"What are your plans?" he asks. "It doesn't seem that you're content with offering condolences and leaving again."

Tamara is a bit hesitant to tell the full truth behind what they have learned as she's afraid to spook the man. At the same time it's hard to get what they want without sharing what they've learned. "Before he died, the professor left a message behind. The whole town might be in danger from a sinister organization called the Whispering Way. That's what he went to investigate at Harrowstone. I want to find out the truth behind that. That's why we came here, to find out more. I'm sure you know more about Harrowstone than me. Could you tell us details of the fire? Maybe there are other events in the town of note that we should know about?"

Narrator

"I never heard anything about that organization you talk of. And I also know of no one who was seen here the last weeks."

"But if you want to know something about Ravengro, I guess you're lucky." Councilman Muricar replies taking a seat on his desk. "I'm the town historian." he proudly proclaims.

"The Harrowstone was built in 4594AR. It was designed as a prison for the worst criminals to ensure the public is safe from them forever. As it's reputation grew it became THE prison in all Ustalav. The criminals were brought from everywhere in the country either to be imprisoned or executed in the Harrowstone."

"Ravengro was founded to support the prison. The guards lived here. The farmers, bakers and butchers supplied the food, the smith's the tools. Everything revolved around the prison."

"But in 4661AR - fifty years ago - there was a revolt that led to the big fire that destroyed the prison. And Ravengro is now just another town far off." He seems to miss that importance somehow.

"The biggest thing that happened in the last years was as one of farmer William's sheep was killed by a wolf. The whole town was in an uproar until the beast was found and shot after a week. But nothing else as far as I remember."

Tamara smiles when Muricar claims he's the town historian. "It's fortunate we've ran into you as the town historian. You'll certainly be able to tell us something of value, even if we can't figure out what's valuable yet."

"The good professor Lorrimor seemed to think that knowing who died in the fire would be of help. Do you have a list by any chance? Even if you don't have it, I'm sure you remember at least some names and information about them."

After listening to what the historian has to say Tamara finds another question. "It seems like not everyone were as fond of the professor in town as you. Could you tell us what other friends he had? And if there are anyone who particularly despised him that might be a clue as well."

Narrator

"No, nothing of this kind. And I'm pretty happy about that. It's bad enough with the rumors. If any of these were true..." Muricar replies and leaves the rest to imagination.

Turning to Miss Hart he tells "If you want to know who died in the fire you can simply take a look at the memorial at the river. The names of all the guards that died in that fire are written there."

"As for the professor, I think you give me too much credit here. Don't get me wrong. I think he was a nice guy. But his obsession with the undead and other such abominations was rather scary at times. I want to know what is happening in this town and so I met now and then with him and we talked over a glass of bourbon. But I don't think I qualify as his friend. To be honest, in this town no one would like to be called a friend of the Professor." He takes another sip of his bourbon.

"What rumors are those? We heard towns folk claim the professor was a Necromancer, which is not true, are there others we need to know about?"

Herm rubs at his temples, "So really the Professor owned a house here for how long but was near on hated by the town?"

Narrator

"It's just old wives tales. And he wasn't hated. There are just not much people here who really liked him. They talked behind his back. But he didn't care much about the peoples opinions."

"Only the lack of interest of Father Grimburrow he couldn't understand. He repeatedly stated that the former clergy were more willing and capable to deal with the threats the Father ignores. At least in the Professors opinion. I don't see a threat." Muricar replies.

Male Skinwalker (Bloodmarked) Unchained Rogue (Phantom Thief/Relic Raider) 1

"So the deceased guards are on the memorial, what about the prisoners? Is there a ledger somewhere? We have reason to believe that the professor's presence at Harrowstone had something to do with one of the former occupants, though we don't know if it was a guard or a prisoner."

Narrator

"The prisoners? I don't think someone cared about them after the fire. And before the fire they didn't even bury the executed ones in the Restlands. They must have had their own burial grounds."

"The temple of Pharasma has extensive documentation about who is born in or dies in Ravengro. But I doubt they have such records about the prisoners. But I don't really know. You would have to talk to Father Grimburrow about that." Muricar replies.

I don't think Father Grimburrow i going to be willing to help, the man wants nothing to do with any of this.

Narrator

"No one here wants anything to do with that." Muricar replies. "It was a horrible thing for the town. Many men died and the source for almost all of the jobs was gone in one day. The town never recovered from that. There is nothing to win by digging up these old stories."

"And so far nothing to lose by not digging them up."

Tamara shakes her head. "Well, I certainly feel we do have something to lose by not figuring out what's happening. Where exactly is this memorial did you say?"

She's about ready to say good bye when she thinks about something. "Oh, as the town historian, maybe you know some of the stories from the criminals that were in the prison? It's not an exhaustive list, but it would be something. If not, well I wouldn't want to take much more of your time on this worrisome topic."

---
After the historian answer the last rounds of questions Tamara is ready to leave. "Thank you for taking the time to answer us. You have been very helpful. Hopefully we'll manage to make use of the knowledge."

I would like to go to the marketplace to speak with the two other "friends". If the memorial is on the way it would be nice to stop there.

Narrator

The memorial is labeled O at the lower left of the map besides Q which is the shack of Gibs.

"I knew the old clergy too, but as I am not really interested in undead and other abominations I never talked to neither the old nor the new clergy about these topics."

"Why the prison burned I don't know. There should have been an investigation but I know of no result and haven't heard who did that investigation. I could have been someone from Lepidstadt or even Caliphas."

"The memorial is just down the road, past the temple over the bridge and then after the bridge you turn right and follow the river. You can't miss it."

"And about the prisoners. I have no clue. I know the basics about the prison because it's related to the founding of Ravengro. But beyond that? It's of no interest to me."

Muricar empties his glass. "I ask you to do me a favour. I would ask you to leave it alone but you seem to be set to investigate. Please keep a low profile about that. This is a peaceful place and I want it to stay that way. No need to worry the people. And if you find something - and I hope you don't - please keep me informed."

"So the memorial first, then to pick up Tairen, then the others mentioned? Sounds like you have a solid plan for us miss."

Narrator

The group says their good bye and leaves the councilman. They walk past the temple and through the bridge over the river. A small trail leads past a house and a shack along the river. The memorial can be seen from quite some distance.

Other than the looming ruins of Harrowstone on a nearby hill, Ravengro’s most distinctive landmark is this 25-foot-tall, moss-covered stone statue that overlooks the river. The statue depicts a proud, muscular human man dressed in leathers and wielding a truncheon — a depiction of Warden Lyvar Hawkran.

A total of 25 names are chiseled into the statue’s stone base.

James Smith, John Anderson, Robert Clark, Michael Wright, William Mitchell, David Johnson, Richard Thomas, Charles Williams, Joseph Jackson, Thomas Lewis, Christopher Hill, Daniel Roberts, Paul Jones, Mark White, Donald Scott, George Turner, Kenneth Brown, Steven Harris, Edward Walker, Brian Green, Ronald Phillips, Anthony Davis, Kevin Martin, Jason Hall, Vesorianna Hawkran.

Take 10 Research Whispering Way w/Knowledge (arcana): 10 + 8 + 2 = 20

As his new companions return Tairan looks up from the books in the Professor's library. He blinks and looks around the room.

"I followed the professor's research about the Whispering Way. He was quite thorough, though I'm not sure that I've discovered everything which he had. What did you discover talking to the professor's friends?"

I'll assume that the other PCs fill me in on their interactions. At the memorial:

Tairan runs his hands over the memorial, then produces a journal and inkpen to record the names, leaving room near each name to record later notes.

Tairan also examines the monument with detect magic.

If allowed the time, Tairan carefully studies each name to see if any of them are more worn than the others (indicating that over time that name has been touched more), and also looks for secret compartments, hidden messages, etc.

The names bear no historical significance beyond the obvious

Also the names look a bit weathered as the monument is about 50 years old but no signs of manipulation are seen.

It also has no magical aura.

The Whispering Way is a sinister organization of necromancers that has been active in the Inner Sea region for thousands of years.

Agents of the Whispering Way often seek alliances with undead creatures, or are themselves undead. The Whispering Way’s most notorious member was Tar-Baphon, the Whispering Tyrant, although the society itself has existed much longer than even that mighty necromancer.

The Whispering Way itself is a series of philosophies that can only be transferred via whispers — the philosophies are never written or spoken of loudly, making the exact goals and nature of the secretive philosophy difficult for outsiders to learn much about.

At the memorial (I presume that my previous Knowledge (history) check regarding the names also covers the warden):

"None of these names stand out to me as being particularly important or memorable. At least they haven't shown up in my studies. If there is a library in Ravengro somewhere regarding Harrowstone we could probably do more research there. You said that the entire town grew up to support the prison? In that case, there is a good chance that some records escaped the fire in private residences. Did Councilman Muricar mention any such caches of information?"

"I don't detect any magical auras or hidden meanings in the monument itself."

At the Lorrimor residence.

"First we talked to father Grimburrow. It turns out he wants nothing to do with Harrowstone or the professor. Nothing we said could persuade him. It's a shame too, because the records Petros mentioned are now inaccessible to us. Then we talked to Councilman Muricar. He claims to be the town historian and he seemed quite helpful. He told us of the memorial, but sadly he didn't know of much else that could be of use to use. He had no stories or memories of the inmates. I suspect we need to either get that information from the temple of Phrasma which is barred to us, or from Harrowstone itself. He warned us to not spread too much about what we are doing as the townsfolk might react negatively."

At the memorial

"Well, the temple of Phrasma was mentioned to have records of everyone dying or being born. Sadly I don't see how we can get a hold of those given Father Grimburrow's attitude."
