Tears at Bitter Manor

The Blakros Museum rises into the night sky, its single black spire severing the full moon in twain. The black iron gates surrounding the exhibition hall grind in protest against the wind. Beyond, the museum’s large oaken doors stand wide open, a silver-gray mist belching forth from the cavernous darkness within.

You wonder how you ended up here, standing at the precipice of unknown terrors, and instantly Venture Captain Adril Hestram’s wide looming face is conjured into your minds’ eye. His booming words ring out from memory as clearly as he spoke them only a short while ago:
“The Blakros Museum is cursed. Some darkness has descended upon the place and those who enter are blasted with evil and left raving through its halls, more beast than men. The curator, Nigel Aldain, is an old associate of the Society, though he chose to leave our organization some years back after a disagreement.”

Adril looked sheepish then, as if remembering some distasteful incident from his youth.

“Nigel has long denied the Society access to the Blakros Museum’s considerable collection of relics and scrolls, using his extensive contacts to nab several excellent finds right out from under us... he always had a nose for the hunt. Whatever is past between Nigel and the Society, he needs our help now. Perhaps if we can come to his aid, he may think on rejoining the Pathfinder Society, or at least offering to share his discoveries with us.”

“Apparently the trouble at Blakros Museum began this morning, shortly after a wayward Pathfinder named Lugizar Trantos returned to Absalom after months spent in the Mwangi Expanse. Supposedly, instead of coming straight to the Lodge to report in, he went to Blakros, sold his finds to Nigel, and then disappeared with a hefty sum of gold. The few who glimpsed Lugizar claimed he was much changed by his time in the Mwangi... gaunt, his eyes yellowed and unfocused, a strange rasping cough that seemed to wrack his now wasted frame. Whatever he brought back with him, we believe it is the cause of the Blakros Museum’s ills. Root it out.”

Before you left, Adril handed you a folded map of the museum, a flashy piece of card that looks like it's meant to be given to patrons. He also suggested you head to the offices first to find Nigel as he may have some insight into whatever foul curse vexes the place.

Root it out. Your final order from Adril. All that's left is for you to proceed...

You've had very little time before coming to the Blakros Museum, on the way here you searched your brain (or quickly asked around) for any knowledge about the issue at hand.

Knowledge (History) DC 10:
Much of the Mwangi’s darkest interior worships a demon lord named Angazhan, who is described in the Book of the Damned as a thing of primordial darkness, a foul-breathed demon who grunts prophecies of blood to apes and madmen. The jungle is his beating heart

Knowledge (History) DC 15:
The Gorilla King’s dread city was founded hundreds of years past by cultists who bowed to Angazhan. It is said they captured the souls of monkeys in the wood-grains of strange idols called Tik Taan. The monkeys’ tormented spirits became the slaves and playthings of Angazhan, who murdered their playful whims and replaced them with a deep-seated hate and wild madness. These Tik Taan are rumored to shred the sanity of anyone who spends too long in their presence.

Knowledge (History) DC 20:
The cultists who created the Tik Taan were hunted by a brave tribe of the Mwangi called the Jambala Jaeg. The Jambala Jaeg created ritual knives, crafted out of bone handles and obsidian blades, to slay the demons inside the Tik Taan. Legends speak of the deadly mists of the Tik Taan, ill humors that invade men’s hearts by seeping into their mouths. Anyone wearing a scarf or other protection against the airborne menace is immune to its effects.

Knowledge (Local) or Diplomacy, DC 10:
Lugizar Trantos spent the better part of a year in the Mwangi Expanse. At first he wrote letters to his brother and wife, but after a few months these stopped coming and most gave him up for dead.

Knowledge (Local) or Diplomacy, DC 15:
His letters spoke of a lucrative find at one point, three idols of dark wood carved in the shape of bearded monkeys.

Knowledge (Local) or Diplomacy, DC 20:
The last of his letters evidenced an unhinged mind, and was covered in strange sketches of monkey paws. He described dark eyes glaring out from the mists. Shortly after his return to Absalom, many of the monkeys and apes in the city’s menageries attacked their keepers and fled into greater Absalom.

Silas steps forward and takes the map, scanning it for a moment and then handing it off to the nearest of his new comrades. What little of him is not shrouded in a heavy cloak and cowl is misshapen, and coloured an ugly blotchy red. He uses a polearm almost as a walking stick and hunches over, occasionally the tip of a tail can be seen beneath his robes covered in entwining veins a repellent pale pinkish thing -like something found under a rock.

Thinking for a moment he rasps, "Lugizar Trantos spent the better part of a year in the Mwangi Expanse. I hear he wrote letters to his brother and wife, but after a few months these stopped coming and he was given up for dead. If I recall correctly much of the Mwangi’s darkest interior worships a demon lord named Angazhan, who is described in the Book of the Damned as a thing of primordial darkness, a foul-breathed demon who grunts prophecies of blood to apes and madmen. The jungle is his beating heart, they say. That would seem to fit our accursed museum, though of course it could be any of a myriad of other dark beings."

Wyeth glances up from the map at Saitama's comment. "With what Adril said, that was no cold Lugizar had. Something much worse."

He returns his attention to the handout. "This so-called 'map' is a waste of paper and ink, nothing even marked. But this," he says, pointing at the Northwest section, "looks like an office. If the place is haunted, we should go around the outside and bang on this window." He points to the one in the upper right corner of the map, on the wall running East-West. "If this Nigel person's in the office he'll come. If he's not, we can go in that way. Win-win."

At INT 8 Wyeth isn't going to be much of a tactician, but he's not at the level of "Gronk smash!" either. I think basic "street smarts" would justify his suggestion.

EDIT: Just noticed East is to the right, not "up" as I'd presumed. Adjusted the compass directions accordingly.

The Harrower chimes in as the group approaches the Museum with with some information about the Mwangi and the demons that dwell there.

"We should be wary of the supernatural and occult when dealing with the savages of the Mwangi jungles... Especially those beholden to the ape-men that live there. Many worship a demon lord called Angazhan who deals in blood and prophesies. Specifically, the worship of Angazhan centered around the Gorilla King's city, and the cultist were said to capture the souls of mokeys in wooden idols called Tik Taan... the captured souls are now said to render anyone who stays in the presence of the Tik Taan insane..."

He cocks a grin breaking up his tale of the dire and occult and follows up, "If we're lucky that's all hog-wash but I'd be careful about anything ape-shaped when dealing with artifacts of the Mwangi, which we will be if what I've heard about this Trantos character is true... Supposedly he spent too much time in the Mwangi and after letters from him topped reaching his family he was thought to be lost or dead. However, the letters spoke of quite the lucky find at once point... notably the find consisted of wooden monkey idols."

The grin widens as the Varasian clears his throat and continues, "His last letter was mostly sketches of monkey paws and spoke of dark eyes glaring out from the mists... Even more odd - once he came back here, it is said all the apes in Absalom went insane."

The Szcarni fortune teller begins cutting his Harrow deck idly in one hand as he parrot squawks out "Ill winds blowing... ill winds blowing."

Silas peers into the offices and sees that the offices are lighted by globes on the walls which shed light, probably a continual light effect. The door to this chamber was once a pane of expensive frosted glass, which now lies in broken shards on the floor. Within the office several desks lie overturned, papers in disarray, and chairs smashed to kindling. A sturdy steel cabinet sits against the back wall, its doors much battered and dented.

Within the offices strange mists roils near the floor and ceiling, creating a strange patch of visibility stretching from knee-height to a few feet overhead. The smoky tendrils flow up and down the walls unnaturally and savage visages swirl to life, fanged mouths agape, before
dissolving into mist once more.

Looking at Wyeth then back at Silas, Marduk holds for a moment.
"Hmm, i don't know what this mist is, but i'm taking a guess what it "could" do.
Let me give an example from own experience.

He thinks back to his very early years back in the city, riding with his father on the cattle-cart.
"You go to a market and work with cows. Until the market starts said cows stand in a small barn. When you enter after it being locked for a certain time, those cows have.....defecated in there. That gives off a foul smell in the air. If the temperature is right, you can see it. A foul odor indeed, trust me. Not good for the early morning nose, i had to throw up the first few times i went there."

He pauses to see if any of his fellows would come to a conclusion with a solution.
"Best way to avoid something bad you can smell or inhale is to not smell or breathe it directly at all. Of course my father was so nice not to tell me this those times. The man came in with a towel before his face."

Marduk stands for a moment, thinking back on the course fate took bringing him from a cattlecart to the temple and here.

Nodding at Marduk's story, Wyeth reaches behind himself and grabs his cloak. (Yes, he has a cloak).

"Don't need a towel."

He pulls the lower edge of it across his face below his eyes and ties it off in the back. The result is not unlike a kerchief tied over the face bandit style, but with the excess cloth trailing down over his left shoulder to his back.

Just to be sure, Marduk does something similar.
With the discipline one could expect from a monk, he neatly rips off a long piece from the bottom of his cloak. (traveler's outfits have cloaks...) Wrapping it around his face, only his eyes and up are visible.
