A feral looking elf and a velociraptor walk into the room Nope.. not the beginning of a bad joke.. and find somewhere to sit with their backs to a wall and wait patiently for the rest of the team to show up. During the interrim, Jazmine tosses out a well chewed stick, and Giggles playfully retrieves it.
Jazmine has cold weather clothing, but she will also devote 2 spells a day to Endure Elements, one for herself and one for Giggles. We have learned from experience that dino-pops are not a good thing.

An athletic looking tiefling with scaly skin and prominent teeth eases into the room, seeing but one person, he bows respectfully, and smiles but says nothing. He remains standing but picks a corner and gazes around like he's expecting someone. a bit about Vroth, he fled from his clan and thinks he's being hunted down. He has a soft heart but because of his looks, most people see him in a negative manner. He dislikes humans and is partial to gnomes. He will gladly share his past if asked, but prefers silence.

The door bangs open as a large (7') heavily muscled half orc strides into the room. Vivid red tattoos whorl across his face. A look of irritation flashes away as he see's those gathered here.

Is this the place for the rescue mission? I've spent 3 gods' cursed weeks in this city with nothing to show for it, but this fancy new armour and now i've got less than a dubloon to my name! I've been waiting for the call to action, and at last it has come... Not only that but it's a call back to the North, my homeland.

Charn is my name - not Charmed... Underneath any gruffness in his words is a bit of charm and he definitely winks at Merri as he speaks.

In my clan I'm called Battle-fortune. Long story, maybe we'll have time on the journey. I wield weapons and call upon the skill and guidance of the spirits to guide my aim and knit our flesh. What skills do you bring to our party?

He looks around the room, appraising the others, with a friendly eye. He looks a bit wary of the dino, but experimentally holds out a hand to pet it.

A tall nagaji strides in and surveys the room. Clad in light armor and a barbed vest, with a Lucerne hanger across his back, he cuts an impressive figure. He speaks, his voice a pleasing, smooth baritone that nonetheless comes across a little creepy, "Yes. I see we have strength and power gathered here." He pauses a moment and then spreads his muscled, scaled arms, spreading his clawed hands wide. "My name is Korvalis Kembai. I bring the might of a young Naga and the cleverness of a dragon. I have slain a minotaur and I will surely slay those who oppose us in this venture."

Korvalis is power hungry and vain. Power is the only thing he cares about, respects, or desires. However, he also knows that power comes in many shapes and sizes. His own goal is to become dragon disciple; a kind v of compensation for the fact that he is not a full-blooded Naga.

I haven't respecced him or bought any new gear for him since he got his first Chronicle sheet. Will do that soon.

"Close the door," Ambrus Valsin murmurs as the team gathers in his office. "Let me start by saying, this mission is not for dissemination among other members of the Society." The chamberlain of the Grand Lodge gives everyone a serious look in turn before continuing. "This mission is not an investigation, just a simple, straightforward assignment, but that makes it no less important."

"I need you to book passage to the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, and cross over into Irrisen. You’re to head north and rendezvous with another team who have captured some-" Valsin pauses for a heartbeat before continuing. "persons of interest. We have reason to believe that these individuals have information on the Shadow Lodge cells that are refusing to reconcile with the Society under Grandmaster Torch’s leadership." Valsin’s expression becomes particularly grim at that point. "If these rogue cells are outright refusing amnesty, then they represent a clear threat to all of us. I need you to take charge of these captives and get them out of Irrisen safely and quietly. Once you’re clear of Irrisen, a larger extraction team will take custody of them and bring them in for questioning. Of course, we will cover the expense of your travel in full, and provide maps to lead you to the meeting point in Irrisen. Because of the nature of the mission and Irrisen itself, you’ll be meeting the other team in the field, away from what passes for civilization up there. The team you’ll be getting the prisoners from will show you the best route out of Irrisen, and the castellan of Trollheim has agreed to grant you passage through his lands. You are responsible for avoiding unexpected trouble between the handoff and Trollheim."

Valsin gestures for the team to depart, but pauses, staring at his fireplace for a moment before adding, "Wait. You need to know this. Your prisoners will be goblins. The Shadow Lodge separatists made extensive use of the sadistic creatures as soldiers and servants, and as much as you may want to throttle them, please remember that we need them alive." Then with a final nod for luck, the venture-captain dismisses the group.

If you do some research before beginning, roll once for the check and then read each spoiler up to the point that you succeeded the check. For instance, if you roll a 17, you may read the DC 10 and DC 15 spoilers, but not the DC 20.

Knowledge (local) DC 15:

Goblins are insane and sadistic. They have a strong hatred of dogs and a fear of horses, both rivaled only by their unnatural love of fire and destruction.

Knowledge (local) DC 20:

Making the journey in 3-1/2 days doesn’t allow for much time for hunting, unless the party uses the extra day allowed by the extraction team. Provisions for the journey goblins will be provided, but they’ll need supervision. Goblins have fast metabolisms and find hunger painful. If they’re not watched, they’ll eat their rations all at once.

Knowledge (local) DC 25:

Tying the goblins up and forcing them to march will be problematic. They’ll continually complain, and will stumble and fall on purpose, slowing the rate of travel.

Knowledge (geography) DC 15:

The party will be crossing a disputed border between two warring countries—Irrisen and the Lands of the Linnorm Kings. Getting too close to the actual border before you’re ready to cross will invite trouble. There is no easy way to cross the Iceflow River, which forms the border between the nations north of the mighty Rimeflow River, without attracting unwanted attention from Ulfen defenders who may not look kindly on goblins passing through their lands.

Knowledge (geography) DC 20:

It is eternally winter in Irrisen, and a lot of food is imported. There are no crops or easily obtained foodstuffs except those gained through fishing and some hunting of migratory animals.

Knowledge (geography) DC 25:

Snow goblins are citizens in Irrisen. This is definitely true in Whitethrone, but one might expect them to have some degree of social rank everywhere else.

OK - looks like most have posted, so I will continue - but if anyone still needed a purchase, just put it in your next post.

The party’s journey from Absalom to northwest Irrisen is long but mostly uneventful. It is extremely cold. The camp you seek stands approximately 53 miles north of the Rimeflow River and 6 miles east of the Iceflow River. Run by Ragna Lightfoot, a ranger of some fame, the group you meet consists of six Ulfen rangers and druids, including Ragna herself. When you arrive, Ragna’s team are already in the process of breaking down their shelters in preparation to move. Lightfoot greets you.

"About time you got here. I was just about to give up hope. Here are your charges," she says, as she points to 6 goblins standing in little more than ragged furs.

"Here is a map for getting to the hamlet of Harvest’s End, where I think you’ll have the easiest time crossing the Rimeflow River."

As the group finishes packing, she tosses a sack to you. "4 days’ worth of rations for each of you, including them." she says, pointing to the goblins. "Make sure they get to the destination before you go back to your cushy homes. I would hate for this to have been a waste of my time."

"I found giving them nicknames helped keep them in line, but you can come up with your own."

Then under her breath, as she turns to leave, "Good riddance..."

For sake of keeping track of things, perhaps each of you can name one of the goblins.

Charn's responses to the plans and travels have been -

relief and openness at going back North - he's a tribesman too.
touchy and defensive about any 'racism' about the goblinoids. weird as he doesn't want to identify with them, but also doesn't want people to be too dismissive.

during the journey up north Charn focuses on competing with the guys in various tests of strength and man-hood, whilst trying to charm and schmooze Cirri.

When they arrive and meet Ragna, when he puts on his friendly face.

Greetings, I believe I've heard of you. You are known in these lands. We have travelled hard, as you well know the road does not always lend it self to speedy walking, especially in the North. None the less, apologies if we have kept you waiting.

I am sure we all appreciate your suggestions on how we proceed. Have you any thoughts on what/when/how the opposition may act to rescue these goblins?

At the suggestion that the team might duck out, Charn bristles, draws up to his full 7'.

Do not doubt that I am a man of honour, I am sure my companions and I will fulfil this task.

Korvalis purchases a sack and five more days of rations before they leave. He carries the sack thrown over his shoulder so he can easily drop it if he needs to move quickly. He adds the new rations from the Druid to the sack as well.

He doesn't speak much on the trip unless spoken to, preferring to observe the others and take in their stories.

--

He introduces himself to one of the goblins. "My name is Korvalis. You must be an important goblin to be captured as a prisoner like this."

Cirri: Not sure how that spell works exactly, but a Hunters magic is divine.. I should be able to cast it for you. Either you can ask me for it when you feel it might be handy, or we can assume that should you need it, it was cast. That is up to the GM as well, I guess.

Jazmine stoically accepts the assignment, and then spends the trip slightly.. off.. from the others. Not quite with, but not separate either. Mostly she and Giggles just play fetch while keeping an eye on everything around them.

Once they meet the ranger, Jazmine bows her head respectfully to the rangers and druids and listens intently to what Ragna has to say before turning to the goblins. "Hello. I am not inclined to like you, and you are not inclined to like me, but I hope that we can come to a mutual understanding. Do any of you speak common? I know that your guards have probably not neglected you, but if you would like a snack before we set off, it can be arranged."

The goblin prisoners are fairly indifferent towards you, not really seeing you as much different that the last set of captors, or even the Shadow Lodge masters before that. Your attempts to be diplomatic do have a generally positive effect. However, see my post in the discussion group.

Jazmine's goblin eats the snacks it was given very quickly, and looks up grinning ready for more.

Once everyone is ready, you are able to move out. You make reasonable time, although the goblins are a bit of a handful. They generally behave, plodding along when prodded, although they whine and complain a lot about being hungry.

A narrow southern pass winds its way through steep, icy hills, the frigid wind periodically dusting all in its path with a layer of snow. Two ancient stone watchtowers stand on either side of the path between two nearly vertical bluffs rising thirty feet to either side, just as Lightfoot’s map indicated they would. The eighty-foot-wide path narrows to a mere twenty-five feet in width between the two fifty-foot towers.

Perception, DC 12:
Snow has been knocked off the battlements, specifically on the sections facing the path.

As the group makes it way, Kamda keeps Stew on a tight leash, making sure the goblin can't cause any trouble. When the towers become visible, he holds up a hand.
Hold up, look at tha tops o' tha towers. Tha snow's been knocked offa tha battlements, see? Mighten there be an ambush comin. Be on yer guard.

Before moving out Charn again addresses the Goblin, switching to Common as he does so.

What is your name? We're on this road for the next few days and it would be good to know what to call you... In the meantime here have some food.

Charn continues to try to be friendly, going so far to eat alongside the Goblin.

As they travel through the landscape Charn has his shield and mace in hand in case of trouble.

The goblins start chowing down on the food they are given.

To Charn, his goblin simply looks up and says in a loud voice, "Animal!" It is hard to tell if that was an answer to his question, or if he just doesn't speak common. Although, he hasn't said anything else in goblin either, so perhaps he just knows the one word.

Stinker finishes his rations, and then releases a noxious smell. The other goblins giggle as he delivers an evil looking grin.
