Benedictus is lucid enough to let others do the talk.

"Nice mask...," the scholar whispers through gritted teeth.

Here we are. This is the man who stole the mask. And he's probably involved in that evil plan about resurrecting the Sky Pharaoh. But if we want to take Ptemenib out of here alive, we should seize our opportunity to leave for now. Perhaps, we could come back as soon as we accompany Ptemenib outside...Provided this man is not lying, of course...Too many options, this matter cannot be solved with rationality alone.

"On behalf of the Silver Chain then, I apologize for his imprisonment. I suggest you take him with my blessings and go... there need be no further bloodshed between us."

Zilchus is about to turn around and go, having what they came for...but then, with a eye roll, remembers Ben's worries and blathering about some silly mask and spins on his heels...knowing he won't hear the end of it if he doesn't ask now.

He looks Ekram up and down, giving him a polite and respectful looking over. He looks at Ben and, as if he can't believe he has to do this, speaks for the party.

"I believe you also have a mask that belongs to us. It was stolen from us, from our dig site. Now, if you'll return that, then my annoy--, my friend Ben, here," Zilchus introduces Ben. "My friend here has been going on and on about some mask. If you'll return the mask, we'll have no reason for any trouble." Zilchus offers a smile, holding his falchion lazily. "We're not interested in bloodshed either."

Cahal frowns at Zilchus. With a finger, she asks the masked one to hold his thought and whispers to Zilch and the others: "I don't think he's the one who took the mask. He's been manipulated, no?"

"I mean, as far as I can tell, he's just a pawn, no?"

Your sect’s efforts have been exemplary so far, but there is much yet to be done. The necropolis of Wati will soon be opened, and we might find clues that have lain hidden for too long. Transportation and means of communication will be provided. A gang of grave robbers called the Silver Chain should provide you with the cover and resources you need to continue the search. Once you arrive in the city, infiltrate this Silver Chain and bend them to His divine will.

Move quickly.

Once the Pharasmins open the necropolis to explorers, we run the risk of outsiders finding the mask first. Succeed, and Hakotep’s moment of resurrection will soon be at hand. I do not need to tell you how much I would loathe expressing the Sky Pharaoh’s displeasure should you fail.

Nidhi takes a step forward. ”What my companions are trying to say, is that it’s curious you’re wearing a mask like that when a similar mask went missing while we were tomb hopping. A mask at the Temple of Nethy’s to be exact. You should consider giving us that mask for all the trouble the Silver Chains have caused us.”

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17

Nidhi eyes travel up the masked man, "Besides, I bet you have a handsome face under there." As Nidhi is offering the compliment, her eyes are clearly more focused on the man's exposed arms. That's the only way to wear muscle, Nidhi thinks in appreciation.

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

Zilchus suggests Ekram has a mask belonging to the party and he seems to stiffen. When Nidhi confirms it, even behind the mask you can sense his excitement as his muscles flex and relax. Seeing Cahal wants to chat, he suggests amiably, ”You may confer with your friends if you like, I’ll wait here.”

”I will say though, that I do not have the mask you speak of, and would, if I’m to be honest, be very keen to know where in the Necropolis you lost this treasure of yours. I’d be willing to pay handsomely for the information of course.”

Ptemenib grimaces as he struggles to his feet and shuffles back to the hallway with the party. When the group is alone, he suggests, ”I know this man as fair. He’s recently in charge of the Silver Chain, and when the gang didn’t want to kill me, though he clearly did, he allowed the majority to have their say - which kept me alive. So while I do not like the man, it may be he can be trusted.”

”But what is this mask you speak of and why does he want it?”

I've moved you on the map. When you're ready to meet with Ekram again, just move your character back into the room. Position carefully as you never know when combat might commence!

"We believe the stolen mask is responsible for all of the dead swarming into Wati."

Nidhi, being neutral in alignment, doesn't feel the need to kill Ekram. "He seems nice. If he listens to his members, he must be a reasonable man. I think we should ask to inspect his mask and then be on our way... although... if it is the real mask, I'd be willing to bet money that it would have the same necromantic aura we felt in the church."

Nidhi turns to Ptemenib, "So why did they kidnap you?" Nidhi raises an eyebrow, hoping it was because of something insignificant. Is does seem a little strange that after chasing after the Silver Chains, Ptemenib would be willing to give give up.

Nidhi changes the subject to something she's been wondering since first seeing the leader of the Silver Chains: "Ptemenib, have you seen Ekram without his mask? Is he handsome under there? Does he wear garlic? ...I- I'm asking for a friend." With Nidhi's last statement, which is also a lie, Nidhi makes a furtive glace towards Cahal. Nidhi's questions perhaps seem a bit bizarre in the current circumstances.

Nidhi sighs. Nidhi loves to tell stories but recalling a tale in which her and her party get robbed from their hard-earned treasure is a bit of a downer. Perhaps she wouldn't lead with that fact. "Well, we were at the Church of Nethy's and found this secret room." Nidhi shakes a finger at Ptemenib, "and let me tell you - that secret room was well-hidden! We scoured the entire building before we found it. Two days, Ptemenib. Two days we spent there. We slept on the cold stone floor - in a room right next to a burial chamber with dozens of bodies - some animated." Nidhi is starting to get into her story. "There were dozens of dead! Dozens in that church! All the animated resolved to protect their precious sanctum. Diseased dead rose up from their decayed beds - lunging at us - determined to kill!" Nidhi is wholly committed to her tale, trying to get a rise from Ptemenib. "You see, Ptemenib, although hundreds of years had pasted, the dead were still loyally stationed at their posts! They still rested in the sleeping quarters. Still bending down on their knees praying to their god even though they were only skull and bone!" Nidhi makes a prayer gesture with both of her hands. "They almost killed one of us. Ben was bleeding out and the undead tried to pass on the blessing of Nethys to commune his soul to the dead! You should have seen what remained of that priest, Ptemenib. It was... necromantic. And his eyes!" Nidhi returns her voice to a normal volume, "And that is what makes them so terrifying. They don't feel pain, they don't listen to reason, they just... kill because they can." Nidhi finishes ominously. Somehow, perhaps because she was caught up in the dramatics, Nidhi failed to answer the priest's question regarding the mask.

"Do you want to hear about what happened to Wati the day of the auction? Nidhi tilts her head, fairly eager to divulge her experience of the night. Yes, it had been one of the roughest night's she'd ever experienced, but now that it'd passed, it'd become something of an intrigue. Nidhi clears her throat. "So, there we were in the Laughing Jackal. The night was winding down and the aution was just rapping up. When suddenly, there are screams of terror and the doors to the building and busted down by a squadron of undead! Civilians were slaughtered like livestock. The dead cut down anyone close to the double doors. The entire city of Wati was either consumed by flames or ravaged by undead hordes!" Nidhi has raised her voice again. "Rotting hands choking the life out of merchants in Sunburst Market. Mummies pounding on the front doors of homes until the wood gave way... The Church of Pharasma. The Church was one of the first places people turned to but there was too much chaos. Long lines of people stood outside, begging, pleading, to be let inside while undead swarmed - still swarm - the streets." Nidhi stops talking so she can stare at the priest to see if he looks alarmed.

Nidhi appears to be energized after recounting her version of past events. Perky, she slides her hands together and addresses the group: "So what do you all want to say to Ekram? He seems to be telling the truth. I don't think the mask he's wearing is the right mask." If you can call it the right mask.

Nidhi frowns, "How did you say you were captured by the Silver Chain, Ptemenib?"

"Then if he's telling the truth and hasn't got a clue where the real missing mask is, I say we take him up on his offer and get out while the everything's good," Florence whispers. Ptemenib is quite taken up by Nidhi’s story and is quite displeased with the state of the city since he’s been gone. ”We must return to the church immediately! I must get to my post and do what I can for the city. These grave robbers are small fry - I was investigating them when they got the best of me and overwhelmed me. It’s taken me a few days to find their lair here and I was confirming it before bringing troops from the church to close them down when they captured me.”

”I don’t know what the undead rising have to do with this mask you speak of. If you wish to pursue it, by all means continue pursuing it. I must get back to the church however. Right now! he exclaims with some passion. He looks at the pit between him and the stairs leading out… ”Someone help me past this pit.” he begs.

Cahal watches Ekram from across the room. He does pay attention to you but, aside from some of the exclamations, you doubt he heard much.

Benedictus, the man hasn’t left, he’s still standing in the door to, presumably, his chambers. You moved away. So you won't be able to check his mask so easily.

When Cahal returns to Ekram and asks him a pointed question, he answers, ”He was snooping around our operation. I’d have killed him, but the gang believes it’s bad luck to kill a priest and so here we are. My best hideout has been compromised, and you have your priest back. Good for you, less so for me - I think you’ll agree.”

”So what has your team decided. Will you tell me of this mask you say is yours? For that, I give you the priest freely, and will even pay an additional, oh, 200gp for all you know of this object. Further, I promise I’ll take the Silver Chain out of here - you won’t hear from us again.”

Nidhi listens as Ekram tries to negotiate a price with the party.

"Take off your mask," Nidhi calls out to Ekram. It seems more like a catcall than a threat. She adds: "I want to have this discussion face-to-face." Who wears a mask anyway? Nidhi seems to be far more interested in seeing Ekram's face and mask more than the money.

After waiting for an answer, Ben ensues. "I believe that the mask stolen inside the Temple of Nethys is the mask worn by the God itself when he was an Osirian mortal. Legends hold that when he ascended to Godhood, he left behind the mask he was used to wear in order to conceal the terrible plagues of his powerful magic on his body. He had half of his face terribly scarred, burned by a powerful spell of his, according to some old manuscripts I've seen personally. That mask was later found, and the man who found it became so powerful thanks to the arcane powers held in the mask that he claimed the throne of Osirion for him and his descendants, to whom he passed down the mask.”

Ben makes a pause, in order to evaluate the reaction of his interlocutor to his fake story, then ensues. Crafting theories from nothing was something he had always loved, and an attitude which helped him in his work at the University. Guesswork, nothing more. “I have reasons to believe that the mask that we were supposed to find was precisely the mask of the mortal Nethys. This explains why someone has stolen it before we could claim it. The mask is dangerous, because it consumes the bodily strengths of those who wear it, according to the accounts I’ve read about it. I hope that whoever found it won’t be so fool to wear it more than one hour a day.”

"Sure," Zilchus says, agreeing for the party but is happy to go alone if others aren't up for it. He's sure the Pharasmooks have failed, probably because they haven't been supportive enough of the Ruby Prince. "We'll go there right after we see to your safety."

Zilchus begins to walk back to the Pharasmooks HQ, taking his usual lead with his left hand on his sheathed falchion, weapon cord tied.

"Say, let's get Ptemenib back, then report back to Abdur and Qasin, then head our way over to the Necropolis gates. I don't think it's too far." Zilchus looks to see if he has agreement from others.

"Sounds like a plan to me," Florence agrees. "Abdur is fine and it's definitely not safe for Ptemenib to go alone. Let's go make sure things are still in one piece at the temple."

"Yeah, Ben, why did you tell that guy all about our business? Do you think he'll do something positive with that information? I think I should have stopped you but by the time I thought of that you were rolling..." Zilchus comments as he helps Ptemenib get out.

Ben makes a gesture to wait to Zilchus, signifying that he will answer him later, when they're out of the building. Once outside, the scholar turns to his friend. "I didn't tell him the truth. The story I crafted for him is completely false, Nethys never had a mask as a mortal. Oh, and no one can be completely certain that he's really been a mortal once. But if you mean why did I reveal him the exact location of our exploration, and where the mask was supposed to be, well...I made a simple calculation. The dig sites weren't kept secret by the Pharasmoo...", dammit, Zil!, I mean, by the Pharasmites. It would just take a few hours of information gathering for Ekram to discover it anyway. Therefore, I've chosen to reveal the information myself, in order to gain free exit out of this godsforsaken place."

A tad absent-mindedly, his thoughts still revolving around the strange theory of the Sky Pharaoh and his resurrection, Ben nods to Ptemenib's proposal and accepts to follow the others to the gates of the Necropolis.

"Yes, but this does not help us find the mask. If the group had been infiltrated, perhaps this masked menace knew where to find the infiltrators, or at least tell us about them..." Cahal says to no one in particular as the group walks back.

Zilchus looks at Cahal.

"Why is it our job to find the mask? And why is the mask *so* important?" Zilchus asks the question that had been bothering him for a while. "So what if a few punk gangs want some mask? What of it? If we had it, we'd just be selling it like we did eveyrthing else. What does it matter?"

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

The streets of Wati are virtually abandoned and the city is quiet. The vast majority of shops are closed and most services are unavailable, making prices soar 200% above normal. Wati’s temples are so inundated with refugees that they cannot provide even basic services to all who ask for them.

The party reaches the church of Pharasma, and like the night before, it is mobbed with people. Ptemenib is shocked at the outpouring and pauses a moment before struggling forward alone. ”Hurry, do what you can, there is obviously a lot to do!”

He stumbles at the threshold, but is quickly identified by a young acolyte who helps him inside. As you head back to Abdur’s you hear Ptemenib voice calling out orders and bringing a fresh energy he surely doesn’t feel to their endeavors.

You make your way back toward Milki. A crowd of sorts has gathered there as well, though most are inside, a few mill about outside the building chatting with the guard Abdur has posted. The lamps are out around his building, but he remains in the street out front, though he’s resting on a short stool leaning against his shop now that daylight has reduced some of the attacks.

The chirping bird fluttering around his head, likely giving the poor man a headache, flies swiftly to you as soon as you are spotted.

”What news?! What news!!” it demands in its high squeaky voice as you approach. It flies around your heads, repeating the same phrase over and over in its excitement.

Nidhi isn't sure where she should go or what she should do. She'd never seen Wati, the city she'd been born and raised in, in so much chaos. "Dinner?" She asks her companions.

Does the bird look familiar?
