"Where do ya drop off the citizens ? Maybe we can ambush whoever picks 'em up?"

I'm for the death penalty I am afraid. He turned over his fellow citizens ALIVE to be converted to the undead. Left alive he too may be converted. Its a merciful punishment and for this sort of betrayal of his fellow men, nay LEADING the betrayal of his fellow men AND plotting treason against Duke Stefan, there is only one fitting punishment - it is not evil, it is simply the imposition of high law. We've been tasked to root out evil and so we shall. The younger guard? We can offer what ever form of mercy he desires - he was not leading this scheme.

When it comes to the Captain here? His fellow guards are likely as corrupt as he. I tried to report this crime and the goblins to the Lord Mayor and the guards had no concern for the crime, my reporting them to the Lord Mayor and even tried to intimidate me, hinting that there would be danger while we slept. Finally, his price of confession was death. He fufilled his side of the bargain.

I just need all he can tell us about the thieves guild and robberies in town - we can cut many heads from this Hydra of woes.

Clearly alarmed by the suggestion that he might not be killed after all, the captain desperately tries to answer every question. Turning to Thyra, he says, "There's a cave up north, and a little bit east. It's a wolves' den. Some of 'em talk like people, and they work for VK, same as me. The leader—er, 'alpha'—is named Collum. I'd go there to drop off prisoners and pick up my pay."

When Halsere asks about a thieves' guild, the captain says, "I'm pretty sure a guild exists, but we don't have any real connection to them. They're runnin' a bit wild lately, but that's mostly 'cause it's easier to arrest normal people than skilled criminals, and lately I've been tryin' to impress VK with sheer numbers so as to get on his good side. Skilled thieves take some work to track down and arrest, you see."

As Thyra and Halsere continue their discussion and mention being threatened and needing help, the captain volunteers some information: "Ya know, we haven't been able to touch the Order of the Griffon, so they could probably shelter you tonight if need be. And..." he hesitates sheepishly, "If you're not willin' ta kill me like you promised, I might be safe with them too."

Ahhh, says Halsere somewhat disappointed. Make up your mind Captain... Order of the Griffin or death. Can't be having you in two minds. Your surviving guard on the other hand is free to come to the order. Now, these goblins speak Common or is it that you speak Goblin?

Nodding at Pietro's suggestion, "We should check it out before these vamp suckers learn we've learned of 'em." With that Thyra turns toward Halsere "However disrupting the Thieve's Guild is important. Can't let such a lawless band prey on the citizens of Redlabb Keep,"

Finally Thyra walks over to the guard and guard captain "Can ya walk to the Griffon house or do ya need me to carry ya? I can't get both of ya."

Ironically, the captain is completely uninjured; he dropped at that last sleep spell before anyone attacked him. ;)

A short walk through the twilit streets of Radlebb Keep lands you in the foyer of the Hall of the Griffon. There, you're met by four people (a male dwarf, two female elves, and a male human), all wearing dark-green cloaks that conceal their bodies, though their hoods are down, revealing friendly but serious faces.

You explain your situation, and are asked to wait there as one of the elves leaves the room. She returns in a few minutes (flanked by more green-cloaked persons), and addresses the group. "The order knows of you and your objective, and is interested in helping. All of you," she gestures to all seven of you, "Will be sheltered for the night. The captain, the guard, and the goblin will have their cases heard tomorrow, and their fates decided thereafter." She nods to two of the cloaked figures who accompanied her into the room, and they escort your prisoners out of sight.

The speaker then addresses the four of you. "We have additional information relating to the things you've mentioned. One of the leaders will see you now."

You are ushered out of the entryway, down a long hall, and into what looks like some sort of conference room. The fireplace is unlit (most likely due to today's heat), and light is instead provided by a few wall-mounted sources of magical illumination. The dominating feature of the room is a long table, at the head of which sits yet another green-cloaked figure, this one a human woman. You are offered seats, and then your escorts leave the room so that you may speak with this woman in private.

"Welcome," she says, spreading her arms in a receptive gesture that reveals the full plate armor beneath her cloak. "I understand that you have been hired by Lord Korrigan to investigate the so-called 'rumors' of monsters in hopes of quieting the town, and have instead discovered quite a bit of trouble. I was particularly intrigued by your story about the wolf den."

The woman stands and begins pacing as she speaks. "As it happens, the Order already knows things that you've only begun to learn. There are larger things at work in this country, and you are beginning to be drawn into the web. It is admirable that you wish to strike against the wolves' den."

She pauses, seemingly for no other reason than to smile at your noble courage. "Unfortunately, the wolves are but one arm of the enemy, and killing a few wolves will accomplish little. However, the den is important for another reason. Their leader, Collum, has been tasked by his own employer with guarding a certain object. Should this object be obtained, it could be instrumental in making real progress to end the underlying threat."

The woman sits again, and looks at you intently. "I can't tell you much more without knowing that you can be trusted. However, if you were to venture to the wolves' den, find an artifact called the Staff of Life, and return it here; then we could consider you allies and share more information about the true situation. Then you could really make a difference, both for Radlebb Keep, and for the entire land. Will you accept this mission?"

Thyra's sleep is filled with proud remembrance stories of her favorite Dwarven heroes fighting the forces of darkness.

Her glory places her one day in their ranks. As she awakens she understands this dream is becoming a reality as she fathoms the new depths to her power.

With that Thyra dons some clothes, leaving her armor, shield and battleaxe behind. Strapping her handaxe to her belt she sets out looking for breakfast at the lodge.

Hope they have some blood sausages. . .

The night passes uneventfully, and you all awake fully refreshed. Long rest successful.

You are escorted to the same room in which you discussed your plans with the armored woman last night. She is there once again, but this time accompanied by a table full of food, and a human man in light armor who does not have one of the green cloaks that everyone else you've seen here has been wearing.

The woman speaks. "Good morning, brave adventurers. Help yourselves to some breakfast."

She then gestures to the man next to her. "With me this morning is Mirrel. He too hopes to become an ally of the Order, and is eager to prove himself on a mission. If it's alright with you, we'll kill two birds with one stone and have him join you on your quest to retrieve the Staff of Life from the wolves' den."

Feel free to ask any other questions you might have, make introductions, and so forth. She can also provide you with a map, which shows that the trek to the wolves' den is several miles, so you'll want to get tents or something; this isn't gonna be a day trip.

I'm glad to join you. I was getting worried the Order were going to send me off on my own.

GM rolls:

1d100 ⇒ 17

After a quick stop at the armory and supply store, you set out into the wilderness outside of Radlebb Keep. The weather has thankfully cooled off quite a bit, with a good bit of cloud cover scattered across the sky.

You spend a day traveling, occasionally running into an orc marauder or a group of wandering skeletons, but nothing that gives you too much trouble. You spend a night camping under the open sky, and in the morning discover that the cloudy reprieve was short-lived: once again the sun blazes hot in the sky, and you're already sweating by the time you've finished breakfast and re-embarked.

The first half of the day passes uneventfully, and not too long after lunch, the cave that you've been told is the wolves' den comes into view.

As you approach, three big wolves come out to meet you, and one of them speaks:

"What's the password?"
