Female Human (Varisian) Sorcerer 3

Ophelia nods at Nik, Of course, go ahead, Nik.

I hope this doesn't take too long. Trisane didn't mention the ledger...if that's our only chance of finding Tobar, we should hold on to it.

Silver Crusade

Male Human (Chelaxian) Ranger (Sable Company Marine/Urban Ranger)/3

Trisane tries to finish up with the clerk as best he can. He shows some level of discomfort when he describes how the children murdered.

As I've said before, these two men are charged with theft, kidnapping and murder. As for the children, I only know my nephew, Pellius was among the ones we found. I don't know the others' names.

He shows some level of disgust when he describes how the children were murdered.

From what I can tell, Yargrin and the gnome used shiver to torture and murder the children. The stolen goods are in this lockbox as proof. Gaedren was far worse and fed them to...

Trisane takes a moment to avoid losing his temper and steps away from the desk.

I think that's enough for my report. If you need more feel free to ask my friends here or go down to Westpier 17 and see for yourself.

I hope this clerk will listen to others...

Grand Lodge

Nik approaches the man taking the report.

Trisane, Ophelia, and I had gotten a tip that we would each find what we were looking for at Lamm's location. We went to look into the place and see if we could find Trisane's nephew and my brother. Once we got there Lamm jumped us. While we searched for the children and my brother we were then confronted by Yargrin, the gnome, and a half-orc friend. We managed to subdue these two but the half-orc was wounded mortally.

There were several children in the building but most fled into the night. We did find the two we brought with us, both suffering from the effects of the drug I've heard of as shiver. A third child was left behind. It seemed he overdosed on the drug. I believe they were either testing or punishing these kids in some way.

As for charges. Their existence is a crime against justice and decency. Besides that though, they obviously were involved in some kind of theft group, using kids for some cruel purpose. They attacked us. They were involved in the death of at least one child and probably in the death of a Varisian woman named Zelara.

I hope Trisane's judgement of these people is correct and that the law here can be trusted.

Jessup scribbles some additional notes. Unfortunatly, he gives Nik a sympathetic look, a just and decent existence are not legal requirements. He smiles, kindly, But we do our best. Any other facts to declare Mr Fralliniz? He will listen to anything else Nik adds, or if Nik is done, look expectantly to Ophelia to give her statement.

Female Human (Varisian) Sorcerer 3

I have nothing more to add, I don't want to give too much information...nothing that can be used against us.

Ophelia tries her best to act passive and friendly, Mr. Imphawke and Fralliniz have already said what happened at the fishery, and I will confirm that. When I was a young child, I was kidnapped and forced to work for Lamm. Luckily, I was able to escape. I know first hand what he does to the children he steals...when I heard these two were looking for their relatives, I wanted to help. I hoped that I could save them, like I was saved.

Hopefully, that will tug on his sympathies enough to overlook my involvement

She pauses a moment before continuing, Aside from the stolen belongings, and injured and dead children, if you need more evidence, I'm sure you could find it at the fishery.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

Jessup scribbles a couple more notes. Anything further? Ok then. We'll get these guys off to a cell and get a team out to the fishery to collect the others. Can't have a bunch of dead bodies laying around. He affixes a seal and orders the prisoners bound for trial. He is about to gather the lockbox when a female guardsman appears from around a corner and comes over.

Jessup, hey there. I am supposed to get these guys up to the chapel to get the kids and then up to the watch captain. she says in a somewhat familiar voice.

OK, do me a favor, and drop this off in the vaults. Jessup says as he affixes a paper atop the lockbox with the wax seal of the Guard.

The guardswoman half turns towards Trisane, nods toward the box Would you mind? I banged up a shoulder in brawl recently. she then turns and heads down a hallway.

In the middle of the hallway, she stops abruptly.
Get the kids and get out of here. Take that, she says nodding to the lockbox, get back to the fishery, clean it up and then get someplace safe.

Do we recognize this woman? Rolls if needed.

Trisane complies, he picks up the lockbox and follows the guardswoman down the hall. He halts when she does and responds to what she says, very clearly confused.

What are you talking about? Who are you!?

What the hell is going on here?

Female Human (Varisian) Sorcerer 3

Check to recognize the voice.
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 12
Knowledge (local, untrained): 1d20 ⇒ 15

It seemed to0 easy, that Jessup was too friendly. Now what did we get mixed up in? Why we should tell us to clean up the fishery? I don't want to go back there.

The guardswoman keeps her head down, and speaks soflty, I am a friend, and I owe you a debt. The city will need you and for right now, you must leave and get someplace safe. The woman points them in the direction they were previously heading and takes a quick step back and slips around another corner without saying a word.

Grand Lodge

Nik sees the reaction from his companions and becomes suspicious.

What new game is this?

Sense Motive:
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

For some reason, Nik trusts what the guardswoman says. There is something familiar and trustworthy about her.

Grand Lodge

Trisane, Ophelia, let's go. Grab the box Ophelia and we'll go get the kids.

Rom, ne vom întoarce la pescuit. Stai aici și asigurați-vă că nu sunt respectate. Întâlnește -ne acolo după ce sunteți sigur nimeni nu este următorul.

Varisian:
Rom, we are going back to the fishery. Stay here and make sure we are not followed. Meet us there after you are sure no one is following.

Nik looks to Trisane to see if his words have swayed him.

Female Human (Varisian) Sorcerer 3

A friend? A debt? What is she talking about? I knew it was a bad idea to go to the guards, what has Trisane got us into?

Ophelia takes the box and follows Nik and Trisane.

Silver Crusade

Male Human (Chelaxian) Ranger (Sable Company Marine/Urban Ranger)/3

Trisane pauses for a few moments in thought after the mysterious woman darts off.

I don't believe this... I thought we'd be safe with the Guard. Who was that? What is she talking about? Where did she go? Why did her voice sound so familiar? Can she be trusted? Too many questions and no time... I better get back to Pellius.

Alright Nik. I don't understand what just happened but if she's right and we're in danger here, then I have to get my nephew to safety. Let's move.

He picks up the pace and heads in the direction the guardswoman pointed.

Grand Lodge

Nik heads towards the chapel to get the kids.

I can't say why but I think we are being saved from making a big mistake here. Trisane, you are a fine man, someone I feel I can trust. These people seem less dedicated to justice though. I am sorry.

Nik turns and picks up his pace.

The citadel includes an area that is dedicated to Abadar, part chapel, part hospital and part bank. You enter and the area seems to be busy for the early morning hours. Acolytes are busy with morning chores and preparing the space.

Nearby Pellius sees you, a big smile spreads across his face and waves from a cot, Uncle Trisane! I knew you'd find me!

In the next cot the young girl lays sleeping, peacefully now, the effects of the drug gone from her system.

Silver Crusade

Male Human (Chelaxian) Ranger (Sable Company Marine/Urban Ranger)/3

Abadar has truly blessed us today.

Trisane smiles back as he rushes over and embraces the boy.

Pellius! You're awake!

He kneels down next to the cot and whispers.

I'm so sorry for what happened. I promise I'll never lose you again...

Trisane pauses for a few moments of joy before it quickly fades. Then he looks back at Nik and Ophelia before whispering again to Pellius.

Can you walk? It's time to take you home.

Female Human (Varisian) Sorcerer 3

Ophelia smiles at the reunion, then glances around the room, looking for anyone watching the kids. She leans towards Nik and whispers,
Nik, tu mai bine apuca fata, avem nevoie să plece repede.

Varisian:

Nik, you better grab the girl, we need to leave quickly.

Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 7

Grand Lodge

Nik grabs the sleeping girl, trying to be as gentle as possible.

Yeah. Let's go.

Nik looks to Trisane to lead the way.

Taking the children, you make your way out of the Citadel. No one stops you, or even pays you that much attention beyond the polite nods to Trisane.

Out in the street the morning sun is rising to the east over the distant mountains. To the west, thick black smoke curls up into the brightening morning sky keeping it dark. Citizens hurry about.

Will you go back by boat or by road?

Ophelia:
You feel a great sense of fear and relief - these are not your emotions though.

M Animal - Raven Familiar to Nik Falliniz

As you step outside, Rom calls out as he flaps noisily upwards, Atâta vreme cât nu începi să mă cheamă momeală, voi urmări partea din spate.

Varisian:
As long as you don't start calling me decoy, I will watch the rear.

Rom heads toward the spires, keeping a far enough distance, not to tempt any lurking imps to jump out for a quick meal. Finding a safe spot to land he waits, and then glides along behind the party, keeping a sharp watch for anyone following Nik.

Empathy:
Hungry, content, alert.

Silver Crusade

Male Human (Chelaxian) Ranger (Sable Company Marine/Urban Ranger)/3

This sort of commotion doesn't seem right.

Trisane pauses outside Citadel Volshyenek and looks to the west.

Nik. Ophelia. Hold up. Something's wrong here. Where's that smoke coming from?

You are currrently in Midland district, further west is the Heights district. Below are more details - spoiler used for space concerns. You can all read this.

City Info:

Midland
When most people think of Korvosa, they think of the
cosmopolitan and friendly district of Midland. Situated on
the leeward side of Citadel Hill, Midland stretches from
the end of Enderin’s Wall south to Gray District and the
Pillar Wall. It rises from sea level to climb the eastern slope
of Citadel Hill, where it ends just below the summit line.
Midland encompasses the wards of High Bridge, Pillar
Hill, Slope, and West Dock. As the home district of both
the Korvosan Guard and Sable Company, Midland has the
fewest gangs and gang battles in the city. Despite that, the
thieves’ guild does a brisk trade in the district thanks to
the disproportionately high number of merchants, banks,
and other commercial and financial concerns.

Citadel Volshyenek: The headquarters of the Korvosan
Guard stands within Midland but belongs to no ward.

High Bridge: Despite its proximity to West Dock, not
every longshoreman and fisherman lives in High Bridge—
roughly half live in the cheaper tenements of lower Pillar
Hill. High Bridge does have its fair share of these hardworking
folk, as well as the families of Korvosan Guards
and Sable Company marines stationed nearby. Like the rest
of the district, though, the ward also houses a wide crosssection
of different kinds of people.

Pillar Hill: The most demographically diverse ward in
Midland—and indeed, the entire city—Pillar Hill houses
both fabulously wealthy merchants in its northern corner,
beneath the shadow of Castle Korvosa, and hard-working
laborers and longshoremen along the Pillar Wall south of
Pillar Hill Boulevard. In addition to its wide distribution
of wealth, the ward also claims variety in the races and
ethnicities of its residents. Every human ethnic group
represented in Korvosa (which is far from all of them)
can claim at least one member in Pillar Hill. In addition,
members of all seven civilized races and tief lings call
Pillar Hill home, as do a few creatures normally considered
“monsters” by humans, though these residents generally
stay to themselves.

Slope: As its name implies, this ward exists on the
eastern slope of Citadel Hill and overlooks West Dock
and the Jeggare River. Despite its proximity to roughand-
tumble West Dock, Slope holds numerous libraries,
museums, and other places of culture. Slope also houses
the third-highest concentration of educated people in
the city, behind only University ward and the Acadamae.
The Losen engineers brought to the city to build the
Great Tower settled in this ward and formed a small
neighborhood with the few Gebbites in the city. As a
result, Korvosa has access to authentic and exotic (for
Varisia) south-Garund foods and fashions.
West Dock: This rugged ward contains no residences.
It does house an extensive number of warehouses, f ish
processing facilities, and the remains of a block dedicated
solely to meatpacking. The prevailing winds push the
meaty stink of the ward southeast, providing Citadel
Volshyenek and much of High Bridge with unending
waves of unpleasantness. Unwelcome but stubborn druids
frequent the docks, proselytizing the evils of civilization
and urging f ishermen and crabbers to release their
catches back into the river. These unwashed scoff laws
frequently cause minor skirmishes when they attempt to
enforce their ideals with more than just words.

The Heights
Standing atop Citadel Hill, the Heights District has a
commanding view of the rest of the city, which its residents
look down on—both figuratively and literally. Nearly all of
Korvosa’s power players reside in the Heights, including
the queen herself. The Heights District holds three wards:
Citadel Crest, Cliffside, and University.

Citadel Crest: Citadel Crest is the wealthiest ward in
Korvosa, with more than a dozen noble families and twice that
many powerful merchants living within. It contains two of
the city’s modern landmarks: the Great Tower and the temple
of Asmodeus. The cost of land in the ward more than doubles
that of the next-most-expensive ward, Cliffside. Violent
crimes rarely occur in the ward, although property crimes,
especially burglary, occur with surprising and unfortunate
regularity. Alone among all the wards in the city, Citadel
Crest has no inns. Visitors instead can stay in one of the three
noble-owned bed and breakfasts scattered throughout.

Cliffside: Lesser nobles and not-quite-as-wealthy
merchants live in Cliffside. Its claims to fame include the
Gatefoot, Kendall Amphitheater, and a section of the Pillar
Wall. Most of the ward’s wealth and political power crams
itself up into the northern section of the ward and along
the cliff that gives the ward its name. Two Sable Company
watchhouses along the cliff and regular patrols from the
Korvosan guard make this a relatively safe ward.

University: The seat of mundane higher learning in the
city, this ward houses the University of Korvosa (thus the
ward’s name), the grand Korvosan Museum, and a number
of smaller schools and cultural locations of various kinds.
Most of the crimes that occur in University fall into the
misdemeanor and petty categories, and it has suffered
from the fewest murders of any similarly aged wards.

Silver Crusade

Male Human (Chelaxian) Ranger (Sable Company Marine/Urban Ranger)/3

Looks like trouble... maybe this is what the guardswoman inside was talking about?

Trisane begins to walk hurriedly to the southeast toward high bridge ushering his nephew alongside him.

This can't be good.. I have to get Pellius back to East Shore as soon as possible.

Whenever he passes the next rushing citizen he asks a hasty question to try and make sense of it all.

Citizen! What's happened out here?

Diplomacy check to gather information.

Diplomacy: 1d20 ⇒ 2

Female Human (Varisian) Sorcerer 3

I don't like this, could this be related or coincidence?

Trisane, forget East Shore, we should do what your friend said, clean up the mess and get someplace safe...once things have settled down, we can get Pellius to East Shore.

Silver Crusade

Male Human (Chelaxian) Ranger (Sable Company Marine/Urban Ranger)/3

Forget East Shore? She must be joking...

Trisane continues to walk swiftly as he replies back to Ophelia.

Are you mad? I have no idea who that woman was or what she was talking about. I'm certainly not taking Pellius toward those burning fires or back to that godforsaken fishery. Things don't seem to be settling down anytime soon and I refuse to put his life in further danger... East Shore is likely the safest place for all of us right now.

Grand Lodge

Nik looks around confused for a second then shakes his head.

The woman gave sound advice about getting out but given that it seems there is further trouble, I'm not sure what we should do here.

I still feel the woman had our best interests but I think heading back to the fishery may not be a priority. I don't know what is going on, but those are not cook fires. This is your city, not mine. Would your family see to the safety of both these children?

Nik looks back to guard station and whistles, calling Rom to him.

Any idea what could cause the trouble?

The dockworker Trisane attempts to get information from gives Trisane a dirty look and keeps going.

Female Human (Varisian) Sorcerer 3

I understand your concern, but we need to stop for a moment and decide what to do. We chose to believe that woman, that we were in danger and needed to leave. If you think she was correct, then we should follow through. If you don't trust her, then why did you leave?

He's not going to like this.

Personally, I have no trust for the guards in this city. You, Trisane, seem like an honorable soldier, but there are too many that look down on citizens that lack wealth, or aren't Chelaxian. I chose to follow you to the Citadel, because I trusted you. I followed you out of the Citadel because I still trust you. You're concerned for your nephew, and I understand. However, if we are all in danger, we need to address that. We need to decide...do we trust the mystery woman or not?

Silver Crusade

Male Human (Chelaxian) Ranger (Sable Company Marine/Urban Ranger)/3

Trisane pauses for a moment to face Ophelia.

Alright look, I'm not trying to ignore what just happened in the Citadel and maybe that woman's right... but maybe she's not. The only thing I know for certain is that I can't concentrate on finding the answer to that question until these children are safely off the streets. They will be safe with my sister, I promise. Please Ophelia, if you really do trust me then I'm begging that you follow me just this one more time...

The conviction and desperation in his voice have become quite apparent.

M Animal - Raven Familiar to Nik Falliniz

Orașul este ca un stup de albine, lovit de o piatră aruncată de un copil, supărat și roire, cu nimic înțeparea ... încă.

Varisian:
The city is like a beehive, hit by a rock tossed by a child, angry and swarming, with nothing to sting...yet.

Trefate sits by Nik's Heel, looking up with his head cocked to the side, he lets out a low whimper Wrrrrrrr.

Grand Lodge

Nik looks around, suddenly alert.

Perception:
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

Female Human (Varisian) Sorcerer 3

Ophelia nods to Trisane, alright, I'll follow, lead the way.

We might be endangering his sister, I hope he knows what he's doing.

She looks back and smiles at Rom, valorifica stup și savurați înțepătura.

Varisian:
Harness the hive and savor the sting.

The streets south of Citadel are quieter, and seem to lack the normal traffic across the High Bridge. Those individuals that are out seem to avoid your group, and once in East Shore you make your way to the Imphawke Estate. It is early enough that most of the family is still asleep, but the staff is preparing a morning meal. News of Pellius' recovery soon has the entire house abuzz, and none more excited than Pavanna.

Pellius explains how he was taken, adding it was no fault of Trisane's. Lamm had thought he was an orphan about to be taken away by the Sable Company. He describes Lamm as a bully and that the old man wanted him to become a street thief, but he had refused. Despite the old man's threats, he would not be a thief. He tells of being put to work, and the cruelty of a half-orc that laughed as he beat them. And that it had been the half-orc that had started giving the other girl, Perinne the drugs. He was unsure why. Several kids went to see Lamm and never returned. He was supposed to be sent to Lamm the following day. Then, the next thing he knew Uncle Trisane and his friends were carrying him away.

You are invited to stay for breakfast and rest at the estate.

Female Human (Varisian) Sorcerer 3

Thank you, for your kindness. Food and rest sound like a good idea.

To Trisane and Nik, she'll say, We should take them up on the offer. We could all use some rest and time to figure out what is going on. Perhaps Lamm's items will give us a clue.

Assuming there's time after we rest up, Ophelia will look at the lockbox and show the others the ledger. I only recognize the Taldane script, not sure what the other is, do you either of you know?

Silver Crusade

Male Human (Chelaxian) Ranger (Sable Company Marine/Urban Ranger)/3

You both are welcome to stay here until we plan our next move. Every Imphawke is a warrior at heart, we'll be safe here. It's the least I can do for all your help in rescuing Pellius.

Trisane tries to make sure his guests are comfortable and introduces them to his family while praising their efforts in aiding him at the fishery. He takes great care to embellish the story of how he heroically battled a monster gator face to face and slew the maniacal half-orc while casually omitting his own follies and the more gruesome details. Also, how Nik befriended a jigsaw shark and laid flat the vicious gnome. Finally, how Ophelia at long last put a just and righteous end to her sinister archenemy, Gaedren Lamm.

While at the estate he will inquire if anyone knows about the ominous black smoke rising in the western part of the city.

Diplomacy to Gather Information: 1d20 ⇒ 19

He will also join the others in examining the lockbox and ledger.

Taking 20 on Disable Device (23) since he gave away the keys to Jessup at the Citadel. Knowledge local to determine if there is anyone in the city who could help discipher the code in the ledger.

I don't know about any codes... maybe there's someone in town who can help.

Knowledge Local: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13

It is Wealday 28 Desnus, 4708 AR. Breakfast is delicious and quickly eaten. With the stresses of the past day and night weighing on each of you, you sleep. It is early afternoon when you are awoken by the Imphawke family.

News has come from the city. King Eodred Arabasti II is dead. Queen Ileosa Arabasti now rules the city.

The ascension of Ileosa to the Crimson Throne has not set well with the common citizens of the city. There are rumors of mobs starting fires, the dockworkers have left their posts, the Acadamae has sealed its gates. The city itself is on the verge of tearing itself apart, if not past the tipping point.

OOC Stuff:
I do use the rolls you provide when applicable; even if I might not relate it specifically to your PC - such as Trisane's Diplomacy roll of 19 - as a high roll, I added details to the description even though it wasn't necessarily part of his action.
For religions of major deities, the Knowledge DC would be 10/given that any PC can take 10; it seems to be by default something everyone knows -which is fine.

Lockbox:

Gaedren has individually wrapped and tied up the following items with twine:

1) narrow teak cigar case inlaid with tiny bits of jade worth
2) 2-pound gold ingot bearing the Cheliax coat of arms
3) miniature gold crown
4) fist-sized scrimshaw carving of a kraken with garnets for eyes
5) silver ring bearing the inscription “For Emmah—the light in my nights,”
6) highly realistic and highly scandalous ivory figurine of two entwined succubi
7) masterwork shuriken
8) adamantine arrowhead
9) Abalone-shell holy symbol of Shelyn
10) tiny glass tube (M)
11) obsidian wand (M)
12) crystalline vial (M)
13) bejeweled brooch with a broken clasp.

Even to an untrained eye, this brooch is obviously the most valuable object in the entire collection. The circular gold brooch depicts a pseudodragon and an imp coiled around each other in an almost yin-yang pattern. The pseudodragon’s eye is an amethyst, while the imp’s eye is an emerald.

I will take 13 Appraise checks; 3 Spellcraft checks for the magical items marked with (M); and a Knowledge Nobility check.

Ophelia also has the small wooden box found with Zellara's head.

Ledger:
The ledger contains a combination of Taldane (common) and another language none of the party reads. Even the bits in Taldane do not make sense. You would be able to recognize it/and have been told that it is a code.
Trisane - You know that many groups use codes, including undercover members of the Sable Company. Unfortunately, the only people that might be able to decode this are people you wouldn't trust with whatever information they may find.

Female Human (Varisian) Sorcerer 3

Queen Ileosa:

Would a Knowledge (nobility) roll help to understand the frustration at the Queen's rise?

Knowledge (nobility): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Ophelia examines the items from the lockbox. She casts a spell and takes a closer look at several of the items.

Spellcraft (#10): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Spellcraft (#11): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Spellcraft (#12): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

After she examines the items from the lockbox, Ophelia remembers she has the small box tucked away and presents that as well.

Knowledge (nobility): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

Opehila -

Queen Ileosa:
Ileosa has made her contempt for the "backwater outpost" city well known. She is a young woman, who seduced the king, and became queen. (think Anna Nicole Smith - only arrogant and not as likable) In addition her influence on the king has been costly to the city coffers.

Magic Items:
Using detect magic you also realize it is what is in the wooden box that was the magical aura you detected on the hatbox. As you present it, you once again feel a sense of concern; not your emotion.
You are able to identify the one oil as Oil of keen edge, and the wand as a wand of magic missile (23 Charges); you are not able to identify the crytal vial's contents.

Female Human (Varisian) Sorcerer 3

Ophelia holds the wooden box out, someone take this, I'm...it feels...off

Whatever that is, it gives me the creeps. I thought it was from...her head, but its this thing.

She returns the crystal vial to the collection, I'm not certain what this one is. Holding the other two up, she'll explain, this is an oil of keen edge, and this one is a magic missile wand.

Ophelia holds out the small wooden box that was found with Zellara's severed head.

Ophelia:
You have sense of frustration, hurt and annoyed impatience from the box contents.

Silver Crusade

Male Human (Chelaxian) Ranger (Sable Company Marine/Urban Ranger)/3

The oil and the adamantine arrow could be useful.. I'll need a new crossbow of course.

What's in the box?

Trisane takes the wooden box curiously and opens it.

Take 20 on DD (23) if needed.

Inside are a familiar sight, harrow cards. Hand-painted images decorated with frames gilt in silver, sparkle and flash. Despite the worn condition of the card backs, the images on the faces are so vibrant they seem to move when viewed out of the corner of the eye. The cards are identical to the "invitations" sent by Zellara.

Female Human (Varisian) Sorcerer 3

Ophelia looks at the cards, then back to Trisane, Do you feel that?

Please tell me you feel that too? I'm not going crazy, am I?

Silver Crusade

Male Human (Chelaxian) Ranger (Sable Company Marine/Urban Ranger)/3

What in the world...

Trisane looks over to Ophelia with sudden concern.

Yeah... I feel something too.

Feeling slightly agitated, he then quickly hands the box over to Nik.

Nik, you're into this harrow stuff right? What do you make of it?

Grand Lodge

Nik takes a hold of the box and looks at it curiously.

It looks like Zellara's deck. Makes sense he would keep it as a trophy but...

Nik pauses in thought.

Something is wrong.

Nik reaches into his shirt and clutches the signs of his faith. He begins a prayer and traces faint runes in the air as he closes his eyes. He opens them suddenly and looks at the cards, hoping not to see the aura he suspects is there.

Detect Undead spell

Nik:

Detect Undead:

Game mechanics:
The deck is actually an item and not a creature so detect undead would not work on it per se. Nik would know this technicality, so the cards aren't going to jump up and attack/possess anyone.
Nik does not see an undead aura, but does get a sense of eagerness and excitement from the cards.

House ruling though -
You get a sense of a spirit/soul within the cards. You are not detecting undead as a creature!

Grand Lodge

Nik begins shuffling the deck and looks around for a table and chairs.

Trisane, I know you do not believe in such things but I think we are meant to use this to receive a message. Let's sit.

Once the three are seated around a table, Nik sets the deck down and breathes deeply.

Let's see if I can remember how this goes...

Nik draws the first card, The Teamster. He places this to his left leaving room for other cards. The first is followed by The Mute Hag and The Courtesan. These two he places in order next to the first.

These are followed further by The Midwife, The Sickness, and The Theatre. And finally The Winged Serpent, The Wanderer, and The Vision. Nik shakes his head for a second in thought.

Let's see, I remember the cards to the left are the past, then the present, and finally the future. The teamster seems to show we have some kind of drive in our past, probably our reason for coming together. While the Midwife is a care giver but I think this means we have both succeeded and failed at that role. I know I have in my past. The Winged Serpent I remember means flight. One of us is running from out past, or maybe we all are in some way.

Nik pauses to think before he continues.

Well, that wasn't so hard.

Next our present. The Mute Hag is silent. Here I think we have some luck, our recent situation may be masked and kept silent by whatever trouble these fires signify. The Sickness seems almost literal here, like we will have to overcome something, or one of us is already fighting something. Then we have The Wanderer, I think we need to be vigilant about becoming lost.

Nik then runs his hand across the last row of cards.

Now for the future. Love seems to be in the air for us, or at least that is what I believe The Courtesan means. Or maybe some deep friendship? The Theatre shows that we may need to do some kind of performance some time soon, or we need to be on the watch for another doing the same.

Nik picks up the last card and sighs.

I know this one though. I think we all feel it. Shortly we will all be given a vision of the future. And it is far from pleasant.

Nik lays the card down.

I really hope I got some of that wrong. It sounds less than fun.
