without concealment.
