I have nothing to contribute right now.

Thomas continues to keep an eye out on the settlement folk, and the surrounding area. While remaining near the party and Happs.

Happs' eyes shift from one man to another as the barrage of questions come at him. When all is said and done, it is Hadin's words he clings to. "What I've done is done, and yeah, I've had a change of tune. Let's just say me and the leadership didn't agree with how people was being treated. Giving up a bit of my freedom and some of my gold's a worthwhile sacrifice for my people. So-" He turns to Dendarial. "-I ain't selling. Not for any price. It's as much as symbol of my vows as one of my past." He turns back on Tyanos, a pointed finger at the sorcerer's chest. "And if there's some holier-than-thou bunch out and about, I say let them come. I'll do whatever it takes to keep my people safe."

The man takes a few deep breaths, having blurted everything out in one long-winded rant. He scans your reactions, slowly returning to a semblance of calm after being truly shaken. "And as it happens, I do know of a few other beasties about. There's a tribe of kobolds out in the hills, and plenty of strangeness in the 'Marches. Fey and worse."

M Elf (Falconer) Ranger 2 (Per: +9/(11 Human) Init:+4, HP 19/19 AC: 18//14/14 F: +4 R: +7 W: +2/4 vs enchantment)

Den frowns at the man and lowers his voice so others will not easily hear and so it will not be perceived as a direct threat. I am trying to work with you here Happs. You are an accused bandit and we would be within our charter to take you in for questioning. But if you are changing your stripes then I do not want to hamper that in any way. And you seem to have something good here, that I'd like to help. To me that pendant means you still support the bandit leader in these lands. What does it mean to you?

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

"It means I once followed the Stag Lord like a blind fool. It means that a lot of good people died for nothing. It means that even the most broken of men can find something worth living for." Happs takes a step back and rests a hand on one of his weapons. Not in an overtly hostile manner, but he's obviously uneasy. "I mean no offense, friend, because you seem nice enough--but if you're planning on takin' me anywhere, it'll have to be o'er my dead body."

Male Aasimar Sorcerer 2

Tyanos raised his hands at both man and elf.

"Hey, careful. Your getting close to being an oathbreaker Happs. Dendarial, a piece of paper doesn't make you right anymore then a pendent makes you wrong."

Why did the gods stick him with such tactless people. When he was blunt it was with a purpose and result in mind, not a habit or blunder. He may have to make them some sort of booklet on manners or something. He fixes both of them in turn with a stern expression.

"I think that's enough of all this, leave it aside. We have other things worth our time."

He walks over to Happs to defuse the whole situation. Putting a hand on his shoulder and steering him towards the settlement. He still had his guard up in case the man was the volatile sort.

"Why don't we see if you can make some sort of basic map to let us know about those kobolds and anything else you think we should know of."

Before he gets to far, he get's Thomas attention.

"Think you could check on the health of these people. See if anyone needs a bit of healing?"

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

Happs eases his hand off his blade's hilt as Tyanos approaches. "As are your companions, Tyanos. But you're right." He sighs a breath of relief, but his eyes watch Dendarial carefully as he is steered away and back towards the encampment.

"Maps, aye. I'm no cartogrammer, but I suppose I can show you the general places they lurk."

Satisfied with his inquiry, Dmitri follows Thomas and checks on the condition of the settlers. As they're walking, he starts talking to the Erastadin.

It might be wise to make a quick judgement of some people, but just remember that like anything, it should be subject to change depending on their actions.
For example, I don't trust Happs there, but I am willing to give him the benefit of doubt. If he continues to show that he has renounced his bandit ways, that mistrust may change.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

I'm a carpenter by trade, if that could be helpful to your town, Happs.. If you don't mind, I have one last question: don't you fear that this Stag Lord might try to do an example out of you, and crush your dreams of a more peaceful life? Whoever he is, you speak of him as a violent man. Did you go away in ... "good terms", or would he be the kind of man who delivers harsh retribution on those who try to turn their back on banditry? What could you tell us about him?

If Hadin woodcarving skills aren't needed right now, he will try to make himself helpful in any mundane task, giving a hand here and there and chatting amiably with anyone talkative enough.
He'll lead by example, and truly enjoy to cooperate with the residents of Happston, as Erastil teaches.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

Happs snorts a weak laugh. "Heh," he mumbles, "That man don't know what a good term is. Nah, I imagine he's rather irate 'bout the whole affair. But he's also arrogant enough to not give a rat's ass. He's the kind of feller who thinks he ought to be king of men, but only has the mojo to get a handful of idiots together. Fortunately I never dealt too closely with the man, myself."

As soon as Hadin offers his services, a young man--perhaps hardly two decades old--eagerly enlists him to help with one of the settlement's ramshackle structures. Apparently none of Happs' people are particularly skilled carpenters, and they're all on the verge of falling down in a stiff wind. Fixing them up would be a long and arduous task...

Meanwhile, Dmitri and Thomas survey the villagers for signs of injury or abuse. While a few of them certainly have marks of violence--scars, bruises, cuts and nicks that look suspiciously from blades--the majority of the people look no worse for wear than any other hard worked Golarion villager. The callouses of hard work, the splinters of working with wood, and the fatigue of trying to build something from nothing. Even the youngest among them, a young woman in her mid-teenage years, was hard at work alongside a man twice her age.

It's also clear after walking around a bit that most of Happs' people are not fighters. Sure, they may carry a dagger on their belt, but who in this land did not?

Dmitri noticed that several young lads struggled with carrying lumber towards a pile and decided it was best to give them a hand. He couldn't help but feel nostalgia - working hard, trying to give back to the community, and build a defense to the outside world. In his youth, he had served his nation proud through several opportunities such as errand boy, hired hand, and more notably, watchman. By doing civic duty, Dmitri felt honor and devotion for Rostland, and knew that his actions would further its glory. He was able to help carry several stacks before the foreman had declared a small break for libations and respite.

When he was done with his task, Dmitri turned once more to the Thomas and posed a question.

"By chance, are there any Brevics within our group?"

Den has noted the place on his map and is glad for the settlement. But he too distrusts Happs and sees no reason to stay. He would vote to move on. Note to Dmitri - Jhod did not give directions to to to any specific place. Its a big land and we have no real clue to where the temple(?) is.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

That's that, then!

Hours pass as Hadin puts a small dent into the sizable pile of work that needs to be done to really call Happs' campsite a 'settlement.' The residents are visibly grateful, and even Happs nods his approval as he barks orders at the men helping him to erect the palisade. Illana and a few others welcome your party to sit around and chat.

As the afternoon grows long and the sun journeys towards the horizon, Happs returns to the group and offers a grumpy sigh as he slumps down onto a log fashioned into a bench. "Night's coming. As much as I enjoy yer company, we ain't got room for more bodies here." Illana shakes her head disapprovingly, but does not contest the man's words. "Hate to kick ya out like this," he adds apparently as an afterthought, a roguish grin on his face.

Dmitri didn't mind Happs' sudden response, after all, they had just met. The woodsman was satisfied with the state of affairs within the sprawling colony. Gathering his pack once more, Dmitri motions the group to meet.

"Thank you Happs for your hospitality. May our paths cross again." he said with a curt nod. No need for flowery speech when work needed to be done.

As his allies slowly came forth, Dmitri smiled upon them.

"I'm proud of how you all handled yourselves today. Happs may become a friend we could call upon in this chaotic land. In any case, we should set up camp not far from here. I think it's best that we continue to chart these woods and look for anything of interest - particularly what Jhod had requested. I wouldn't want Wetscale's condition to worsen because of our efforts."

With that settled, Dmitri guides the group within the treeline and sets up camp. As usual, he takes upon first watch.

Content with the way things went at Happston, Dmitri bids them adieu and starts back to the mounts. After a few minutes saying their goodbyes to the cautious eye of Happs and the cordial waves of Illana, you double back and follow the same trail you came in on. If the mites were smart enough to cross over their own trail, it would be hard to pick up the original at this point anyway--you'd already tread over it yourselves.

Better off making camp for the night. Fortunately, the glade south of Happston is large enough to provide some cover. You make your way about an hour south, stopping on the southernmost edge of the glade. Even in the dying light, you can see the looming edge of the great forest further south. You make camp and arrange the usual watches.

Soon night falls, and the first of the watches takes its shift while the moon starts it long journey across the sky. About an hour of the way into the watch, Tyanos catches the whiff of a strange and unusual scent... but one that's vaguely familiar. Something that reminded him of his homeland.. but not in a good way. As he tries to place it, Dmitri hears a rustling through the brush.

Something is close. Watching. Waiting. You narrow your eyes to try and pinpoint the beast, but between the darkness and the undergrowth, you can't quite find the source of the noise...

Dmitri was musing to himself what Happston may become while on watch. He imagined Happs chasing away shrewd businessmen because of the cut of their jobs. A slight chuckle escaped the woodsman until a rustle within the brush caught his attention.

Patience....

Slowly reaching for his weapon, Dmitri crouched low and signalled Tyanos who was also on watch.

"We're not alone..."

Although Dmitri cannot get a good look at the beast as it rushes through the undergrowth, it is long and serpentine. It twists closer through the brush--perhaps only forty feet away, now--and keeps low to avoid any opportunity to provide a clear line of sight to it...

Which is a fancy way of saying you see something big and snake-like approaching and know roughly where it is, but don't have a particularly good view of it. Tyanos sees the same.

Male Aasimar Sorcerer 2

Tyanos snaps Dmitri an angry look with a finger pressed to his lips as the other worked and he whispered a single arcane word. By Desna did no one learn anything from their recent battles, things that wanted to kill them were sometimes smart enough to know what they were saying.

His spell took effect, it would serve both as a wake up call for the others and perhaps expose this creature fully. As he knew where it was it's would receive the greatest result. A massive roar rang up directly in front of the creature.

With that he drew his crossbow and took a step back.

Damn spell range limit. Aw well here is the alarm clock folks.

As Tyanos' magic explodes into a sudden tumult and shatters the night's serenity, the creature darts sideways and, at last, the two watchmen get a full look at the beast. The large serpentine beast was at least a half dozen feet long, with a sinuous tail snaking behind it doubling that. Gleaming eyes pierced through the darkness above a maw filled with razor sharp teeth, locked upon Tyanos. As it disappeared into another patch of ferns, the other adventurers roll to wakefulness...
