Don't forget, Haste gives you a second attack on a full attack action. And you were only 5 feet away when I checked (something may have changed)... and you should also get flanking with the earth elemental or Ary, depending on your square choice. :)

Isn't haste gone?

If I still have haste and I can actually do that, I will draw my dagger as part of my 5-foot step and attack Arastrax if Jorsal's new save works. If Jorsal's new save does not work, I won't attack Jorsal.

Dagger vs. Arastrax (Haste, Inspired): 1d20 + 5 + 1 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 5 + 1 + 3 = 20
Damage (Inspired): 1d4 + 1 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 1 + 3 = 5

If I understand correctly, all of the buff spells should be on Jorsal and not on Arastrax, so I'm neglecting to roll for concealment.

WotR Global Buffs/Debuffs: ----

Haste is gone. He does get flanking with the earth elemental. His attack roll is 21. You can certainly draw your dagger as part of the 5' step.

Xanderghul reaches through the fire shield as Ary grabs hold of his arm, holding him still enough for him to grasp the wrist of his friend. Inside, Jorsal struggles against the demon inside of him, screaming out his rage mentally though no one can hear him - but it has been so, so long he's been alone and afraid in the darkness... he just doesn't have the strength anymore to fight back as he once did. There is a faint twitching on Jorsal's face, a grimace that Xanderghul recognizes, but Arastrax ultimately reasserts control of his body.

Xanderghul fire shield damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Jorsal Will Save vs Arastrax (WIS damage, PoE): 1d20 + 7 - 5 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 7 - 5 + 2 = 17
If anyone has anything to do here with an immediate action, you have 24 hrs to intervene.

Book keeping: Xanderghul takes 7 damage from the fire shield. He discharges Protection from Evil onto Jorsal's body.

Isilme is up!

WRONG ALIAS

"We need to knock Jorsal out. It might force Arastrax to flee his body," Isilme whispers quickly when she realizes that Xanderghul's spell failed.

As the rune floating above her begins to fade, Isilme begins playing a fast piece on her flute that seems unbound by the normal strictures of music. Jumping from key to key and rhythm to rhythm, the melody seems to be impossible to pin down.

There was little else she could do at this point but offer advice and trust in the others to find a solution. All her magic had been expended at this point, and she had nothing in the way of consumables that would apply to freeing Jorsal. All she could do now was focus on preventing the tentacles from interfering with the others' attempts to free him.

kay that's what I thought ;)

"Fools! Insolent pests! Do you know who I am? Do you know how many of your ilk I've slain by my hands, or cut apart on my tables? You will not defeat me!" Arastrax roars. He clutches his head, struggling to force Jorsal back down into him... he screams, and his face starts to bulge and distort into a long snout. He grows bigger, bigger still... enormous horns sprout out of his head, his feet transformed into hooves... until Jorsal's body no longer remains, in its place, a fearsome minotaur!

After making it over the dirt wall in the center of the room, Sosiel makes his way up the stairs. His eyes widen as he looks up at the monster up the stairs, and he quickly grabs hold of Valaria's wrist, imbuing her with positive energy. Meanwhile, Markus glances up the stairs and sends another healing spell her way.

Upset that his gambit has failed, Xanderghul shifts back, hoping that one of his stronger allies might step in between him and the huge minotaur. He has no wish to be ground into paste by apparently-transmuted minotaur fists. Gathering up some shadows, he hurls some at the minotaur. He has to conserve his last three offensive spells for the actual shadow demon that they still must defeat.

Ah, a minotaur. Of course, Ehren thinks as he heads in the opposite direction, ignoring Arastrax's indignant speech. He knew that he needed to get out of the tangle of tentacles before Isilme's bardic magic expired. It was unfortunate that Jorsal had not managed to shake off Arastrax's influence, but it did make sense. His willpower had no doubt eroded after being the demon's vessel for so long. Saving him was still a priority, but with the way things were going, it was becoming clear that he needed to be a little more forceful.

Once he is clear of the tentacles, Ehren waves a hand at the huge minotaur, evoking a burst of green light. The light clings to "Jorsal" as an aura of green flame, essentially negating his illusory protection, and clashing horribly with his shield of red fire. Only then does he speak out to his elemental. "Athrú pleananna. Buail air leis gach rud atá agat!"

Druidic:
"Change of plans. Hit him with everything you have!"

The earth elemental obliges, its fingers grinding against its hands as its fists tighten. Continuing its assault, it raises both fists over its head before bringing them slamming against the minotaur.

Ehren moves out of the black tentacles and casts faerie fire on Jorsal. The earth elemental switches to Power Attack and lethal damage.

"Right, right. So, the horny prick is really into making his body his own, huh? Hey moo cow. Bet you can't hit me with a fireball!" Anevia calls as she fires off a far-too-quick shot that goes well-astray. She glares at her bow, "You and I are going to have a talk about this, later." then quickly strings another arrow, ducking back to the nearby stairs, and getting into some quick cover to hopefully play some mind games.

Without Faith's bastion of tricks to back up her words, Ary's words are just that - words. Seeing that she couldn't help Jorsal without knocking him out first, she takes a moment to briefly inhale and exhale, giving Ehren the time he needed to make the real Jorsal fully apparent. Focusing on bringing the brute to the ground, her initial attack is a complete misstep, though she recovers beautifully. Wounded and weary as she is, though, her strike is ultimately unlikely to bring the oaf down. As her first strike connects, the motes don't even leave her shield, instead flowing straight into the arm that had been bitten deeply by Jorsal's sword.

WRONG ALIAS

Isilme continues her playing for the moment while pondering whether getting involved directly in the fight herself would help or hinder the others.

Doing nothing but maintaining performance this round.

WotR Global Buffs/Debuffs: ----

Some pretty sad rolls that round, guys, haha.

The minotaur grins as Valaria's dagger goes flying wildly past his head - she had overcompensated too much to avoid hitting the earth elemental in front of her. He surveys the battle calmly, noting Anevia's position across the room. Ary slams her shield into the minotaur through his fire shield, but in doing so she tears open one of her wounds just barely healed by Markus' magic. Wispy motes float around her from Faith, working to heal her back up again, but it isn't enough to counter her fresh burn wounds from the encounter with him.

Just as the earth elemental's final, weak, blow lands on Arastrax's body he is suddenly illuminated in green light. The elemental trembles and dissolves into clods of dirt - melding back into the earth from where it came. This distracts the minotaur long enough for Xanderghul to manage to ensnare him in shadow... the beast roars, and swings wildly back at Ary with its enormous longsword. His blade screams through the air with a keening whine as it hones in on Ary's neck... just in the nick of time, Hinagiku pulls the minotaur down to the ground, saving her life. Arastrax grunts as he pushes himself back up into a fighting stance.

Sosiel's eyes widen at the sight... he takes a moment to steel his resolve and ward himself with protective magic before heading up the stairs to help his friends. Meanwhile, sweat pours down Markus' brow as he maintains concentration on healing Ary... he seals up the worst of the damage around her neck before breaking the spell.

"I am unable to contribute more. I am sorry," he murmurs, visibly exhausted.

Ehren casts Faerie Fire on Jorsal. His earth elemental vanishes. Xanderghul entangles Jorsal. Arastrax crits Ary for 45 damage, gets tripped, gets up, provokes AoOs? Ary is in critical condition. Sosiel casts sanctuary on himself. Markus heals Ary for 11 HP.

As soon as the minotaur begins to stand, Ary unflinchingly swings at him, her blade glittering through the fire. She glares, annoyed by the singes, and then he immediately slams her bodily downwards against the stairs, cleaving a horrific wound into her torso, despite her breastplate. She's left barely able to stand.

Possibly unable to at all, if she hit with another of her attacks due to lack of concealment. Did someone catch the license plate on that truck?

"Well, f&++. K. Was trying to save this, but oh well." Anevia mutters as she swoops down the stairs and dives headlong into the nightmare scene that was Jorsal's Pleasure Paradise, forgoing stealth entirely; their foe seemed to have a preternatural knowledge of where she'd be. The minotaur had certainly managed to break at least her spirit. She draws back her shortbow without an arrow, lines up a shot, and fires directly at the minotaur, a longsword appearing in the space between before opening a very real hole in whatever it connected with. "You guys know he can't easily fit down the stairs now, right? Like, his only way down is into his own tentacle mess. So like... if we leave for a bit, maybe..?"

Ary half-tumbles down the stairs from the force of the blow, unable to get clear of Jorsal's sword in time, but Anevia already has another arrow nocked and ready to fly at the minotaur's blade the next time he tries something against one of her allies. "I will never abandon a companion." she mutters.

If Ary gets clear, she'll launch her cure moderate wounds from her weapon sheath into her hand and drink it.

Ehren cringes, but it is hard to tell whether Ary's current predicament or Anevia's remark is to blame. Maybe a little bit of both. Searching for a better vantage point, he climbs the opposite stairway, far away from the angry minotaur. Isilme frowns as Ary falls to the ground. They were suffering horrible attrition due to the flame shield. Hopefully this was worth it. It seemed Arastrax at the moment was still committed to winning this battle, and while she believed they would still triumph, it was clear that the costs could be heavy if things went poorly.

At least she could aid Ary in getting back into the fight. Taking a brief break from playing the Symphony, she digs out a wand and tucks it in her belt for easy access. Then, resuming the hectic tune, she begins moving towards the stairs, hoping she'll be able to get Ary back up shortly.

Valaria and Hinagiku are up!

Buffs | Char. Sheet |

The pain of her burns had made Hinagiku prudent, she could not let Jorsal’s shield of fire bring her down. Yet, with Ary’s fall, there seem to be little choice, she needed to end this. Looking up at the triumphant minotaur, she notices the sheen of his sweat, the vulnerability of a tired opponent. Taking her chance, she strikes at the creatures hip bones and ribs in the hope to finally bring it down.

Val flicks another knife from her bandoleer and takes careful aim at Jorsal's form. This time, she aims more carefully, lining up the shot before hurling it through the tangle of bodies on the stairs and straight into the center of his chest.

Seeing the opening, Hinagiku quickly wheels, driving her leg into the side of the minotaur's knee, at the cost of a pretty nasty burn on her calf. He falls as his support is knocked out from under him, hitting the stone ground heavily and falling unconscious. The bull's feature slowly vanish - horns retreating into skin, fur shrinking back into flesh, until Jorsal's unconscious body remains.

Dark smoke seems to emanate from Jorsal's body - the shadow demon slowly emerges. It shudders in the daylight - great ripples vibrating across its amorphous body - it is utterly powerless, and it knows it. Arastrax emerges, then wordlessly vanishes into the stone wall next to it.

Hinagiku Fire Shield damage: 2d6 + 16 ⇒ (4, 3) + 16 = 23

Book keeping: Hinagiku deals 17 damage to Arastrax, KOing him. She takes 23 damage from fire shield and is wounded.

Hinagiku may AoO Arastrax as he flees.

Unless Valaria has a way... or someone else has an immediate action way to impede Arastrax from going into the wall, combat is over.

Combat ends!

Sosiel CMW on Ary: 2d8 + 10 ⇒ (4, 1) + 10 = 15

Sosiel moves out of the writhing tentacles and up the stairs. He grips Ary's arm, channeling the last of his magic into her... her eyes flutter open, though with her consciousness comes the sudden surge of pain from her many, many wounds.

Isilme continues her performance until the others finish moving out of the still-writing tentacles, then she allows herself to breathe a sigh of relief.

As she reaches the upper level, she looks at Jorsal and then at Xanderghul "I must admit I was wrong Xanderghul, I had assumed since the beginning that Jorsal was directly involved. But you and Val were right that he had been possessed. I am pleased that we were able to rescue him."

She walks up to Jorsal and presses her wand to his chest, preparing to heal him with it.

When she finishes, she turns to the others. "We should search the rest of the tower now before the demons get a chance to come back and take anything that might be of value."

"To be honest, my mind did not go to possession at the outset," responds Xanderghul, arching an eyebrow. He looks for a passageway that goes where Arastrax had gone. Maybe the shadow demon had gone outside and teleported away? Xanderghul peeks out of a window.

"But I had found it hard to believe that the man I had known for twenty years had been deceiving us all for so long."

"Plus, he usually never turns down a beer."

Ehren's shoulders sag with relief when the minotaur falls and turns back into Jorsal, but he does not let down his guard entirely. Despite their retreat, the shadow demons could still be in the tower. He doubted that they would dare approach while his daylight spell was still up, but there were ways around it.

"Are you okay, Hinagiku? Xanderghul?" he asks, uncertain of what being possessed entailed, or whether it inflicted any lasting harm. It certainly was not an experience that he wanted to go through. He lets out a sigh and shakes his head. "For a moment I thought we'd lost the two of you."

By the time Isilme reaches Jorsal, the fire shield has vanished from his body, making it safe for her to heal him. Compared to the other heroes, his wounds are minor at best - mostly deep bruises from having been pummeled repeatedly by Hinagiku and the earth elemental. Meanwhile, Xanderghul glances out of the nearest arrow slit. Outside, it is bright and sunny. It doesn't seem like a probable place for Arastrax to have gone.

It takes a few moments, but Jorsal comes to. He groans - struggling to lift his body off the ground with his arms - he has to relearn using his own muscles, it has been so long since he's been able to stand on his own two feet of his own free will.

Instead of rising, he kneels. "Th-thank you," he coughs out, his own lips strange to him. "I owe you all my life."

Finally, he stands, addressing Xanderghul. "...Xan. It is good to see you." He exhales sharply. "I hate to know what you think of me now. That I let a demon get the best of me for so long."

Xanderghul grumbles. "I really need to learn dimensional anchor..." he says.

When Jorsal awakens, Xanderghul only shrugs, helping to pick his friend off of the ground. "It's okay. I guess you just get to feel lucky that you have friends to save you - benefits of being Good, I guess."

I got a question. Could I get Sosiel to prepare the spell, and then create a scroll with his help, and then scribe that into my book?"

WotR Global Buffs/Debuffs: ----

No, I've decided the creator needs to know the spell components for wands/scrolls/rods/potions. He could help make a wondrous item that needed dimensional anchor, but not a scroll.

Isilme aids Xanderghul in righting Jorsal. She had great sympathy for the man, as he had basically just awoken from a living nightmare which had lasted who-knows-how-long.

"It is no shame to have been possessed, there is little you can do if the demons are prepared for it. I imagine you suffered through truly horrible things, given what we found in Arastrax's lair. I cannot promise you that you will ever truly be free of what you experienced, but it will recede with time. You can, however work to right as many wrongs as you can. You likely have intelligence that Arastrax and the other demons never intended for the Crusades to have. Turning that knowledge against them could make all the difference going forward, especially if we can act quickly upon it."

WotR Global Buffs/Debuffs: ----

Jorsal closes his eyes as Isilme mentions Arastrax's lair. He starts breathing rapidly, and it takes a few moments before he can regain his composure - he breathes deeply several times. Finally, he speaks. "Yes.... the Pathfinder Lodge. That I... no... Arastrax built. It's been used as a place to disguise cultists among the crusades... I must return to Nerosyan, once things are settled out here... before the Templars of the Ivory Labyrinth can scurry back into their hiding holes."

He pauses. "But I get ahead of myself. This is the first time we are truly meeting.... though I have heard of you all for some time now. I am Jorsal, Pathfinder-turned-Crusader. It is good to meet you. I wish it were in better circumstances."

Having destroyed the shortcut, Ehren waits until the writhing mass of tentacles vanishes before taking the long way over to the other side.

"Yes, it is very good," he agrees, smiling at Jorsal reassuringly. After a moment however, his smile wavers somewhat. "I must confess, until recently I thought that our next meeting would be as true enemies. Arastrax had you painted as a traitor. There are many that still believe that to be the case. It is a notion we will have to dispel."

Xanderghul nods. "Ehren's right, There may be some work involved with getting people to trust you again. Luckily, I don't think that news of Arastrax's lair ever became widespread knowledge. However, all the demons calling you "Warlord" might take a bit to shake off."

He jabs Jorsal in the shoulder. "It's good that you're back. Ehren, Valaria, do you want to come with me now, though? I need your daylight and your daggers to flush out the rest of the lair. I'm not sure where Arastrax might have gone." With the druid being the most-healthy team member other than himself and Valaria being basically alright due to Markus and Sosiel, he figures it's an alright small group.

"Indeed," she says, concurring. Isilme draws her rapier and allows her flute to vanish, tucking the wand of healing in her belt for the moment. "I will come along as well. At the very least I can still enchant my rapier if we encounter something, and my wand has plenty of charges remaining if we need further healing."

WotR Global Buffs/Debuffs: ----

Waiting for Ehren to confirm he wants to come along before moving forwards with that plan

Markus nods. He glances between the party members, assessing their injuries. "Once you're ready, Ary and Hinagiku need to be tended to by the clerics as well. We don't have many resources left among them, so it will be best if we get groups together for the remaining channels. Whatever wounds are left will need to wait for the morning, unfortunately."

Sosiel shakes Jorsal's hand. "It's an honor to meet you. I think the others are right - it may take some time to recover your reputation - but I think many will be like myself... relieved that it wasn't true to begin with."

Jorsal returns the handshake, but he doesn't smile. "I still feel like I have to atone, though. I have so much... to atone for." He sighs then offers Xanderghul a weak smile. "And I believe I owe you a drink."

"You sure do, bud. Maybe we can all have a drink together to celebrate defeating this big offensive that you lead."

He pulls his crossbow from its holster and sheathes his dagger, ensuring for a second time that a cold iron bolt is loaded inot the weapon. There might still be enemies back there, and their resources are dangerously low.

"All right," Ehren replies, eager to investigate the rest of the tower. He had very little magic left at his disposal, but as Xanderghul suggested, his daylight wand was itself an invaluable asset. As he moves to leave however, he is given pause. "Hm. Sorry, Sosiel, would you mind holding onto this?"

The druid taps the wand against the cleric's glaive, imbuing it with the same radiant light as his shield. Eyeing the walls with a grimace, he explains, "Just in case."

"Wasn't it me that brought up the idea of possession?" Ary asks, blearily. "I can't really remember. Not sure it matters. Does anyone have any idea what he hit me wi-" she asks, pausing to look at the huge gash on her neck and shoulder; it hadn't resulted in any arterial bleeding, but that may have been only thanks to the rapid cauterization of engaging Arastrax. Or their divinity may have played a key roll.

Anevia meanwhile, picks her way around the battlefield, retrieving what servicable arrows she can. "Daylight's burning. Literally. Problem with moving around in here is that wherever we leave, the demons will be forced into. If we split up, they suddenly get forced to go where there's no daylight, and bam. Same fight all over. Unless you can twiddlefinger up some extra daylight without the first going out. My spells always fizzle when I try to redo them. If we can fill the whole place with daylight, they'll have nowhere to go - as long as we do it before dusk settles in completely. Chances are, they're entirely gone now, though. I know I'd have teleported away if I could do that and people were chasing me with giant balls of whatever-it-is-I'm-afraid-of-that-you-don't-need-to-know." before nodding at the second ball of light. "Neat."

Ary picks herself up off the floor. "I will shine in her legion." she states as she does so, her appearance becoming as pristine as the pedestrian victim of a hit-and-run could. "Yeah. It's good to meet you, Jorsa-. Sorry. Ser Jorsal. I'd taken to not using your title when we thought you didn't really deserve it." She rolls her shoulder and grimaces. "Dumb." she mutters, "You are not the perpetrator here, Jorsal. You have nothing to atone for, unless there's something you chose to do. You are your heart, not the weapon a shadow demon tried to make you into." she pauses, the words really having sounded better when she'd come up with them what felt like a lifetime ago. "Not every day a Mendevian Crusader gets to break bread with a former enemy warlord, is it? We should count our blessings that we won... and let the people outside know what's happened so the paladins will know to screen every last one of us."

Anevia's eyes widen. "Do you think the stone thingy we marched past with the big hole in it is where the Invidiaks were hiding during the day when they were prepping to retake this area? Or... did they not have to fight anything?"

Listening to the others plan an investigation without her she begins to speak out... but, a quick look at her own ragged self, sleeves and pants burnt, areas now completely deprived of her now usual raid hair, she rethinks her approach.

"Ary, everyone, I would prefer to come with you, I have no fear of the oni's illusions... and I feel confident that I can face their spells... if you would only let me get healed, I could join you on this search."

I honestly think that Hinagiku would be a great help if we find the shadow demons, however, I don't mind staying out of the search if you deem the task to be urgent.

Hinagiku stares into Xanderghul's eyes for a long moment. There is no defiance in her gaze. Rather, it appears to be weighting the shabti's dedication to his answer.

"Yes. Go, I will hurry back to your side as soon as I am healed."

Jorsal sighs. "I know that what you say is true, but the things I've witnessed, the things these hands have done," he clenches and unclenches his fists. "It was as if I did those things. The whole time, that monster was whispering to me, telling me that I... you know what, it doesn't matter. It is in the past, now, thanks to you."

Sosiel places a comforting hand on Jorsal's shoulder, and thanks Ehren with a smile as his glaive suddenly shimmers with the same brilliance as the druid's shield. "With beauty and grace," he says, watching Ehren, Xanderghul, Isilme, and Valaria head up the stairs.

Jorsal turns to follow Markus out of the tower. "There is a chapel on the premises here. It will be nice to attend services once again. I think that will help." Markus beckons Ary and Hinagiku to follow him out the door.

"Wait." Sosiel says. He glances through the bodies, then kneels beside of one of the half-orcs. "This one is still breathing," he says. "He has no fatal wounds... Should I help him?"

---

Ehren/Xanderghul/Isilme/Valaria

The heroes head up the stairs. They first head towards Arastrax's former office, as Valaria remembers its location. They head through one of the doors on the upper level into a room with a single bed, and some drawers for personal possessions. The heroes look around, checking every nook and shadow for evidence of the invidiaks.
