I am still trying to learn the rules. Help me understand my options. I have a bear who is "charmed" my my magic for 24 hours. He is my friend. And I intend to try to be his friend. And I know that does not mean that he is friendly to my party. So what are my options. Would he follow me and attack someone who attacked me? With a handle Animal Check could I get him to attack someone? Could I get him to guard something? Would Speak with Animals help at all?

As far as I have understood the rule Animal Friendship puts the Charm condition on the animal (which kind of sucks in 5e) and Charmed is defined as;

A charmed creature can’t Attack the charmer or target the charmer with harmful Abilities or magical effects.

The charmer has advantage on any ability check to interact socially with the creature.

So I guess it's DM's discretion if they would actually help fight... but it also says that damage would break the Friendship spell...

I dunno if this helps or not, can wait till GMF tunes in I guess. I think that your thought process of Charm Animal, then Speak with Animals would be an awesome way to work around this to tell him we are friends etc etc. good thinking!


Re: Charmed: Just because someone is charmed, it doesn't mean that they will do anything you tell them to. If you can speak directly to them, e.g. with speak with animals, you can have a more in-depth conversation and use the persuasion skill. I still don't think that a creature would act against its nature. so you couldn't convince a bear to go attack a group of zombies for you. It's still a wild animal. What you can convince an animal to do for you really depends on the animal.

There is a spell dominate beast that does let you control the actions directly.

Ok. For now I'll just be happy that the spell allowed us to bypass a fight with an animal Lichen did not want to have to kill.

Thanks GM-F, will be away longer than I thought, spent the week in Clemson putting it back together and they sent us to Orlando to put it back together. Hey guys, what's our move here? Enjoying Dolgin's smithing campaign, and we could entertain the girls disappearance. Do we want to just finish our delivery first of all and come back this way or persue one of those others? I believe we only have until the 31st to complete the delivery?


The missing girl is apprenticed to an alchemist in Thurmaster. You're delivering a package to Eben the alchemist who happens to live in Thurmaster... Just sayin'

Also just as a reminder, several of you do have specific motivations for being thin this part of the game world. I don't know what your plans are for sharing them with the rest of the party, but feel free to be proactive about what you want to do.

Dolgrin's smithing can fall to the wayside if the others wish to move forward, for some reason was thinking we arrived in town middayish, so was looking at half of that smith work being done during that afternoon and the rest falling in the next morning. Not delaying us a full day.

Looks like we are on the 20th, have to the 31st to make delivery, and 40 miles to go....

You have tons of time, so spending a extra day isn't a big deal. Also, Dolgrin has no stakes in delivering the chest, so it is also reasonable for Dolgrin to stay behind (a don't think Lichen and Daryl have any stake in this either).

It is with regret and sadness that I'm going to step away from these boards for a while. It's a combination of many things, and the frustration with the board performance just pushed me to do what needed doing. I've got some things that are taking a higher priority in life at the moment. It's been a real pleasure gaming with you all, and hopefully life will give an opportunity to share this hobby we all love in the future...
