"Not sure what that is..." Shirzon answers, eyeing the human-faced snake thing. She raises an eyebrow at Calden's seemingly unconsciously uttered claim to be able to leap across the chasm. Giving a look, Shirzon figures she could probably make it too, if she had a good start. "As long as it leaves us alone, let's ignore it and try to get across. Slim chance of that, I'm guessing.

"Anyway, it looks like the Razmiri used this rope to get across - let me check it out and see if it's safe." Shirzon examines the rope stretching across the pit, as well as the pitons in the wall next to them. She looks for any tampering, planning to test out its safety.

I want to examine the piton-and-rope setup for traps and/or sabotage. If I don't find anything, I'll test the rope to see if it holds.

Merephel is startled when the snake creature arrives. True to her usual self, she grins at the new arrival.

"Hello friend! How are you this fine day?"

She puts her mace in her belt, and shows her empty hand. She takes a single, non-threatening step in it's direction.

Having seen a city covered in molten gold, and gigantic skeletal dragons, Korech was convinced he would never be astonished by anything again in his life.

WHAT THE HELL IS THAT??????

Almost dropping his bow, he takes an involuntary step back from the snake, despairing.

"Do we have to kill that too? Why does everything be mean?"

He then sees Merephel try and make friends with the snake, in a similar manner to how Anarma taught him to befriend the wild animals of Fangwood. This strikes him as hilarious and he slaps a hand over his mouth at the strangeness of the situation.

After recovering, he looks at the others.

"Climb across? I go last because I can shoot if someone falls."

Council of Thieves Maps

Shirzon closely examines both the rope and the pitons, but she breathes a sigh of relief as she discovers no trap. She's partially sure that the rope would be able to sustain a single climber. To gain a complete certainty, however, she tests the rope herself, and finds out that her previous impression is confirmed by that examination.

As a result, she starts climbing across the rope, quickly followed by Merephel, while Korech and Calden discuss about which of them should go last.

In the meantime, the slithering, humanoid-faced snake slithers in its bed of gold, and appears to be slowly getting closer to the platform. No one is able to assess with complete certainty whether the snake would be able to attack someone on the platform.

If it's alright, I'm going to try to jump the gap, since my acrobatics is much higher than my climb skill.

Shirzon eyes the gap and the rope, trusting the solidity of the latter but not her ability to shimmy across it. Council of Thieves Maps

The giant snake below seems to be waiting for someone to fall in the bed of gold, slithering frantically.

You all make it across the rope or jumping, reaching the northern platform. The snake, clearly disappointed because no one fell in its pit of gold coins, starts climbing the platform’s surface in an attempt to reach you.

In the meantime, the slithering, humanoid-faced snake slithers in its bed of gold, and appears to be slowly getting closer to the platform. No one is able to assess with complete certainty whether the snake would be able to attack someone on the platform. Despite not being a skilled climber, the slithering snake manages to get halfway through the vertical surface: it’s now very close to you.

Suddenly, the door in front of you slams open: behind it, a priest of Razmir, wearing white robes and an iron mask, stands astonished in front of you. “Dammit, they’re here! Brace yourselves!"

The large room beyond the door has high, arched ceilings and a floor made of simple white tiles. Four statues frame the room, two of them recessed in wide alcoves along the south wall and two more standing against the north wall. The statues in the southern alcoves are carved from granite polished as smooth as glass. Both statues depict the same man, tall and regal with a full head of windblown hair. They are both completely nude, and each statue has one hand crossed behind its back while the other hand points toward its twin. When viewed from the front, the statues look like a mirror image of the same person. The two statues against the north wall are sculpted from lightly veined marble and depict two different women, nude to the waist and draped with robes from the waist down. The one to the east scowls and points accusingly at a plain wooden door in the north wall. The one to the west smiles and regards the door with a curious expression.

There’s another cultist in the alcove to the east. As soon as he gets alerted by his companion, the priest quickly rushes to his side, rapier in hand and shield ready.

Calden isn't surprised by the sight of the Razmiran, but he spends a bit too much time looking back at the serpent. "We don't want to be caught between them. Hurry!" He tries to make his way past the cultist blocking the entrance, shoving him out of the way if he has to.

If #1 still stands when my turn comes up:

"Move!" Calden bites at the cultists, giving him a large push away from the door. He then follows to get into the room.

Shirzon ducks through the doorway, slipping between the pair of Razmir's faithful. Once behind the cultist, she quickly turns and viciously whips her mace at his back. She hits the Razmir’s faithful right behind his neck, and hears something cracking. The cultists screams in pain and turns to face her, but before he can do anything at all, Korech fires a few arrows at him. Many miss their target, but the last one hits the cultist right in his chest, piercing the cultist’s heart. With a grin of satisfaction, Korech steps forward.

In the meantime Merephel casts a spell on the second Razmir’s faithful, luring him into kissing her. He slowly removes his mask, and although a little hesitantly, he moves closer to Merephel and he puts his lips on hers.

Suddenly, someone appears behind Shirzon. It’s a herald of Razmir, wielding an ornate rapier in one hand and a shield in the other one. The herald takes advantage of Shirzon’s surprise to try and stab her at her back. But Shirzon’s surprise was just a trick to lure her foe to attack with confidence. Once she hears the attack, Shirzon dodges and although he cannot avoid being hit, she has prevented the rapier from piercing her heart.

Shirzon takes 9 points of damage. Uncanny dodge proved very useful here!

Right after, Calden tries to push the cultist away, but although he’s under the effects of Merephel’s spell, the Razmiri faithful resists Calden’s attempt. Calden’s violent behavior also has the effect to give the cultist another chance to break free from Merephel’s mind control, but the lad’s will is weak and he fails.

---

As the battle progresses, the giant humanoid-faced snake has climbed the platform. As soon as it reaches the platform, it releases a powerful stroke of electrical energy in a long line in front of it.

Merephel and Shirzon need to attempt a DC 16 Reflex save to halve the damage from the lighting bolt, which would normally deal 18 points of damage.

The priest of Razmir manages to jump away and partially avoid the lightning bolt. Still under Merephel’s suggestion, he continues to kiss the girl.

In the meantime, Merephel kisses the priest with simulated passion, trying to keep him busy. Then she hits him with her mace, catching him by surprise.

Merephel failed her Reflex Save and takes 16 points of electricity damage.

The herald of Razmir, realizing that her ability to hit her enemies’ vital spots is useless against Shirzon, steps to her left in order to get away from another possible lightning bolt and tries to attack the half-orc with both her rapier and shield. Shirzon is ready though, and she dodges both the attacks with uncanny nimbleness.

Calden steps into the room using his acrobatic moves and then hits the Priest of Razmir with a firm kick in the ribs. The priest produces a choked scream and falls down.

The large snake is now on the platform. Korech failed to hit it, and now it’s time for the serpent to retaliate. The snake moves closer to Korech and attacks him: the snake bites the half-orc in his arm, but fortunately Korech reacts quickly to the shock and dodges the creature’s dangerous sting.

Shirzon steps around the herald, moving with her as they exchange attacks. Ducking and sidestepping the herald's blows, she puts in two swings herself in a whirlwind of steel. As she lashes out, she calls to Merephel and Korech, "What even is that snake thing?! Watch out for that lightning!" she advises, unhelpfully.

Calden start to sounds panicked. "What are you still doing there. Get in here, so I can close the door!" He waits by the door, to close it after everyone is inside.

As I understood, Merephel took at 5 foot step inside the room to cast without provoking. That leaves just Korech, who has delayed and should be able to get inside with a withdraw action, or a move and taking an AoO. I really think that shutting the snake out now is better than trying to engage both enemies at once.

If I still have a move action after closing the door, I'd like to move to the Herald in a flanking position with Shirzon.

Shirzon continues her assault on the herald, managing to press her enemy and forcing her to make some defensive mistakes which she takes advantage of hitting the herald with two quick strikes.

In the meantime, Merephel steps into the room. Korech follows her soon thereafter, and as soon as both of them are in the room, Calden closes the door behind them before moving to give Shirzon a flanking. Before he can reach the herald, though, she attacks Shirzon twice, shouting in frustration as she sees the half-orc confidently deflecting, dodging or parrying her attacks. “Lady Iramine! They’re coming! I cannot hold them back for long!” she screams desperately, foreseeing her defeat now that all of the Heroes of Kassen are in the room.

From the other side of the door Calden just closed, in the meantime, you can hear the hissing scream of the giant snake. Just when you would have expected it to launch itself at the door in an attempt to break it, you have the impression to hear the creature slither back.

Now that the Heroes of Kassen are together again, facing a single opponent and with the large snake behind a closed door and far from them, they have time to plan their actions.

The herald doesn't seem to be willing to surrender and keeps calling to her boss. "Iramine, they got the best of us! I can't hold them for long!" In the meantime, Shirzon hits the herald with her mace, taking advantage of Calden's position in order to hit a critical spot.

When Korech orders her to surrender, the herald laughs fanatically and attacks Shirzon. This is more than Korech can bear. He shoots a brutal volley of arrows, hitting the herald in several vital spots and causing her to collapse to the floor, dead.

In the meantime, no sound comes from the other side of the door where the large snake was; perhaps, it has returned to his golden pit. Now, just one door stands between the Heroes of Kassen and the woman who caused their lives to change forever, sending her cultists to Kassen in order to steal Kassen's and Asar's amulet shards. She who caused them to become heroes stands behind the next door. They had been tracking her for weeks, infiltrated her temple in Tamran, revealed her dark schemes, followed her on the Isle of Terror, chased her in the City of Golden Death...and now the time for the final confrontation has come.

Korech snarls as he turns away from the pincushion that was once a herald of Razmir. Gathering some of his arrows, he looks to the others.

Old Deadeye stand with me so that I can help my community and my friends.

"This maybe last fight. Iramine get past dragon and statues and lizards and everything else. I think she be very tough. But we do this. Calden come back from the other side for this. And we can go home to Kassen. See Arnama and Asina and Dimira and family and everyone else. When we go to Crypt, every test they give us about work together. And we learn work together, like family I not have. I love you all; and we can win this. And no more dying!"

Korech nocks an arrow and stares at the door, waiting for the others.

Male LG Human (Nirmathi) Monk 6

Once the herald has been dealt with and it's clear that the snake poses no immediate threat, Calden takes a few moment for himself. Indeed, this is it. To hell and back, to deal with the cult, and their mysterious plan.

Once he's centered, he opens his eyes and joins Korech. "That's true. She's extremely experienced, as we've heard mention. Still, we can be confident. We braved the dangers of the Isle with just the four of us. She brought three score of her followers, and she's lost most of them just to get here. We've been a good team, and we can defeat her if we continue to do do."

At the end of his speech, he snickers. "You know, when we traveled to the island here, I told you about the story, of how I might be related to Kassen? I thought back then that it would have been Kassen's blood that brought me here, somehow. That it was destined...? I just realized that I don't really have Kassen's blood running through my veins anymore." He smiles. "Or maybe I do. It probably doesn't matter. It's just a coincidence, if it's even true..."

He rubs his hands together to summon warmth and energy for the coming fight, then thinks of something and touches Merephel gently on the arm. "I said earlier that I felt all right. That's true mostly, but I'd be lying if I said my body was already as strong as it was earlier. If you have anything that might help me in the coming fight, to protect me or strengthen me, that would be most welcome. We shouldn't hold anything back for this fight." I promised Dimi I'd return. I have to make it out alive...

I checked our party scroll collection on your character sheet, Meph. The scroll of Ancestral Gift might be a nice one for you. Who knows, maybe you're related to someone special as well. :)
For me, I could use a Protection from Evil (scroll), and maybe the Bear's Endurance as well if you can spare it. Finally, could I nab one of Merephel's potions of CLW? Just in case...
Shirzon, maybe you could try to cast the scroll of Blur on yourself with Use Magic Device?

Yes Calden, I was actually saving that scroll for this very fight! Please do take one of the potions; the same for anyone who wants them. Merephel can always heal herself with other means.

Merephel stands at the ready, unshed tears in her eyes.

"You are all my family. I don't care about the riches of the Golden City. I don't care about the Cult of Razmir. I don't care about the Pathfinders. I care about the three of you. We are going to make it through, and no matter what, the survival of my family is most important."

She hugs everyone in turn, starting with Calden at her left. Then she moves to Shirzon, and embraces her warmly. Lastly, she moves to Korech and embraces him as well.

"I will do my damndest to protect you three. Your only job is to stop this heretic so we can get out of here. Don't worry about yourselves; I will be watching over you!"

She begins casting spells to protect her allies, saving herself for the last.

"Let's go home."

I have 2 Shield of Faith, and haven't used my Pearl today. So I can get a third Shield of Faith for someone, or Bless the party. That Bear's Endurance goes to Calden, and one of the two Protection from Evil. I have a potion of Protection from Chaos as well, and will be casting both the Ancestral Gift and Summon Ancestral Guardian spells. It may be worth sending in a Twine Double to see what they are up to, and hopefully they will use a spell or two on it, and waste them. I also have a Potion of Blur up for grabs.

Giuseppe, here is a list of what I'm casting so far, and I'll post the master list in the discussion once I've gotten everyone's feedback:
Summon Ancestral Guardian, Ancestral Gift, Bear's Endurance, and 2 each of Shield of Faith and Protection from Evil spells.

Shirzon grins at her friends. "Iramine doesn't stand a chance against the four of us. It still feels strange, when I think about how different things are from not that long ago, when we were all still in Kassen. And while we're still tangled up in that history, Meph is right. This is about us now. I - I lo-" Shirzon stops, the word catching uncomfortably in her mouth. She averts her eyes and her slouch deepens as she finishes her sentence, "I love you all, too. Now let's do this!"

I think I would benefit most from a protection from evil (which won't stack with shield of faith). Bless would also be good! I think Calden might need the most protection right now, so the potion of blur can go to him (it looks like it's a potion, not a scroll). I'll re-cast my wand of shield, too.

Use Magic Device: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26

Ah, you're right that it's a potion. On the usage of the pearl: We have 2x Shield of Faith and 2x Protection from Evil. That means you could re-cast the Bless with the pearl; the +1 to hit would do the most good, I think.

Buff list for Calden: Bear's Endurance (Merephel), Protection from Evil (scroll), Blur (potion)

Council of Thieves Maps

Merephel gather her companions around her and starts to sing a melodious prayer to Shelyn as the other heroes drinks potions and listen to her. First off, she casts some enhancing and protective spells on them, then she pulls out of her case two scrolls Captain Walren gave to her long ago, when they helped the dwarf to rebuild his river barge. Merephel reads the first one, a scroll of ancestral gift she identified before.

A ghostly manifestation of a young, powerfully built man appears before her, bearing a weapon in its hands.

Meph, you have to choose which type of weapon you want and which weapon special ability the magic glaive wielded by your ancestor has.

Right after, Merephel reads Captain Walren's second scroll, a scroll of summon ancestral guardian. The spirits of two of Merephel's ancestors, a man and a woman, manifest in the mortal world, ready to attack the priestess' enemies. Each wields a spiritual weapon.

Here again, you have to choose which type weapon your ancestors wield.

Calden begins feeling a bit apprehensive, as Merephel is casting the spells to protect him. Didn't I say that I should rely on myself, that I don't need to rely on all of the equipment I just lost? Are all of these spells so much different? No, that's the wrong way to think. I rely in myself, but there have been Masters before, and they relied on the teaching, guidance and help of others. I must look out for myself, but that does not mean that I will turn down aid. Especially when given by such close friends.

He takes a few steady breaths, and puts an arm on Merephel's shoulder again. "Thanks, Meph. It's good knowing that you'll look out for us."

Steeling himself against whatever may come and summoning all the courage he can muster, Calden puts a hand upon the door handle. "Ready?"

"Yes, for Kassen."

And as Calden says the words, to his suprise the image of Ekat Kassen pops in his mind, not the image of the village that he had always known as home.

Council of Thieves Maps

Your heart full of courage and both your body and mind made stronger by Merephel’s spells, you enter the last room of the Tabernacle of the Jewel of Everlasting Gold. As soon as you enter the room, you immediately see a beautiful elf woman. She had been waiting for you, apparently. This chamber has high, vaulted ceilings, a simple stone floor, and unadorned granite walls. A large, 15-foot-square raised dais occupies the center of the room. In the middle of the dais rests a gray stone block with a grasping hand carved from the same stone rising from the center of the block. The hand is currently empty. The room is almost unbearably hot and entering is much like walking into a furnace.

Iramine holds the Jewel of Everlasting Gold in her hands. The elf stands to the west of the dais. She is also wearing the key to Xin-Grafar, the amulet she pieced together using the three fragments that she, Kassen, and Asar originally found and used to gain access to the city centuries ago. The amulet is a simple, unadorned, green agate on a silver chain that glows very faintly with a subdued blue light. In addition, an elven curve blade to her side and her whole person seems to radiate magic. She smiles as soon as she sees you.

So here you are. Such a shame it has to end this way” she says with a supernatural, beautiful and melodious voice. A voice that would have tricked you into judging her innocent of whatever crime she’s been accused of, shouldn’t you know with certainty what she’s up for in that room…and what that jewel she holds in her hands is.

« Encounter: "The Chamber of the Jewel" | Round I | Hazard : Iramine | Current Map Picture: The Jewel Repository | Soundtrack: Heart of Courage – Two Steps from Hell »

Iramine shakes her head, as though having to attack you caused her almost physical pain. Then she smirks, though, and looks up to you: “You won’t stop me…” she says in a whisper. Her voice has the same tone of innocence as before but now it is followed by a series of quick and complex arcane words and gestures as the elf calls on her magic powers. Abruptly, when she stops muttering her elven words, a web appears in the room, entangling you! It’s a many-layered mass of strong, sticky strands. These strands trap those caught in them. The strands are similar to spiderwebs but far larger and tougher. These masses are anchored to the two diametrically opposed walls of the room.

Everyone must make a DC 15 Reflex save. If this save succeeds, the creature is inside the web but is otherwise unaffected. If the save fails, the creature gains the grappled condition, but can break free by making a combat maneuver check or Escape Artist check as a standard action against DC 15. The entire area of the web is considered difficult terrain. Anyone moving through the webs must make a combat maneuver check or Escape Artist check as part of their move action, with a DC equal to the spell's DC. Creatures that fail lose their movement and become grappled in the first square of webbing that they enter.
If you have at least 5 feet of web between you and an opponent, it provides cover. If you have at least 20 feet of web between you, it provides total cover.
The strands of a web spell are flammable. A flaming weapon can slash them away as easily as a hand brushes away cobwebs. Any fire can set the webs alight and burn away one 5-foot square in 1 round. All creatures within flaming webs take 2d4 points of fire damage from the flames.

Calden gulps at seeing the elven woman, the high priestess of the Razmirans that they had been tracking for so long. She's suddenly no longer a name with a black robe and mask, but a very real person. Beautiful and radiating power as well. For his own benefit as much as for the others, he tries to find a reasonable reply. "Yes, it is a shame. But it will end today." His voice sounds only slightly shaky, of which he's reasonably proud.

The web that Iramine summons threatens to grab hold of Calden, but by remarkable luck he manages to twist himself free in the last instant, before the strands can complete their hold on him. Blessed be Shelyn. Thanks, Meph. Pushing his luck, Calden quickly tries to get away from the webbed area. Following along the wall, he sets his feet firm and stubbornly drive himself towards Iramine, along the wall.

Reflex save: 1d20 + 7 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 7 - 2 = 24 (+2 if she's evil or chaotic)

When he's face to face with the beautiful Elven woman, he gulps once more. She's responsible for all this, and she won't hesitate. Let go of your worry, and fight as you've trained... With that thought for comfort, he takes a first tentative jab at the priestess, slamming the heel of his hand into her chest to drive the wind from her lungs.

Round 1

Reflex: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29

Shirzon ducks out of the way of the web that springs up, trying to avoid stepping in the sticky carpet of tough strands.

Escape Artist: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23

She navigates through the webbing, moving toward Iramine with her weapons raised and determined scowl in place. Next to the elven woman, Shirzon shudders as a shiver runs down her spine. Confronted with the woman's beauty and her hypnotic voice, Shirzon nearly loses her nerve. But all it takes is thinking back to the cult in Tamran and the half-orc girl regains her fiery resolve. "You're going to pay for everything you've done!" Shirzon nods to Calden and whips her mace at the elf's enchanting face.

I'll move into flanking with Calden if possible and attack. I'm assuming I can flank, but if not then just remove those numbers. I would move myself, but my computer is not working properly right now.

Reflex Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
Combat Maneuver Check: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 5 + 2 = 8

Nuts. Merephel is STUCK! She'll try to get out next round.

Merephel is taken aback by Iramaine's beauty, but as a cleric of Shelyn, she understands that inner beauty, or in this case the lack thereof, is what truly makes a person great, or terribly wicked. She see her companions run after the woman, and moves to follow. Unfortunately, her armor gets stuck on the web, and she is held fast. She squirms, but quickly realizes that she is only making things worse.

"Get her guys! I'll be right there!"

She nods to her ancestor spirits, and makes a slashing motion with her hands, directing them to attack Iramine.

Merephel uses her remaining move action to direct her two ancestors spirits to attack. I don't know for sure if they would be affected by the web, but since they aren't actual stated creatures, I am just going to roll for their attacks.

Calden twists himself free from the web and moves toward Iramine. He takes a first tentative jab at the priestess, slamming the heel of his hand into her chest to drive the wind from her lungs: despite his weakness, Calden manages to hit and damage the elven mage, who looks at him with a disdainful gaze. Then her eyes suddenly darken: she appears to be fatigued from Calden’s violent slam.

Shirzon navigates through the webbing, moving toward Iramine with her weapons raised. Once she has reached the elven mage, Shirzon takes advantage of Calden’s strike and whips her mace at Iramine's enchanting face. The elf cannot dodge in time and gets hit again.

Taking advantage of Iramine’s poor conditions, Korech fires a volley of arrows at her. He manages to hit the elven mage twice. The elf screams in pain as Korech’s arrows pierces her body and turn her white clothes in a blood-soaked mess of white and red. Unfortunately, one of the arrows that would have hit Iramine has missed her due to the blurry aura surrounding her.

Finally, Merephel’s male ancestor misses, but her female ancestor proves no weaker than her offspring and breaks the elven sorceress’ defenses. Unfortunately, once again the blur surrounding Iramine protects her.

Iramine is bleeding and heavily wounded. She also appear to be fatigued and unable to keep up the fight, although unwilling to surrender. She puts her hand to her chest to stop the bleeding, but she clearly lacks the strength to do anything more than choke and spit blood. Suddenly, though, she manages to gather her remaining energies and whispers something in her elven tongue to the jewel she's holding in her right hand. Iramine then suddenly disappears in a cloud of black smoke. Right after, she reappears in a burst of flame as a huge fire elemental, forcing Calden to step back in order not to get burned down.

Two things - hate to ask but does that burn the web spell? And is she retaining the human type which'll affect my favored enemy bonus?

She does not burn the web, but she retains her human type. As far as Shirzon's question goes, I've edited her hp according to your heads-up, thanks!

Round 2

Sweating from the furnace-like heat of the room, Shirzon shields her face from the rush of heat and gasps for air as Iramine erupts into a living pillar of flame. Maybe it's an illusion? Or maybe she really turned into a living fire. Either way, she won't last long.

Shirzon quickly wipes the pooling sweat from her brow, then launches a flurry of attacks on the fiery new Iramine.
