Your humble narrator

Oh, ignore the comment about the quasit being dazed; I had to change that out because I forgot that daze doesn't work on creatures over 4HD.

Cerin looks at Krissina and sees her still considering the jump. "Be careful. Whatever you do, Gozreh be with you." With a light touch on the arm, he races back down the stairs towards Lynnda to see to her injuries. He racks his brain as he runs, trying to think of some way to defeat the seemingly invincible demon.

Cast guidance on Krissina: +1 to any attack, skill, or save.

Standing at the edge of the pool, Lynnda casts a spell. A cone of bright, multicolored rays explodes from her hands, engulfing the hovering demon.

"Take THAT, b1tch!"

Through the double doors, you all see and hear Halvor running back toward the cathedral, still gripping his ranseur in both hands.

Cerin casts a spell on Krissina, and she feels the spirits of nature guiding and reassuring her as she ponders whether or not to make a running jump at the flying, cat-sized demon.

Lynnda casts a spell and a burst of scintillating colors engulfs the quasit. Its expression slackens and its eyes lose focus, as if it doesn't seem aware of its surroundings.

Unfortunately for Kyrian, he fired another arrow at the demon at the same time Lynnda's spell went off, and he lost his target just as he let the arrow fly. The arrow bounces off the ceiling and clatters to the floor.

@Krissina: The demon is currently stunned for 1 round. It is denied its Dex bonus, and you get a +2 to hit. I'll say you held action until Lynnda's spell went off, so if you want to try to grab it, now would be the time!

Also: Bonus bit of information that anyone with a rank of Knowledge (planes) would know: Corporeal demons need to breathe...

Halvor moves back into the room, anger apparent on his face as he sees the demon fluttering there, slack-jawed. Unable to do anything about it just yet, he just gets as close as he can.

Krissina grimaces trying to push thoughts about hitting the pool out of her head and sprints, then leaps towards the Quasit...

Not sure if that's a hit or not, so over to you, if it works, she'll try and hold the little thing under the water

Your humble narrator

With a deep breath, Krissina runs across the pulpit and takes a flying leap off the edge, arms outstretched to grab the stunned quasit. Time seems to slow for her as she arcs through the air. When she reaches the demon, one hand grabs one of its wings, the other grabs its opposite leg. Pulling the horrid thing close to pin its arms, the two plummet into the pool below, landing with a splash. The landing stings a bit, but belly-flopping usually does. The water in the pool is shockingly cold-- like a river in the middle of winter. It's also only about four-and-a-half feet deep in the center, where you end up, and the floor slopes upward to the edges, where it's only about eighteen inches deep. Krissina finds her footing and her head appears above the water. She is still holding the quasit.

Between the chill of the water and having something on which to focus the feeling of rage, Krissina's sickened condition ends.

Krissina, take 1d6 ⇒ 3 nonlethal damage from the fall and another 1d3 ⇒ 1 nonlethal cold damage. The water is so cold, you'll take 1d3 nonlethal cold damage per round while you're in it.

Cerin jumps into the pool to assist Krissina with drowning the cat-sized demon. He finds the coldness of the water bracing.

Krissina continues to hold the demon under water. It starts to struggle weakly as Lynnda's magic begins to wear off.

Kyrian also jumps into the pool, drawing his shortsword. "Aah! This water is colder than Urgathoa's t1ts!" He stabs the creature while it struggles against Krissina's hold. Kyrian takes 1d3 ⇒ 1 nonlethal cold damage.

Lynnda walks up to the edge of the pool to watch her friends struggle against the demon. "Sorry! I'm pretty much out of magic!"

I'm going to rule that Halvor takes control of the grapple, as he got a 26 on his grapple check.

We are out of combat now.

Krissina, Halvor, Cerin, and Kyrian hold the limp body of the quasit under the water for another several seconds. Tentatively, they release it, and the body sinks to the bottom of the pool. Kyrian thinks to grab the demon's tiny dagger. He also notices that she had a small wand tucked into her belt, and he grabs that as well. Satisfied that the thing is dead, the four adventurers climb out of the pool. Krissina especially is chilled to the bone, and shivers uncontrollably.

Each of you takes some more nonlethal cold damage from the icy water. Halvor-6, Krissina-8, and Kyrian-6

Looking around the cathedral, you see that the triangular pool of golden viscous water on the pulpit is still glowing, although noticeably less brightly than it was when you entered the chamber.

You examine the smaller doors to the left and right of the entrance, and find that they are supply closets. One contains three ancient-looking ranseurs, and rusted blades of five more on the floor. The other contains tattered remains of what appear to be clerical robes. Both the ranseurs and the tattered clothing seem very similar to what the other claw-faced abominations you'd encountered had been using.

Cerin climbs from the pool and shakes himself off. "That was quite bracing!"

As he looks around to see the others shivering and shaking, he starts checking them for frostbite and shooing them back through the door. "I'm sorry, you look as if you're chilled to the bone! Let's get you back to town and into some dry clothes. After some of Ameiko's warm soup you should be fine. It looks like there is nothing else here, don't worry I will take care of filling in the Sheriff and getting someone down here to destroy that altar."

He does not like the look of the blackness spreading down Krissina's fingers, so he taps her once with the wand before leaving. He also examines Lynnda's wound. "That doesn't look too bad, you seem to be fighting off the poison nicely. I think you will be fine after a good night's sleep, but let me check it in the morning."

Kyrian spends a moment to remove his leather off his chest, and then takes his shirt off. Putting his leather back on, he wrings the water out of his shirt and slings it over his shoulder. "I think I can hold off until later, but I definitely wouldn't mind some different pants. Can't keep everything cool under pressure..." he says with a light chuckle. Looking over at what Halvor speaks about, he nods his head in the same direction. "Yea, what about that? You think you can make something out of what ever the hell that is?"

Thank you thank you, it feels good to be back.

Lynnda walks up the stairs to the pulpit and peers quizzically at the triangular pool with the glowing golden water. She reaches out with her hand and holds it a few inches above the pool. After a moment, she stands.

"This water—or whatever it is—is even colder than the other pool. It almost felt like it was pulling the heat out of my hand."

She steps back and casts a spell, causing her eyes to glow faintly with a bluish light. She stares intently at the triangular pool.

After a moment, she takes a step back.

"That was kind of scary. This pool is an extremely potent magical source. It has very strong aura—the strongest I've ever seen—but I can't identify the type of magic. And I also can't tell exactly what it does. We noticed that the demon cut herself and let blood drip into this pool, and that caused one of those ugly f**kers to rise out of the other pool. The second one she conjured caused the glow of this pool to lessen. I wonder if it's running out of power? Does it need demon blood to activate?"

She draws her dagger and holds her left hand near it. "Should we test it?"

Drawing an arrow, Kyrian knocks it up and gets ready to let loose at the pool. "Are we sure that it's the smart thing to do? We barely know what it is to begin with. Now you want to feed it? Feed it if you want, but I'm only preparing because my ass is too damned pretty to die down here by one of those things."

Male Human Fighter 2; Init +1, Per +1; AC 21/12/19; HP 14/22 F+5, R+1, W+2 (+3 vs Fear)

Halvor shrugs, getting his longsword and shield ready. "I suppose a test is in order. We can take one of those things down by itself, if needed."

Your humble narrator

Nodding at Halvor's reassurance, Lynnda pricks the index finger of her left hand, letting a drop of blood fall into the triangular pool. Both pools bubble, but you notice that neither bubble as vigorously as they had earlier. You note that the glow of the triangular pool lessens some more.

You all draw your weapons and surround the pool while it bubbles.

A three-foot-tall, mishapen creature rears from the water on two fleshy, clawed feet. It has no arms-- it looks more like a head with two legs, but its horrific mouth looks just like that of the earlier abominations. It screeches as it scrambles out of the pool, attacking Kyrian!

After the thing is dispatched, Lynnda asks, "This pool's glow got dimmer. I think that those... things... must use some amount of power from this pool to be 'born.' Plus, that thing looked like a half-formed version of the things we fought earlier. Should I do it again?"

Hard to get much better than that!

Calling upon the wisdom of Gozreh to discern the unnaturalness in the glowing pool, Cerin views its magical aura.

Using the sight bestowed upon him by the Wind and the Waves, he sees that the pool radiates an extremely strong aura of necromancy. He also gets a feeling of anger from it. The anger isn't from within himself, but from the magic of the pool.

The aura centers on the triangular pool, and its energies flow upward and outward into the ceiling of the chamber; Cerin has no doubt that the magic of the pool extends widely above the surface of the earth over the town, and even into the countryside! The aura almost looks like a net or a funnel, and closer examination reveals that it is just that: and the energies emanating from the triangular pool are set to catch some specific kind of magical energy. He can also see a powerful magical tendril that connects the power of the triangular pool with the larger pool, and that whatever is collected by the magical net gets released into that pool.

Although this magical net is powerful, he can also tell that the reservoir of whatever the net catches has gotten very, very low. The brightness of the glowing water reveals how much energy remains in the reservoir. Gazing upon the ripples of the magical auras, Cerin is fairly certain that if the reservoir of energy within the triangular pool is exhausted, the invisible magical net will collapse, and the whole artifact would go dormant. He cannot tell, though, what might wake it up again.

Cerin lets out a low whistle. "This is a very powerful Necromantic artifact! Your instincts are good, Lynnda. It's siphoning magical energy from the entire area, but if we can exhaust the energy we can at least make it go dormant. And hopefully it will stay that way for a long time!"

After making sure everyone else is ready, he nods for Lynnda to use the pool again.

With a nod, Lynnda pricks her finger again, and lets another drop of blood fall into the faintly-glowing triangular pool. Both pools bubble again, but this time the bubble in the triangular pool are rather feeble. The glow in the triangular pool lessens to a very faint flicker.

Grabbing another arrow just in case, Kyrian looks up at the group. "So how many more do we want to drudge up before we call it done for?"

The work seemed to be going well, so Halvor just takes his place again, ready to strike down another of the terrible things.

"I think once more might take care of it." Cerin looks into the pool and purses his lips in thought. "Although by the looks of the last few creatures and the amount of energy left, the next one might not be much more than a quivering mound of flesh..."

"Hmm... I suppose you're right in that. The last couple of them made goblins look sexy, and that's pretty much impossible to do." Kyrian says as he chuckles.

Your humble narrator

Grimacing at Kyrian's comment about seedy goblins, Lynnda pricks her finger again. A droplet of blood falls into the triangular pool.
Both pools bubble extremely violently, and you all feel the floor tremble and walks shake. Then there's a flash from the triangular pool, and it stops bubbling completely.
The other pool ripples and boils, splashing icy water onto the floor of the chamber. Suddenly, the pool erupts with hundreds of tiny wads of squirming flesh with flailing appendages! They surge out of the pool in a cluster of teeth and claws.

Halvor: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
Krissina: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Kyrian: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Lynnda: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
fleshdreg swarm: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

The swarm wins group initiative.

Round 1

GM only:
swarm damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1

The mass of tiny fleshdregs surges out of the pool and swarms over Halvor. The revolting mass of squirming flesh bites and scratches the warrior as individual lumps climb his legs and jump at his torso, biting and scratching him. Thankfully, few of its teeth and claws penetrate his armor. Take 1 hp damage.

Your turn!

"Disgusting!" Halvor flails as the mass of revolting flesh assaults him, retreating. "How are we supposed to fight that?"

Cerin races down the stairs, his mind racing. How can we destroy these things?!? Reaching the edge of the swarm, he slashes at a few of them to try to get them off Halvor. "Anyone have any oil?" he calls out without much hope.

Cerin:
The swarm of creatures resembles miniature versions if the earlier things that crawled out of the pool. You don't know anything about these creatures specifically. However, when dealing with swarms of rats or bats, you know that weapons that swat or smash are more effective than those that poke or cut. Alchemist's fire or area spell effects are generally effective against swarms.
