Nante Once-Dead |
His eyes drop to Hemlock's wrist, as they have several times during the discussion...
HINT HINT, GM.
GM_Fenwick |
"I didn't think that I would be seeing a hero any time soon. Well, everyone knows who you are, but I don't think you know who I am. My name is Savah, and I am the armory mistress and proprietor of the shop. So, hero, how can I help you today?"
"I've spent more nights eating in my library then I have in my kitchen. Ah, what a life I lead..."
He unstopped the bottle of wine and pours glasses. He hand ones to you, toasts, "To knowledge," and drains his glass. After breaking and eating some of the bread, he says:
"You have good taste in wine, my friend. But I don't think that's why you're here. What do you wish to know?"
"Do you have something else you wish to speak to me about?"
Karl Sarvo |
"I prefer punching daggers though" Karl unearthed the mentioned dagger from its sheath and placed on the table for Savah to look at "But as I was saying, is there any particular things you need help with; maybe troublesome customers? Lots of shopkeepers in Korvosa paid to keep those away, or maybe you need someone to keep watch on the place? Make sure a shipment makes on time?" Gloved fingers extended with each inquiry the mercenary made.
Sarvin the Greedy |
Sarvin lifts up his own glass in toast and answers the question. Magic, a noble endeavor to sate a powerful lust, one that I know all too well. I seek ruins, tombs, artifacts, knowledge and above all else magic of the old empire. Magic is worth more then even gold and my desire for it is the fuel for my magic, I can tell you the secret to using Thassilion magic if you so desire... You might even learn how to use a bit of it yourself if you know how to work the old art...
Nante Once-Dead |
GM_Fenwick |
"Very well. I suppose that Mister Sarvo has a nice ring to it, but 'damn Cheliaxian' has a nice ring to it. As for troublesome customers, there aren't too many men that are willing to cross Hemlock and his guardsmen and aside from the occasional flare of passion and drunken brawl, I manage the shop with little problems. And we do have some excellent punching daggers in stock, as well as other noteworthy weapons. Would you like to see the catalog?"
"Unfortunately, I have no innate magic talent, and my younger years spent in an attempt to become a wizard were in vain. I was called "magically dead" by my peers. However, I am content with my position as a scholar of magical history and its multiple uses, despite my...inability. My old adventuring companions did not fault me for this, and I was still a valued member of the party. All I truly want is to have knowledge for its own sake and to prevent its use for those with ill will. I am willing to share some of my library to those that I take exception to, and we can negotiate the price of admission later.
"Now," he pauses to whet his throat, before resuming, "Where do you wish to begin?" He gestures for you to follow him into his library, in which multiple artifacts and tomes lay.
"The world is changing, brother, and I find myself caught between two cultures of time. I chose to move on and catch up with our fellow men, but do not think for one second that I snub my tribal heritage..."
Sarvin the Greedy |
Nonsense my friend, no one is truly magically "dead" as you put it, magic flows through us all and it can be learned although the methods to achieve this knowledge can vary from person to person. You may not find your knack with spells bit that may simply mean you are destined for a different form of magical knowledge... In Korvosa many folk ply the trade of alchemy, most are dabblers but some few learn the art and can achieve impressive results with it...
Do not lose heart, if a tiefling can learn magic in the hellhole of Korvosa then certainly you can learn a form of it as well... As for what I am searching for of late I have wondered whether or not to try my hand in learning Thassilion alchemy. I know from certain texts and stele (a stone tablet) that the Thassilions themselves especially those of my school of magic were exceptionally fond of alchemy. Yet some of their knowledge still remains, perhaps we can learn the art of their ancient alchemy together?

Karl Sarvo |
"You can show me what you've got for sale, as long as you don't have any high hopes of me buying anything now, traveling to Sandpoint has left my wallet hungry"
Nante Once-Dead |
I decided to take Karl's advice and be true to Nante's character, so:
Nante sneers. "Or have you been so long among the outsiders that you forget the words?"
This should be interesting for you, GM. :)
Varian Seldlon |
Varian is taken aback a bit at the sudden outburst,
hey... fellas, we all walk different paths, surely we can discuss this opposition of views as comrades, no need to insult others, no need to throw anyone in jail either.
diplomacy: 1d20 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 + 1 = 2
he attempts to diffuse the situation... but most likely makes it worse as he doesn't quite understand the Shoanti culture and people.
Jovalson |
Having watched the spectacle of these two and remaining silent, it becomes apparent that things could turn a bit more violent to Jovalson. While not opposed to seeing blood, it's just annoying have to heal people afterwards over such trivial matters.
"You will both do your heritage a great disservice if this comes to blows. The townsfolk who know little about it will surmise that Shaonti are violent people, not to be trusted. Those who know more will surely wonder lack of tattooes, rather than actions, are a problem. Being sherriff and helping people speaks volumes to outsiders. Think about the volumes your actions will speak should this turn violent. Do what you will, but I will not heal either of you it it comes as a result of stupidity."

GM_Fenwick |
"Yes, I suppose pure chemical, non-magical means of creating Thassalonian wonders are within my reach, aside from my own personal treatises, scrolls and books that I write. Unfortunately, my hands are no longer as steady as I would like for them to be, so you may have to aide me in mixing...
"That aside, I don;t believe I have the necessary equipment to undertake such a task. However, I can provide my wealth of knowledge for the time being as we wait for the materials to arrive. Feel free to take a look at anything in the room that passes your fancy."
I completely messed up the description of the house. Here is the revised description.
This ancient house is reminiscent of Thassalonian ruins, a two story building twenty-five feet wide and seventy-five feet long. On the first floor and immediate in the entrance, a grand library/study dominates the left side, with artifacts and books that display the eldritch runes of a forgotten empire. The right side of the first floor contains a kitchen and a dining room.
The library continues up onto the second floor, but ceases to contain books beyond the half-point. Living quarters are present on the right side of the second floor.
Your words seem to have an effect, but not as much as you would hope...
The veins on the sheriff's neck bulge as the cleric's words linger in the air. His exhales heavily, but remains tense and on edge. Hemlock points his finger at Nante, and then at the door before uttering two words with a deadly baritone and steel in his voice:
"GET. OUT."
Behind him, the Sandpoint guards currently stationed in the garrison look at each other worriedly and turn to the non-Shoanti, namely the heroes, with looks of uneasiness and worry.
Hemlock doesn't have a problem with Varian, Kriss or Jovalson. They can stay if Nante chooses to leave.
Sarvah lays the catalogue in front of you with a smile.
"Heroes get a 20% discount, Mister Karl..."
Most of the weapons in Ch. 6 of the Core Rulebook are available, but feel free to ask me if you have anything in particular you want to buy.
As you look, she thinks about your request for any jobs. "The boys in the back are always looking for scrap metal they can turn into tools or weapons. Tell ya what: for every...five pounds of metal you can bring to my shop, I'll give ya thirty gold pieces for your troubles. Oh, and there's a bonus if the scrap comes from goblin. It warms the heart to watch the little s&*#'s weapons melt into slag..."
******
The Quest Board
Sandpoint Goblin Bounty:
For every fresh pair of goblin ears, the Sheriff will pay the provider ten gold pieces.
New! One Monster's Metal is Another Woman's Treasure...:
Savrah, the young beautiful proprietor of Savrah's Armory, is willing to pay thirty gold pieces for every five pounds of metal brought to her shop, be it scrap or good metal. There is a bonus for scrap that comes from goblin weapons and/or equipment.
Sarvin the Greedy |
You need not worry about the mixing part, there are ways around that even if I am not around to help with it... First however we have to locate some book or stele concerning Thassilion alchemy, I know it exists but that is about all I have to go on...
I forgot in Sarvin's entry to list his favored class bonus, fortunately this can be turned into a roleplay opportunity. At second level (or whenever Thassilion alchemy is discovered) Sarvin can take the remaining skill rank in Craft (alchemy)...
Karl Sarvo |
Alright! More quests!
So 8 gp with a 20% discount that is 6 gp and 4 sp if I am not mistaken.
Krissina |
Krissina's eyes widen slightly, as she walks in on an argument.
She lays a hand gently on Nante's arm, "Come on, let me buy you a drink" she speaks lightly, somewhat worried about how the large warrior may react...
Jovalson |
At this point, Jovalson excuses himself from the sheriff's office and wanders directly to the posted Quest board in the town. He kneels and prays to Desna.
Give me strength this day, and let it shine the way.
Bring me forth the soldiers of man, who do all they can.
Send word throughout the land, we will make our stand
At the goblin village ahead.
Placing his heavy mace next to the sign, Jovalson calls out in a loud voice, "Hear me town of Sandpoint. I accept the challenges posted, and call forth all who wish to join me. I will march upon the goblins and destroy them all if need be, Desna will be done! Come forth heroes, and let us spare Sandpoint future sorrow."
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Krissina |
"So, I don't think I've ever seen Hemlock so riled, this a private matter or can you clue me in?"
Krissina pauses to watch Jovalson's prayer before directing Nante towards the tavern.
GM_Fenwick |
Brodert walks to his library, saying, "Then by all means, let me search my collection for anything pertaining to Thassalonian alchemy. I'm sure I acquired a tome here several years ago. Please feel free to take a look at my collection in the meantime..."
Savrah nods. "You got it!
She goes to one of the weapon stands on the wall and lifts the weapon of your purchase off its position. She places it on the desk and slides it towards you. "I take it that this will suffice?"
As your friends leave, the Sheriff exhales a lengthy breath and releases his tight grip from the table the map is laid out on. He takes a long swing from a flask of water at the desk before saying,
"I'm terribly sorry I lost my temper snapped at you. Your attempt to diffuse the situation is appreciated...but that particular subject is...a sensitive matter..."
Your declaration draws a round of applause from people in the market, which is to say about twenty people here this time of day. However, while most of the people continue on with their work, only one person steps forward.
"Ah, there you are!" Aldern Foxglove says, a friendly smile on his face. "I've been looking for your group for most of the morning, but I was told that you were busy with Sheriff Hemlock. But I now see that you have concluded your talk and are now free! Do you know where the rest of your friends are?"
Jovalson |
"No, I'm unsure where most of them are. I don't know what they have been doing, nor what they plan to do. I was hoping they would rally around for some way to protect Sandpoint from further attacks. I might be mistaken, and have to go alone. If I wait much longer, I might just decide to take a boat to a different land and be done with this."
GM_Fenwick |
Foxglove takes on a look of alarm before urgently saying:
"But you cannot leave! All of you are the 'Heroes of Sandpoint!' The goblin threat still lingers over our heads and...oh dear. This is most troublesome. Perhaps Sheriff Hemlock might have a solution? I understand that it is within his authority to ride to Magnimar and request for additional support. I know he did so five years ago during the Late Unpleasantness...although by the way he just slammed the door shut,", here he winces as the loud BANG erupts when the door meets the stone, "It doesn't seem like he's taking any audiences at the moment. Did something happen?"
@Everyone: All of you can hear Jovalson's declaration from wherever you are. The acoustics of the town square are surprisingly resonant.
Karl Sarvo |
Karl paid the discounted amount of 6 gp and 4 sp for a glaive
No, no, no With each step the mercenary took the word rang in his head You bloody fool He finally added as he cut to the corner If one leaves, most of them will probably scatter, which means I'll have to find mercenaries to join me, which means I'll be losing a bigger part of the take because the bosses of mercenaries tend to want a bigger piece of the pie Rage was threatening to rise within him as the scenario unfolded in his mind, but he did his best to placate his temper as he had done many times before I am not fool enough to think I can do this alone, so it seems I'll have to talk this one out of leaving Jovalson and what appeared to be a nobleman came into his view as he made it to the quest board.
"Jovalson, was it? What is this talk of leaving? When a town's in danger no less" Said Karl as he dragged a small smile into a face that wanted to frown instead "Lets not talk about this, especially not in front of a nobleman who has to worry about keeping the rest of the people calm when raids like this happen" He added in mock dramatic manner "Come, its time to talk strategy and I do that best when I am sitting in an inn, the Rusty Dragon is near"
I am assuming what Jovalson said about leaving was also sent through the acoustics of the town. Makes for a good rp moment don't you agree?
Varian Seldlon |
no, tis no problem friend, I understand sensitive subjects as well
as he hears jovvy's declaration he smiles.
I hate to leave so quickly, but I think my attack party just started forming.
with that he gives a nod to the sheriff and heads out the door.
I will go! Let us free these good people from this menace once and for all. We will drive them out and never again will this town need to fear!
As he speaks he makes his way up to jovvy.
HURAHH!
GM_Fenwick |
Foxglove smiles and rubs his hands together in what appears to be earnest glee.
"Excellent! I've always had aspirations to be a hero since my childhood! To be honest, I was thinking of inviting all of you to a boar hunt this afternoon, but I think that spending the evening hunting down goblins is a brilliant alternative! Now all we need to do is find your Shoatni and tiefling friends and Krissina..." The nobleman's face takes on a wistful appearance as his voice trails off.
You find the book on Thassalonian alchemy, a heavy tome enscribed in runes that say The Transmuter's Tome in ancient Thassalonian.
But when your hands brush the spine of a book adjacent to it, the covers and pages glow softly and feel warm to the touch. There is no title along its spine, but when you pull it off the shelf, arcane runes on the cover thrum with pulsating golden light.
Are Krisss and Nante alright?
Karl Sarvo |
The lad is both a hopeless romantic and naive, wonderful Karl began stroking his beard Still if we could get the backing of a noble, that would make dealing with Hemlock a lot easier, which means an easier time looking for...him The bounty hunter's thoughts turned dark and morbid as he remembered the object of his quest, but then he forced him to focus on the present, there were things he had to deal with now before that could happen.
"I am sure we can find most of them at the Rusty Dragon" He answered Foxglove curtly.
Nante Once-Dead |
"Yes, wanton goblin-slaughter suits my black mood," says Nante, suddenly coming out of his funk. He follows Krissina and the others.
Jovalson |
I am assuming what Jovalson said about leaving...
If I wanted it announced to multiple people, I would not have put it in a spoiler to a GM. Is it common people read spoilers? I only read spoilers directed at me. I'll do PMs from now on.
Varian Seldlon |
there is a difference in reading spoilers and acting on them :3. personally I like to read them for the RP story purposes, I never really use or act on the information therein lol. as you see, I only reacted to your non-spoiler-ed text if you wish me too stop though just ask, as to where this is common, I am unsure.
Karl Sarvo |
First let apologize if my post upset you, secondly I only acted on your post because the gm mentioned that the resonators carried over your declaration which I wrongly assumed included the post where you mentioned leaving on a boat. As you can see I haven't acted on other spoiler information before, so I see no harm in reading them in this particular game, why? Because they are in most of the posts, and really if we aren't supposed to even read them to enjoy the RP of the other players, then I am going to kindly ask the gm to remove my character from the active player list, as I am really not interested in participating in a game that doesn't allow you to enjoy the posts of other players.
GM_Fenwick |
Karl Sarvo wrote:If I wanted it announced to multiple people, I would not have put it in a spoiler to a GM. Is it common people read spoilers? I only read spoilers directed at me. I'll do PMs from now on.I am assuming what Jovalson said about leaving...
My bad. Since you made your prayer and declaration in a public place, I said in a couple of posts up that every PC could hear it.
*****
Brodert squints at the cover before saying:
"Oh, that's an apprentice's spellbook that I recovered in an archaeological dig to the north, which means that it should specialize in Greed Spells, or magic pertaining to the school of Trasmutation. I can't cast spells, so it isn't of much use to me. By all means, take it as a reward from me for your services to the town. I'm pretty sure I have more valuable tomes lying about the place."
Give me a second to determine which spells are in the book.
Foxglove turns pink at Krissina's approach but manages to recover himself to smile broadly.
"Excellent! Now, if you will excuse me, I will go prepare the horses for our forest expedition..."
He whistles a jaunty tune as he walks out of your sight.
But before you all can do anything else, screams of terror can suddenly be heard from Junk Beach. It is the shrill cry of children in danger, mixed with shouts of "Run, Jenna!", "Goblins!" and "HELP!!!!!"
Remember what I said about goblins jumping off the cliff?
I'll keep initiative off for a bit until you get to the scene. Enjoy!
@Sarvin: You can hear the screams as well.
Varian Seldlon |
Varian jumps into action.
Let all brave men of the town follow me! to the beach! HOORAH!
diplomacy: 1d20 ⇒ 5
something tells me people were quite uninspired at my speech... haha
Nante Once-Dead |
Nante claps Varian on the shoulder. "A fine attempt, my friend, but you must give them a reason." He cups his hands around his mouth and shouts, "People of Sandpoint! You are strong! You are fierce! Just yesterday, you drove a pack of goblins off a cliff! They fear you! Would you now flee from creatures you know to be weaklings and cowards? Would you now abandon your home? When your heroes stand ready to aid you in their annihilation? Will not one among your number stand with us?"
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 6 + 1 = 15
Sarvin the Greedy |
Sarvin pockets the spell book into his robes and speaks as he hears the scream... Now of all times...I wonder if goblins can be transmuted into gold? If so I'll be the richest tiefling in all of Varisia... Stay here my friend, I will deal with this nuisance...
Sarvin will now head to where he heard the screams come from...
GM_Fenwick |
The locals in the town center roar in approval of Nante's speech and swiftly grab whatever weapons they can find nearby: pitchforks, picks, gardening hoes and other crude implements that would not be out of place in a riot mob.
From your position atop the bluff of Junk Cliff, you can see in between the mounds of trash and detritus that a band of goblins have cornered five children, who look like they were exploring the beach when they were ambushed. There are eight bruised goblins, as well as a three goblin dogs that somehow managed to survive the fall.
The biggest child, a young girl about twelve, holds a short sword defiantly against the monsters as she shields her friends and playmates with a crude buckler fashioned out of a barrel top. At her foot, already one goblin lies bleeding into the sand...
It takes two rounds to get to the beach, one for Kriss and Sarvin who ran immediately.
Give me a second to set up the map before I roll for Initiative...
GM_Fenwick |
To avoid taking up too much space on the map, I will only put the warrior girl's token as opposed to putting all of the kids' tokens on the map. That, and that squiggly line is the wave line. You can either sprint down the walkway, or throw caution to the wind and jump fifteen feet to surprise attack.
Initiative:
Nante: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Krissina: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Sarvin: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Jovalson: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Varian: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Goblins: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Goblin Dog: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18

These virtual dice rollers are hacked, I tell you! Hacked!
Jovalson |
Jovalson will shake his head. Sigh, our brief respite brought about by more goblins. We should strike them at their heart. He begins his run towards the sound of danger, urging on his comrades.
Sarvin the Greedy |
Sarvin will move down roughly half of the walk way and fire his crossbow (Sarvin always keep its with an arrow already mounted) at the nearest goblin all the while shouting to both draw the attention of villagers and to distract the goblins...
