As Wetscale writhes in discomfort on the litter, the group continues to map the surrounding region. While the man in tow slows their pace a bit, it is even further slowed by the onset of darkness. Fortunately, their earlier pace had made up the difference, and another section of Dendarial's map was pieced together into a semblance of geography. The wide, blank swath of land surrounding the island of known lands loomed with as much hostility as the darkness.
With camp set up, you arrange the watches - Dendarial and Acio taking the first watch in lieu of Tyanos while his typical watch partner slumbered. The night passes mostly uneventfully. As the morn approaches and Thomas and Karina rise to do their duty, heavy clouds begin to roll across the plains. Rainy day ahead.
Karina: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Thomas: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
A sudden noise in a nearby patch of brush catches the watchmen's attention. As they raise their weapons and turn, Thomas spots a number of huddled figures approaching slowly - their shadowy silhouettes bearing unmistakable weapons. Karina does not see all of them - only the foremost pair, holding their blades in anticipation of a murderous event.
They are still about 30 feet away in the rough brush and the dim light of morning (and the low-burning fire) makes it hard to identify any real details.
Since you've spotted them and they weren't expecting to be caught, Karina and Thomas can each take a surprise round action before we get into initiatives.
Karina Orlovsky |
Karina pulls a small vial from her belt and drinks the contents, immediately shrinking to half her usual size, looking much like a halfling.
"We have people coming." Karina says quietly, making sure her companion has noticed.
Using my Reduce Person extract.
Helio RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32 |
As Thomas wakes Hadin, Karina quickly downs one of her extracts while the figures creep closer. Dendarial starts in his sleep, the sound of Thomas' cry waking him. Tyanos too wakes, a familiar scent on the wind.

Dendarial the Ken Hunter |
Dendaria, having slept in his armor, grabs for his bow and quiver and stands. He peers out behind the campfire light trying to discern the threat from moonlight and what starlight pierces the canopy.
Tyanos Strostia |
Tyanos wakes with a start and quickly get's the gist of things. Rising up he summons a spell rather then draw his weapon. The spell is simple and takes a quick word and gesture but the effect is heard if not seen. But just before it takes effect he yells out.
"To arms, these fools think they can sneak up on us! Let's have at them!"
As soon as he finishes speaking the sound of a number of metal blades scraping clear of their scabbards is heard. The result of his spell and in the darkness, which had no effect on his senses, would make the enemy think twice about their number and resources on hand.
Cast Ghost Sound, left the number vague sense I don't know how much volume that sound would take up with the spells limit. ;)
Karina Orlovsky |
Karina does her best to hide behind a tree and take the oncomers unaware. She also tries to keep the sturdier members of the group, such as Hadin, between herself and the enemies.

Ouch.
Karina wastes no time in sending a bolt the way of the attackers. A yelp of pain comes back almost immediately as one of the figures drops to a knee and clutches at his belly.
"Bastards! I told ya I'd seen something!"
"Bet these're who took out Kressle!"
"Don't that mean they're dangerous?"
"Ta hell with that, take one'a 'em and let's get outta here! The boss'll pay big!"
You can hear the sound of arrows being put to string, followed by a pair of arrows as they fly from the far off shadows. One of them manages to find Thomas as he rouses the other, piercing his armor deep into his side.
Thomas takes 4 damage!
Following behind the arrows, a trio of men come running with axes and blades held high. Two charge at Thomas at full speed, leaving the man little time to ready his weapon. The third approaches Hadin as he grabs for his weapon, interposing himself between the paladin and their target.
The impact of the charging bandits is too much for Thomas - despite his best efforts to defend himself, a sword sinks deep into his gut and consciousness slips away from him. Hadin, too, is slowed by the sudden wakefulness and finds himself being chopped by the nearest man's handaxe.
Thomas takes another 11 points of damage! Ouch...
Hadin takes 4 points of damage!
That's a helluva way to start a fight QQ

"Ta hell with that one," spits a bandit at Tyanos. "He don't know nuttin!"
Tyanos' dart of arcane energy flies across the battlefield and impacts the wounded bandit beside the loud one. The man's eyes go wide as he stumbles backward and collapses into the dirt beside the fire. Dendarial, too, wastes no time in putting an arrow into one of the opposing bowmen. The man staggers to a knee, clutching at the wound deep in his chest.
"Ferget it, Raz. Grab that one and let's get outta here!"
The half-dead bowman staggers back into the darkness as the other quickly fires an arrow back at Dendarial before following. The arrow glances over the elf's shoulder, doing little to impair his next shot.
The single bandit still standing over Thomas' unmoving body rapidly sheathes his blade and grabs for Thomas' boots. Gripping the man by his legs, the bandit proceeds to start dragging him away, pulling him nearly out of the campsite.
The man standing in front of Hadin grins wickedly as he dodges the man's blow and responds in kind. "The boss'll pay big fer yer heads!" Hadin, eyes still adjusting to the sudden wakefulness, is unable to raise his weapon in defense.
Hadin takes another 6 points of damage!
Round 2 start : Initiative Order: Den, Ty+Karina, Hadin, Thomas, Them.
Tyanos Strostia |
The darkness has no effect on Tyanos senses and dragging a body was not going to let the bandit out pace him. He runs with in range then opens a hand wide. Normally he would not catch any ally but when that ally was already unconscious then it could do no harm.
"I warned you."
A spray of color exploded into the night and over the bandit dragging his comrade. He could only hope it would cover his fellows but he would settle if needed.

There's a loud cracking sound as Hadin's flail connects with the bandit's ribs, and even lift him a little from the ground, where he falls down motionless.
Without a second glance to his own injuries, the young man comes to the rescue of his fellows.

Bandit 2 -2/9 Mostly Dead
Bandit 3 Dead.

Will: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
The bandit standing in front of Hadin's laughter stops short as the paladin's flail impacts his ribs and crushes a lung. He has just enough time to spit a mouthful of blood before unconsciousness overwhelms him and he falls, dying, to the dirt. The other standing bandit looks on in awe as Tyanos steps forward and unleashes a wave of concussive magic into his face. The man clutches at his face wildly, tearing at his eyes, as he drops to the ground.
Acio, unimpeded by the shroud of night, dives atop the fleeing man and sinks her talons into the man's back. With a yelp of pain he trips over a branch and stumbles down into the darkness. You can hear the sounds of the other bowman fleeing further into the dark of night - now beyond the fading firelight, you would need to pursue him into the darkened hills of the Greenbelt to catch him. Even in the light of day it would be difficult to pursue him over the rougher ground.
It seems, as Tyanos said, these men were far softer than Kressle. But their arrival means that the threat of banditry across the Greenbelt is far from over.
That's that, unless you want to pursue the fleeing bandit into the dark. Thomas could use some serious help, and one of the bandits is incapacitated but still perfectly healthy if you want to toss him on the pile for interrogation/execution.
Thomas Leafbearer |
Hadin, either way that is enough to stop the bleeding at -6 :)
Thomas quietly groans in pain due to Hadins manhandling of the sword and bow strike, but the bleeding stops.
Karina Orlovsky |
Karina inquires whether anyone has a rope, and after procuring one ties up the unconscious bandit. Afterward, she stands vigil over Thomas, crossbow in hand, while Hadin provides his ministrations.

Karina Orlovsky |
"We'd best move on before they come back with more," Karina says. "We can't handle another attack like that one, and I don't want to be raped or killed by some foul bandit."
Dendarial the Ken Hunter |
I am unsure if you registered Den's last shot. You did not include it in your summary. He had an 18 for 7 points of damage on one of the enemy - hopefully the one that is trying to to run. Either way…
Dendarial does not miss a beat. Bow in one hand and an arrow in the other he runs into the darkness in pursuit of the fleeing enemy. He isconfident that his superior sight and hearing, his tracking ability, and Acio's eyes in the sky will allow him to find the fleeing man. He gives a shrill whistle for the owl to "hunt" the fleeing man and she takes to the air. Next round she will swoop and attack.
I am fine playing this out or not, but its not in Den's nature to not pursue. Unless its pitch black out the elf's low light vision will let him see better than the human can, assuming no light sources other than the moon and stars. If its so dark that the man cannot see he has to move at half speed. And Acio with his flight speed should be able to attack the man every third round at the least (Fly 80). If the man stops to fight the owl then Den closes 30' or more and Acio may full attacking him that round or get an AOO as he leaves their shared square.
Helio RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32 |
@Den - your attack was counted, it's why only one guy was still up (and running for his life). Forgot to write a thingy for it, s'all. And you don't need to roll it all out - I'm pretty sure he's done for if you're going for him. This is what rangers live for!
With the moon high above and the clear sky to guide him, Dendarial has no trouble seeing the man scrambling away. Tearing wildly through the brush with no regard for the trail he was leaving behind, it would have been easy to track him even hours later. Acio's shrill cry sounds above and you glance up to see her diving down to rake her talons across the man's back. The bandit cries out and swats frantically at the bird, desperate to put some distance between himself and his hunter.
As the brush thins out you can once more see clear across the rolling plains. Putting arrow to bow Dendarial steadies his aim and waits for his breathing to calm.
The arrow flies true, sticking in the small of the bandit's back and sending him tumbling down into the dirt about one hundred feet ahead. Acio circles above, waiting.
Your call if you want to finish him or not.
Dendarial the Ken Hunter |
No murderer, even of bandits who would kill in the night, Den stabilizes the man and then none so gently drags him back to the others. He says little as he returns to camp and secures his prisoner. After that is done he will check on his cleric friend and finally confirm that the other prisoners are secure.
Thomas Leafbearer |
I must say that was unpleasant, a couple of hours for them to think over what they did will not be amiss.
Thomas will take some time to prepare his spells for the day as soon as the morning breaks.
Dendarial the Ken Hunter |
Den fuses over the prisoners. He makes sure each is well tied, but also gives them water if they are awake, Acio settles in in a branch above those tied up and watches. Den takes his turn at watch but also sleeps to avoid fatigue for tomorrow.

In time, dawn breaks over the Stolen Lands. Wetscale continues to stir through the early morning, gaining consciousness for short periods of time before turning over and fading again. Whatever poison had gotten into his system was obviously doing a number on him -- hopefully some rest in a proper bed would do him a bit better.
Thomas Leafbearer |
As dawn breaks Thomas restarts the fire and puts breakfast on. As soon as it is going, he prepares his spells for the day.
Once he is done his preparations, breakfast should be just about ready.
So bring them and ourselves back to Oleg's
Hadin "The Pale" Cassoren |
I wonder if Wetscale's reptilian body react strangely to the spider's poison... He seems to have an hard time coming back to his senses.
Hadin takes time to give some breakfast to Wetscale, before installing him the most confortably possible on the stretcher
I hope he'll soon get better...
Thomas Leafbearer |
So do I, Hadin, so do I.
Thomas takes the time to bring some of the breakfast over to the bandits that attacked us in the night.
Den, can you backtrack these people, when we get going, to see if they came on horses? Should be no more than one hour, and then we can head to Oleg's.
