"Stand back fools, or his death will be on your heads."

His hands glow warmly on the villagers wounds.

"Gibs, you go home in an instant. If I see you here again today I'll have Sheriff Caeller lock you up."

He comes to see what is wrong with the man lying on the ground. He takes a short look and speaks a short prayer dousing all around in golden light.

"We knew him as a good father and a loyal and helpful man. Many didn't understand what he did and how should they. He was a Professor at the Lepidstadt University. He was like an orchid in a field of daisies. But those who really knew him will keep him in fond memory. It is tragic that he lost his life before his years were full ..."

After giving a short sermon about life and death and Pharasma guiding the deceased he asks "Is there someone who would like to say a few words of consolation to the congregation?"

Darius steps forward and faces the congregation.

"The Professor was a kind, generous, amazing man who lived a full life, and accomplished more than one should be able to in one lifetime.

I see his kindness..." He says looking at Hailiss.

"His generosity... He continues, looking across at Spugnoir.

"...in the faces of everyone assembled here today.

Even in the face of danger he put the lives of others before his own.

I remember on one such expedition, he had asked me to accompany him. As he often did when he thought he might encounter something long dead. It was a crypt he had gotten the location of. Back in Osirion I believe it was." Darius grins to himself and laughs softly "That stinking camel."

He continues.
"We had gone into this crypt and where a few levels in when a nasty little monstrosity wrapped in ancient cloth caught the whole expedition by surprise.

The Professor threw himself at one of the other members of the group to get him out of the way and ended up almost falling into what seemed like an bottomless well. Not giving his own safety a second thought.

As his grasp on the ledge failed I managed to pull him back while the rest of the group fended off the returned dead king."

Darius pauses for a moment, reflecting on a time long past. takes a breath and concludes.

"And it was that selflessness that brought us all here today and touched our lives in ways that have forever changes us.

He looks over to the coffin and smiles warmly. "You will be missed old friend." Then returns back to his place beside the group.

The few people from Ravengro who attend the funeral stand around the grave with somber faces and listen to the short speeches the friends of Professor Lorrimor speak. Also Councilman Hearthmount will join us later to open and read the last will of my father and the Professor wanted you to be there." She then leads the way to her home. She wants to get away from that place and back into the safe and comforting walls of her home.

Narrator

The way from the grave back to the Lorrimor home leads out of the walled in cemetery and a short distance through a grove that separates the Restlands from the town. From there the way leads through almost all of Ravengro. Ravengro is parted by a river flowing through it's midst. To the west of the river lie the temple of Pharasma and the few stately homes of the wealthier part of the population.
On the eastern shore are the majority of the houses of the average villager. From the restlands in the north the way leads over the river through a wooden bridge with a roof large enough for a cart with two horses.

After the bridge is a posting pole. A board where the council informs about news and some job offers are pinned.

Some of the houses along the way have signs telling about the business of their owners. The first one is to the left a short distance after the bridge. It reads 'The Unfurling Scroll'. Down the road follows the central place of the village where the market is twice a week and where the social life of the village happens mostly. In the middle of this round place stands a simple wooden gazebo at the center of a grassy circular plaza.

Around the place are the town hall which is the largest building here standing to the east. Clockwise from there are the 'Silken Purse', 'Ravengro Forge', 'Jominda's Apothecary', and the 'Ravengro General Store'. Also another posting pole stands here.

The way leads on, out of the center of the village and one of the last houses to the right is the Lorrimor home.

That man Gibs did not seem to take his rebuke by the father well. I wonder if the grave should be watched.... . Glancing ahead at Miss Lorrimor he thinks No, the poor woman has been through enough today, I should not add more burdens to her mind tonight. And an interesting reaction the priest had to that mans story. I wonder if it was the undead or tomb raiding that drew the reaction. Probably the walking dead given the history of this place.

Thank you for your warm hospitality Miss Lorrimor, I am Brother Grergof Varsk. Your father stopped by my monistary on one of his expeditions. He did not spend much time there, but as I said earlier, the time I did spend with him inspired me to both persue my course of study with much more focus, and to get myself out into the world. Narrator

It is Councilman Hearthmount. He greets Miss Lorrimor comes into the parlour and greets everyone present. "Good morning. I'm councilman Hearthmount and I'm here to read the last will of Professor Lorrimor." It is obvious that he is not happy about the situation that there are strangers involved in local matters and is in a hurry to get it done. Councilman Hearthmount produces a scroll case, shows that the professor’s personal seal is unbroken, then breaks the wax and opens the case. As he does, a small iron key falls out of the tube, clattering noisily onto the table. Undaunted by the key, the councilman begins to read.

"I, Petros Lorrimor, being of sound mind, do hereby commit to this parchment my last will and testament. Let it be known that, with the exception of the specific details below, I leave my home and personal belongings entire to my daughter Kendra. Use them or sell them as you see fit, my child.

Yet beyond the bequeathing of my personal effects, this document must serve other needs. I have arranged for the reading of this document to be delayed until all principals can be in attendance, for I have more than mere inheritance to apportion. I have two final favors to ask.

To my old friends, I hate to impose upon you all, but there are few others who are capable of appreciating the true significance of what it is I have to ask. As some of you know, I have devoted many of my studies to all manner of evil, that I might know the enemy and inform those better positioned to stand against it. For knowledge of one’s enemy is the surest path to victory over its plans.

And so, over the course of my lifetime, I have seen fit to acquire a significant collection of valuable but dangerous tomes, any one of which in the wrong circumstances could have led to an awkward legal situation. While the majority of these tomes remain safe under lock and key at the Lepidstadt University, I fear that a few I have borrowed remain in a trunk in my Ravengro home. While invaluable for my work in life, in death, I would prefer not to burden my daughter with the darker side of my profession, or worse still, the danger of possessing these tomes herself. As such, I am entrusting my chest of tomes to you, posthumously. I ask that you please deliver the collection to my colleagues at the University of Lepidstadt, who will put them to good use for the betterment of the cause.

Yet before you leave for Lepidstadt, there is the matter of another favor — please delay your journey one month and spend that period of time here in Ravengro to ensure that my daughter is safe and sound. She has no one to count on now that I am gone, and if you would aid her in setting things in order for whatever she desires over the course of this month, you would have my eternal gratitude. From my savings, I have also willed to each of you a sum of one hundred platinum coins. For safekeeping, I have left these funds with Embreth Daramid, one of my most trusted friends in Lepidstadt — she has been instructed to issue this payment upon the safe delivery of the borrowed tomes no sooner than one month after the date of the reading of this will.

I, Petros Lorrimor, hereby sign this will in Ravengro on this first day of Calistril in the year 4711AR"

The Councilman lays the Professors will onto the table and says "That's all. If you'd excuse me, I have another appointment. My condolences Miss Lorrimor. Good bye." And with that he shows himself out.

Narrator

The key fits the lock perfectly and opening the chest reveals several old tomes and one relatively new one. The newest tome sits on the top and bears the phrase “Read me now!” scratched into the leather cover.

The contents of the chest are:

The 'read me now' book

Open the book:

This is the journal of Professor Lorrimor. As one flips through the pages some entries are marked with red.

Ten Years Ago:
The Whispering Way is more than just a cabal of necromancers. I see that now. Undeath is their fountain of youth. Uncovering their motivation does not place me at ease as I thought it might. Their desire to be eternal simply makes them more dangerous.
Two Months Ago:
It is as I had feared. The Way is interested in something here in Ravengro. But what could it be?
One Month Ago:
Whatever the Way seeks, I am now convinced their goal is connected to Harrowstone. In retrospect, I suppose it all makes sense—the stories they tell about the ruins in town are certainly chilling enough. It may be time to investigate the ruins, but with everyone in town already being so worked up about them, I’d rather not let the others know about my curiosity—there’s plenty of folks hereabouts who already think I’m a demonologist or a witch or something. Ignorant fools.
Twenty Days Ago:
It is confirmed. The Way seems quite interested in something—no, strike that—someone who was held in Harrowstone. But who, specifically, is the Way after? I need a list of everyone who died the night of the fire. Everyone. The Temple of Pharasma must have such a list.
Eighteen Days Ago:
I see now just how ill prepared I was when I last set out for the Harrowstone. I am lucky to have returned at all. The ghosts, if indeed they were ghosts (for I did not find it prudent to investigate further) prevented me from transcribing the strange symbols I found etched along the foundation—hopefully on my next visit I will be more prepared. Thankfully, the necessary tools to defend against spirits are already here in Ravengro. I know that the church of Pharasma used to store them in a false crypt in the Restlands at the intersection between Eversleep and the Black Path. I am not certain if the current clergy even know of what their predecessors have hidden down below. If my luck holds, I should be able to slip in and out with a few borrowed items.
Seventeen Days Ago:
Tomorrow evening I return to the prison. It is imperative the Way does not finish. My caution has already cost me too much time. I am not sure what will happen if I am too late, but if my theory is right, the entire town could be at risk. I don’t have time to update my will, so I’ll leave this in the chest where it’ll be sure to be found, should the worst come to pass.

"Strange. These tomes, they don't really qualify as 'research'. It's more the sort of books that are liable to let the author wax perverse. I'm sure that there's some morsels of lore in there, to lure people to purchase it, but you'd end up knowing more about the mind of the author, than the subject matter, reading them end to end. I can't imagine why the professor would want these."

Brother Varsk takes each book as it is available and looks at it.

Miss Tarre, I was taught that sometimes knowing how those who you opposes think is just as valuable as knowing what they can do. Perhaps he was looking to know how the follows of there evils see themselves.

He pauses for a moment then turns to Kendra:
Miss Lorrimor, given your fathers lasts requests, it appears that we have been placed at your service for the next few weeks. So if you have something you need please let us know.

He hesitates then continues:
I know this is a painful time for you, and so I hesitate to ask, but your fathers journal contains some worry some information that appears be time sensitive. As such, I'm sorry but I must ask: what can you tell us about your fathers death, what he was working on before he died, do you know of any new tools he may have acquired a few days before he died and why the townsfolk reacted the way they did this afternoon?

"I don't know about new tools." Kendra replies. "But why the people reacted that way I know. They are stupid, superstitious, gullible and only need someone like that Gibs to lead them to such actions." she pants with rage.

Taking a sip from her tea to calm down again she continues "The Professor was investigating something at the Harrowstone. He didn't tell me what it was. He even sneaked out of the house that one night so I didn't notice. He was very tense all of the week before his death. I realized that he sneaked out when he wasn't there for breakfast and couldn't be found in his room or office and the whole house. I asked Sheriff Caeller to search for him at the Harrowstone. And there they found him. Smashed by a gargoyle statue that fell from the roof. I could only identify him by the clothes he was wearing." Kendra explains, her words becoming sobs more and more and at the end she is openly crying as she sees that horrible picture in her mind again.

Darius moves over to Kendra and puts a comforting hand on her shoulder.
"It has been a long and trying day dear. I think you should go get some rest."
He looks around at the party gather there.
"I'm sure the rest of us can see to ourselves for the rest of the evening yes?"

Kendra pulls her handkerchief out of her sleeve and dries her tears. "Thank you Darius, but I'm fine."

"And rest is the last I want. Being alone and staring at the walls with all the 'what would have been' and 'could I have prevented it' I had plenty the last days." She takes another piece of cake and her cup of tea hoping the attention will move on.

Thank you Miss, that helps significantly. I am very sorry you had to think about this again.

Since we will be here for some time, please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you. Even something as simple as having one of us accompanying you into town if you do not wish to be alone here would be the least we can do.

He sits and thinks for a minute then says:

Besides talking to the Phrasma's priest, may I suggest we should also talk to the Sherrif? He may have seen something of import when looking at this Harrowstone.
