Dr. Stefan Von Herzog |
The doctor casts a spell at the door, and a beam of white energy fires at it.
Casts disrupt undead.
Ranged touch: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Positive energy damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Edit: Critical hit confirm?: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
critical damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
GM Harker |
Dr. Von Herzog singes the door with a ray of positive energy and it immediately stops moving. Undoubtedly his well placed shot has neutralized the haunt for now.
With that minor threat dealt with, Drace leads the group through the west door to discover a number of small offices full of ledgers and files detailing the running of the prison from 50 years ago. As you look through some of the papers you find information concerning prisoner files, income, supplies, scheduling, and repair requests. It would take some time to properly organize them into a useful repository of information, but nothing seems immediately useful to the task at hand.
When you're ready to move on, please let me know the next door.
Drace Kross |
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 12
Drace will peek around the offices casually as he slowly makes his way down the hall. "We can archive this later if need be. Anyone spot anything interesting? If not I'll open up this door here..."
GM Harker |
Nothing else is discovered in the office areas other than more papers relating to the functioning of the prison.
Moving to the next door, Drace looks inside to find a spacious room that smells of mildew and rot. A long desk and chair sit to the south, while to the northwest a narrow alcove contains a closed safe. Thick layers of dust cover everything in sight.
Vivian Deberth |
Please, allow me to check it, Drace.
Vivian will first carefully study the path to the safe, then the safe itself, looking for traps, before trying to open it.
Perception for traps, taking 20 for 27 , Disable device for open lock taking 20 for 29
GM Harker |
No dangers are discovered after Drace and Vivian examine the room more thoroughly. Satisfied that she won't be interrupted, the intrepid young redhead spends some time attempting to crack the safe.
Placing an ear to the safe, she listens carefully to the tumblers inside in an effort to find the correct combination, but she can't quite crack the code. She then tries to use her tools to jimmy the door open, but that is also unsuccessful.
Sorry, super high Disable Device DC on the safe.
Dr. Stefan Von Herzog |
As he watches Vivian attempt to crack the safe, the doctor suggests, "Perhaps we'll find a clue to the combination somewehere in the ruins of this facility."
Drace Kross |
"Can't be helped I guess." Drace said looking at the safe. "If we don't find a combination elsewhere. I suppose we can get the smith to drill the lock."
If nothing else happens, Drace will lead on to the next door and next room.
GM Harker |
Feeling perhaps a little disheartened after leaving the room with the safe, the group next tries the northwest door. There isn't much of interest in the room beyond, other than a large wash basin with a drain. To the west is another door, but looking inside it appears to be just a privy.
Vivian Deberth |
Well, maybe with better lockpicks... Or some divine help...Or a little more training. This safe isn't safe from me forever.
Wow, better than a 29? I wonder what the DC was. Was I far from managing to open the lock?
Tara Eliade |
Stretching a bit as Vivian attempts to break into the safe, Tara is disappointed when their efforts do not seem to make any headway. "I'm sure that Mr. Kross is correct. There has to be some sort of note about how to open this safe somewhere in this complex. Shall we move on? I would like to give that cold haunt a crack, now that I'm fully rested." Glancing back at the double doors Teilaenthis had entered into yesterday, Tara waits to hear what the group would like to do.
From my experience with other aps, most manacles start at a DC 35, so I wouldn't be surprised if the safe has a similar, if not higher DC
GM Harker |
The Disable Device DC is 30 :)
Working a little longer together with Teilaenthis, Vivian finally manages to crack the safe. Inside she finds numerous out-of-date legal documents, 500gp, and a wooden rack holding 4 green potions, 3 clear potions, and 2 blue potions.
These are potions of Cure Moderate Wounds.
These are potions of Lesser Restoration
These are potions of Remove Disease.
As for moving forward, there are also three doors in the center hallway if you want to avoid returning to the cold room for now.
Teilaenthis Arcanos |
"I was not specifically taught, but my affinity for feeling invoking the psychic residue and purpose for objects is increased by my understanding of how the objects work. So I have made a study of how things work..."
GM Harker |
Drace leads the group back to the long center hallway in the middle of the first floor and tries the southwest door found there. Opening it, the group discovers another long hallway that extends 70 ft to the east. Fifteen feet in, another hallway forms an upside down 'T' with it and heads north, while another passage also leads north at the very end of the 70 ft. hallway.
If my description is a little confusing, just consult the updated map. :)
GM Harker |
If you haven't gotten the chance to identify those potions from earlier, feel free to make the rolls now and we'll say you did so before this combat started.
As Drace pushes the door open, it falls off its hinges with a loud thump. The rectangular chamber beyond seems to have once been a chapel, but now thick sheets of what appear to be cobwebs drape everything within in gossamer threads. Four giant spiders then quickly emerge and begin to make their way towards Drace.

Still in the office...
Stefan examines the potion bottles for a moment, then casts a spell. His eyes glow with a pale blue light as he raises them, swirls them around, and opens them to look at the liquid directly.
Spellcraft (green potions - DC 18): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Spellcraft (clear potions - DC 18): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18

"These green potions are medicinal: they should instantly heal wounds. Indeed, these healing potions are more potent than those we found in the false crypt in the Restlands." cure moderate wounds
"The clear potions are restorative, and can return strength or vigor lost to poison or physical exertion, and can also clear the mind of torpor." lesser restoration
"Alas, the nature of the blue potions eludes me."

Now...
With a look of shock at the giant insects, the doctor steps through the door while casting a spell. Jets of flame shoot from his hands, engulfing two of the giant spiders.
Casts burning hands. Reflex save DC 14 for half damaage.
fire damage: 2d4 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2
EDIT: Great. Minimum damage.
GM Harker |
Dr. Von Herzog enters the doorway and lightly scorches the two spiders closest to the entrance, although the one with reddish markings looks slightly more injured by the fan of flames. Some of webbing nearby also quickly burns away, revealing a worn representation of a purple spiral hanging from the wall, the holy symbol of Pharasma.
White Save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Red Save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Teilaenthis Arcanos |
Teilaenthis quickly moves in front of the doctor as his earthbreaker starts to crackle with arcane energy. He swings at the southern-most spider with a solid crunch.

Damage: 2d6 + 7 ⇒ (1, 5) + 7 = 13

Tara Eliade |
Wrinkling her nose at the sight of the bulbous spiders, Tara draws her dagger. Moving up to the rest of the group, she allows the close combat fighters to enter before crowding the room with unnecessary bodies."Drace! Are you alright?" Tara calls out to the fighter, concerned about the spider bites.
Drace Kross |
"Yep! No problem! Going in!" Drace grunts as he watches Teil mash the red spider into dust.
Drace closes and swings out at a spider with his scimitar, though his swing aims wide.
Scimitar Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Scimitar Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
GM Harker |
Drace moves into the room and attacks, but the quick spider dodges his strike.
Sentir remains quietly in the back, keeping an eye on things in case something else decides to attack from the rear. Full Defense for Sentir.
The remaining three spiders then converge on the fighter, with the one in the rear moving up vertically on the wall to join the others in attempting to bite him. Fortunately Drace is well armored enough that he deflects all three attacks.

Take that, you multi-legged freak!
The redhead childishly pumps her fist in the air as the stone hits its target
GM Harker |
Although it's not apparent at the moment, Stefan's icon is obscuring the door to the room with the spiders. I moved you behind him, Vivian, to give you a line of sight on one of the spiders. My apologies for the map not being 100% clear.
Vivian tosses a sling bullet at the spider crawling on the wall and firmly hits it in the abdomen. That did not confirm, sorry.
Everyone else!
Sentir Damutu |
Sentir, not that it matters in this instance, but did you add in the negative penalty from the blackened curse?
I didn't, because I saw it was so low I didn't want to waste time looking up the negative. I would have and was ready to. I know I forgot int he past, thanks for keeping tabs on me.
Dr. Stefan Von Herzog |
Entering the room to provide his companions more opportunity to attack the spiders, Stefan casts another spell at one of the spiders. A jet of freezing air and ice crystals fires from his outstretched hand at one of them.
Casts ray of frost.
Ranged touch attack, firing into melee: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (19) + 2 - 4 = 17
cold damage: 1d3 ⇒ 2
GM Harker |
I'll assume Stefan attacks the spider that is injured already.
Sentir fires his crossbow over Drace's shoulder, but the bolt completely misses.
Dr. Von Herzog moves into the web covered room and casts a ray of ice at the spider on the wall. The magical projectile hits the spider in its center, forming some light frost on its hairy exoskeleton but not yet defeating it.
Teil, Drace, and Tara
Teilaenthis Arcanos |
Teil steps up beside Drace and swings at the spider due north of him with his earthbreaker, magic still crackling down the weapon.

Drace Kross |
"Nice swing!" Drace called to Teil watching him land a mighty blow at the spider. Drace quickly lashes out in a twin attack with his sword and shield.

Scimitar Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

GM Harker |
Teilaenthis easily slays the spider in front of him with another strike from his earthbreaker. Drace attacks with both his scimitar and spiked shield, but his target spider avoids both hits.
With the battle well in hand, Tara stays back and places herself in a defensive posture. Tara takes a Full Defense Action
The spider with white markings ineffectually attempts to bite Teilaenthis, while the other spider tries to do the same to Drace with the same lack of results.

There was another smaller spider just there, on the wall, ready to jump on Drace from behind, but I got it, really!

Drace Kross |
Drace flinches as the spider attempts to bite him. Resulting in a rushed, and ineffectual attack.

Tara Eliade |
Making a face, Tara is unsure as to what she can do to not be in the way. "Uh, is everything going alright in there?" she inquires, preparing to wade into combat if she is needed.
Unsure as to what to do to help expedite the combat. I will hold Tara's turn.
GM Harker |
Perhaps missing his true calling as an exterminator, Teilaenthis destroys yet another spider.
While Tara waits to see if she is needed, Sentir fires another crossbow bolt at the spider on the wall. Ill luck seems to have suddenly grabbed hold of him, as his second bolt goes just as wild as the first.
