Yanistah "Yani" Stands-Tall |
Can Yanistah do part of the work (let's say until the heat recedes) and then leave it to the NPCs to perfect the job once the conditions are more ideal? On that note, would Jask Derindi be friendly enough to heal some of the non-lethal damage she would incur? That way we might resume our exploration early in the afternoon, and Eizzach and Xabala would have some time to complete their extracts.
Yanistah "Yani" Stands-Tall |
That too. As a second option, we might consider calling it a day and fast-forwarding towards the next. Mostly since I figure that following the trail might be a potentially time-consuming task, depending on how far they made it, and having as early a start as possible could prove beneficial. Unless we're planning on spending the night away from the camp, that is.
Xabala Kybwa'ka |
Xabala nods at Vazio and Eizzach's words. "Indeed. In my tribe, the hunters tell their charges that they must follow their target at the earliest opportunity. Time, weather, even other creatures, may obscure the path."
Yanistah "Yani" Stands-Tall |
"I bow to your wisdom, Lady Xabala. As soon as the heat recedes, I'll be more than happy to lead you to where their trail starts. I only hope the darkness won't force us to fall back to camp as we're still following it".
It looks like we are decided. Yani will work until the hottest hours are behind them, then she will lead the group to Kovack's former camp and to where his trail leads

Yanistah works, getting about half the camp set up before the day's heat abates. She nearly exhausts herself but Jask helps to wash away the fatigue before she leaves. Be careful, he admonishes, I don't like needing to use my curing spells because of what they indicate to have happened.
The group travels on, moving down the cliff's side towards the camp. Once there she picks up the trail again and begins to follow.
Survival check with your next post to continue following the trail please.
Yanistah "Yani" Stands-Tall |
"I'm sorry to have Nethys' blessings invoked for such a trivial ailment. I wouldn't have come to that if it weren't for the urgency to pick up Captain Kovack's trail after a whole day of neglecting it" Yani penitently says to the former prisoner.
Once they've reached the beach where the captain and the scholar appear to have made their landing, she starts looking for where their tracks would eventually lead.

Eizzach Bitterbalm |
As the group moves onward, Eizzach shades his eyes from the sun's glare with on hand as he tries to keep a lookout for anything suspicious.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20 -2 to sight-based checks due to Oblivious.
GM Jammin' |
Yanistah catches the trail quickly and follows it to the south west. For three hours, you follow the tracks, the broken branches and trodden undergrowth. You cross two rivers and finally come to a cliff. It is getting on late, around 6 pm.
If you wish to make it back to camp before dark, it is best to leave now.
Yanistah "Yani" Stands-Tall |
Watching the sun slowly but steadily approaching the horizon, Yanistah stops in her tracks and turns to face the rest of the group. "If we want to be back at the camp before nightfall, now is the right time to backtrack."
And yet, we're not even out of the northern peninsula; and we still have no clue as to where the captain was headed...
She appears lost in thought for a moment, the she continues. "However, the track might already be cold, and I'm loath to have it grow even colder. I say we press on. Xabala's right when she says trails must be pursued at the earliest opportunity - moreover, this island is big: we're bound to spend a night in the jungle sooner or later if we want to eventually find that lighthouse".
Vazio Tanzer |
I agree. A night in the jungle is unavoidable at some point, and the captain already has a head start. The further he gets ahead of us, the greater the chance we will lose him.
Nichelle Crassior |
The rest was wonderful. Nichelle woke up a couple of hours later, more surprised by the quietness of the camp. As she yawned and stretched, she realized that the others were gone, and she turned to give puppy dog eyes to Sasha. "Awwww... They left again and didn't tell meeee.." she even sniffled a bit for effect. There had to be something to do, since boredom and her were things that did not go together at all.
Curious, she looked at the nearby trees and decided that she wanted to see if climbing to the top of one of them would give her any good vantage points to see if she could see anything. "Sasha, you think we might be able to see what kind of thing made that nest if we climbed a tree?"
Suiting action to deed, she did what she could to climb the nearest tree, an action that she discovered was pretty difficult if one did not know how. "Right! It can't be that hard!", she declared, attempting to climb another. Needless to say, that turned out about the same as the first attempt. "I was wrong.. It is that hard.. Or these trees don't like me.."

Xabala Kybwa'ka |
Xabala nods. "Agreed. There would be little point to return as we would not get much further down the trail on the morrow from there. To camp out nearby allows us to move further along this trail. Perhaps you can find us a suitable location for the night."
Yanistah "Yani" Stands-Tall |
Yanistah bows in acknowledgment of Xabala's words. "I thank you for your confidence, wise one. I will do my best" she says resuming her march.

Survival: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15 to find a fitting location to camp for the night once the sun sets.
GM Jammin' |
You travel down the cliff and almost sure west to the coast. As you move you can hear the sounds of the jungle and ocean around you. In the early dusk, the fading western sun glints off of something hard and smooth. A clacking noise is heard over the ocean waves. A large crab comes moving through the edge of sight and it sees you. The large creature starts pinching it's claws together menacingly.

I will have a map set up after work today. For now, it is 20' away from Yani--the head of the line. Marching by twos, you can assume to be 20 to 30 feet away.
Xabala Kybwa'ka |
Knowledge (nature): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
By the Elements! Xabala curses to herself as she recognizes the crab. The creature will be immune to my Hex... I shall have to be ready to assist the others where I can.
With nothing else, she pulls out her blowgun and launches a dart at the giant crab.
Just realized that vermin like the crab and eurypterids are immune to mind-affecting effects, like the Evil Eye Hex... :(

Yanistah "Yani" Stands-Tall |
As a rule clarification, can a creature make more than one attack (even if it's a natural one) after moving as a standard action? The Monster Manual seems fuzzy in that regard, but I stumbled upon this thread which I feel clarified things a bit.
"How's crab for dinner?" Yani says, retaliating against the crustacean menace.

Taking a sideways 5 ft. step to make room for whoever was behind me to attack (likely Lalaru or Malthu, if he's present). Going for a flurry of blows using Stunning Fist on my first Unarmed Attack.

Flurry of Blows: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22 Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Yanistah "Yani" Stands-Tall |
The only limitation should be that you must be able to move at least 10 ft. at double your speed. If a halfling in fullplate (whose speed is 15 ft./round just like Lalaru's) can do it, she shouldn't have any problem either, I reckon; though obviously GM Jammin' has the last word on it. Also, didn't you salvage a mw. rapier from the Jenivere? Sorry if I sound pedantic but I'd surely like to have that creature downed before it can perform another full attack on Yanistah ;)
Eizzach Bitterbalm |
A few seconds of fiddling with a catalyst and Eizzach sends a sparking bomb sailing over the body of the crab.
"FIRE IN THE HOLE!"
Since we're not fighting on a map this time, and Yanistah is already adjacent to the crab, I'm declaring that Eizzach targeted the map intersection that would catch the enemy in the splash damage without harming any allies. I have 4 bombs remaining after this.
The rules for targeting a grid intersection with a thrown splash weapon to deal splash damage can be found here.
Bomb attack roll: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17 vs. AC 5 for targeting a grid intersection.
Bomb splash damage (if hit): 5 fire damage to all four squares in the radius of the grid intersection.
Xabala Kybwa'ka |
Now that the crab was engaged with her allies, Xabala refrained from using her blowgun not that it would have helped much with its hard shell... not to mention the darts are not dosed.... Instead she waits in case her healing skills were needed.
Delay.
GM Jammin' |
I described it as large, meaning large for a crab. It is a medium creature, but I figured saying, "medium crab," would sound weird.
Vazio's magic strikes the creature, breaking its carapace. Eizzach's bomb lands near it burning its legs. Finally Lalaru steps forward, striking with her shortsword. It goes through the hard shell, striking at the meat of the creature. It then falls to the ground, twitching its legs slightly.
GM Jammin' |
There are still a few hours of light for tracking in the sky when this is over. You continue following the trail down the beach. Just as the sun touched the western horizon you come upon a ruined camp. Several small shelters made from driftwood exist in a circle, though all of them have collapsed. A rotting creature from which wet green vines have sprouted stands here, staring blankly into the ocean. It turns as you enter the clearing and charges at you.
Xabala: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

Eizzach Bitterbalm |
"Well, if life was easy, it wouldn't be as much fun!"
While moving to a secure position, Eizzach lobs another bomb at the creature, this one aimed dead center of its mass.
Throwing a bomb directly at the charging creature (range: 20 feet; 3 remaining for the day). Here are the combat rules for thrown splash weapons.
Bomb vs. enemy's touch AC: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Damage on a hit: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 Fire damage.
Splash damage for 5-foot-radius: 5 Fire damage.
Reflex vs. DC 14 saves for half damage.
Roll for miss result as per thrown splash weapon rules: 1d8 ⇒ 7

"Pounded, roasted and skewered - just how I like it! Good work guys" Yanistah compliments her companions.
Zombie encounter on Halloween? Gotta love those holiday episodes... ;)
Xabala Kybwa'ka |
Knowledge (?): 1d20 ⇒ 13
Knowledge arcana or history is +8, knowledge nature is +9. Of course this could be something not covered by that.
If she cannot figure it out, or if she figures it out and it can be affected by her Evil Eye Hex, then:
Xabala offers her accursed eye to the creature, assuming such a thing even has a mind to affect....
If it is not immune to mind-affecting effects: DC 14 or else take -2 on attack rolls for 7 rounds. 1 round on a save.
If she figures it out and it is immune, she may need to have more info before continuing.
GM Jammin' |
The creature shrieks as Eizzach's bomb catches it in the chest. Several vines drop to the ground still burning.
Xabala, Malthu and Lalaru.
Xabala Kybwa'ka |
"Yellow Musk!" Xabala cries out. "Be glad we have only met the 'zombie' and not the Creeper itself. It is a dangerous infection that infects a person and animates them into this creature! If you will strike with a weapon, a sharp blade is better than others. Otherwise, treat it as a dangerous plant."
I guess delay, then, until someone may get hurt, at which point she can use her Healing Hex on them.
GM Jammin' |
I guess I'll dmpc Lalaru and Malthu for now.
Lalaru charges forward, drawing her shortsword and swinging. She strikes the creature dead on, hurting her severely. The creature falls over and twitches violently unable to do anything.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Combat over.
Lalaru Thalassa |
Wow, my bad. Thought I posted after you mentioned the distance. Though I was going in and out of sleep at the time so it's equeally likely I wrote it and the forum timer ate it, or I imagined it. Once again my apologies.
As the creature collapses the merfolk's revulsion finally cones to a front as she frantically shakes her sword in order to clear the gore before pulling out one of the Varisian scarves in order to wipe it down.
Yanistah "Yani" Stands-Tall |
Before she could even react, Yanistah watches as her companions quickly dispatch the shambling abomination.
"A Creeper, you say, Lady Xabala? So there could be a creature spawning these... things... nearby? Whoever is standing watch tonight should be extra careful..."
She then turns her gaze to the west, first on the sea and then, squinting her eyes, on the sun rapidly falling over the horizon. "Speaking of which, the darkness is already almost upon us, I'm afraid. Without knowing precisely where this Creeper is, this might be as good a place to camp for the night as any, I reckon. If no one's having issues with it, I'm taking first watch as usual".
"And let's hope we have better luck than whoever built those shelters" she mutters, more to herself than to anyone else.
That said, she proceeds to perform a quick sweep of the surrounding area, looking for scavengeable goods as well as threats.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Yanistah "Yani" Stands-Tall |
"Oh... Sure". Salvaging a bit of wood from the decrepit shelters, Yanistah borrows a flint from Eizzach and promptly lights a fire, throwing the strange plant-like zombie on it.
On a second fire she instead cooks some pieces of crab meat she carved out of the giant crustacean they previously defeated. "Anyone fancies some dinner?"
Sorry, I meant to specify Yanistah harvesting some of the crab's meat just after that particular combat was over, but then another one started immediately after
