Standing in the room is a half-elven man of Osirion decent, but strangely with bright red hair. He wears a breastplate and carries a longsword and buckler by his side. You see a spell component pouch as well.

I am Sabni Kabaan, a carpenter who hails from Sothis. I lived there for most of my life just making furniture for a living until one day I discovered the hammer I used for carpentry started taking on magical properties, enhancing my work. I didn't know what was happening at first, but found out that I could then focus my power into items, I decided I wanted to take up training this skill, and hence I joined the Pathfinder Society.

I am not so proficient with weapons, but you will find that if you use weapons, I have the ability to enhance them in combat, as well as enhancing other combative abilities.

Dot need to make sure his sheet is fully up to date. If we wanted to try for high tier I do have a monk. Would prefer this guy.

"Who the f~*~ asked? Least the little guy can keep his damn gob shut." Growls the six-foot-something pile of muscles, leathers and axes standing uncomfortably close. The pile-err man is covered in eldritch tattoos that resolve into the Common tongue just above his heart. There they declare that: This Ink Don’t Run in big scary letters.

He spits on the ground regardless of what is currently covering it to punctuate his point.

"I asked him if you must know! I like knowing what the people in my party can do! If you have a problem with others talking keep your gob shut!" The little gnome, with bright orange hair, says climbing onto the table to get to (almost) eye level. "So what do you do you big sack of muscles you?" He asks with a wink.

Sabni looks over the Ulfen man and gives a disapproving glance, then a slight smirk. Not a good way to start off a mission...having the person who can enchant your weapon, heal your wounds, make you stronger, and make you as tall as a giant Sabni says with a bit of smugness. Perhaps we can be a little bit more delicate with the niceties now?

Sabni then smiles at Puk. And what tricks do you bring to us, fair gnome? It's only fair to ask you the same question.

Falshin stands as the others introduce themselves and explain their abilities. "Greetings all, I am Falshin Korvaska." The young, Varisian man introduces himself with a slight bow. He wears simple, worn clothing save for an extravagant scarf which he has tied around his waist like a sash. "I use the power of the Aether to keep you all healed and to harm our enemies. I am also quite useful at picking locks and disarming pesky traps." He eyes the large ulfen man with a weary eye. "Pleasure to meet you all. This is my first mission for the Society! I cannot begin to describe how exciting this is for me." He says with a large grin.

"Yeah you said that already. Remember? And what mission? We're just standing here in whatever the Hells this place is supposed to be. Hells, I didn't even see that table until Shorty there climbed up on it to look at my knee." Agirran says waving his hands at the blank green screen behind them all. "And before you tell me what it is you do again, I'm telling you that was all rhetorical."

Falshin Korvaska wrote:

Agirran slaps his forehead and lets the hand slide down his reddening face. "Gods. They're looping. Should have insisted Natula take this one. She's got more patience--and evocation spells." He mutters to himself.

... 6... 7... 8... 9... 10. Agirran let's out his breath realizing there's no point in getting angry--that's for barbarians.

"Alright, listen if this were any sort of mission then there'd be a Venture-Captain here and five or six agents. The V.C. would have our dossiers so that we could read up on one another--well maybe a leaflet in Shorty's case--and you wouldn't have to go introducing yourselves like you were ads for a Katapeshy slave market. Then maybe there wouldn't be all this useless nattering before the other 'agents' show up for the 'mission' and you all go and say the same things again wastin' all the available æther. Git me?"

He crosses his arms and goes quiet, but it is a furious sort of quiet.

LOL. FYI, don't take what I'm saying as me being insulted. It's how my character would handle it. :)

Fine. I won't talk about what I do then. I'll talk about you. You're a jerk who doesn't take to any social cues, and doesn't make any effort to get along with anyone. I simply said what I did and you jumped down my throat. If that's you're philosophy, fine, but I'd still like to be able to interact with the rest of the people gathered here in a civil manner. So SHUT IT. You're now the one causing the commotion and talking too much. Sabni lets out a smile.

Falshin looks at Agirran with a bemused smile as he decides whether to retort, or simply ignore that large Ulfen. When Sabni interjects, he decides the latter, considering the half-elf did a much better job at it than he likely would have done. 'Perhaps a mental exercise would help pass the time...' He removes a deck of cards from a pocket of his bandolier and holds in out in his palm. He watches it intently as the deck begins to float upward and move about the room...

Welcome, all! I think we are waiting for SirPeter to either finish up his current scenario (or switch to a level 1 pregen since we look to be playing low tier). We also have one that dropped out (who was level 4) , so I can recruit one more, or we can proceed with 5. Besides SirPeter, I also need PFS# for Sabni in the Discussion (I found the others). Meanwhile, we will keep the roleplaying going by giving you some background...

Trial By Machine takes place in the Red Redoubt of Karamoss, a ruined siege castle and vast dungeon complex located in the Cairnlands outside of Absalom.

You received a letter (and you received a letter, and you received a letter)...

Idle Pathfinders are Pathfinders needing work. Having a bit of downtime is no excuse to sit around and let our skills lapse! So I have come up with a training exercise for you and a few others waiting around the Grand Lodge for a job. I trust you are familiar with the Red Redoubt? If not, for shame! It’s an important part of Absalom’s history. You might want to spend a few minutes researching it before heading out. While it is technically a “cleared” ruin, it’s a perfect location to test your skills.

Another team has spent the last few days practicing their own dungeoneering skills by establishing an obstacle course in the Redoubt’s upper levels. Now it’s up to you to go and see how well they’ve done. The course follows a specific path—if you come across a symbol of three red dots inside a triangle, that means “do not enter.” Don’t go wandering—I do not want to send a third team to find you if you get lost. Otherwise, your response to the challenge is up to you. Bring your own gear, make your own plans, solve the puzzles, and bypass the traps. You’ll know when you reach the finish line. I’d wish you good luck, but skilled Pathfinders don’t need luck.

I trust you’ll impress us,
Venture-Captain Ambrus Valsin

You may purchase any additional gear or such now, as you like. Let me know when you are ready to go. In addition, you might recall a few things:

Roll one Knowledge (Local) check, and open all of the spoilers up to your roll:

15+:
While the Redoubt has no permanent residents, bandits, outcasts, or the occasional monster sometimes use it as a lair. Infighting for territory among these groups usually nullifies their threat, so Absalom’s authorities don’t interfere.

20+:
One band known to lair in the ruins there is the Blood-Red Raiders, a small gang of bandits that mostly robs lone travelers.

25+:
A young human man with pale skin and odd tattoos—supposedly a student expelled from the Clockwork Cathedral—has recently joined the BloodRed Raiders.

Roll one Knowledge (arcana) check, and open the spoiler if you make DC 20 or better:

20+:
Karamoss was a Numerian wizard known as the “Machine Mage.” He had advanced knowledge of mechanical constructs, gained from decades of study within the Silver Mount. He was said to be part machine himself.

Roll one Knowledge (engineering) check, and open all of the spoilers up to your roll:

15+:
The Red Redoubt is constructed almost entirely of a strange, dark red metal. Supposedly, the entire structure rose in a single night.

20+:
The red metal of the Redoubt is called djezeteel—a unique alloy of iron and the liquid skymetal djezet invented by Karamoss.

Roll one Knowledge (history) check, and open all of the spoilers up to your roll:

15+:
The Red Redoubt of Karamoss was a siege castle created more than 1,000 years ago by the “machine mage” Karamoss in a failed attempt to conquer Absalom.

20+:
Karamoss’s armies included initial waves of hobgoblins, followed by legions of strangely intelligent constructs. After several years and some close calls, the fight turned against Karamoss and the Redoubt fell.

25+:
While the Redoubt’s upper dungeons have been cleared, many levels lie hidden beneath. Karamoss himself was never found; some say he lives on below.

Knowledge (Local): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
There aren't any permanent residents in the Redoubt, but bandits, outcasts, and monsters often reside there. They fight so much with each other that they pose no threat to Absalom. A particularly famous one in there is the Blood-Red Raiders, who just recently recruited a young tattooed human man who was a student expelled from the Clockwork Cathedral.

The Red Redoubt was a more-than-millennium old siege castle created by the machine mage Karamoss, who tried to conquer Absalom. He liked to use hobgoblins and some intelligent construct creatures for his armies. He eventually lost the siege and the Redoubt fell.

A lithe woman with a olive-colored skin, and long platinum hair comes into the room. Her golden eyes are as expressive as the elaborate tattoos that crisscross her body.

She is dressing red clothes which is also adorned with runes, as the similar patterns adorning her skin.

The sorcerer arrives in time to listen the heated discussion and the half-elf's explanation about their task.

"Well done, mr. Sabni Kabaan. You did your homework well", she smiled sympathetically at him.

She makes sure to stay as far away as possible from Agirran, "he is so disgusting".

"I think we are ready to go, right, buddies?", the varisian wakes up and holds her quarterstaff, walkin' at the exit's direction.

Impressed with her tattoos, (as he has scrawl work of his own) Agirran makes the attempt to make out their pattern hazarding guesses at the bits he can't read for modesty's sake. Staring, he imagines the dips, curves swells and flat plains of gold the swirls must cover in order to be complete.

"Psst. Shorty, when she said that last bit: 'right, buddies?' do you suppose she was talking to us?"

He spontaneously uses his cold blast ability allowing him to walk straight again.

You head out, marching to the Red Redoubt.

The noonday sun shines brightly in a cloudless sky, but the rugged landscape diffuses the light as if through a stained glass window composed entirely of crimson panes. Deep red metal walls, broken but mostly untouched by rust even a millennium, form an obstacle course through the landscape. Clearly, when the Red Redoubt of Karamoss was named, it was not done ironically. The marked path through the siege castle’s ruins leads to a large central chamber open to the sky above. Aside from the metallic flooring, walls, and rubble, nothing remains of the so-called “machine mage” Karamoss or his lost armies. Refuse, old campfire rings, and other signs of life attest to the place being a haven for scavengers and vagabonds. The chamber is filled with a large, circular shaft in the metal floor, with smoothly rolled edges that demonstrate superbly uniform craftsmanship. A rope ladder descends into the pit, anchored by pitons hammered into the floor panels.

I don't mind going. Sabni straps his buckler on and casts Dancing Lights, sending them down the hole, then also uses a charge of Longstrider off of his wand.

Hopefully it's a DC 5 because 6 Climb is his take 10...this is all assuming the ladder is secure.

Well that posted a lot later than I imagined it would. Sabni, if you like go ahead first and Agirran and his big axe will keep to the arcanist's normal position within the party marching order.

I suppose now would be a good time to set a marching order... My suggestion would be Sabni, Falshin, Agirran, Seoni, and then Puk. Sabni has the highest AC of the party and the best Perception score. Falshin can take the next position as I think he's the trapmonkey in the party. Puk has the next best AC, which is why I think he'd be a good a rear-guard. What do you all think?

Falshin shakes his head at Agirran's bravado, but simply waits his turn to climb down the ladder should it prove to be sturdy enough to descend.

Sabni has no problem being up front at all...just keep in mind he does NOT deal damage (well, OK, he has burning hands...). :p But he has no problem taking the first hits.

Sabni heads down the rope ladder.

The ladder is secure, and you all climb down.

The entrance shaft opens into the center of a red steel chamber. The floor beneath the shaft is canted at a slight angle; it seems to have originally been a circular platform that fit flush with the rest of the room but at some point unevenly sank a foot or so. The floors around the room’s perimeter are solid and even, with a textured surface to give better footing on the smooth metal. The walls are riveted metal plates, fallen or torn off in places to reveal solid rock behind. Recessed slabs of metal with adjacent panels, presumably exits, are centered on each wall. The northern panel glows dimly, illuminating scorch marks and glistening red stains around it.

The red stains are wet.... but not blood! It appears to be red dye.

Survival, DC 13:

You find tracks of what appears to be six humanoids, leading through the north exit. Now that you have identified them, they are fairly easy to track due to the red dye.

Falshin suddenly looks down at the ground upon realizing its red dye and spots several footprints heading toward the north. "Looks like 6 sets of footprints heading through here! Perhaps this is part of our test! Let's follow them."

You head down the long hallway, and it takes a full 5 minutes before you come across anything.

The corridor ahead (about 20 feet from you) branches in four directions. North and west, the tunnels continue unobstructed, but the eastern branch is blocked with a stout metal grating marked with three crimson circles within a triangle. A large, white “X” is scrawled in chalk on the floor in the center of the intersection.

Falshin recalls the warning of the three crimson circles within the triangle. "We do want to enter the eastern branch. The letter clearly indicated to not enter any location marked with that symbol. Which way shall we go first?" He examines the "X" from a distance before approaching it, checking to ensure their comrades have not left them any surprises...

Alright, so we weren't supposed to go to places with the triangle and the three dots. So...North or West?

Any tracks?

Seoni does sense a magical presence on each side wall that you are passing as you approach the X.

Puk hums to himself, a braudy little tune. He casts dancing lights every few minutes and sets them out in front of the party so they can see. "North it is." He says, starting that way, keeping his lights in front. "Magic you say." Puk stops and helps look at the X.

Since take 10 takes a bit of time, it seems safe to say that you all are going to concentrate the detect magic for a little longer.

You cannot quite pinpoint the spell, but you eventually conclude that there is an illusion spell on each side wall.
