"I see no reason not to prioritize rescuing the woman", Evelina replies reassuringly. "If they dragged her away, then following her will lead us to them...and could very well lead to their lair..."

Evelina grins, noticeably a little too excited about this dangerous mission, "Two birds, one stone really."

To Ember, Ionnia hesitates before saying, "I would think that it's safe to say that the two are connected with each other. Winter creatures don't appear in the middle of summer without an unnatural winter taking place."

At Rorgar's question, she nods. "Yuln can remember where they were ambushed, but he's still in no condition to be escorting anyone. He's feeling much better now, so perhaps you might catch him while he's awake and give you some directions."

Ionnia stands up. "Thank you for accepting our request. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to meet with the council to discuss further protection measures. Before you go exploring, I'd recommend bundling up for a long winter trek if you haven't done so already..."

With a polite bow, she walks out of the room, leaving you to your own devices.

-----

What do you wish to do first?

a) Winter shopping spree!
b) Debrief Yuln.
c) None of the above. We make our own choices!

A combination of all 3 :)
Ionnia, before you go, where might we find a general store, and a smithy ?

As well, lets have the ones that might not get lost in the woods ask Yuln where we have to go, and I do not put myself in that catagory.
Rorgar mentions with a rueful grin.

Ionnia politely mentions the following:

Willowbark Apothecary sells inexpensive salves and potions.

Temple of Erastil has minor divine magical items that the clergy are willing to part with for a price.

The General Store. run by Vivialla Steranus, carries most of what adventurers and travelers will need to face the wilderness, as well as the sudden cold. For the first time since the Ice Age, winter coats are all the rage in summer.

While the town's Armory is off limits save for the most dire of circumstances, Isker's Smithy, run by a middle-aged man of the same name, sells weapons and various instruments of combat to all that can afford them. Just don't go flirting with his daughter, Xanthippe, or he'll give you a blade for free- right in the stomach.

"I am ready to go with my pack from the inn. My only concern would be how many days of rations we will need...as personally, I'm not a skilled scavenger. I think we should talk with Yuln before we buy too many supplies," Evelina suggests. "His info may reveal we need something we would never think of on our own."

"I will be happy to show you to all the right places", Ember says, volunteering her guiding services inside town. For the moment, the possibility of joining the foray has not occurred to her, nor would she probably relish the idea. It's cold enough as it is without going into the heart of cold.

I already started the character with Cold Weather Clothes. I can switch things around if we weren't supposed to.

"I bundled up earlier on my way into town, but if some are you are cold...I suppose two trips to the stores won't kill us." Evelina says with a cheery smile. "Shall we proceed?"

As soon as we decide where to go and start moving:
As the group travels, Evelina turns to them and say, "So...we will likely end up fighting things in that forest, right? Perhaps it would be best if we shared our training with one another. Me? I'm a swordfighter!" she pronounces confidently, despite her physique not appearing aligned with the claim.

Uruk lumbers along at the rear of the group, vigilant and constantly looking about. Years in the north had taught Uruk to always be alert for dangers, or otherwise risk certain harm.

Glancing over at Evelina, his eyes narrow and focus on her blade "A swordfighter, are you?" Scratching his head, Uruk sighs and adds "I suppose I am as well, but this is my sword." Point over his shoulder, Uruk draws their attention to the massive blade strapped to his back.

But that is not a knife, thats a sword. :)

Rorgar walks in to Yuln's sick room, in front of the group
Sir, can you give us dirctions to where you and your lady were attacked ?

Yuln manages to push himself up from his resting position. While his body speaks of a man who's gone trough a rather frosty hel, his eyes still shine with that familiar Ulfen pride.

"Aye. I'd go with you myself if I could still feel my fingers," he sighs. ""My ancestors would ridicule my lack of valor for fleeing rather than fighting to the end. But I faced enemies that even the greatest warriors in the Linnorm Kingdoms have faltered against, though I think I slew at least one of them before they dragged Lady Argentea away."

He says that the attack on Lady Argentea's caravan took approximately six miles south of Heldren. Follow the path, and you should find yourselves down there.

Evelina attempts to console the man, replying, "You have nothing to feel ashamed about. By escaping, you not only saved your own life...but have also given Lady Argentea her best chance of being rescued. The knowledge of her capture would have died with you, if you had tried to fight a losing battle."

After Ember's question, she adds, "Did the captors say or do anything that might have indicated why they wanted Lady Argentea alive, as opposed to the rest of you?" Or was there anything strange about her behavior or the way she hired you that would indicate she was expecting this kind of attack?"

Female Sylph Wizard (Fire) 1 (HP [5]6/6 | AC 14 Touch 14 FF 10 | Fort +0 Ref +4 Will +2 | Initiative +4 | Perception +0)

"Also, can you describe these 'winter creatures' in any more detail? Were they humanoids? Animals?" Ember asks, while trying not to push too hard at the man who is likely very exhausted and perhaps traumatized.

"T'was just the lady, two of her handmaidens and us ten guards, lass," Yuln says. "But I'm more than sure that the lady and I were the only ones to get out alive."

At Evelina's question, he grimaces. "They never mentioned anything when they ambushed us, but their main objective had to have been the lady. They took her into the forest back through the ice and snow. Beyond that, I don't know. I followed them as far as I could, but the winter-touched were too many and too hard to fend off in the snow alone. I barely escaped, and rode to seek help here."

He pauses as a hacking cough racks through his body. After his fit passes, he continues, "I don't know why they took her, but I'm more than sure that nothing good's gonna come out it. And Lady Argentea's behavior seemed as normal as one would be during an ambush: panicked, scared, and screaming." He laughs dryly.

At their looks of confusion at the mention of the winter-touched, Yuln scowls, and elaborates."They're fey creatures who have sworn themselves to the White Witches of Irrisen, those who stole our lands from us during the Winter War." He pauses to spit on the floor, a seemingly cultural gesture reserved for the mention of the Winter Witches that slaughtered his countrymen hundreds of years ago. "Tiny sprites no taller than the length of a man's forearm, but don't be fooled by their small gesture. Legends say they have taken a sliver ofice into their hearts, and their touch bears the harsh bite of winter."

He spits again onto the floor. "Want my advice on fighting Winter Touched? Cold iron and burning flame. Both burn them, and both are weapons that they fear. Take those into battle if you want any chance of making it out alive."

Female Sylph Wizard (Fire) 1 (HP [5]6/6 | AC 14 Touch 14 FF 10 | Fort +0 Ref +4 Will +2 | Initiative +4 | Perception +0)

"White Witches?!" Ember gasps as if smacked across the face. She goes quiet, and has nothing more to say for now, staring at the floor silently and lost in her own thoughts. She seems to be paying no attention whatsoever to her surroundings anymore, completely and utterly zoned out.

Evelina attention turns to Ember when she gasps, her eyes filled with concern. Winter witches...hmm. The mere mention of them seems to have Yuln and Ember quite upset...

Knowledge (Local): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24 What is her base knowledge about the White Witches of Irrisen?

Lost in thought for a few moments, Evelina snaps back to reality when Rorgar speaks. "Yes...purchasing cold iron is probably a good idea," she replies. However, as they walk, she fiddles with her coin purse nervously. I hope I have enough...or can talk the smithy down...

Looking to his coin pouch, Uruk sighs loudly "Hmmm, didn't think we'd need such tools... I'm afraid I won't be able to afford such a thing." With a shrug, Uruk heads out behind Rorgar mumbling to himself, something about the damnable fey.

FINALS ARE FINALLY OVER!

Cold iron weapons are available, but they cost twice as much as their regular steel counterparts.

@Evelina:

From a Taldan standpoint, the White Witches are a group of evil spell-casters that forcibly took over land once held by the Ulfen living Land of the Linnorn Kings. They are extremely isolationist and rule Irisen with an cruel and iron fist, and rarely have interactions with the world as a whole. The fact that their presence is mentioned here is both bizarre and foreboding.

2 X cost of weapon, ok.

I can front some items, as this will help keep me alive, but I would like a return when you can.

Rorgar looks at the selection of items, and makes some minor purchases.

"I...wasn't planning on going anywhere with you", Ember says cautiously after she realizes that Rorgar has bought her a dagger, eyeing the dwarf with a slightly scrunched up face, as if hesitant about her stance. She looks the group over, fidgeting a little bit, lips pursed and seeming wound up.

"Having said that..." she goes on, and holds a little pause. "If someone is indeed creating this awful weather, it would be through magic of some kind... are there ones among you well versed in matters arcane?"

She looks from Rorgar to Evelina and Uruk, and wonders just what chance they might have if an arcane puzzle presented itself. While she may not have experience with combat, she does have some with magic. "Perhaps I could come...just in case...as...as a consultant."

Evelina attempts to slow Rorgar down a little bit, before he purchases the shortsword. "Its a kind gesture, but I am far more practiced with a rapier..."

Hmm...assuming the smithy is willing to buy my old weapon, I would still be two gold short to pay back Rorgar or the smithy...Perhaps I can talk him down?

She takes a deep breath before approaching the smithy.

"Good morning. I was wondering if you would be willing to help us out a little? I'm sure you have heard about what happened with Yuln yesterday...We have been asked to look into the matter. Apparently some poor woman has been abducted by fey, who are no doubt involved in this unnatural weather. We were told that cold iron weapons will be crucial to our success. Unfortunately, several among as are a little short on gold, leaving the bulk of expense on poor Rorgar here. I don't suppose you would be able to cut us a slightly better deal...just this once?

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Evelina feels self doubt creeping in. Perhaps I laid it on a little too thick... However, she still waits for the smithy's response.

...

Evelina turns to Ember. "Arcane? That's got something to do with magic right?" She looks at the ground, slightly embarrassed. "Yeah...we could probably use some help in that regard."

She adds with a grin, "Don't worry about combat. I'll protect you!"

Besides, if it ends up saving my life, I will consider it money well spent.

Evelina your abilites are best with peircing weapons right ?

Holding back quietly as the others discuss the journey, Uruk ponders the issue of combat and finally speaks up at Ember "I will do my best to protect you, but there is no guarantees out in the wild. Your help would be most welcome, as the arcane is a mystery to me and I suspect the others, but I would understand if you had reservations of this trek."

At the Blacksmiths, Uruk glances about his wares and finally rumbles to the proprietor "Would you have a cold steel sword, something this size perhaps?" With a jerk of his neck, Uruk indicates something in the order of the blade on his back.

If he does, Uruk will propose a trade, plus the premium for cold iron if possible.

At Evelina's request, Isker mulls it over before saying, "The lowest I'm willing go with the weapons is ten percent off of total cost. Times are tough with this blasted winter, and I can't cut prices too low because of it."

To Uruk, Isker sizes up the barbarian, and looks to the giant sword before shaking his head. "Sorry, lad, but I'm afraid none of my cold iron ore went into any weapons of your...stature."

Isker mentions that he does have 10 +1 cold iron sling bullets. He'll throw in the sling for free if any of you purchase them.

"Thank you sir! That is very kind. Hopefully we can make it up to you by making this area a little safer for business..." Evelina replies with a pleasant smile.

Turning to Rorgar, she adds, "You are probably right about the shortsword. I didn't realize quite how expensive the rapier would be. My own rapier was acquired more through a lucky scavenging effort...So, thank you." She awkwardly looks through her own money. "I can give you about 10gp now if you want (15gp if we can assume he will buy our old weapons)...I suppose a little more if you need it...but I'd prefer to keep some money for food and whatnot...I promise I will pay back in time, though"

Agreed, let's head out.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand I've fixed my computer! Damn router was being glitchy....

You all head out into the cold environs outside of Heldren, braving the biting winds that claw at your bodies and try to find purchase into your warm skin. The trek to Yuln's ambush site takes you about two hours to make by foot.

Please make two DC 15 Fort Saves to avoid frostbite, with a +5 bonus due to your winter gear. For later checks, you gain a +1 for every successful check.

....

Near the forest, the temperature grows noticeably colder. The road ahead is littered with debris and the corpses of slain humans and horses. A carriage stands in the roadway, its team of horses missing or cut free, while another overturned carriage lies sprawled and broken next to the tree line. To the south, more bodies have fallen around what appears to be a statue of ice. A snowy trail leads deeper into the forest...

First Frostbite: 1d6 ⇒ 1

Second Frostbite: 1d6 ⇒ 1

Those that failed are Fatigued, and if you do not fix this soon, you will also suffer from Frostbite. CRB says that the only way to get rid of Fatigue is to rest for eight hours.

Additionally, due to the heavy snowfall, movement is cut in half, meaning that moving from one 5 ft. square to another is equivalent to moving 10 ft.

Female Sylph Wizard (Fire) 1 (HP [5]6/6 | AC 14 Touch 14 FF 10 | Fort +0 Ref +4 Will +2 | Initiative +4 | Perception +0)

Upon arriving at the massacre site, Ember makes sure to stay to the back of the formation, huddled tight within her cold weather gear, trembling a little and feeling a little weak from the cold. "I hate this", she mumbles under her breath. She's been quiet for pretty much the entire trip here, staying apart from the group, seeming lost in thought. Heavy frost has formed in her eyelashes from frozen moisture.

I want to give kudos for the battlemap technical implementation. I wish all games used that!

Evelina seems to be push through the cold on enthusiasm alone, however her cheery demeanor fails when she see the massacre.

She nervously scans the area from behind a fallen tree branch.

Seemingly impervious to the cold weather, Uruk marches on tirelessly through the snow, albeit his progress is impeded by the sheer volume of it.

Stopping at the site of the carnage, the lumbering hulk slowly glances around and mutters "This is a godforsaken mess. What do you suppose could have done this? Unperturbed by the violent scene, Uruk peers about the site trying to glean as much information that might yet remain.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17

Assuming all seems alright, Uruk will venture forth for a closer look, but not before drawing his blade as a precaution... whatever killed these men could still be about.

Rorgar tired from wading through the deep snow, continues over to the tipped over carrage.

No idea what caused this mess.

No actual damage from the cold, but under the affects of fatigue

@Evelina and Uruk:

Over the howl of the wind, the two of you can hear a rustling, shuffling sort of noise inside of the overturned caravan that certainly isn't being caused by the winter breezes.

The carriage doors seem to be sealed shut. It should be an easy matter to open them.

Evelina draws her rapier, clearly on edge. Turning to the others, she whispers, "The caravan...something's in it..."

Continuing to whisper, she says to Ember, "I think now would be a good time for you to hang back and stay behind us, Miss. Ember..."
