my character idea is an ranger elf

or a wizard

Since your new to gaming in general, I might suggest the Ranger over the Wizard. The wizard is a bit more vulnerable, and requires a lot more work to play effectively.

Either way, here is a good source that you can look to for help on building an effective character: Guide to the Class Guides

There are several different types of Rangers, from an Archer, Two-Weapon, Two-Handed, and the Switch Hitter. The guides do a good job of showing you how to build an effective char.

So as we discussed via text messaging, we'll be using high fantasy 20 point buy. You can begin building your character using the Character Creation Outline as a guide.

This message board has plenty of text formatting options that you can use. Click the How to format your text to see the examples.

To roll your starting money. Use the dice roller... For example, the Ranger you are creating uses 5d6 x 10gp for starting money. So you type {dice=Starting Money}5d6{/dice} replacing the {} with [] where appropriate.

It comes out looking like this Starting Money: 5d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 6, 3, 1) = 16

Then you can click "Preview" and you can see the dice roll. For example, my preview shows 16.. so 16x10gp means my starting money would be 160gp.

Once you're ready to start looking for equipment go ahead and roll your starting gold here.

Let me know if you have any questions.

What do you want us to use for character sheets?

I found a Google doc template, Epizephyrii's Pathfinder Character Sheet By Epizephyrii:

https://drive.google.com/previewtemplate?id=0AjfaolOnvs6gdEZNenNDdVBTSDBPME 04S1JranRSSEE&mode=public

The sheet will automate a lot of the rules for you, and you can share it on your Google Drive so that Grecko can have a look at it when he needs to.

Are we to choose a Background Trait?

My character idea is a male human Sorcerer of Maestro bloodline (bloodline explanation is entirely unknown to him). He comes from the impoverished side of the Korvosan population, but he makes his living among the wealthy, by performing (singing or musician - undecided) in well-to-do establishments in the affluent parts of Korvosa. He's lived in Korvosa all his life, yet he finds the by-the-rules attitude of Korvosa rather stifling. He's made some money on the side doing small tasks for some of the organized crime in Korvosa. He is probably chaotic-good or neutral good, and doesn't see too much harm in a little criminal activity to make ends meet, in particular if it's at the expense of the wealthy, who he both admires, and is also disgusted by. His background trait would be something along the lines of the "Unhappy Childhood" - as a teenager, he had done some work for Gaedren Lamm, but was double-crossed; perhaps was promised payment, position, or leniency upon his family, but was betrayed by Gaedren; payment stolen, he or his family beaten and left for dead by Gaedren's thugs. He's left that behind him now, living his life day to day, trying to earn a fair living and staying away from Gaedren's influence by laying low, self-training in his profession for perfroming (I know, conflicts with "laying low")... but something will draw out his buried need for vengeance... He'd have either the +1 Reflex save from the tortured background, or the +2 Spellcraft check from the Framed background (from the self-training aspect for earning a living, and honing his sorcery skills that have only recently manifested).

That sounds great. For trait's you're allowed two traits as long as they are from separate categories.. for example.. you can pick a "campaign" trait from the book and another from the "combat" traits.

Now I know you talked a lot about blasting.. a trait I might recommend would be Magical Lineage. which allows you to add metamagic to 1 particular spell at a lower spell slot cost.

Great if you plan on using metamagic on a main spell.

Go ahead and look over the traits and see what you like.
------
As for the Google Doc Template.. I think that is a good solution. That way I can look over your guy's sheets and make suggestions

When we get down to playing the char's we will add a small snippet that show's our current status next to our names for quick reference.

Once you've decided on a name for your Character, go ahead and make an Alias with your characters name. When we start play, you will be posting as that character. If you noticed my name is GM Grecko here, but it's the alias of the Dr Grecko that I typically use on this site.

There is a drop-down for easily selecting who you post as once you make an alias.

Starting Money: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 3) = 9 x10

Starting Money: 5d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 4, 5, 2) = 21

Pretty good rolls..

So, 90gp for peppy and 210g for TDA

Given that it will just be you two, I'll most likely be playing an NPC along side you guys. Probably a battle cleric. It should give you guys a little extra survivability.

Again, if you have someone you think might want to join in, bring em along for the ride.

Stats:

I've created an alias for the Battle Cleric I will be using as an NPC along side you guys.

If you haven't already done so, make yourself an alias with your chars name... If you don't know where to do that: Click on the My Account link and scroll down to the Message Board Aliases link. Give him a name and an appropriate picture, and then edit his profile to include some minor information. (We'll be using the Google Drive sheets for the main info)

Most importantly, in the "Class/Race" option: Create a spoiler tag with your characters current status. HP.. AC.. Will/Reflex/Fort saves.. Anything with a daily limit.. Ammunition for arrows... ect..

Here's how it will look.. Again replace {} with [].

{spoiler=Status} HP 10/10; Channel 3/3; AC 18; Will 7; Ref 2;{/spoiler}

I haven't finished my char so not all of my info is in there yet. But you'll notice that the spoiler tag will be in every post he makes. Try to keep them as up to date as possible.

Ok, so I finished making up Loris Rakain. (Although I need to transfer his sheet over to the google docs sheet yet)

Take a look at his profile; You should notice that in the "Race" category, there is a spoiler tag for Status. I want you guys to do the same. This shall be where you keep track of daily usage items and hit points. For example, I can channel Energy 4 times a day as well as use my enlarge ability 5 times a day.

You can add anything you feel needs to be tracked inside that spoiler.. Arrows, Spells Per Day, ect..

-------------

In the "Class / Levels" section.. Add another Spoiler tag with your Current Stats.. I have AC, Touch AC, Flat Footed AC, All three saves, My initiative modifier, and perception bonus.

At minimum I'll want these to be displayed here, as I will from time to time roll for you in some instances.

Please keep these as up to date as possible. For instance.. Right now, you should notice my AC is 16.. However, I have a shield that will increase it to 17 when I equip it. When I do, I will make a change to the profile so it is reflected in future posts.

As a reminder, You will need to create a back-story that involves some sort of wrongdoing towards you by Gaedren Lamm. Now you can go with one of the campaign backgrounds listed in the players guide, or you can create your own, as I did with Loris. If you use the players guide background, you can also select the trait associated with it. Otherwise, be reminded that you are allowed two traits from two different categories.

Check out Loris's profile page again and you can read up on his background if you like. Your characters won't know the background, but it's always fun to read them.

Oh and go ahead and place your background info in the "About" box. Spoiler tags aren't required here, but it helps keep things organized.

If you both are ready to go, I'll go ahead and get things rolling. Please reply here if you are ready to go or if you have more questions.

Wisepeppy will still need to fill out the profile page of Ryder Koss with those stat spoilers as well as your background.. But I have what I need to get us started.

Ralof, You still need to select a Favored Enemy... You will get bonuses against that type of enemy.

When we begin I'll start posting on the Gameplay tab. When posting on the gameplay tab, try to keep yourself in character as much as possible. If you need to say something out of character, please use the OOC tag, which works similar to the spoiler tag. just a simple {ooc}This is my out of character message{/ooc}

Out of Char Example:
My spell lasts 3 rounds how many rounds do I have left?

If you have more than just a simple question, post it back here on the discussion page.

When you are talking use the Bold font {B}"My Character is Talking!"{/b}
Loris Says: "Damn, why you so big?"

When you are having an Inner conversation to yourself use italics {i}Inner dialog{/i}
Loris thinks to himself, 'I probably shouldn't have said that'

For everything else try to use regular font

Ok, I'll be making the initial post shortly, I need you to both think of what you're currently doing. (It is currently just around afternoon)

There is a map on the first page of the players guide. Think about where you are in the city (don't really care where as long as it's not the Castle or anywhere in Old Korvosa)

Think about what your characters are doing at this moment. You could be practicing your Archery skills, eating at a tavern (or drinking if you're an early drinker), participating in a Harrow reading, in the case of Ryder, practicing Harrow readings... Anything you want really.

so how do i roll?

Male Undead Wizard 10

I understand you're relatively new to pathfinder and gaming in general, so here's the rundown of whats happening with the thief and what you can do about it.

The thief is human, which would normally mean 30ft movement, however, he's also size small for being a child, bringing his movement down to 20ft.

You yourself have a 20ft. movement due to wearing medium armor.

Normally, a round consists of a Move Action, and a Standard Action. (there are other actions I wont get into just yet)

You can take a move action in place of a standard action, otherwise known as a "Double Move". So instead of moving just 20ft, you could move 40ft.

Now the thief is only 20ft away, and since you can catch him with just a single move action, you have a Standard action with which you can do something to him.

Some of your Options:
1)Grapple - Basically trying to grab him to prevent him from running away. You would roll your CMB against the kinds CMD (look at your sheet for your CMB bonus)

2)Attack - You can try to punch the kid.. cut him with your great-sword. This is probably a little overkill, after all he's just a child. But, punching him is Non-Leathal damage so it's a little better than just killing him.

3)Don't move and shoot with your bow. (bad idea again for the fact that you could kill him)

FYI - I added a spoiler to the "About Ryder Koss" section that describes the Harrow-Draw part of my Harrowed feat. I noted the suit-to-dice-roll assignments, and I put them in the standard order as they appear on our character sheets: Str,Dex,Con,Int,Wis,Cha. This puts Dex and Con in opposite order from how they appear in the Harrowed feat description, but I figure this will be easier to keep track of. I suspect the order shown in the Feat description was an oversight.

ok, so peppy you about ready to join us in gameplay?

I added a spoiler to Ryder's "About" section that's just a little blurb about his performance skill, which is a combination of percussion and singing put together with a little comedic flair. I don't attest that Ryder is skilled at percussion, singing, AND comedy. By themselves, Ryder's ability in each of these isn't anything worth talking about. It's not my intent to try and get three performance skills for one, but rather to have a performance skill that's an "act", which happens to involve several different aspects. ...cool?

Grecko... when we post in gameplay... 1st or 3rd person? "I enter the room"... or "Ryder enters the room"?

Whatever you're more comfortable with.. I've been using 3rd person mostly.

Understand, that while it would be great to all get together for an extended time period, our schedules will not always align to do so. That's why I suggested this format. That way, when we have the time, we can continue posting.

What I would prefer, is that at a minimum, at least once a day, we log on and post our actions.

like i mean like if we all have a free day during the weekend we come on here and we try and post a bit more, but like the other time we just post normaly

It'll be difficult to know when we all have the same free day. Like this weekend I was quite busy for most of it.

Either way, I'll try to post most of my days posts earlier in the day to give you both time later in the day to post your actions. Then if I have time later in the day I'll post a bit more.

Sounds good. I'll do my best to get a post a day done.

One thing that can help us all speed things along is incorporating multiple actions into a single post.

Basically, go ahead make an assumption of what is going to happen, and add a spoiler tag detailing what you would do in that event.

For example, I made a post detailing the shop's design. Then instead of waiting for someone to post that they go inside, I made an assumption spoiler tag detailing what would happen if someone did go inside. I also made the assumption someone would see the note on the table.

Ryder's post where he clears his throat if not noticed is a good example of playing on those assumptions, because you assumed if no-one saw you, your action would be to clear your throat, but even that can go further, you could add a spoiler tag assuming that someone may ask who you are, and add your responses to that event.

That's the big difference when it comes to play-by-post vs in person gaming, making assumptions of different courses of actions in order to increase the speed of gameplay.

This will actually be critical come combat time. If for example Ryder makes a post saying he shoots his crossbow at an enemy. Instead of waiting for me tell you whether he's dead or alive. Ralof would make a two part post.. first part detailing what he'd do if that enemy is still alive, the second what he'd do if the enemy is dead.

Then, when I make my response, I'll use the appropriate action spoiler based on what happens

Make sense? or am I just being confusing?

Got it.

Why are the times on the posts so messed up? I'd kinda like to know when you guys are posting...

I have no idea, I haven't noticed any times on the posting being messed up.

I will be posting both early in the morning and also during the evening. The times may vary, but I'm looking for before noon, and after 10pm.

So, Be sure to add the Harrow Point thing to your chars status tags. In addition, add a non-lethal damage tracker next to hit points. Something like this | 10/10 HP - 0 NL |

Non-Lethal damage is just that.. damage that doesn't actually kill you. However.. if your Non-Lethal damage + your Lethal damage is greater than your total HP, you go unconscious. Read More here: Non Lethal

Note that you can make your normal weapon do non-lethal damage simply by taking a -4 to your roll.. You never know when you need to knock someone unconscious rather than kill them.

For Ryder, if you could add your perception bonus to your stats spoiler that would be helpful.. I tend to roll perceptions for you guys rather than wait for your next posts.
