Temple map

The group of seasoned Pathfinders agents is summoned to a basement in of the Grand Lodge’s outbuildings.

This cold subterranean records hall is dim and quiet. In front of a heavy wooden door stands Venture-Captain Shevala Iorae, one of the Society’s premier experts on the ruined siege towers near Absalom. She waves and begins speaking eagerly as she approaches, the flame of her candle struggling against her pace.

"Hello! I’m sorry to summon you to such a bleak meeting space, but I’m gathering intelligence that I can really get only here. Come, you’ll have to see for yourselves." Venture-Captain Iorae gestures toward the wooden door behind her, saying, "Before we go in, tell me—do you know much about the Red Redoubt of Karamoss?"

Knowledge (arcana) DC20:

Karamoss was a wizard from Numeria known as the Machine Mage. He allegedly spent decades researching automatons inside the notorious technological dungeon known as Silver Mount, and was said to possess unparalleled mastery over all kinds of constructs and machines.

Knowledge (arcana) DC25:
The red metal from which the Red Redoubt was constructed is called djezeteel, and has an enhancing effect on magic.

Knowledge (arcana) DC30:
The robotic army that Karamoss used to attack Absalom is rumored to have been built within the siege tower itself, using forges powered by elemental energy from the Plane of Fire.

---

Knowledge (engineering) DC15:
The entire Red Redoubt was built in a single night out of a strange red skymetal alloy called djezeteel, said to have been invented by Karamoss himself.

Knowledge (engineering) DC20:
Though the aboveground sections of the tower were destroyed, the underground levels seemed to be sound. As far as anyone knows, there could be dozens of unexplored levels below the surface.

Knowledge (engineering) DC25:
Supplying power to the tower—and creating an army of constructs—would have required an immense amount of energy. The tower was likely equipped with a powerful energy source, possibly a massive Numerian power generator or some kind of magical reactor.

---

Knowledge (local) DC15:
The uppermost surviving levels of the Red Redoubt are considered relatively safe. Junior members of the Pathfinder Society are often run through obstacle courses here set up by their mentors.

Knowledge (local) DC20:
One recent such excursion took an unexpected turn when a team of Pathfinder recruits stumbled into an undiscovered sublevel of the siege tower. Since then, Pathfinder Society activity in the area has increased dramatically.

Knowledge (local) DC25:
Venture-Captain Shevala Iorae has led the new efforts to explore the Red Redoubt, and she has sent scouting teams into progressively deeper levels
of the tower. For the last few days, Shevala has not left the Grand Lodge, instead remaining cloistered below in a darkened records room.

"Well, the Red Redoubt..." begins Lort, scratching his beard thoughtfully, "For one... it is very... red. I believe it is also a redoubt - Hey, Ibid, what is a redoubt? A red doubt? Sounds... doubtful... - If I recall correctly, it also belonged to someone of either great or little fame by the name of Karamoss."

Lort looks rather pleased with himself. Incautious essay markers sometimes gave him points for repeating facts presented the question, so maybe this venture captain would also. Then something dawns on him, "Hey, Miro, Cyrus and Gunari! Didn't you guys go to the Red Redoubt and face off against some constructs of some kind? Wasn't that supposed to be your Confirmation?"

"Ha, I take it you mean in the records vault and not Absalom?" Lort laughs as Finarin enters, "It's not reading, I can tell you! When I'm not in a bar fight, I usually pass my time by looking for my next bar fight. I think I'm lost. Can anyone show me the way to the Stevedore's Rest? I need to tell someone loudly that 'dockworkers are slackers', and figured that was the perfect place to do it." Lort winks at his companions.

"Seriously, though, Captain Iorae over here promised me a chance to fight some things that I didn't need to feel guilty about killing... not that I ever did, mind! I make it a habit only to kill those things trying to kill me, my friends or innocents... and yes those three groups are mutually exclusive. Ha!"

DC 30 indeed. Of course, it may as well be DC 20 for all the good my knowledge skills will be here! Welcome to the big leagues - tier 5-9 adventures that is - so excited.

Miro strides to the front, having been a little behind due to his short paces. "It was quite an experience, Venture Captain! Lort, Cyrus, you should have seen it! There were all these crazy gadgets! The Asmodean inquisitor groans when he sees who he has been teamed up with once more. "Lort, you buffoon, your drunkard friend of a warpriest is once again nursing a hangover nearly the size of your ego. He was offered an 'alchemist's friend', but chose to pass, saying something about the Drunken Hero being displeased with him. That's about when the page found me, and suggested I show up here."

He ponders what has been said. "Machines, you say, slip*? I fought some Numerian horrors in the Blackros Museum, a couple of months ago. The team that I was assigned to, late, had just been handed their asses on a machined platter... but The Final Arbitration made short work of those... mechanical abominations."

He turns to Ibid, "Jealous? Hmm... Interesting. In any case, all of that is good to know."

He turns to the Venture-Captain and asks, "So, Venture-Captain Iorae, for what... pleasure... have we been summoned to serve?"

* Slip is a Chelish term for halflings... yes, completely derogitory. In Cheliax, halflings are quite often used as slaves.

Shevala's (picture) eyes widen in astonishment. "Well done! It looks like I have a team that can do it's research. And some you were there during the incident, very good. Now, let's proceed." She opens the heavy wooden door into a cramped records room, eliciting a painful cry from inside, followed by curses in a strange language. The room is even darker than the hall outside, lit only by a few small candles. A sturdy wooden chair stands in the center of the room, on which writhes a curious creature. Long, rubbery arms spill over the sides of the chair and brush the floor, connecting to a torso covered in dirty green scales. Huge black eyes protrude over a drooping, sharp-toothed mouth that appears to close on only one side. The creature squints against the light from the torchlit hallway, shouting, "Shut it! Shut the blasted door!"

"Pathfinders," Shevala says with exasperation, "may I present Marw."

Knowledge(dungeoneering):
the bizarre creature in the chair is a horrifically mutated choker

"He suffers the effects of chronic exposure to strange technological fluids, sustained during his life in the Red Redoubt," the Venture Captain explains the creature's appearance. "These include dramatic mutations such as light blindness, scaly skin, and greatly enhanced mental faculties, which allows him to parlay with us. Marw is a guest of the Society as part of a deal we made to secure safe passage through his home, the Scrap Heap, toward a yet more dangerous level—the Forge."

"The Scrap Heap is no stranger to scavengers, but Marw tells that over the past few years, raiding parties from the Forge have launched a number of purposeful attacks against it, sometimes dragging entire robot skeletons back with them. Marw saw an opportunity when our agents arrived, and agreed to provide information on the redoubt in return for a promise that the Society would investigate and end the incursions from the Forge if at all possible."

Shevala keeps a small pause, letting the information to sink in, before proceeding to his actual request. "I need you to find out what’s going on within the Forge; if something is providing power to Karamoss’s robot foundries, it’s imperative that you deactivate that power source to prevent history from repeating itself. Of course, Marw here would also like us to ensure that whatever is scavenging in the Scrap Heap and endangering his people ceases to do so. Finally, please keep an eye out for anything of academic significance. The entire tower is a trove of historical data from one of the most fascinating periods in Absalom’s history! Bring me anything interesting that you can carry, and secure everything else so that future expeditions can study the artifacts in relative safety."

You can ask questions from the Venture Captain or Marw

"Indeed," Ibid agrees with Cyrus, regarding the genesis of Marw, though now the creature appears to be something much greater than a choker.

The old man crouches close to the creature, inclining his head slightly to bring him into full view. His mind is racing and his intrigue is piqued. "You are incredible..." he mutters to himself, not caring how awkward it might sound to the others. Ibid is fascinated with the creature, wishing he could spend days speaking with it, and more importantly, learning from it.

But the old man knows there isn't time at the present.

"For those of you who ventured into the Red Redoubt before, did you enter the Scrap Heap? I am interested, as Cyrus pointed out, to know if there are others there similar to yourself, Marw. I would love to speak with them for an extended period, if we could find the time."

"I would love to know anything more about both the Scrap Heap and the Forges," Ibid thinks aloud, writing a few notes. "For instance, what is the lay of the land in these places? What hazard might we see. And, who, or what, can we expect to find in our path within the Forges?"

"But most importantly," Ibid says, turning to address Marw fully. "We will do anything, and everything, in our power to help protect your people."

Miro thinks for a few moments, then shakes his head. "I would hazard to say that we did not delve that far into the structure, Ibid. I think I would have recalled meeting such fine inhabitants." He smiles at the cloaker thing before continuing, turning to address the creature.

"Are the things attacking from the forge machine or flesh? What forms of attacks do they use? Is it hot down there? Cold? Toxic? We would like to be fully prepared, you understand." Knowing he just mirrored Ibid's questions, the Halfling thought it important enough to reiterate.

"Others, like me, yes" Marw croaks, it's deep eyes darting from one Pathfinder to other. "I lead you. They no harm you, help you get to Forge. Ones coming from Forge, I don't know what they are. They well armed, still."

Shevala stands next to the choker, nodding as the creature speaks. "Yes, Marw's people have promised to help us. It is in their best interest to help us. I've discussed with him about the creature coming from the Forge, and from his descriptions I suspect that automatons from below have reactivated and are coming up to salvage whatever important components they can find.”

”As for what to expect down there,” the Venture Captain begins in answer to Miro’s question. ”All we have are guesses. The level is referred to in other documents as the Forge. Assuming a literal interpretation, forges are hot, so prepare to deal with high temperatures. Beyond that, I’d be ready to confront some newly minted mechanical soldiers if those foundries are indeed active.”

"Fighting mechanical soldiers sounds interesting. Cyrus clears his throat, obviously uncomfortable from the awkward exchange just now.

"resist energy scrolls may be in order, the heat from that last cavern was like an oven, much to hot for just endure elements, so best to have both. "

I'll get some scrolls of resist energy. Question, since I am using the scroll with my umd skill, could I buy the ranger version of the spell, which is level 1? Edit: I am a dufus... I already had one. Picked up a second one - I am confident I purchased the first one at the level 2 - 150 gp cost. I will do the same with the second. Should cover me for fire and electricity, which would be the two I would guess we would see.

During the evening they make their requests from Society vaults and scout their regular suppliers for suitable equipment. The excitement of what is to come makes some to sleep restless, dreaming of mechanical men marching rising up from fires of a forge. Marw is waiting for the in the morning, and once the adventurers are ready, starts leading them towards the Red Redoubt.

---

For once there is no sea travel involved, and barely any travel at all. After a few hours of walk they start noticing here and there pieces of metal, glass, and stranger substances - broken, bent or otherwise destroyed. Ibid sprints to study these eagerly, but very soon comes to a conclusion that all this is just useless junk. As the walk there is more and more of this junk, and soon junk pile rises as high as a mountain. Marw leads them on, wobbling with his stubby legs, until the junk rises so high it forms an impassable wall. "Welcome to home!" he croaks, and makes a loud screeching noise. A similar noise is heard from the top of the junk heap, and the Pathfinders notice figures moving there. Soon, a wire-supported platform starts to descend, and once it touches ground, Marw hops onboard. "Come, come! We must go up" the choker motions. Somewhat reluctantly, the adventurers step in to the makeshift elevator, whispering a short prayer to whatever god each believes in.

The elevator ride is luckily uneventful, and the Pathfinders find a group of Marw's kindred waiting to greet them. The mutant chokers start leading them through the technological junkyard. It impossible to say whether there is something of value among the tons of junk. Must be, if the stories about the raiders from the Forge are true. "We only look for food and shelter. Do not know of this tec-noo-loogy" the chokers tell them. The mutants lead the party to a pair of gigantic skymetal doors, labeled "Forge—Power Control Waste." "This is where we leave you. Good luck in Forge" Marw says. The other chokers stand farther, clearly afraid of this place.

Knowledge (engineering) DC 15:

Metal is called djezeteel—an alloy of Karamoss’s invention composed of iron and the magic-enhancing skymetal djezet.

There is a small panel at the frame of the door. Miro and Finarin remember encountering these earlier, and remember that by pressing this panel the door opens, revealing a small, circular chamber with another panel at the back. The Pathfinders step in and the door hisses ominously and closes soon after. Everyone except Cyrus feels the magic emenating from the walls, enhancing their spellcasting. +2 circumstance bonus on all caster level and concentration checks Pressing the panel at the back makes the chamber produce a hissing sounds, and suddenly everyone feels a lurch in their stomach. After a few long seconds, the elevator comes to a halt, and the door opens to a new space. This trapezoidal chamber displays signs of recent vandalism. Battered red panels hang from single bolts, revealing exposed wires and structural supports. Glowing tubes flicker behind smashed translucent panes on the upper walls that intermittently emit showers of sparks. Opposite the elevator to the north, a set of thick double doors stands in the room’s shortest side. Oddest thing in the room, however, is a multi-legged creature hanging upside down from the ceiling. The creature hangs passively in front of the southern door, turning its head towards the party when the elevator door opens. (picture)

"Hello. Are you designated as maintenance units? Maintenance request—please assist. Open Forge power core access doors." it says in a cold, calm voice.

I think investigators get to make untrained knowledge checks also after a certain level (and it would probably cost an inspiration point to get the +1d6 since he's not trained in it).

I'm totally fine with the pace. I skip those kind of bits all the time! Works well.

"That is one freaky creature," says Lort, warily drawing his greatsword and monitoring it for a reaction, "Any idea what it is or what it wants? I understood 'open' and 'doors'. Actually, I heard a 'please' in there as well. It seems polite enough, should we get these doors open? I picked this up in the Red Redoubt stockpile, Cyrus, could it be of use to you?"

Lort passes the rogue his brown e-pick. "Let's just make sure these doors are indeed sealed off and this thing isn't malfunctioning or something." Lort gives the southern doors a good tug followed by a good push.

Walking into the Red Redoubt brings back memories of his first excursion into the strange tunnels. So much has happened between then and now, so much. He never though that he would return.

Sullen and silent, he follows his companions and the mutated guide. Crossing the scrap heap, his face darkens.

After the short ride in the makeshift lift, he emerges into a room beyond his recognition.

Oh how I hate this, what I do not understand

He hears Miro always cheery voice, and sees Ibid studying the foreign materials, Lort and Faustus working on a door, hears the cheery greeting from Cyrus, and some strange being dangling from the ceiling.

Then it hits him, the magical ebb and flow of the room.

Sweet Nethys, what is this?

He can feel the magic pulsing around him, filling him with an arcane heartbeat.

Come, let us find this forge. Let these things feel what I can do

Lort and Faustus combine their strength and prove that flesh is stronger than djezeteel - the shoulderwork manages to open the door enough for creatures of their own size to squeeze through the gap. From the gap they can see there is a large pile of scrap on the other side, preventing the door to open any further.

Meanwhile the creature in the ceiling reacts to Cyrus' question. "I am director unit Tig-0. My primary designation is oversight of Forge power control systems in service of Lord Karamoss."

Ibid didn't roll for the monster lore, so here goes

The walking encyclopaedia keeps up to reputation, and recognizes this creature as a variant director robot. You get three questions, if you want. The old man can see the robot is severely damaged, it's chassis is heavily scorched, joints are slightly bent, and it's 'eye' is hanging out of its socket. The director robot is too big to fit through the gap Lort managed to open, and turns its head between the door and the Pathfinders.

“Request priority 1;" Tig-0 says, switching to a more clipped speech patter than before. "override all previous designations. New designation: return with director unit Tig-0 to Forge power control station. Complication: main access route malfunction—please assist. Immediate objective: clear access route. Confirm new designation?”

The road is open for you, but not for Tig-0. You can move onwards, or stay and clear the path for the robot.

"Well, we were trying to clear this for this fellow - Tig-0 is it? - I say we finish the job," Lort smiles and starts hefting boxes out of the way. As he does so, he is struck by a sudden inspiration, "New designation confirmed! Clearing access route!"

Ha! That was so weird speaking like that.

There is also a pair of bracelets, but the purpose of those is left unclear.

The director robot squeezes through the enlarged gap and starts walking along the hallway that continues on the other side. The hallway is 15 feet wide and as much in height, and illuminated by panels running along the tops of the wall. Soon the hallway starts to slope gently downwards in a series of switchback staircases. After a couple of turns, there is a sharply descending tunnel dug into the wall, which does not seem to belong to the original architecture. Tig-0 seems to ignore this, and just continue along the staircases. Pathfinders who investigate going down the tunnel notice it leads to similar hallway with sloping hallway, with the sound of Tig-0's walking coming now from the left. Obviously someone has dug a shortcut here, and this continues to descend on the opposite side of the hallway. The hallway leads to a lift, similar to the one bringing the party down from Scrap Heap.

It take you roughly 1.5 minutes to reach the elevator if you take the shortcut. Tig-0 is persistent on taking the official route, and will arrive to the elevator slightly after you (+0.5 minutes). You can try to persuade it to the shortcut tunnel if you're in a hurry

"I'm not usually one to be cautious," begins Lort, seeming almost confused by his statement, "But if someone has gone to all this effort to make a shortcut, then surely the other path is unsuitable for some reason. Assuming we need Tig-0's help, we shouldn't let him take the other path. Kurgess knows how long it has been since he's actually been down here, since that scrap-heap blocked his way while allowing smaller creatures in... or what has happened in the meantime."

Lort pauses for a moment, seeming to squeeze some more thoughts out of his skull, "Personally I'd love to find out what's down the regular way and why this shortcut was made, but perhaps later after our primary mission. That said, if we can't convince Tig-0 to take the shortcut, we should follow him to make sure he stays safe."

I have nothing even approximating a decent diplomacy or bluff check, and I don't think intimidate is particularly appropriate in this situation. But let's try to convince Tig-0 to follow us down the shortcut.

Ibid remembers hearing something of such robots; like other constructs they are immune to spells and tricks that try to affect the mind. And any effect with fort save Also like other constructs, they are very hard to damage with weapons, unless they are made of adamantine hardness 10. The Pathfinders and the robot meet at the elevator, and step in. Once more the surrounding hums and only the strange feeling in their stomach tells the elevator is moving.
