Mohktar kneels in the temple, lighting the incense and nodding in agreement to the wise man's observations. "Indeed, wise master. Our trials have only begun." He stands and bows low to the blind man then returns to his prostrations before the altar. ""It is as the Master of Masters states, a hand must grip the task until it is done, to relent means to fail the fate given us."

To Shiko's comments, Mohktar seems to tense. Whether it's frustration or it's exhaustion, his even tone does not reveal one or the other. "There is a time in all our lives, Shiko-san, when Irori calls us to cease our inward gaze and turn our attentions to the world around us. In bettering our surroundings we ultimately improve our selves." He breathes inwardly and outwardly, the subtle count 1 second on the intake and 2 seconds on the exhale. "In searching outward, we committed evil to its final reward, and lay to rest imprisoned souls. If this is all Irori sought of my life, then I gladly yield up this vessel to receive my reward."

He opens his eyes and looks to his friend. "Open your eyes and see the good you've done this day. Already your actions have made a difference in this land. To commit yourself wholly to the task is to world your honor at its best and not as a half measure."

I'll leave it open in case tell master or Shiko wants to continue.

In the morning, Mohktar seeks out the others at the temple of Sarenrae, noting the presence of the carriage out front.

Alwyn spends the remainder of the time before leaving on the carriage, sketching in his journal. Some of the sketches will be of Pradhip, and the others will be of the temple and it's priest and acolytes.

Palace of Birdsong| Shards of Oberon map | War for the crown maps

OK I'm going to move us on a little, please use earlier spoilers if you wish to talk to any of the temple NPCs.

Outside the temple of Saranrae, your carriage awaits. It's a dark mahogany affair with a team of six thoroughbred horses. The driver and the carriage are emblazoned with Lord Pandisar's arms. You are ushered inside and you are somewhat surprised to find that despite the carriage's gilded exterior to find the seats are just as uncomfortable as any other cab.

The journey from the temple to the Thankur's Palace is slow going at first, for the streets of the High Holy District are choked with pilgrims. Already there are several large procession that the cab has to take a circuitous route to avoid. Eventually however the crowds thin out and the cab starts to make up for lost time.

Soon you approach the curtain wall of the palace, and the cab gets stopped at several checkpoints. At the side gates several soldiers with dogs inspect the carriage while their sergeant looks at your letter. Apparently satisfied they wave you through.

Inside the compound there's almost another world, quiet and serene with well maintained gardens and a beautifully clear lake. The palace itself is a wonder, constructed entirely from white marble in an arabesque style with four smaller domes and one large central dome of enormous size. Yet somehow it manages to be graceful even ethereal as it soars up from the lake.

Your carriage stops just outside and a functionary leads you inside where you see towering palatial chambers supported by elaborately carved pillars surround an ornamental stream that flows through the palace. Halls of polished marble lead to a languidly luxurious sitting room. The thakur himself sits at the far end of the room, his bejeweled turban sparkling in the light shining through the windows. He paints a canvas while watching his baby son in a crib nearby.

As you enter, a tall, tanned man with a neatly trimmed goatee, introduces rises to bid you welcome in the common tongue, "Greetings! I am Lord Rasheem Pandisar. I am most pleased that you have accepted my invitation! Before we get down to business, perhaps some refreshments?"

Lord Pandisar claps his hands twice and several servants scurry out to place a variety of drinks and confections on the low table around which you are most comfortably seated.

Catching your eye, Lord Pandisar says, "I must congratulate you on capturing the Saville Street and saving lady Phrune. I also hear that Condelezza Da'vore finally met justice, a most singular achievement - bravo!"

He smiles sadly and admits, "It seems that, perhaps by accident you've had more success in fighting the followers of Dhalavei than the watch have had in the last decade. Oh they've sent numerous people to investigate but they usually end up dead rather like that unfortunate sergeant you found in that peculiar house's basement. Regrettably Dhalavei has long been a thorn in our side, sometimes beaten back but like a cancer it always reappears.

Two weeks ago, a favorite cousin of Thakur Kharswan, Jalmeray's ruler, disappeared suddenly. With the help of divination magic, his corpse was found bearing the cult’s ritual sacrificial markings. Incensed at the attack on his family, Kharswan called on the Maurya-Rahm (his legion of advisers and administrators), and demanded that they outlaw the cult and prohibit the worship of Dhalavei. The advisers warned that the killing was a calculated measure to observe the thakur’s response, and that such a drastic reaction might be unwise. Kharswan would not relent, however, and the ban on worship of Dhalavei came down. That very night the thakur received a death threat from the forbidden cult, the threat told us that nobody the thakur held dear was safe. The horrible fate of Banhi Sarr underlines just how serious the threat is.

I am hoping that by turning to some, most accomplished, outsiders we will be able to tackle this threat once and for all. If you will agree to be our agents in this matter, we shall ensure you are handsomely compensated."

Hirati, seeing the infant, bursts into flight singing out "BabybabybabybabyBABY!" She quickly flies over and hovers just out of reach. As she is about to do all this Pratavh realizes she's going do something and starts to call out but is to late to stop her. Bowing low he says, "My apologise sir, Hirati is easily excited and troublesome, but she will not hurt your child you have my word." Hirati flies over to hover in from of Lord Pansidar and asks "What'shisnamehowoldishecanIplaywithhim?" Her words are a barely intelligible jumble, but understandable.

Alwyn accepts a small pastry and a glass of sweet wine, while listening to their host introductions and the reason for their summons.

"Lord Pandisar, Thank you sir for the unexpected invitation to your home. We are all happy, a quick glance to Shiro as this is said that we have been able to assist your city. It appears that this cult of Dhalavei is an unacceptable presence in the city and a danger to the Thakur. How would you have us, as outsiders, to tackle this problem as you have requested? Are the principles of this cult known, or will we need to start from scratch with our investigations."

Despite the questioning nature of his response it is easy to see in the bard's eyes that the challenge is something he is interested in helping with. Just wishes to know what the boundaries of that help will be.

The Thakur politely ignores Hirati's antics, for your audience is with Lord Pandisar after all. He replies to Alwyn first, saying "The cult is reprehensible, and most of the people rightly fear it but it's always had surprising number of supporters. Any local investigation is likely to be tainted" The last he says reluctantly, before carrying on cheerfully, "Should you agree to fight the cult for us, I shall provide a Writ of Authority which will allow you to question anyone and go anywhere, naturally you will use this power responsibly and judiciously. In addition I shall write letters of introduction to several people knowledgeable about the cult: Prince Kanvar, a great student of Vudrani history; Lord Mahindra, an infamous rumormonger; Pravezak, the thakur’s spiritual counselor; and Varunasi, a high-caste merchant well acquainted with current regional politics."

Lord Pandisar then nods to Shikyo and tells you that, "Of course such an investigation will be dangerous, for which you'll naturally wish to be compensated. I was thinking of a 500 gold retainer each immediately and twice that upon elimination of the cult. It's likely that the cult will have a variety of assets, all of which will be your to dispose of as you see fit."

Perception DC20 plus Appraise DC20:
The Thakur's art is surprisingly good, he has apparently been well tutored in the arts. You suspect the canvas he's currently working on (a view of fishing boats in the harbor at sunset) would sell for in excess of 1000g for a collector.

Alwyn is talking to himself while he takes notes of Lord Pandisar's comments.

Not sure why Lilly, but it seemed like a good fit

Lord Pandisar's face flickers slightly as if concerned by sonething in Shikyomaru's tone. Mastering himself he tells you plainly, "The cult is to be eradicated root and branch. Some collateral damage is expected but a lot would be a problem. Likewise if there is a perception that you are killing innocents or being overly brutal that would also be a problem. Are you able to operate within this framework?"

Sense Motive DC 20:
You get the feeling that the Jalmary government is deeply embarrassed by their inability to contain the cult. They want you to dispose of them quietly in so far as us possible. Public executions for instance would be unwelcome.

Realizing that Hirati is about to do something to cause a lot of trouble, Pratavh grabs her and hauls her away from Lord Pansidar, "Behave yourself Hirati, leave the man alone. If you cause us enough trouble that he decides action is to be taken against us because of you I will through you under the cart first, do you understand me, now behave." Hirati flinches a bit from the vehemence in Pratavh's voice, realizing that she has gone too far this time, she ceases struggling and begins crying against his chest. Looking to their host, "I am sorry about her conduct Lord Pansidar, she very much hates being ignored and was likely going to hit you with her breath weapon or something. She will behave now, won't you Hirati." The little dragon barely peaks at Pansidar before speaking in a sobbing voice, "Hirati will be good now." Pratavh give the man an apologetic look before continuing, "I believe we can work within those guidelines my lord."

Hirati could sense through their connection that Pratavh was far more scared for here than angry, hence why she came to him and is weeping instead of fleeing and/or doing something equally disastrous.

He seems to be waiting to see if everyone is agreement about the proposed mission and compensation.

Prince Kanvar... wonder what he knows about Osiriani ruins that might be found around here, no, no, no! Mustn't get side tracked there will be time for those questions later

Returning to the problem at hand, ticking things off on his fingers.

"1. Where have there been strongholds of this cult in previous years?

2. Have there been large shipments of acid purchased or perhaps stolen in recent trading history?

3. Who would have the most to gain from the Thakur's fall from grace and possible assassination? Are they involved with the cult even if only remotely?"

He continues talking out loud, not necessarily to anyone in particular but working out a problem set before him.

Lord Pandisar nods to Alwyn and replies, "Prince Kanvar is most knowledgeable about the cults's history, but the cult has frequently shown up in larger settlements over a period of many hundred years. I wouldn't really know about acid purchases, certainly there are many apothecaries who sell small quantities perhaps Lord Mahindra know more. As for who would have the most to gain from the Thakur's fall, I'd imagine the cult, but Varunasi knows best as she always does..." He says the last with a rueful smile.

rumormonger

Indeed, let us speak with one who knows secrets.

Lord Rasheem, nods and claps twice. He says to Pratavh, "A fine place to start. Lord Mahindra hears many things, although you shall have to sift the truth from the dross..."

A servant appears and Lord Rasheem quietly tells him, "Nis'sandēha vē calānē kē li'ē ka'ī kāmōṁ hōgā, bhagavāna mahindrā kō dēkhanē kē li'ē unhēṁ lē lō, aura unakē li'ē pratīkṣā karēṁ."

Vudrani:
Take them to see Lord Mahindra, and wait for them, doubtless they shall have many errands to run.

Lord Rasheem smiles and tells you that, "My man is at your disposal today. I'm afraid I shall have need of him tomorrow, I intend to witness the Parade of Souls. Naturally you are welcome to join me if you have the time to spare. I would appreciate periodic progress updates, these don't have to be in person - a written account shall suffice if you are needed elsewhere."

The servant hands you a most official looking warrant (affixed with the seal of the Thakur and countersigned by Lord Rasheem and several other senior members of the Mauyra Rahm) and beckons you to follow.

Palace of Birdsong| Shards of Oberon map | War for the crown maps

The servant then leads you back to Lord Rasheem's carriage. Inside you notice a small sack which has 2500g in it - your advance. As the carriage speeds towards Lord Mahindra's residence in the Mauyra Rahm ward, you have a moment of peace to contemplate your next moves.

I'll put another post up in a couple of hours.

The carriage takes you to what turns out to be a really rather swish tea house at the southern tip of the Mauyra-Rahm Ward, with a great view over the river. The tea house itself is a wood and red brick affair, decked out in colorful paper lanterns lanterns and heavily overgrown with wysteria which bedecks the house in purple blossom.

Inside a man servant with a turban a traditional costume ushers you into a private room at the back where you hear raucous laughter an elderly man with a graying beard and fatherly demeanor is holding court. Around him are an assorted collection of high society, various aristocrats, lawyers, ladies of leisure and so on. You get the impression that somebody had just told a very funny joke.

The elderly man spy's you and sobers up and makes his excuses saying, "Mahilā'ēm̐ aura sajjana puruṣa. Kartavya kī kŏla mujhē kṣamā prārthanā karō!"

Vudrani:
Ladies, gentlemen. Pray excuse me, duty calls!

You follow the man into what must be his study, a richly furnished oak paneled room with plush red leather armchairs and a well loves mahogany desk with an inlay of lapis lazuli in the shame of some abstract geometrical pattern. The room smells of incense and leather with the subtle aroma of tea wafting in from outside. In the common tongue the man, says "Ah so you're ones I've heard so much about. I've been expecting you, I believe you have a letter for me?"

You hand over the letter and he reads it briefly, and says, "Three days here and you've already met The Thakur and Lord Pandisar. I can tell you there's an army of diplomatic corps that would envy that record! I do hope Pandisar didn't low ball you? Oh he didn't he! The rascal, you know he's got a bad habit of doing that. He'll feel guilty later and probably pay you more anyway if this little venture is successful. Something similar happened last summer, but rather than adventurers it was with with a delegation from Absalom trying to secure a supply of Tea in exchange for various rare metals. Pandisar got a real sweat heart deal I can tell you, and then felt so bad about it that..."

You can sense that he was about to fly into some extended anecdote, when he (mercifully?) stops himself and mutters, "Anyway that's not why you're here. You want to know about that blasted cult." Stroking his beard he orders his thoughts and then tells you about two incidents he believes may be related to your investigation. "Several headless bodies have been recently found in the Commerce District, a particularly gruesome affair unlike even the most violent of Niswan’s crimes. I’ve also heard rumors of informants in the palace guard, though who they sell information to is something even I can’t glean from local chatter. Raheem is a good friend, and you seem like honest folk; I promise to try to find out more. I can also find you dedicated spouses if you’re in the market, heh?"

Mohktar remains quiet for the duration. The events at the house, Shiko-san's notable silence in their conversation at the temple, now this rapid movement by the government to install him and his companions as investigators of sorts into the darkness of Dhalavei. He has no intention of turning down the offer to cleanse the land of his grandfather's birth, but there are elements beneath the waters that swirl and dive like shadows beyond reach.

Their first stop at the rumor monger's location brings into focus one of the more serious problems that'd been gnawing at his heart since leaving the docks. The vast separation between those who have and those who have not is like a vibrant island in the midst of a desert. Then there are these people... The men and women laughing amongst themselves, cause the monk's right hand to twitch. But he seeks the calm at his core and turns his energies outwards as Mahindra speaks his greetings.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28 (aristocrats, etc)
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31 (Mahindra)

Mahindra begins listing out odds and ends of information as Mohktar studies his demeanor and his inflections versus the content. Alwyn is the better at sifting the information. For Mohktar, the body and the tone spoke more about a person than the words they spoke. Outside of Temple, most people spoke too much and listened too little.

As the party responds, Mohktar inserts a quiet in into the next pool of silence among the group. "What of the deaths in this district, honored host?"

Mohktar:
The aristocrats barely noticed the party, one of them is relating some particularly tedious anecdote about a local property dispute that has the others in gales of laughter. On the other hand you have Mahindra's full attention. You get the impression that he's a good deal sharper than he appears. While prone to prattling on, his offer to help seems sincere.

Mahindra grins in mock horror, "No spouses? Your loss! Still if you change your minds... Anyway Dalavei, well you know how in the winter months you get a lot of colds and so on, well in the summer you get burnings. Alas not all from the sun. If you want the full gory history you should talk to Prince Kanvar, but from what I understand Dalavei has a most unhealthy obsession with internal decay which the acid symbolizes. As for this district well it's just the usual crimes of passion mostly, although there are occasionally unexplained disappearances. Still I think the cult's base is likely elsewhere. If I had to guess it would be somewhere in the Surakpor or perhaps the Commercial District."

"Well Lord Mahindra, what would you say the chances are we'll have a run-in with these cultists while investigating locally? While it delays us shortly, every cultist we run into is another cultist off their employment list."

Lord Mahindra strokes his beard and considers, "I couldn't say who the victims are, although either of your scenarios sounds more plausible than anything else I can think of. It's true the Commerce District is quiet after hours and is mostly deserted, although some merchants live above their shops. This particular shop is quite small so I doubt the owners live there."

He sips some jasmine tea as he considers, "The watch do make patrols but there is a lot of ground to cover so they'd probably only swing by once or twice on a normal night. Lets not forget the festival! The watch have had their hands full, all those crowds need policing and they where mostly by the waterfront last night. Oh that reminds me, you probably should call in on Mistress Tari tomorrow. I believe she intends to try and help poor Banhi Sarr but security will be difficult..."

Yeah some more frequent posts would be appreciated. I'd like to get this finished in a reasonable time frame :)

Lord Mahindra smiles sadly and tells Lilly, "That is entirely possible Miss Hennett, as I said it's beyond doubt that the cult has infiltrated the Thakur's Palace. Previous investigations where compromised by leaks. Still I'm sure you'll prove to be more than a match for the Cult. They may not take you seriously at first, but they will. "With the bodies being found in the same general area, that should help narrow down the places to look. As for secure lodgings, yes, I think we are good."

"Let us remain as one." Mohktar says finally. "The Commerce District is a good start. We can proceed outward from the incense shop as we seek information." Mohktar clasps his hands behind his back and nods towards the exit. "Honored Host, your hospitality is appreciated. I believe my companions and I will discern out next move en route to the Commerce District."

Once outside he gathers the group in confidence. "I would recommend there is a spiral inwards towards the incense shop. An effort to observe the feel and pulse of the area in a state of rest." He nods to the ninja. "Might I suggest Shiko-san and I go directly to the shop...unobserved. We can install ourselves as observers from the shadows as the rest of you move into the area." He pauses and considers. "In this way, we remain in close contact should there be...conflict."

If the plan is good...
Stealth: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29 (slip into the area)
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (2) + 14 = 16 (getting to a high point if available)
Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20 (observing area around incense shop)

A good plan Mohktar...

Stealth: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (18) + 17 = 35
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17

Shiko installs himself somewhere close by where he can get a good view of the shop.

"That's a sensible suggestion, i can't imagine Hirati being too quiet when there's something exciting. No offense meant Hirati, and my armor & weapons wouldn't be the most soundproof either."

She turns to Pratavh and Alwyn.
"Shall we?"

Unfortunately I've not been able to post much at work recently (I've just been really busy). Turns out I left my notes for the incense shop at home, so I wont be able to make a gameplay post till this evening.

Hirati looks indignant at the accusation of not being quiet and says in a whisper yell that's not much quieter than a real yell, "I can too be quiet!" Laughing at her statement, Pratavh replies, "Sure you can Hirati, I believe you." Turning to Lilly, "We might as well be on our way then."

"That's a sound plan, a bard with companions walking around sight seeing should not cause any concern."

new work schedule, started thus week but should result in more consistent posting pattern. No rotating shifts anymore.

Shiko points in the direction of the Falcons Hollow game. And the Iron Gods game...make haste!

"Nope, it shouldn't. It would be useful to recharge our spent spells though, before running into a band of cultists. That encounter with the ghost sorceress was taking a bite out of us casters' reserves."

You managed to get some rest last night but not the full 8 hours. Let's say you get half your spells and resources back. If you rest for another 4 hours you will get everything back.
