You were selected to join the prestigious Quest for the Everflame. You don’t know why they choose you, but one thing is sure: you’ve been waiting for this moment to come for all of your life. Succeeding in the Quest means achieving honor, prestige and, above all, the definitive acceptance from Kassen society. Those who manage to emerge from the Crypt where Ekat Kassen defeated the bandit lord Asar are greeted as full members of Kassen, much as a coming-of-age ceremony. Many young Kassen’s townsfolk spend all of their adolescence hoping that their transition into adulthood may be celebrated with a success in the Quest for the Everflame, and you’re among the few lucky individuals who were deemed suitable for the task.

---

You’re at 20 minutes from the start of the great opening ceremony. Kassen is celebrating its civic holiday, and everyone is waiting for you in the town square to kick off the party. You were informed that you’re expected to travel light, carrying only what you absolutely need—weapons, armor, spellbooks, etc.—as rations and other generic equipment will be provided.

You’re now in company of your mentor or a member of your family, intent on saying goodbye to the people you care the most about.
______________________________________
In your very first post, I’m going to ask you to describe a brief scene in which your character is intent on bidding farewell to the people he or she cares the most about. Feel free to limit this scene to a one-on-one dialogue or to set the scene into a more complex situation involving more than one person. I won’t answer to your first post roleplaying your interlocutors, so please try to avoid asking questions or performing other activities that would require an answer from the NPCs. At the end of your post, your character should be heading toward the town square to attend to the opening ceremony.

Shirzon adjusts the straps on her backpack, careful not to jostle the alchemical supplies in it too much, and shifts her leather armor. She takes a deep breath and steps out of the kitchen into the tavern area of the Seven Silvers, where Jimes, Asina, and Trelvar await her. When the mayor himself came in the other day looking for her, Shirzon was sure it was nothing good - her criminal past had caught up to her, her alchemical sales had been exposed (she wasn't always sure it was legal, but perhaps someone was upset at having been a little bit swindled), and now she was going to rot in the guards’ prison like her good-for-nothing uncle. She was halfway out a back window when Trelvar told her the news: she had been selected to join the Quest for the Everflame. She was so stunned she fell out the window.

Now, the day of the Quest, she stood before the people who had taken her in and given her a home, despite the terror she was only a few years ago. Somehow, she had been chosen for the Quest. She still wasn't sure this wasn't some elaborate prank that Jimes was pulling. But Trelvar hatred pranks, and Asina couldn't keep a secret. She had thought she would have to leave for the city to find any respect in this town, but now she had been chosen for the honor of retrieving the Everflame. She would show them - the guards and townsfolk who called her Shirzon the Quarter, her filthy uncle, all of her peers who would rather fight or flee rather than associate with the runt with orc blood - she would prove that she had worth. Soon they would be singing her praises…

Snapping her focus back to the people in front of her, Shirzon steps up to Jimes and reaches down to shake his hand. He does so with a sly grin, then tosses her a coin that he produced from nowhere. ”Keep an eye out for trouble out there,” he advises. Shirzon deposits the coin in her pocket, glad that Jimes decided to give it back to her. She grins and says, ”Will do.”

She then steps up to Trelvar, but Asina rushes in from the side, wrapping her arms around Shirzon in a tight hug. Shirzon returns it, smiling. ”You help your dad take care of this place while I'm gone, okay? I'll bring you back a present.” Asina nods and reluctantly releases the hug when Trelvar clears his throat. Shirzon faces him and looks him in the eye, standing up a bit straighter (with some effort). She holds out her hand and Trelvar accepts it, shaking it once before pulling the slouching teen into a hug of his own. He gives some generic and awkward - though sincere - well wishes, while Shirzon is too surprised to return the embrace. Getting her wits back, she returns the hug. ”I'll be back soon enough. And I'll make you proud.” Trelvar pulls back, and offers another handshake. Shirzon takes it and gives one last firm shake, grinning.

Jimes speaks up again: ”You should get to the town square. We have a few things to take care of, but you don't want to be late!” Shirzon nods and heads for the doorway. Looking back in, she smiles - then raises her hand to brush something from her eyes. Feeling her hand come away wet, she tries to quickly hide her tears by wiping them away as fast as she can. Satisfied, she waves one last time before heading out. ”See you all there!”

Merephel had finally finished sorting her possessions into the three piles. One was what she was taking with her on the Quest, and the other two were separate piles of possessions she had sorted. She wasn’t a terribly organized person, but it was a good way to occupy her mind. She was very nervous.

’I can’t believe I was selected for the Quest! This is a dream come true.

She thought for a few moments, and moved a few items around, switching some items from pile to another. In some cases, she moved a few back. She eventually settled, and packed her backpack with a few items. She then spent the next several minutes changing into a suitable outfit. She changed into an outfit she’d bought in case she got selected. It consisted of sturdy leather boots, with metal reinforcements on the bottoms. She put on a pair of dark brown leather breeches, and then a custom leather skirt over that. She’d covered the leather skirt in a very nice white cloth pattern of Shelyn’s Songbird, all done up in its full rainbow glory. She buckled a black leather belt on, and attached a loop to hold her shortspear. She swapped her tunic for a gray long-sleeved shirt, and added her fur-lined vest. She through her favorite red silk scarf around her neck for a splash of color, and grabbed her wide-brimmed felt-lined leather hat.

Then came the armor.

It took several minutes to don her scale mail, and she realized she would have to wear some of her clothes over it. She ended up with the skirt and vest over the armor. Lastly, she threw the oiled cloak over her shoulders. It fastened in the front with an ornate gold-plated wolf clasp.

Clad in her new outfit, and having grabbed her weapons and backpack, she made her way outside.

Her family was waiting outside. Her mother was teary-eyed, and her father looked so proud. Her little brother was running around swinging a stick; fighting imaginary monsters. His head was always in the clouds. She embraced her mother, and her father gave her an awkward hug. She smiled at her brother, and patted his head. No words were spoken; which wasn’t out of character for her family. They were very quiet in times of stress or excitement.

She made her way from the outskirts of town, and started into town. She stopped off at the temple, and looked for her mentor, Father Rantal. She didn’t see him though, and crestfallen, she made her way toward the square.

On her way, she bumped into Asina. Quite literally, as Merephel was looking at the ground, steeling herself mentally. Asina was reading while she walked, and of course the young women collided. Laughing, Merephel pulled Asina to her feet.

”You’re head is in the clouds today, my dear.” Merephel brushed Asina off.

Asina smiled, looking a little embarrassed, responded immediately. ”It’s nothing! I’m just…preoccupied. And hey! You bumped into me too!” She said defensively.

”That I did. What are you reading?" Merephel was an avid reader; when she remembered she was an avid reader.

"Oh, nothing. Just a...book about past Quests." Asina looked despondent, and was obviously not in a talkative mood.

"I see. Well, on that note, will you walk me to the square?”

Asina lit up. ”Oh Meph! That’s right! You got chosen for the Quest this year! How could I have forgotten? I hope I get chosen when I’m old enough. I’d love to walk you!”

Merephel linked arms with Asina, and they walked together to the square. They chatted about life, love, and Asina’s dreams of Tamran.

Merephel was so content she forgot she was nervous.

Male CG Half-Orc Ranger 6 | HP: 51/51 | AC: 22 (15 Tch, 17 Fl) {SoF} | CMB: +9, CMD: 22 | F: +6, R: +8, W: +4 | Init: +3 | Perc: +11, SM: +9 | Speed 30ft | Orc Ferocity: 1/1 | CLW Wand 14/50 | Spells Remaining: 2/2 | Active conditions: Shield of Faith

Throughout his entire life, Korech had known unbelievable hardship. Growing up in Belkzen he had been tortured to near-death, beaten daily, neglected, and hated by all around him. In the Fangwood he had been near death repeatedly from starvation, injury, or even poison as he learned what he could eat. He knew he was tough, and he had never cried. Not once.

----------------

Huge sobs wracked Korech's body as he sat beside Arnama in her home, his face buried in his hands. He had never anticipated he would be selected for the quest, he had never even hoped. He was only half-sure of what the quest was - go to a crypt, light a lantern, bring it back. But the quest was important, and people were chosen for it. Other people. The beautiful ones, the ones beloved by the town who were truly members of the community. Or perhaps for those who displayed rare gifts or cunning. He had none of these, but he had still been chosen.

"Stop crying." Arnama was trying to be kind, but like Korech she wasn't good with displays of emotion and was unsure of how to deal with him. "You're supposed to be happy!"

"Am happy," said Korech, his bass voice a feeble croak. He looked up at Arnama with tears on his craggy face. "The mayor said. The mayor. Mayor don't say nothing to me. He don't say nothing. And I don't shoot good. I don't talk good. I don't..." He trailed off, forcing himself to stop crying.

Arnama patted him awkwardly on the back before giving him a little shove. "Get up, dry your eyes off, and be proud! You deserve this honour, and you're going to knock 'em dead. These things are political. By choosing you, it's a statement that you're welcome here, you're a part of us, and you deserve to be here. But this is a rite of adulthood, don't show up blubbing like a child!"

Propping his hands against the wall, Korech inhaled and exhaled several long, clattering breaths. Slowly, he calmed himself down before he looked to Arnama and smiled. It wasn't a particularly pretty smile; all tusks and hair. He grabbed his pack, full of the gear he prepared for his rangings, hooked his greataxe on his back, and finally grabbed the bow Arnama had given him a year ago.

"Thanks you." Korech eyed Arnama evenly and then grabbed the woman in a huge hug. "Thanks you."

Arnama squeezed Korech back before pushing him out of her home. For the first time since he arrived in Kassen, he raised his head instead of staring at the ground, and walked forward with confidence.

After have talking with some friends, Calden makes his way back to his family. They were all there, in their best Sunday's clothes: His father talking shop with Roldare, his mother, eyes moist and trying to keep his baby brother occupied and Ada, gossiping and giggling with Dimira, no doubt pointing out all the cute boys. How many years have we stood there, together? Could I ever have thought that I would be selected one day? Will I ever stand there with a family of my own?

Once he reaches his family, Calden sets his backpack on the ground. "I told you, Mother" he says with a sigh. "We were told to pack light. I really don't need all this stuff." He begins unpacking, handing most of the contents of his backpack to his father and Roldare. Were they thinking I'm going on a field trip?! Calden removes a bedroll and blanket, a roll of torches and candles, and enough food to last his entire family a week. "There," he says, satisfied with his backpack. It contains his copy of Irori's scriptures, two tindertwigs that he had bought off Shirzon a while ago and his waterskin. He feels at his belt for his dagger and money pouch, and put a hand on the sash holding his throwing stars. With my own staff, what else could I need?

With nothing else to do, makes his goodbyes. He takes Roldare's outstretched hand for a firm handshake and ruffles his brother's hair. With a mischievous smile he teases his sister before giving her a firm hug. "You stay out of trouble with the boys while I'm gone, hear me? Dimira, will you look out for her? When she sees a set of pretty eyes, her wits meld into jelly, I tell ya." Calden then suffers through the hugs from his mother and father at the same time, barely getting enough breath to mutter that "Yes, I will make you proud."

He takes his backpack and quarterstaff, waves a final time and makes his way over to Ilimara, who stands by herself a while off. Calden keeps a respectful distance and takes on a relaxed but steady stance, out of habit. "Ilimara.." Too familiar! "Alnnasih*. I don't think I've ever properly thanked you for training me. If it weren't for you, I... I probably wouldn't be picked for the Quest today. You make, err... It's like the teachings of Irori say: I strive to be a better... man." The word felt awkward on his tongue, but he supposed it was about time. To avoid seeing her reaction, Calden places his hands together before his heart and closes his eyes. He gives a formal bow and speaks softly, but loud enough to hear. "Thank you, Ilimara."

With that, he's done everything he had planned. Calden turns around, picks up his backpack and quarterstaff and starts walking to the town square.

The bells atop the Temple of Erastil toll their midday song, echoing throughout the quiet town of Kassen. As the peals begin to fade, the first of the townsfolk make their way into the square, dressed in black, as if attending a funeral. They slowly fill the square, moving quietly across the cold, hard ground, their eyes downcast and mournful. After a few moments, a murmur passes through the crowd as it slowly parts to let Mayor Uptal through. He leads the way with a tarnished silver lantern. Behind him, an old pony drags a cart laden with backpacks and supplies. Once he reaches the center of the crowd, Mayor Uptal stops and calls out to the assembled townsfolk.

Once again the winter winds blow through the Fangwood, marking the end of another harvest. There are wolves in the woods, howling at our walls, and serpents in our shadows, waiting to strike. Just as it was one hundred and seventy-four years ago, when Kassen himself left these walls to protect us, so it is today. Where are the heroes? Where are the brave folk that will venture out to Kassen’s tomb and retrieve the flame to keep this community safe for another winter?

DC 12 Knowledge (local):
You’re aware that according to the town’s traditions, after this formula has been pronounced, you are supposed to come forth to accept your mission.

Mayor Uptal asks: “Who is to have the honor of carrying the sacred lantern?".

Then he hands the lantern to the person you indicate*: “So you’ve been chosen. You shall use the lantern to bring the everlasting fire back to Kassen”. A spontaneous applause ensues as Kassen's townsfolk praise your courage.

The mayor then hands each of you a backpack containing 5 days’ worth of rations, a small tent, a winter blanket, a full waterskin and a piece of the Trail Map that leads from Kassen to the Crypt of the Everflame**.

Calden stands in the town square, alone among the villagers. He has his cloak wrapped tightly around him.

As the mayor makes his speech and lists all the dangers troubling Kassen, he shivers. Suddenly, he's hit by the weight of their mission, the responsibility that will be on his shoulders in a few moments. Even I thought this was going to be like a field trip. But everyone will count on us, as a symbol to protect us from everything wrong with the world. What if we fail? He shivers again, missing the moment when he should have stepped forward.

No knowledge local skill to attempt the check.

When he finally understands that he's supposed to come forward, he pulls himself up, breathes deeply and steps out of the crowd, next to the other three. He gives them an encouraging nod, lending - and seeking - strength.

Upon the mayor's request for someone to carry the lantern, Calden elbows Korech softly in the ribs, gently nudging him forward. "Go on, take it," he whispers. *

Then, when they receive their backpacks, Calden opens it with haste. His face turns sour, disappointment clear when he sees the bare contents. What? That's it? Just trail rations, and not even something to make fire or light? They want us to freeze out there? It takes seeing the map, only a part of the whole, to make it click in his mind. Of course. They want us to work together. I hope the others have the things we really need.

Calden looks up from his backpack and gives the others a questioning look, before transferring the items to his own backpack.

* If Korech declines and none of the others volunteer promptly, Calden steps forward to take the lantern.

Korech has a pack full of generic adventuring gear. I'll say Arnama quietly took most of it so he can do the quest 'properly'.

Upon grabbing his pack, Korech realized it was suspiciously light, but since he was so intent on making a show of walking like he knew how to walk, he ignored it. Did Arnama empty my pack?

As the call comes out, Korech takes a step out, sneaking glances to the side to see who else was chosen.

Merephel, of course they would choose Merephel. Who wouldn't? And Calden... he makes sense. And... Shirzon? What?

Korech stands beside Calden, desperately trying to quell his shaking as he keeps his chin up and looks ahead. When Calden nudges him, his eyes go wide with panic and he stands frozen for a moment, looking from Calden to the others.

Male LG Human (Nirmathi) Monk 6

Look at him, poor guy. He seems to expect that it'll all be a joke on him, and we'll all end up laughing...

Calden gives him an encouraging smile. "Go! You've earned it as much as the rest of us," Calden whispers.

He's an odd fellow, all right. But he seemed friendly enough when we met the other night at the Seven Silvers. And the Mayor chose him, so that also counts for something.

Merephel too, doesn't have Knowledge: Local. Apparently none of us paid attention in local history class.

Merephel didn't know she was to step forward, but she caught on quick enough when her companions did so.

She walked forward and grabbed her backpack, and then stepped back into the line. She stood at attention, trying to maintain formality...until she saw Calden transferring items from bag to another. She promptly did the same. Once the new backpack was empty, she rolled it up, and put it in the bag as well.

She tucked the map piece she was given into her cloak, after sneaking a glance at it.

'Oh! I guess my map piece is first. I suppose that means I need to help lead us out of the city?'

She heard Calden murmur something to Korech. She gave Korech a smile, not sure what had been said, but trying to be a team player.

Lastly, she glanced back at Asina, pointed at the items she had left out of her bag, and made a couple little hand gestures, to indicate that she she grab them after the ceremony.

Although she had lived in Kassen her whole fifteen years, Shirzon had only recently attended any of the past year's Quest holiday ceremonies. Actually, it may have been just the one - and she decided to leave halfway through because she got tired of people telling her to be quiet after every yawn.

But now that she's part of it, she does her best to stay alert and actually pay attention to the Mayor's speech. Sounds like a lot of posturing. I haven't seen anyone around half as scared of snakes and wolves as they are of me. Shirzon involuntarily curls her lip into a snarl, but dials it back when she remembers where she is. After the mayor's call for brave heroes, she scans the crowd for Jimes and Trelvar, to see what she's supposed to do. After standing there awkwardly for probably too long, Shirzon catches Asina’s eye as she sits on her father's shoulders, gesturing to go up.

Shirzon pushes through the crowd - although they seem to move as if they're trying to be helpful, rather than because they don't want to be near her - and makes it to the stage. She glances at the others who have been chosen. Sheep farmer, dairy farmer… Korech? she thinks incredulously. He seems to return her skeptical look. She nods at all of them in acknowledgement, trying to focus on not wrecking the ceremony. She hears Calden prod Korech to take the lantern, and when the gruff looking half-orc looks around like he's going to throw up, she meets his eye and gives him a smirk. ”Go ahead and take it. It won't bite.”

One she has her pack and the crowd applauds them as they boldly go into the wilderness (or at least off the stage), Shirzon gets a chance to check the second backpack the mayor handed her. Useful camping equipment for the most part, plus what looks to be only a part of a map. Probably the others had the rest - cute. The real find, though, was a bottle of brandy tucked away in the side. Shirzon opens the stopper and gives it a sniff, nodding with approval to herself at the quality. Maybe Jimes snuck it in for her? She glances at Korech again after they've left the crowd, hoping he's not still shaking.

At Shirzon's words, Korech looks to the other half-orc, his eyes wide with terror. He drops a feeble nod.

"Uh, thanks."

Well, that's two out of four. Hope Merephel isn't mad at me.

Inhaling and exhaling very, very slowly, Korech steps forwards. His grey-green skin is paler than anyone is used to seeing. With incredible effort he holds his head high and, and he steps forward to take the lantern. Looking like he wants to be anywhere but at the centre of a crowd, Korech bows his head graciously to the mayor and takes a little too long before turning to bow his head to the crowd. He then quickly steps back, grateful for the opportunity to just look through his pack.

Calm down. Calm down. Calm down. Calm down. All right. Some basic supplies. Nothing fancy here. I guess the humans will need the torch light. And is that a map? Well, a piece. This isn't the place to look at it.

Korech glances in his pack, not taking anything out. He shrugs to himself before close it and hoisting it awkwardly over his shoulder, alongside his greataxe and bow.

Korech was obviously nervous, but then again they all were.

Once he stood, Merephel slipped her hand into his, and gave it a reassuring squeeze.

"I'm glad you were chosen," she whispered,"You deserve it most of all."

She gave him another squeeze.

The mayor smiles as Korech takes the lantern. “I’m sure you will prove worthy of this great honor”, he whispers to the half-orc. Then he once again speaks to the townsfolk: “I present to you the brave heroes who will follow in Kassen’s footsteps to retrieve the Everflame! Some of them may not return, but I say to you that their sacrifice shall not be forgotten. Go, brave heroes, and do not return until you have the eternal fire.” With that, the mayor points to the south, the direction of Kassen’s tomb. The townsfolk begin waving goodbye with cold, solemn looks on most of their faces.

DC 15 Perception check:
You overhear one of the townsfolk talking about the “preparations” occurring at the tomb.

After saying goodbye to the townsfolk the group chosen for the Quest is ready to depart.

DC 13 Knowledge (geography) check:
The crypt is located roughly 40 miles south of Kassen, meaning that, traveling on foot, you will arrive at the end of the next day.

In your next posts, I would like you to roleplay a bit during the first 2 hours of your journey. Feel free to post more than once if you wish. Also, if you need your character to perform actions such as bringing back together the map’s pieces or splitting equipment with other party members, this is the right time.

I need to know who's guiding the group towards its destination. The chosen character should make a Survival check to guide the group for each hour spent traveling (I will roll these checks for you, and assume all of the other character use the aid another action). You can either let me know through actual roleplay or just discuss it in the Discussion Thread, as you prefer.

You have time until 8 a.m. GMT+1 (12:00 p.m. for Korech, 11:00 p.m. for Shirzon and Merephel) to answer to this post. I will post again at 8 a.m. GMT+1 to move things along.

EDIT; Taking 10 on perception.

Korech's hand is still at first as Merephel grabs it. After a while, he squeezes back before letting go. Gathering his pack, he slings it over his shoulder, awkwardly balancing it with the greataxe, bow, and quiver full of arrows before heading out of town with the others. Once outside of the town limits and outside the eyes of the crowd, Korech seems to relax a great deal and appears more in his element.

"Thanks you for lantern. I.. uh..." he tries to search for a word but fails. "Is good. Now outside - I good with outside. Maybe I find way? I have map piece, you have map pieces too?"

He produces his map fragment from his pack, showing it to the group. He then glances over his shoulder.

"Also, town talk about 'prep'rations' at tomb? What's that?"

Once outside, Korech unslings, and strings his bow, carrying it loosely in his left hand while he keeps the lantern handy.

On the road, Shirzon looks through the supplies, checking her rations. ”Yeesh, they were all so damn dour when we left. Some holiday. Blech.” She makes a face and pulls out an unwrapped parcel of trail rations. ”Hey, someone trade with me. I can't eat this stuff. Bread makes me sick and I don't do well with meat.”

She holds the rations in one hand, and really gets a look at the group of four of them. Practically half the half-orc population of Kassen had been sent on this Quest with the well respected children of decent farm folk humans. They were out the gate, and on their way. Could this still be some weird joke? ”I have a piece of a map, too. Korech, you should lead. You're always out in the woods anyway, right?” Shirzon suggests. Also, then these humans can't lead us into some embarrassing trap. She eyes Calden and Merephel suspiciously, but shrugs it off so she doesn't stare. "Preparations at the tomb? I dunno. Think they sent someone ahead to make sure it's still standing?"

Holy crap. Yeah, Merephel heard that. And apparently every other conversation in a 2-mile radius.

"You know, I did hear something about that. My guess is they are setting up surprises for us, because the Quest is a sort of Test, right?"

She fished around in her bag, before she remembered where she had stowed her map piece. She pulled it out, and held it up triumphantly.

"Korech, I have the piece that is first. You should have it."

She held it out to her friend, then turned toward Shirzon.

"You, know, I bet you're right. Would seem silly to go through all this and have the Crypt in disrepair. Also, I have the provided rations, and some from home. You can trade me for the stuff I brought from home, if you like. It's mostly cheese, and some dried fruits. Will that work?"

Male LG Human (Nirmathi) Monk 6

Calden is glad that Korech steps up to take the lantern. He breathes a sigh of relief that that burden passed him by, at least. He can't help but notice Merephel holding hands with Korech. Well, that's pretty soon, but not really unexpected...

What? Sacrifice?! Calden shivers again as he waves his goodbyes. Definately not a field trip.

Perception, Take 10: 10 + 6 = 16

When their group has left the town and Korech mentions the lantern, Calden puts a hand on his shoulder. "It's OK. We're all in this together. I have a piece of the map as well." He doesn't pull it out of his backpack yet, preferring to keep moving for now. "The mayor definitely wants us to work together on this." I'd better not mention the part about maybe not all of us making it back. Calden is happy to let Korech lead, glad the the fellow seems to be relaxing in his familiar environment.

"I heard about theses preparations as well. I'm not sure, but we'd better keep our eyes open. People all clam up when they're heard talking about it. Roldare and Dimara were up to something as well, but I couldn't figure out what it was about."

Calden shrugs when Shirzon offers to trade some food. "I don't think I've gotten any better than you did. Just trail rations. Goes to show, my mother packed me all sorts of good food and I left it behind, because 'everything would be provided'." He makes a bit of a sour face, but there's not really any malice in it. "Did you get any decent equipment, by the way? Something to make fire or light, at least?"

Merephel poked Calden in a friendly manner.

"I have some fire-starting equipment. Though not much, just a set of flint and steel. Though I do have some lamp oil if we really get can't get a fire going. I've got a lamp and a few torches too. Would you help me carry some of our traveling gear?"

Shirzon gladly trades Merephel her meat and bread for some cheese and fruit, swapping them with a little flourish. She feels rude as she repacks the food without saying anything, and awkwardly speaks up. ”Uh, thanks, Angorat.”

When Calden starts taking about light, she pipes up. ”I got a torch in here if you want it. Did you not get one, Tigg? Sometimes I forget that you people can't see in the dark. Must be a pain.”

Merephel smiled.

"Anytime Shirzon. I'm glad you are with us."

She reached into her bag, and grabbed one last piece of cheese.

"This is the good stuff. Mom makes this amazing provolone. I was saving it for myself...but I want you to have it."

She tossed it casually to Shirzon.

Korech takes the map fragment from Merephel, studying it before nodding once.

"We walk now. All show map bits later, okay? Make big map. But walk now. Get away from town."

With the group now moving, Korech remains silent for a while as the group talks about their equipment and the mission. He produces a tinder and tindertwigs from his own pack.

"I have things for fire too. Merephel have flint, I have tinder. Tinder easy to get, but that not matter. There point in this. We all work like one, we live. We make fire together, not 'lone. Shirzon not like food - we trade. Everyone happy. Oh, I also have torch - humans take. Not need."

Korech produces a torch, offering it to either Calden or Merephel. He falls silent after passing the torch, for once not looking at the ground and instead constantly scanning the horizon, moving warily.

"Calden, you smart. Town faces look like we already dead - right? I... think this be dangerous. Prep'rations maybe scary for tomb. I think maybe just go light lantern, have fun, get drink. Not sure now. You all know how to fight?"

Shirzon catches the cheese reflexively, but takes a moment to register it as a gift. "...Wait, what? Really?" The smell of the provolone wafts up to her, and her mouth starts to water. She stares at the cheese in her hands, then looks back at the human girl. "You want me to have this? Uh... Why?"

Merephel took the offered torch, and stowed it with her others.

"Actually, I have had a bit of combat training. I'm sure it isn't as extensive as some you, but I can hold my own."

As she spoke, she rapped her knuckles against her armor. Her face lit up as though she'd remembered something, and she pulled her wooden shield from it's place attached to the outside of her backpack. She held it in her left arm, keeping her right free.

"Also, Shelyn has granted me a few defensive spells that will aid us should the need arise."

She chuckled at Shirzon's response.

"Because we're friends now, silly. And besides, us girls have to stick together, right?"

"She nice to us half-breeds. Dunno why. But I not complain. Friendly ladies with cheese not come by every day."

Shirzon still looks confused, but shrugs in acquiescence. "If you say so, Angorat. As long as we're stuck together for now, we might as well be friends, eh?" she says with a grin.

She nods to Korech. "You're right about that. And don't worry about me, I know how to fight. I have to bounce Grimscar every other week don't I? You just gotta hit fast and aim where they're tender." She briefly demonstrates her technique with some shadow boxing. "How about you? You're probably not bad with a bow. And I bet you could do some damage with that axe of yours."

Merephel smiled at Shirzon.

"So friends it is. Lead on Korech."

She absent-mindly patted Korech on the arm, once again.

Korech again seems unsure of himself after Merephel pats him, and he speeds up his pace a little. He tucks his bow under his arm to scratch at his tangle of short blue-black hair for a moment.

What do I do what do I do...

"So, uh... right. Merephel do god-magic and wears big can, Shirzon... I know you fight. All half-orcs fight. I know how use bow, swing axe. Bite maybe."

He glances over his shoulder to Calden.

"You fight, Calden? I dunno you good."

Male LG Human (Nirmathi) Monk 6

Calden walks besides Merephel for a moment. He misses a step when she pokes him and doesn't answer immediately when she asks him to carry things for her. So that's how it's going to be? for some cuddling and holding hands she moves to this Korech fellow, and when it's time for some heavy lifting, Calden's the man...? "Yeah sure," he answers after a moment. "Give me that tent, I can carry two." He looks at her outfit. "Regretting all that heavy armor yet?" he teases, before taking another glance. "It looks good on you, though. You look... elegant - and fierce at the same time." He takes the tent from atop her backpack and adds it to his own. He seems strained under the extra weight, but not enough to slow him down.

He walks in silence for a moment behind the others, shifting his load until he finds a good balance. Once he's happy, he catches up. "Well, I'm glad that we have some useful equipment. I got some rope and a grappling hook. Must be nice to be able to see in the dark..." He lets the though sink in, sounding more than a bit jealous. "We still have some hours of light left. I supposed we set up camp when it gets too dark for Merephel and me to see."

He finds himself walking next to Korech when the women are trading food. The suggestion to cheat on the Quest draws a slightly scandalized and offended look. "You're not serious, are you? This is important, we can't just pretend. Besides, I think that the thing with the black clothes is mostly ceremony. I think that it's show, to set up for when we get back". Calden slows his talking slightly, to order his thoughts and to make sure Korech will understand. "You know when you light a candle in the morning, when it's still pitch black? The candle will seem even brighter... Oh, that's a terrible example for you. Sorry. Different one: It's like when you've skipped breakfast and lunch. Then, when you finally eat something, it tastes all the better." He waits for Korech to nod, hoping that the example doesn't draw too many bad memories.

"See, it's all about contrast. The Quest and the Lantern are important to the people. It helps them remember that we're still here, alive and thriving despite the odds. And the celebration will be even better when people have thought of the gloom first. So, we have to do this the proper way, because it matters. And because we would always know if we'd taken the easy way out. It won't be easy, but I'm sure we'll make it through." That brings Calden to the topic of fighting, which makes Calden seem insecure. "Well, I've gotten into some romps when I was a kid, but I didn't really have to defend myself."

"I've been training hard with Ilimara," Calden says as he twirls his staff in one hand for confirmation, "but was just what it was. Just sparring. I never thought I'd actually have to use it much, you know?"

You have been traveling for 2 hours now, following Korech’s guide in the Fangwoods. Your conversation is abruptly interrupted by the following scene.

---

The narrow path winds through the raking claws of the trees, now bereft of their leaves, which crunch loudly underfoot. Up ahead, a fallen tree trunk blocks the path. Suddenly a trio of snarling humanoids leaps up from behind the log, all greenish skin and fearsome tusks, bellowing vulgar challenges.

DC 10 Knowledge (local) check *:
These creatures are clearly orcs. Along with their brute strength and comparatively low intellect, the primary difference between orcs and the civilized humanoids is their attitude. As a culture, orcs are violent and aggressive, with the strongest ruling the rest through fear and brutality. They take what they want by force, and think nothing of slaughtering or enslaving entire villages when they can get away with it. They have little time for niceties or details, and their camps and villages tend to be filthy, ramshackle affairs filled with drunken brawls, pit fights, and other sadistic entertainment. Lacking the patience for farming and only able to shepherd the most robust and self-sufficient animals, orcs almost always find it easier to take what someone else has built than to create things themselves. They are arrogant and quick to anger when challenged, but only worry about honor so far as it directly benefits them to do so.

An adult male orc is roughly 6 feet tall and 210 pounds. Orcs and humans interbreed frequently, though this is almost always the result of raids and slave-taking rather than consensual unions. Many orc tribes purposefully breed for half-orcs and raise them as their own, as the smarter progeny make excellent strategists and leaders for their tribes.

He looks from the orcs to Korech at his right shoulder, unsure how the half-orc might react. Oh crap. I hope he knows what to do...

Still spinning his quarterstaff from his earlier demonstration, Calden hefts the weapon in both hands and takes a steady position, just as he had been trained. He hears Ilimara's steady voice in his head, with her exotic accent, and uses it to guide his actions. Right foot forward. Split the weight. Don't look at your hands! Both Shirzon and Korech are able to hit the orcs with their arrows. Though accurate and almost lethal, their arrows are not enough to stop the furious advance of the orcs. Shouting and bellowing other vulgar challenges in Orcish, the three creatures move closer. The two wounded orcs only manage to drag themselves towards you, their wounds still opened and bleeding. Calden instantly hits the orc in front of him: with a decisive swing of his quartestaff he hits the orc's head, knocking him down.

Korech:
Something is wrong with these creatures. They are not...real! They're just illusions, or at least this is the way you are seeing them. You're completely certain about it! They cannot truly hurt you or your companions. Must be a joke from the townsfolk.

The only unharmed orc moves towards you, and throws a javelin at Calden once he knocks down his orc brethren. His javelin though is very inaccurate, and misses.

He has little time to dwell on it, when he notices that Korech has stopped fighting. Calden looks over his shoulder, angry. "Hey Korech. Snap out of it!" The meaning of the half-orc's words barely registers, which isn't helped by the fact that he switches to Orcish, or that Shirzon joins in. "What?!" he shouts in frustration.

The javelin soaring past him brings Calden back to the fight. Seeing as how Korech seems too shocked to defend himself, Calden steps up to the second orc. He strikes with a rapid succession of attacks, hoping to find a break in its defenses.

--
5-foot step, Flurry of Blows on the orc next to Korech. Active conditions: Bless

Attack 1: 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 2 + 1 = 21
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Attack 2: 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 1 = 7
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

GM, do the orcs have numbers? I don't see them on Roll20.

ROUND 2
=======================

Convinced of the illusory nature of the orcs before him, Korech stops fighting, inviting his companions to do the same. Merephel raises her defenses, while Calden and Shirzon, not entirely convinced by Korech's words, continue the battle: Shirzon shoots another arrow at the orc in front of Korech, but her shot is inaccurate this time, and her arrow passes over the orc's head, planting itself in the soil at the orc's back; Calden proves more efficient instead, and after a quick side step he punches the orc with a precise and powerful blow, using the techniques he learned from Ilimara. His attack is sufficiently powerful to knock down the orc, who falls down with a choked rattle.

There's only one orc left standing: illusory or not, the foul being seems anything but discouraged and he furiously enters the melee, trying to hit Korech with his rusting greataxe. His blow is mighty and accurate. The orc's greataxe gets lodged in Korech's neck with a scary violence, causing the half-orc a deep, bleeding wound which risks to knock down Korech in a matter of seconds if not properly healed soon.

---

Korech:
You're perfectly aware that the orc's blow was not real. The scene your companions have seen is an illusion: you're convinced of being completely unharmed, even after the (illusory) attack from the orc standing in front of you.

Calden:
Now you can see the illusory nature of the orcs too. You're convinced that these creature cannot harm you. Maybe these orcs were the joke of someone in the village or one of the "preparations" you heard people talking about.

I will post again at 12 p.m. GMT+1 to move things along. Everyone who won’t have acted yet will be botted or I’ll have he/she delay his/her action.

Round 3

========

Korech throws down his bow and points at the orc.

"Magic trick, not real orcs! Stop fight! It not hit me!" He quickly starts babbling to Shirzon in orcish.

GM:

Korech illustrates his point by running through the orc, back and forth, several times. Not sure how you want to translate that to the other characters.

[spoiler=Orcish]
"Whatever you're seeing is a lie or an illusion or something. I feel fine. Look at them again, look through them - it's just some stupid magic trick."

Round 3

Calden lets out a franctic scream when he sees the last orc land a blow straight into Korech's neck. He feels panic welling up inside him, unril it hits him that Korech doesn't seem troubled by the wound, at all. Then he notices that the orcs are slightly translucent. How did I not see this?

Calden leans on his quarterstaff, panting from the adrenalin. He stares at the remaining 'orc', curious to see how it behaves. "I see it now, Korech. They're not real, but made from magic. Somehow...?"

Merephel screams, and backs up quickly. She narrows her eyes, and extends her holy symbol once more.

"Shelyn! Heal my companions with your Grace!"

Merephel still isn't convinced the orcs are illusions yet, although the evidence is mounting. Nonetheless, she channels positive energy. She backs up (updated on the Roll20 site), and uses Selective Channel it ignor the orcs in range. She heals 1d6.

"Have you two got rocks in your heads? Look at Korech! You'll pay this, you bastard!" Shirzon yells, dodging around to the side of the last orc. She pulls out her second mace, and aims for the gnashing teeth of the orc in front of her.

Light Mace, flanking?: 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 1 + 2 = 12
Damage, sneak attack: 1d6 + 1 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 1 + (5) = 7

Gah, got my message to Shirzon hidden by my spoiler tag. Well let's try again!

Korech lets out a loud groan, yelling at the others.

"Calden know! Is magic trick! Not real!"

He turns to Shirzon, babbling in orcish.

Orcish:

"The orcs are an illusion or magic trick or something. I can see right through them. Stop fighting them and look at them!"

Round 3, continued
========

Calden is roused from his study of the orc by Merephel's scream. Well, she must still think that Korech's wounds are real. Poor girl.

While Korech is talking to Shirzon, Calden tries to calm Merephel and persuade her of what's happening. "Merephel, it's all right. The orcs aren't real, and Korech wasn't actually hurt." Calden takes a breath, trying to steady himself. "Look at it," he says while pointing his stick at the remaining orc. "It's not really there. I don't know squat about magic, but there must be some trick involved."

This is my second post for round 3, but since I haven't many any action and it's just talking, I hope that's OK.

ROUND 3
=======================

While Calden and Korech continue in their attempts to show to their companions the only orc still standing is not real, Shirzon doesn't hesitate to attack the vile creature. Her strike is inaccurate despite the distraction provided by Calden.

Shirzon:
Now you can see the illusory nature of the orcs too. You're convinced that these creature cannot harm you. Maybe these orcs were the joke of someone in the village or one of the "preparations" your companions heard talking about. Korech's wound is not there: his neck is perfectly immaculate.

---

The orc roars and directs his greataxe against Korech once again. His attack is well focused and hits Korech in the belly, completely destroying his armor.

Calden, Korech and Shirzon:
You're perfectly aware that the orc's blow was not real. The scene Merephel is seeing is an illusion. Seems like only those who attack or are attacked by the orc are able to see through the illusion. Maybe Merephel should try to hit the creature to see its true nature: after all, this has no chance of causing her any harm, since the orc is not real at all and as such cannot inflict real wounds to anyone.

Good job guys! I know it's very difficult to not be a little metagame-y here, but I think you're proving pretty good at Handling this bizarre situation!

I will bot your actions if you won't be able to post in time.

Round 4

=========

Shirzon raises an eyebrow at the orc in front of her, seemingly confused. "Oh. So..." She looks to the still scared Merephel as Korech and Calden relax.

She gives the young men a meaningful wink, then steps behind the remaining orc. She calls out to Merephel: "Angorat! Get over here and help us! Show this orc what you can do with that glaive of yours before Korech is a goner!"

The half-orc's slouch dips lower into a crouched fighting position, and she swings quickly at the orc's sensitive parts.
