With the ambush prepared and the group split between those waiting in the wings of the camp and the pair buried in the brush outside, it was only a matter of waiting until sunrise.

Dawn comes slowly, as though the land itself can feel the foreboding moment looming over Happston and the Greenbelt itself. No matter how the matter was resolved today, Happston would be changed, and the instability of the Stolen Lands would be tested once more. Would justice prevail, for once, over the great many bandits that had claimed this wild land as their own?

The sound of a horse's hooves echo against the quiet of the morning as five riders break from the woods. The human leading them can be none other than Sneeg, a sly smile on his face as he sidles up towards the walls of the encampment and casts an eye towards the horizon, as though to measure the time. The others in his motely crew--another human, a pair of halflings on ponies, and an almost ethereal looking woman that could not have been entirely human--wait beside their leader, eyes scanning the land for danger.

"Wakey wakey, mister Happs!" shouts Sneeg, chuckling quietly to himself as he waits a moment for a response. When none comes immediately, he fills the void with more shouting. "We've come to collect, and I'm afraid your lovely Illana is just having such a rough time back at our camp. Aerin here wanted to make things easier for her with a well placed knife, but, well, I figured you'd want to say goodbye to her before we did anything like that. Fortunately we found another sap who was more than happy to keep patching her up for us! Some dumb bastard hiding out in the woods with only a lizard-man for company!" He laughs again, this time loudly and the sort you'd expect from a murderous kidnapping madman. "Time's a wasting, Happs."

Happs stomps up onto the watchtower, glaring down at the man who endangers everything he holds dear. "I've got your ransom, Sneeg. Unlike you, I still have a friend or two that can help me out. A merchant fellow who decided to... invest... in this transaction. He's holding your gold, and he's right over here. You two can meet at the gate, with no weapons, and make the exchange. I notice you didn't bring Illana..."

"Hah! Wouldn't you have liked that? Come, come, Happs--you taught me better than that! But have it your way. But my men will run your friend down if he fails to fulfill your end of the bargain."

Happs shakes his head, gritting his teeth and holding in a number of words he desperately wishes to say. Instead, he simply says, "I've assured him as much, and he believes that business will prevail even in these... trying times." He glances down at the group waiting inside the camp, and nods.

Showtime.

Male Aasimar Sorcerer 2

Tyanos made sure the ransom was well inside and far from the gate. It was on display but protected with enough small barriers and debris to make it hard to approach from horse or foot. Not pretty or effective for blocking an assault but it would slow down anyone or anything that could not fly. He meets Sneeg at the gate but keeps a good distance from him, watching for the slightest hostile intent or tell, behind his back hands folded one sleeve holds the alchemist fire hidden from sight. He holds up a hand to stop him from approaching closer.

Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20

"That's far enough gentleman. As your eyes can see we have your ransom yet you did not bring the goods to this exchange. It seems your going to have to come back with it, you can't expect to buy at market with empty pockets. How long will it take you to deliver in exchange for your coin?"

He keeps his voice friendly but business like none the less. Giving no provocation at the deal or it's terms. If Sneeg needed to leave to get his hostage it was more time but he would have to make sure that it could not be long enough for him to get reinforcements ether. If his hostage was near by then that would be just fine as things would remain intact. If Sneeg tried to rush or attack for the gold, things would go bad but not beyond what they expected. It all depended on his actions.

Kareta grips the tanglefoot bag tightly in her hand, trying to decide quickly whom to throw it at. The sorceress would be trouble, so she would be her primary target, but if he stuck Sneeg or his human companion, the others could take them down that much quicker.

Sneeg offers Tyanos a smile split by a pair of gaps and further marred by teeth as rotten as the man's soul. "Heh. While I do appreciate a good businessman, I think we all know I've been done with fair deals for a good long while. No, I think we hold the bigger bargaining chip in this matter, since your gold--should I say my gold?--don't bleed too good. Illana, though..." He made a slashing motion across his neck with a thumb. "We don't come back within a few hours, and my man finishes her off. And she weren't looking good when we started, even with the priest praying for her."

He took a deliberate step forward, ignoring Tyanos's warning. "The priest seemed fairly confident he had friends that would get involved, too--you, probably? Anyway, I figured I should bring something to let them know I wasn't joking." He turned to the human beside him, a brute of a man with a heavy greatsword over his shoulder. Wordlessly, he reaches down and pulls a matted sack from his saddlebag. With a toss, the bag rolls across the dawn-lit dirt and flops open.

Wetscale's bloodied stump of a head lay there, eyes glazed over with the endless darkness of death as the light of day glittered over their lifeless form.

Male Aasimar Sorcerer 2

Tyanos does not even flinch, it was not the first time someones head rolled before him. He spares a feeling of sadness for fallen Wetscale but nothing that shows. Sneeg could try to provoke him all day long, he would get nothing from him for it.

"No Illana no gold, it's that simple. Happs has kept his end, you have not. If Illana dies then not only will you not get your gold, you will have fully broken your oath. A most unwise thing to do in these lands. Now bring her or not, ether way you will not be getting so much as a copper pinch before. This was never a negotiation, it was a trade. Their is no bargaining, even if their was. I'm better then you."

He lets his strange stare bore into him for a moment before continuing. Cutting off any attempt at a response.

"Also if you disregard my warning a second time, their will not be a third. I do not trade with people who do not listen."

Whatever Sneeg was playing at, he had made to many mistakes. They had not expected the party or the ransom. Even if he spoke truthfully about Illana being killed should they fail to return. His arrogance made him careless, they did not cover their tracks. Backtracking their trail would not be hard. Likely the camp was with in a days ride, bandits don't stray far from reinforcements to act quickly upon unexpected trouble or large prizes. He knew that better then most, not to mention Sneeg brought his best. You don't leave heavy's to tend camp unless their wounded. He almost wanted Sneeg to try him, they could just be done with them and go retrieve Illana. Still he had to try for the best outcome if not the most effective in his opinion.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

Sneeg stared right back. The strange, airy figure beside him and the brute of a human rejoined the glare with a similar fury. The pair of halflings stuck to the back, their eyes searching for threats around them.

"And what? You would have me bring Illana here, only to watch as you turn on me and slaughter my men? I've made a life at this and plan to keep making one for many years to come."

For the first time, the woman beside him speaks. "Let the Stag decide the fate of the girl. The gift of Happs's little angel will surely put us in his good graces. He will undoubtedly enjoy some perverse sense of catharsis when he throttles the life from Happ's lover. We do not need some petty trader's gold. This land is already ours."

The bandit laughs, the bone-chilling cackle of the butcher he is. He pulls the reins of his horse, directing it back southward. "I am inclined to agree with my partner here. There's plenty of gold for the taking. And more than one way make a traitor squirm." His eyes settle on Happs, then he makes a rather rude and inappropriate gesture with his hands. The implications for Illana are not pleasant. "I'm sure you'll find us when you rethink your stubbornness."

The reformed bandit, to his credit, grits his teeth and remains impassive and waits for Tyanos's lead, but you can tell he's chomping at the bit to see Sneeg's head on a pike. Sneeg and his crew, however, start moving southward...

Male Aasimar Sorcerer 2

Tyanos shrugs and sigh's. In a flash he tosses a spell at Sneeg's group while shouting. Suddenly they find themselves covered in golden dust.

"Now!"

He had hoped to take Sneeg alive, give him the same chance as the other bandits. Then he had to open his mouth and his lackeys did as well. Now he just wanted to burn the lot of them. If they had any sense they would give up quickly, after Sneeg's words he was in a murderous mood.

"Happs have at them. You should have brought the lady and taken the gold little bandits."

He growled at them as he drew his crossbow.

Is there a map somewhere?

Hadin gets ready to cut the way out of the bandits

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

There is no map, but if people really want one I can make up a really terrible map for reference. Otherwise the general layout is a rough circle around them, trapping the bandits between those hiding outside and those that were waiting at the gate. The closest to the gate of Happston are Sneeg, the human with the greatsword, and the airy looking woman. The two halflings are spread out a bit more near the back, making them a lot harder to hit with AoE effects. The terrain is scrubby grassland and the light is dim, but enough to negate any low-light penalties. The trees that the bandits emerged from are a good hundred feet southeast of Happston's gate, and likely where they're trying to get to.

Sneeg turns, fury in his eye, just in time to catch a faceful of glimmering dust. His companions fare no better as a mist of blinding dust falls over them and their horses, who immediately begin to panic.

The scene is only made more chaotic as Dmitri and Kareta launch their attack. Though Kareta's tanglefoot bag catches her arm mid-throw and falls short, scattering its contents across the ground, Dmitri's thunderstone flies truer than an arrow. It cracks against the ground at the half-human's feet and explodes with the cacophony of a thunderstorm. The bandit and his entourage, however, seem unfazed by the noise--perhaps because they've already got their hands full with the blinding dust.

The greatsword-wielding one gives a great shout as he and his horse tumble blindly into the pit Thomas opens below him. The two other bandits, their horses staggering wildly, struggle to keep a handle on the situation. The woman, teeth grit and eyes unseeing, lashes out blindly towards Tyanos with an arc of electricity. The bolt sizzles and crackles through the air, but finds nothing more than the air. Sneeg, blinded but no fool, pulls himself down from his horse, draws a heavy axe from his belt, and puts the beast between himself and Tyanos--and stands dangerously close to the edge of a pit he cannot see.
Sneeg has cover against all attacks from the gate-side of the battle. (Though he's also sort of a bit flat-footed, given his blindness)

The two halflings also waste no time dismounting, ducking low and trying to use the rough grassland as cover against any attacks...
Due to their small size, low posture, and dim lighting, the halflings have partial concealment in the grasses.

He stops a little over a dozen feet from them, pulling a ebon-colored rod from the folds of his clothes, striking it against his forearm like a tindertwig, and heaving it through the air.

"Damn! I got the cover you wanted, boss! Whadda we do now!?"
Atk: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
The stick lands just beside Sneeg, bouncing only once before pluming with a great gray cloud of smoke.
Sneeg's response is cold, emotionless; as dark as his vision is with the blinding effects of the glitterdust and the added effect of a smokestick. "Kill them."
The smokestick grants partial concealment to creatures on 'your side' of the smoke and total concealment to those opposite you. Sneeg is on the ambusher's side; the sorceress is on the gate side.

Male Aasimar Sorcerer 2

Tyanos did not miss a thing. Sneeg was not a priority just now.

"Aim for the woman if you can. Otherwise work on the halflings."

Sneeg was blinded and a coward, until his sight returned he would be of little concern. The pit held the other man for now, he could be ignored for the moment and perhaps taken. The woman was a spellcaster clearly, he didn't need enemy spells mucking things up so she would have to go. While the halflings were spared the earlier assault. They could not be allowed to remain so.

Tyanos's alchemist's fire disappears into the smoke and explodes with the shattering of glass and a new burst of blackened smoke. The sound of panicked horses resounds across the battlefield as Sneeg's horse bolts, flames licking up its tail, off towards the open grassland. Though the woman's horse displays it own displeasure with its proximity to fire, she keeps a tight hold on the reins and keeps it in check.

Kareta leans out to launch her ambush, sending Eshie to charge into the fray as she opens fire on the halfling still visible. The arrow hits its mark, sinking deep into the short fellow's shoulder. He yelps in pain, turning to see a rather disgruntled dwarf charging out of Happston and into the smoking, burning, hole-filled center of the ambush. He plants his feet and launches the heavy head of his polehammer into the chest of the sorceress. Though it knocks the wind out of her--an excessive amount of wind for the size of the woman, Brycen notes--she clings to the horse with the skill of a master rider.

Hadin raises his shield and covers his charge up to the halfling by the rock. Though he wishes there was another way, he knew that the burgeoning community of Happston would never thrive--and worse, might revert to petty banditry--so long as Sneeg and his men threatened it. He raises his flail and swings, hoping to take the knife-throwing bandit out of the fight quickly.

He feels his feet slip out from under him as the ground rushes up to greet him in the face, leaving him flat out prone a dozen feet out from his target.

Round 2!

"What the hell is this thing!?" shouts the halfling hidden away behind Thomas's spell. There's the muffled sound of what sounds like banging against something, and then suddenly a fist appears through the wall followed by a whole halfling as he stumbles through it. He looks about, confused, when he notices the battle at the center of the ambush quickly growing more dire. He moves a little closer and with a flick of his wrist, sends the knife on his belt flying towards Brycen's head. Still slightly off-balance from his charge, the knife hits square in Brycen's shoulder and draws blood.

Brycen takes 5 damage!

Kareta whistles, prompting Eshie to switch targets. Quickly, he turns and rushes at the other halfling.

Sneeg rolls from behind the smoke cloud, barely visible on its edge. He levels a large crossbow at Tyanos's chest, cutting the gap between the growing chaos of the battlefield. "I admire your stones, but ambushing professionals just ain't smart." He fires, but the arrow flies just shy of striking true. Instead it takes a large chunk of Tyanos's shirt and sticks it to the gate of Happston, trapped between wood and the serrated iron quarrel.

With that he moves towards his own cover. They already had numbers on their side, they just needed to spread the gap.

Tyanos launches a crossbow bolt across the battlefield, scoring a solid hit on the standing halfling, but Kareta's shot from the complete other end of the fight goes slightly wide as the halfling writhes after the first shot.

Hadin directs his attention to Sneeg, now fully visible outside of the dwindling black smoke. He charges across the battlefield, avoiding the edge of the pit and the frantic horses to plant the business end of his flail directly into Sneeg's gut. The severe blow knocks the wind out of the man, but he keeps to his feet.

Brycen hauls himself around the bandits' horses, bringing his longhammer around in a great swinging arc as he moves. The weight of the hammer barely connects with the pale lady, but he can still hear the cracking of bone as something gives way beneath the fine dwarven craftsmanship. She shouts a flurry of expletives, then launches a great crackling storm of lightning out the still-unseen figure that struck her. The lightning arcs up the hammer and into Brycen's gauntleted hands...

Dmitri has informed me that he is, indeed, jumping into the pit. For glory!

Wasting no time after a fumbling first strike, Dmitri charge and leaps straight into the pit after the greatsword-wielding bandit.

Acro: 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 1 + 2 = 4 ;.;

The pit turns out to be a little more claustrophobic than Dmitri had imagined. His great blade cleaves into the warrior, cutting him from shoulder to waist in a fantastic (and gory!) display of skill. The man holds his feet for only the briefest of moments before tumbled to the dirt, failing to hold in his intestines. Unfortunately, this did little break Dmitri's fall and, if anything, only made him wholly unprepared for the sudden stop at the bottom of the pit.

As the magical pit ends, Dmitri rises to the ground with his foot planted on the greatsword fellow's back. Though badly bloodied, the man at his feet is decidedly worse.

Sneeg turns on the fellows surrounding him--Hadin with a flail glowing with holy might, Brycen with a bloodied hammer, and Dmitri ready to strike at his next victim. Sneeg snarled as the splotch of acid washed over him, scarring his already ugly face. "You're*," he growled as skin boiled around the acid burn.

Kareta, meanwhile, sends another arrow after the fleeing halfling--sticking him straight in the back and very nearly sending the man to the ground.

Driven by the righteous fury of Erastil, Hadin would not be laid low by a single blow from a coward like Sneeg. Turning the light of goodness onto the evil man before him, Hadin offered another swing of his flail and heard the sickening crunch of bone shattering and skin tearing away from the impact.
