Ophelia Endronil |
Turning her back on the creature, Ophelia retreats with the others.
Melufiuos Benidictus |
When Mel sees that the others are retreating, he closes his eyes and feels his way around the corner, but not before jumping about 2' in the air when he hears the creature worrying the cage.
If he has time, once he is around the corner, he will pull out his wand of burning hands CL3.
Melufiuos Benidictus |
Thinking back, how did the wall disappear? Did it simply vanish? Did it slide quickly down or to the side? I was hoping to be able to look for a switch or something to slide the wall back in place, but with that creature slamming against the bars, I doubt we'll have very long
When the creature hit the bars did we hear it AND feel the vibrations in the floor? If it continues to pound the bars, Mel will put his hand on the wall/floor to see he feels anything. (one nasty illusion?)
Man, the next time a DM offers to let me take 20 on finding traps, I think I'm gonna have to take him up on it :)
GM Harker |
Yeah, I did kind of try to throw you bone there Mel, mostly to assuage my conscious about this encounter. The wall just disappeared, as if it wasn't really there. Perhaps it was an illusion.
FYI, Ophelia, you're still in the creature's potential gaze, so if you have enough movement left to move around a corner, feel free.
The creature makes both a sound and a light vibration on the walls/ground as it tries to break out of its cell. Which it attempts right now...
With everyone's eyes closed, the group hears more rattling of bars north of their position, but no one feels a six-legged lizard nearby.

Halkale Timarson |
Hearing the creature try to get out, Halkale steels himself and opens his eyes.
Fort save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
He then fires two arrows as fast as he can, closing his eyes once the last arrow is on the way.
Attack, PBS, Rapid Shot: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 5 + 1 = 12
Damage, if hits, PBS: 1d8 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 1 = 7
Attack, PBS, Rapid Shot: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 5 + 1 = 9

Oof..my rolls have stunk lately.
Quiella |
Why do we still have our eyes closed if we can't see the Basilisk and vice versa? I honestly have no idea how to approach this one.
Moadis |
If it breaks the cage and comes here we can pile up on it. The problem of fighting there is if the basilisk runs to the back of the cage 2/3 of the party cant hit it. Then we would have to break open the cage while it gaze attacks us.
GM Harker |
Currently only Hakale and Ophelia are in line of sight of the basilisk, so only they have to keep their eyes closed if they don't want to make Fort saves. My mistake for asserting everyone would keep them closed once out of sight.
The brave Ranger opens his eyes and shoots two arrows at the creature. Although he shrugs off the creature's petrifying gaze, he sees his arrows both miss their mark before shutting his eyes again.
Yeah, it's a difficult encounter, but not impossible. I'm sure you can figure something out if you talk it through and work together.
Everyone but Halkale can still act. If you're delaying please let me know.
Quiella |
I'm not delaying, yet. As a player I'm waiting to see if the other players have ideas. I guess Quiella is doing more or less the same thing in-character, at the moment.
Valik Frost |
Are there any mirrors or reflective surface we could use. Thinking along the lines of looking it mirror at basilisk to avoid gaze?
Melufiuos Benidictus |
I'm not delaying. I'm readying the wand attack, hoping that a blind aoe attack will hit anyway.

Ophelia Endronil |
Ophelia draws and loads her crossbow, keeping her back to the creature.
Next round, I'll risk a shot.
Valik Frost |
fort: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Valik, opens his eyes to see Hal steel his nerve versus the creatures glare. He hears two shots ring out on what he presumes are the bars of the cage. He decides that the creature will continue attempting to escape his confibes. He, rather against his nature, decides to see if his older body can fend off the creatures glare. He turns the corner and looks at the beast.
Feeling his body still moving, he continues towards the cafe. When adjacent, he takes a swing with his weapon, hoping to strike true.
Sansetsukon: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 221d10 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Quiella |
Can I put a sack over my head to keep from seeing the basilisk? Then I could look at the ground through the hole my head goes through so as to walk down the hall. Not sure if that is functionally any better than just closing my eyes though...
GM Harker |
I'm going to say that a sack on your head protects you from gaze attacks 10' away or more. If the creature is adjacent to your square, it acts the same as averting your eyes, assuming you're looking through the hole.
Unless you rip the bedroll's sheets apart, it only protects one person at a time, acting the same as closing your eyes.
Are you trying the sack trick then, Quiella?
Melufiuos Benidictus |
I thought I was on delay (readying the wand), but if I can go now, then I guess I will do this.
The young, impressionable elf growls in frustration as he begins to move. He slides north up the hallway with his back to the west wall, like he was hugging a cliff face. His eyes are closed, as if he were afraid to look down at the long fall below. Stealth to avoid a directed gaze?: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
When he gets far enough that his hands brush up against the bars of the cell/cage, he stops. With fear, mischeviousness, and determination warring for control of his face, he slides the wand of burning hands in between the bars, points it northward and utters the word of command. His eyes are still closed.
CL3 burning hands damage: 3d4 ⇒ (4, 4, 3) = 11
Quiella |
Quiella pulls a sack out of her backpack, and drops it over her head. Moadis, I'm going down the hall. I'm not really sure what I'm going to do when I get there, but I won't cower in this corner while the others fight.
GM Harker |
The group readies itself to deal with the basilisk.
Still seeing potential food sources, the monster tries once again to break out of its cage, but the bars hold firm.
Valik advances towards the creature and smacks it between the bars with his sansetsukon. Despite having his eyes open, the monk does not turn to stone.
Keeping his eyes closed, Melufiuos successfully sneaks up to the creature and gives the creature terrible burns from that handy wand he picked up in the gillman cave. Having no clue about the impeding attack, the creature is unable to jump out of the way to minimize the river of flame.
Despite all my rage, I'm still just a Basilisk in a cage: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
Reflex: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Ophelia, Halkale, Quiella, and Moadis are up!
Halkale Timarson |
Fort: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Emboldened by his success, Halkale tries to open his eyes sooner and keep them open for longer.
Attack, PBS, Rapid Shot: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 5 + 1 = 8
Damage, if hits, PBS: 1d8 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 1 = 8

Quiella walks behind Valik and steps up to the cage. She lifts the sack off of her head and then swings her Scimitar at the Basilisk with both hands through a gap in the cage bars.

Ophelia Endronil |
Keeping her eyes low, Ophelia moves forward and takes a shot at the creature.
Taking a shot with my crossbow, averting my eyes.
Make the fort save?: 1d100 ⇒ 66 No save.
Concealment: 1d100 ⇒ 29
Attack: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (2) - 3 = -1 Standard attack is at +1, with a -4 for shooting into melee.
AHAHAHAHAHAH no.
GM Harker |
Ophelia's bolt somehow strikes the ceiling instead of the creature.
The basilisk takes a few steps towards Quiella and directs its full gaze at her. The gnome paladin is unable to resist the terrible gaze this time and instantly turns to stone.
Quiella's Fort save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
As I mentioned in the spoiler about gaze attacks, the basilisk can take a standard action to try to petrify one target in addition to the saves everyone has to make per turn. Valik knows that the basilisk's blood can be used to reverse the petrification if it's applied fairly quickly after the person turns to stone, so all is not lost assuming you kill the creature.

Valik Frost |
All is not lost. The beasts blood can restore her back to normal. But the blood only last hours
Valik, steels his nerves and tries to face the beast head on again. This time however, his body cannot overcome the creatures deadly natural defense. His body ever so slowly turns to stone. Before his body succumbs, he says one last word, Remember that you can overcome, just stick together
fort: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

GM Harker |
Valik gives the group words of wisdom, as well advice on how to save him, before turning to stone himself.
Now more than aware of the burning stick being wielded against him, the basilisk jumps away from the flames, but still gets slightly burnt.
Reflex + Cover: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 6 + 2 = 23
Ophelia and Moadis are up.

Moadis moves out of the corner to charge the beast just in time to see his companions turn into stone!

Roll to see if Moadis has to make Fort Save, low means he does need to make a save: 1d100 ⇒ 27
Moadis' Fort Save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
Moadis' attack misses and, despite having his eyes averted, the paladin catches a glimpse of the creature that turns him to stone.
I'd like to warn the remaining players that if anyone else turns to stone, there won't be enough blood to restore everyone.
Ophelia
