I think we could work with that Zilka. Also, if you guys wouldn't mind posting your finished products?
GM Faelyn |
I am sort of just happy with Nathaniel the way he is.
That's fine, Nathaniel. I don't want you guys to think you have to use the Story Feats or Background skills if you do not want to. They are simply additional ways to help customize your characters more.
Nathaniel Artegal Boote |
Maybe I'm nit picking, I'm in a weird mood this morning, but if the "hunter" who fired the arrow is ten feet up in the air, on a Hunter's Blind, in Dim Light, how is it everyone knows it's a Hobgoblin?
I know the DM said it was a Hobgoblin, but how do "we" know it is not some bedraggled hunter?
GM Faelyn |
Zirren would know for sure it's a hobgoblin; with his low-light vision the hobgoblin would be within "normal light" which is "dim light" for everyone else with regular vision.
So given that information, I'll let you guys digest that information. I won't flat out say Zirren would tell you guys that its a hobgoblin, because we all know what assuming does. :)
Greyson Caine |
Because even in dim light, ten feet up we can all still see it. It isn't stealthed. It's just dark. We can plainly make out its silhouette and most of its prominent features.
The DC to recognize a Hobgoblin is a DC 10.
Unless the Hobgoblin is making a Disguise check, we can all tell what it is.
Nathaniel Artegal Boote |
Those are good answers. For the record, I hate the whole "DC" to identify things that for all purposes a character has never encountered before, but then again I'm not a fan of the whole Knowledge Check rolls of the game to begin with
Greyson Caine |
Its just supposed to be a measure of how commonplace creatures are. It isn't a perfect system, but for anyone who grew up in a world populated by menaces like orcs and hobgoblins, I don't think it's a stretch for most people to have learned how to recognize them.
GM Faelyn |
The other thing to consider is that hobgoblins are a very common monstrous race, just like kobolds and standard goblins. Given the lengthy history of the Inner Seas and those races... You all wouldn't even need any type of knowledge check to recognize them. Especially goblins given the Goblin Wars the occurred in Andoran only a few years prior to the campaign.
GM Faelyn |
Another random question for you guys... Would you like to be awarded exp and then level up once you reach that point? Or would you rather me keep track of that and then just notify you all once you have reached your next level?
Zirren Jenefone |
I generally prefer it to be the GM who lets us know. It feels more cinematic that way.
Also, when you were talking about background skills did you mean from this list?
http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamemastering/other-rules/variant-rules-3rd-party/a damant-entertainment/backgrounds-occupations
As for the story feat, I've gone over them again and again also looking at what Zirran's background and class decisions have been, and it comes down to either Glimpse Beyond or Eldritch Researcher. If you have a preference then let me know.
GM Faelyn |
If you would like to, Nathaniel, I have no problem with that. I'll post some basic info in the gameplay thread for you all to assist in the decision making.
GM Faelyn |
hey guys, sorry about my lack of posting past few days. I was rather busy and everytime I would sit down to devote sometime... another thing kept coming up. I will have a post up in a little bit.
GM Faelyn |
No problem, Nathaniel! Hope today was a better day for you.
GM Faelyn |
Just a heads up to you guys. It's my son's 2nd birthday tomorrow and I will not be around tomorrow or Saturday (his party).
GM Faelyn |
Sorry guys! For some reason I had it in my mind that I was waiting on posts from you all. Making a post now!
GM Faelyn |
I would say it's likely around 8:30ish based on the actions of the others after you guys left. You will both return sometime around 11:30ish. Going to work on keeping things moving a little faster in the Camp thread to get you guys back faster. Sorry, Nathaniel caught me a little off-guard with his desire to return the hobgoblin to the lumber camp.
GM Faelyn |
Sorry to hear that, Nathaniel! That's huge bummer. Hope you feel better soon.
Zirren Jenefone |
So a friend of mine is starting up a new game on the forums known as Wicked World, and he is looking for a few more players to join in.
The system we're using is Reign, One Roll Engine/Godlike if any of you have ever played/heard of before. He's never run a game on the forums before but he's a great storyteller and has been working on the game for a while now. If anyone is interested in joining, it would be a big help.
Zirren Jenefone |
Actually scratch that folks, the game is different now, it's actually called as the Shadows Draw Near, and it's a D-20 modern type game for ease of play.
GM Faelyn |
No problem, DH. I will be making a post shortly guys. Sorry for the delay.
GM Faelyn |
Zirren, please see this reference my Gameplay post
Additional: I am striving for a dark feel to this mini-adventure path and to assist with that, I am thinking about implementing an interesting idea I once read by implementing scars upon the characters from wounds received in battle.
Granted, Zirren, did not receive any actual wounds from his injury; however, I was thinking of adding a non-mechanical aspect to Zirren after his traumatic, near death experience (similar to the scar aspect). I think it might would be interesting to have Zirren affected with a pervasive chill about him. Nothing that would negatively effect him mechanically, but simply a roleplay aspect. Something along the lines of noticing no matter how hot the environment, he cannot quite seem to get warm.
What are your thoughts? If you feel that's too much, feel free to tweak the idea around and make something fun of it!
GM Faelyn |
I've always felt that minor curses for brushes with supernatural death are really interesting and very underused.
I agree! I think they allow for memorable quirks to characters that the players may not think about! One of my favorite curses like this was with my old 2nd edition tabletop group... We were displaced into Ravenloft and our druid cast flame strike on a witch's hut (why I cannot remember, but it was considered bad juju) and in Ravenloft that meant bad stuff. The druid was cursed so that he could only speak in a whisper, permanently. It was awesome!
Also, i really like the way this scene has unfolded. Very nicely woven together story threads.
Thanks, Caine! I'm glad it came together nicely for you guys. I initially had a very different plan with this encounter. I was a little worried it might have felt a little forced this way.
I am really enjoying this group's dynamics and the way you guys are handling things.

I've long since felt that being affected by magic should have some sort of side effects to go along with it, rather than just, I took some damage and then I got better. I really enjoy your idea about having something supernaturally cool happening to my character while near death and will definitely enjoy role playing that out.
I once had an enemy Will-o-Wisp almost die, due to getting caught on fire by one of the party members. Afterwards it became an Oracle of flame, losing its ability to become invisible entirely, and it's shock ability became a flame touch as it slowly retrained it's racial hit dice into Oracle levels while being a recurring villain in my game.

That is awesome, Zirren! Glad you enjoy the idea!!
Now worries, Nathaniel, take your time man. I also love the Caine/Boote combo... just the name alone remembers me of 80's cop movie partners (i.e. Tango & Cash, Turner & Hooch, etc.).

3 people marked this as a favorite. |
...Cue upbeat music.
One is a relatively naive, by the book, newbie with a strong sense of justice, and a need to help others.
... Clip of a happy-go-lucky Art.
The other is a hardened veteran, who's been disillusioned by the world he's too familiar with, and follows his own set of rules.
... Clip of a disapproving Greyson.
Coming this summer; watch as these two very different people,
... Clip of the two standing next to one another to show how different they are.
Find themselves, unexpectedly, working together.
... Clip with Caine in Sheriff Baleson's office.
"I told you. I don't need a partner!"
"Dammit Caine! You're a loose cannon! Someone's gotta set you straight!"
"Have you ever even been on a ship?!
... Brief pause.
To save a village from a corrupt Baron.
... Clip of Kreed and Payday.
Share in the laughter and heartache as they come to better understand one another and find the true meaning of friendship!
... Cue heartstrings pulling music, and a quick montage of emotional music and then the rest of the major cast..
Caine and Boote!!
This film is not yet rated.

LOL! Awesomeness. Correcto, Ruhk, your arrow missed. Sorry I seemed to have not responded to that, my mistake!
GM Faelyn |
Hey all, sorry, no post tonight. Going to be up for a while working on an arrest report...
Zirren Jenefone |
For the curse effects for Zirren, not that I expect us to go anywhere near a desert like environment, does Zirren just feel cold or is he actually always cold now?
It would make a certain amount of sense to me if he were to go to a cold environment that things would be worse for him.
