GM Jen's A Time of Turmoil: There Be Witches in the Highlands (Inactive)

Game Master Retech

The death of both kings in the British isles by the hand of their own families have left the island fractious. With the nobility rended, adventurers may become nobility themselves, if they survive...

Excellent. In that case, let me take this time to flesh out the character a bit more:

Background:

Braiden Antwan was born to a pair of peasants, and such was the lot of his own life. He lived in the city for most of his life, taking his father's meager profession as a wheel maker and making a pittance. However, his whole existence was changed in the course of a night. In his dreams, he saw glimpses of three evil hags, of bloody murder and treachery, and finally, a maddening glimpse of the very city he lived in being consumed by flames, with the dying all around and chaos everywhere. He awoke drenched in sweat, screaming hoarsely. He found his vision was inexplicably clouded, and he also felt a new and terrible power inside him.

Since that night, he hasn't gotten a good night's sleep, every night being awakened by horrible views of death and despair. Sometimes in the day he also gets visions, though they seem to be of a much less horrible nature than his nightly terrors. These other visions give him images of the near future, though not always having anything to do with him. The emotional strain these visions have caused Braiden have pushed him to the edge of sanity. He has given up his profession, now preaching of the death he sees every night to the people passing on the streets. He barely scrounges enough to get by, yet knows he can't go back to the simple existence he once had.

Braiden has also discovered that, beside the visions, he has a new sort of power, though it is of a terrible sort. He can visit the visions that torment him onto others, only in starker and more terrifying clarity. He can also impose the awful feelings of dread and despair to others. He discovered these powers quite accidentally, and it is for a terrible vision he accidentally sent an important merchant that he now stands trial, being accused of witchcraft.

Personality:

Braiden is gruff, bleak, and on the brink of insanity. If it weren't for his strong personal will, he would have been reduced to lunacy, though some who meet him insist that he hasn't missed that mark at all. He talks in a somber way, usually trying his best to maintain whatever composure he can muster. It is a difficult task for him, however, and one which he fails at frequently, sometimes ending conversations with insane mutterings or, in extreme cases, laughter or screaming. His attitude is usually one of defeat, of a man who knows that the end is near and doesn't care about much in light of it.

Combat:
Braiden has learned that his newfound powers can be used to great effect on any enemies he might face. He can cause them to flee in fear, become sick to their stomach with the intensity of their terror, or become temporarily insane. He can also use the weight of the sheer horror to harm people physically, though this requires him to form a stronger link between minds by touching them.

He'll be focused on debuffing and making people go crazy.

So, questions/comments are appreciated.

One question from me, what is the name of the city we are starting in?
And one comment from me, I think my reason for seeing the king is kinda weak. If someone has a better idea, I'm all ears.

Shane - perhaps Braiden foretold the fall of the twin kingdoms and ascension of the current monarch. Interesting that a mad prophet's ravings seem to have been proven true the newly crowned has you brought before him to see what else you might portend....

Aha, brilliant idea, I like it!

So, instead of being in jail and accused of witchcraft:

Braiden's delirious speeches about the fall of the two kingdoms have come true, and talk has spread wide about his ravings, which are seeming less crazed to some. Hearing that the mad prophet successfully predicted this outcome, and even predicted some queer specifics about the whole affair (including the three witches and the slaughter at the Macduff castle), the new monarch decided to call on the man in order to hear his prophesies concerning the future.

Liberty's Edge

This sounds awesome! Any chance I could sneak a duelist type character in there? A fencer, I guess, rapier and all?

I wants in. :)
I wish to be a hobgoblin inquisitor. I plan to take one level of rogue, and then spend the rest in Inquisitor.

Basic background
My character grew up poor and mostly one his own which is how he picked up the rogue class. One day as he he tried to rob someone he was apprehended. After being given a good "talking to" about the value of making an honest living the man actually gave him the money he was going to steal, but he(my character) was intrigued so he started to ask questions as to why he is not in jail instead. This lead to a very long philosophical and religious conversation, which in turn led to them talking at about the same time everyday. Eventually the money ran out, and he ask the man(I have no name yet) to help him procure a job. The man was more than happy to help the rogue find a job as a janitor at a local church. During this time he met a local youth, about the same age who was very religious, and was working to become a clergyman eventually.

As they spend time together my character picked up on the religious doctrine, and wanted to be more active in the church. Being a commoner, nobody wanted to take him seriously. As a prank he was told that if he could do something impressive to show the god(s) favored him he would be given a chance. Every year in a city nearby there was a local pugilist tournament. He entered using sneak attack to end many fights quickly, but he did not win. He did do well enough that one of his opponents recommended he get some real martial training, and become a soldier. My character explained that he really just wanted to serve the church. The man who had gotten him into the church and his friend who was almost now a priest put in a good word for him. They explained that there were many evils, and that maybe his talents were the best thing he could do. They also told him that staying at the village would not get him anywhere, and the tournament idea was just cruel joke. With nowhere else to go he joined the city militia. He did well enough that he was selected to travel with a soldier/courier to deliver a message to the king. Part of his instructions were that if something were to happen to the courier he would have to deliver the package, and he was not to open it. About 10 miles outside the city they were ambushed. Everyone except for my character and another person were killed. They now hope to deliver the package in time.

PS:I will leave the contents of the package up to you, and the identity of my mystery partner also.

Playing a ranger is also an option.

A pugilist who was trained as a figher also not a bad idea.

Oracle also works if we have no healing type. I am leaning towards Lore or Battle Oracle which would allow a lot less rewriting to get in.

Since you seemed to like Dougal and I had some time on my hands, I did up a more complete sheet. Stats are expanded, background is cleaned up, and I added a description. It's all in the profile now.

Are we using the PF deities?

My character's personality for now.
Even though he is trying to do the right thing for all the wrongs he has done, he is still a man of the streets, and will do what he has to do. He wants to make the world a better place so less people have to commit crimes to live. He may have to bust a few heads to make it happen, but he does it with the hope that it will pay off.

Many inquisitor types are out to get those scheming against the church. My guy is more supportive of the world than any religion, but he also knows the power the church can have in making things right, and bringing hope to people.

To Swagger and Wandslinger:

Both excellent choices to fit with the party. At this point, I have plenty of good players that fill all the roles (and make some interesting combinations), so I am closing recruitment. And yes, PF deities, kinda. All the PF deities are just "aspects" of one god.

I'll post up the groups tonight.

---

Ahh heck, here they are:

Scotland

Razo (Inquisitor)
Joy (Sorcerer)
Alain (Rogue (Rake))
Mal (Fighter)
Wandslinger (Duelist Fella)
(And Llaelan rounding it out with an oracle or cleric, I think)

England

Swagger (Rogue > Inquisitor)
Mark (Bard)
Shane (Oracle)
Poor (Ronin)
Gyle (Rogue)
Douglas Chalk (Monk)

---

For those that don't have fully completed profiles, please make them and head over to the game thread. The Scotland one will be a part of this campaign and a separate thread is being made for the English campaign. I'll leave today and tomorrow for the introductions. It won't be as cliche as a tavern, I promise.

"The die is cast and rolling. Shall it portend weal or woe...."

This will be Mark's Bard - I'll clean up the profile and update tonight

http://paizo.com/paizo/messageboards/community/campaigns/playByPost/gMJensA TimeOfTurmoilAndThereBeWitchesInTheHills&page=1#1

That's the England thread. Scotland one is right in the gameplay tab of this one. Good luck!

Jen - not sure if it's been answered yet - but what is the starting gold?

It would be great if the two campaigns can share a discussion thread as well :)

And this is why I should check Recruitment more often. As someone whose bloodline is Orcadian, I was thinking of submitting a character based on the inhabitants of Orkney at the time which would have been Norsemen who had intermingled with the indigenous population. Almost certainly a Barbarian to represent the fighting culture but with more varied statistics to show the fact that these men weren't always just about the fight.

I'll still submit the character but happy to go on the waiting list given you've chosen the groups.

The link you provided didn't seem to work, though I found it through your profile.

First Thnaks for selecting Hywel, this should be fun.

Second I went with Cavalier: Order of the Dragon. The Ronin is mechanically superior but the group oriented nature of the Dragon Cavalier wins out over the lone wolf Ronin

Third. I will not be able to get everything finalized until tonight. So I may be 'fashionably late' to the ooc and ic threads.

Again thank you.

The starting gold is max.

Jen the GM wrote:
I forgot to add this in the first post, but it's maximum starting wealth. Try to incorporate some items that might not find use in a regular campaign, like a person of your stature might have, because there will be ample oppertunity during the campaign to get weapons of war and such.

This is Mr.Swagger signing in with his character. I still have some tweaks to make, but it is 100% playable.

Liberty's Edge

Thanks for tossing me in! Hmm, what race do you think the french are? Thinking of either a free hand fighter going into duelist. The character himself i'm thinking of a disowned noble's son looking to make his own name in the world.

Another question I was thinking on: how do we represent languages? I assume english is common, but what is french, or spanish, or german?

I would think elves would represent the french.

linkified for convenience

To Wandslinger:

I would say that English and Scottish is common, French is elven (actually, it might be called Sylvan), German could be dwarvish, and Gnomish for the Spanish? I don't think anyone will actually meet a Spaniard though.

I will soon be giving free traits though based on certain things, so watch for that. What I might do is that everyone speaks English, but if you can talk to them in their native tongue, they will generally be more receptive.

Okay, I've taken a long time to answer and bring up a character, but I've pondered a few different thoughts from alchimist, to oracle and in the end, if you agree, I'd like to play a pict druid, send by the last druid circles to remind the new king of his duties to the people of the north, despite his fight against the MacBeth, mormaer of Moray.

Here is the character background:

Born on the slopes of An Càrn Gorm, Drest MacAlpin, was the fifth son of a Alpin MacCinoid, a shepherd of Moray (Macbeth "dukedom"). As Moray used to be located in one of the last Pict kingdoms, the pictish tradition was strong in the remote villages, despite the general conversion to christianism. As illness and poverty killed most of his older brothers, Drest had to take care of the sheep alone at the age of 7. The shepherd life agreed to him as he had a way with the animals and was always safe outdoors. As he grew, Drest realized he could calm animals with a touch and perform a variety of strange tricks. His reputation was such that one day, a woman, strangely tattooed and carrying an eagle on her shoulder cam to see him. she told him of the long tradition of the picts druids, of their communion to nature and of the power that could be unlocked to protect their people. Guided by Boalia, Drest left his familly and began his apprenticeship. Contrary to her, his powers were not only on the animals but also on the winds and rains.
When Macbeth was eventually killed by Malcolm, son of Duncan, Drest has just completed his studies and had just settled back in his village, to help his kin. However, with the death of MacBeth, the people of Moray were afraid they were going to be the target of Malcolm ire. Drest was thus charged by his people and his fellow druids to carry a message to the new king, reminding him of his duty to all his people and that they had not contributed to his father death.

If you agree with the character, a druid with the weather domain, I'll put up the character sheet and enter the game by tomorrow.

To Llaelian:

Perfect! I was secretly hoping that you'd choose a druid, for a reason that you'll see later.

Good, I'll do the character alias and sheet tomorrow (It's almost 2 am where I live as I am on GMT +1)

The background story has been slightly edited. It is my profile now.
