Although their difficulties in opening the door really aren't that funny, Florence has to cough and cover her mouth to hide a smile. "Apparently not! Let's see if we can get it open without needing to run back to town for more gear..." she says as she moves to see if she can help with pulling the doors open.

Not sure if Florence can help or not on this one but if she can, then she will.

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

The party joins forces and pulls and scratches at the door. One nail is chipped, and the door swings free at last! Once you get it open a crack, and have something to grip, it becomes much easier to open the rest of the way. Map updated

This rectangular room is empty save for some engravings and fixtures upon the walls, a pair of heavy stone doors to the north (where you enter), and an immense stone wheel against the south wall. The air is stale, and a layer of dust and sand covers the floor, lying in a thicker layer to the south. All four walls bear sunk-relief engravings and hieroglyphs, while small stone faces are affixed to the walls at about shoulder height in each corner. The stone wheel to the south is engraved with a large spiral and is set in stone tracks in the floor and ceiling.

The dust and sand in the room, as well as the stale air, indicate that nothing has entered this room for at least a few decades. The hieroglyphs on the walls are Ancient Osiriani and with the engravings, they describe the life of the tomb’s enshrined occupant, Akhentepi, a celebrated military commander who presided over the troops garrisoned in Wati prior to the city’s downfall. The hieroglyphs warn, “Akhentepi’s tomb is well defended, and those who defile it tempt the wrath of the gods.” An additional warning advises, “The only thing the Lady of Graves despises more than the grave robber is the unsuccessful grave robber,” followed by a final admonishment to “turn back while you can.”

Neutral Human Bard/14

Nidhi stands up after an hour's worth of knealing and pulling sand away from the door. She moves over to Benedictus to take advantage of the shade. She takes out her flask and drinks deeply. Water felt wonderful down her throat. Nidhi doesn't attempt to wipe off her sweat but will fan herself with her hands.

Nidhi observes the stronger party members attempt to Strength check the door.

--------

When the tomb is finally opened, Nidhi waits for at least 2 other party members to enter before moving inside.

Zilchus reads the hieroglyphics aloud, so that others may hear the ancient warning and make up their own minds about this task.

"Don't say you weren't warned," Zilchus says, examining the entry (and giving others a look) before going in. "With all these warnings and locked door, it's almost as if the builders of this didn't want graverobbers."

As the door opens Augustus pants heavily, trying to catch his breath. "Finally! Told you... I could.... do it..."

Finally catching his breath he follows Zilchus into the tomb and listens as the man reads warning messages left to scare away grave robbers.

"Well it seems like this will be a story to tell after all if those warnings have any truth to them. Bring it on I say!" Augustus is getting pumped up now that they have entered the tomb.

Without being able to resist the calling of the engravings of the room, and literally pushed forward by his natural curiosity, Benedictus steps into the dusty room. He swallows bitterly as he reads the warning hieroglyphs. "W-We...We better watch out..."

Looking around himself, the scholar turns to his companions. "Anyway, we should have expected it. No danger, no reward." Then his eyes set on Augustus. "Hey, Augustus! Would you open the door for us? I'd rather have someone adept in these kind of things to check the wheel for traps before manipulating it, though. Do we have any volunteers?"

Florence carefully steps into the tomb behind Augustus and the others, Bynx following close behind. She coughs in response to the stale, musty air and shivers as Zilchus reads the hieroglyphs' warning aloud.

"No sense in turning back now," she responds, feeling compelled to whisper. "I'm not sure what good I'll be in watching for traps but I'll do my best just the same," she adds as she cautiously peers around the room.

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

Looking for traps is a perception roll, getting past what you find is disable device. Also, I see your disable bonus at +7 not +4 - I think. :)

Maximus can fit in this part of the tomb if you wish. It is cooler than outdoors.

The stone wheel is harder to turn than it looks - and it looks heavy. Augustus puts his shoulder into it without success (taking 20). In all, it will take three of you heaving behind Augustus to shift it. Unfortunately, shifting it is just the first part of the problem. Once you do move it, it rolls back into place as soon as you release it. It ‘rests’ closed.

If none of you have pitons to wedge it open, someone could sacrifice a dagger to the same purpose… Softer objects like wood, or even rope, are crushed by the weight of the wheel. Someone was serious about sealing this tomb.

To keep us moving, I’ll assume you do something to hold it in place, but please let me know who’s doing what so I know who to blame when you get trapped later…

The following square room is starkly devoid of any markings or adornment. In the center of the chamber’s floor, a square shaft drops straight down into darkness. A faint musty odor rises from the pit. A single piton has been hammered into the stone floor by the northeast corner of the pit, and a dusty length of rope dangles from the piton into the darkness of the shaft. The rope extends only 5 feet into the shaft before ending, having been cut at that point. The rope is thoroughly rotted and crumbles if handled.

"Maybe a piton will hold it in place," Zilchus hopes, removing a piton (and hammer) from his backpack. "If one of you," Zilchus hands the hammer to the Professor and takes the wheel again, "...will pound that in when we get it up, that would be nice."

Zilch reapplies his might to the wheel so that it might be piton'd open.

"Rope, huh? Geez, this has not been easy going so far," Zilchus pulls out his 50' of rope and, after checking the piton and it's strength, unattaches the old rope and puts the new one on. "I never thought this would be easy, but this is pretty annoying."

Zilchus casts Light on a stone and sends it down, looking at the landing for the rope should he go down. He will knot the rope while he has time.

"Any takes for going first?" Zilchus asks, but is mostly looking at Augustus.

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

Zilchus looks down the hole and sees that it descends some 60' before reaching the bottom. He also sees the remains of the cut rope there where it apparently fell after being severed. The pitons seem very secure - both the one you placed and the one where the old rope was tied.

The masonry in the shaft is exceptionally smooth, and slightly angled inward, making for an exceedingly difficult climb without the rope. (est. DC 25 or even higher)

Any who look down also see a corpse next to some stone doors in the west wall. There seems to be some sort of cartouche or other carving on the doors, but it's hard to see from this angle.

Augustus makes sure to lead Maximus into the tomb before continuing. When the party finally gets through the stone wheel Augustus takes his pack off of the horse and steps towards the hole in the ground. Watching the shining stone hit the bottom and seeing the corpse Augustus instinctively puts his hand on the hilt of his sword.

"I will go first friends! Wait until I get to the bottom just in case something happens." Augustus begins to climb down the rope focusing on not falling since he is wearing so much weight.

"Uh, hold on there, Augustus...I think we need a bit more rope. Does anyone have more?" Zilchus tries to stop Augustus from going down until he is sure that here is enough rope to get all the way down.

"The question I have is 'What cut the rope?'. The skeleton didn't end up down there by accident."

Florence peers into the hole and then quickly steps back, her face paling slightly - though whether from the sheer drop or the skeleton at the bottom is uncertain. "Um...I've got some rope," she offers as she digs into her pack. "It's silk rope, which is supposed to be very tough and sturdy. At the time I thought the price was a bit much but now I'm really happy that I spent the gold!"

Nidhi stands with her feet slightly apart, crossing her arms. "I'm not going first. I don't like small, cramped spaces."

"Someone strong should go first. To catch others if they fall," Nidhi suggests. "I'm willing to go second if Augustus or Zilchus goes first," Nidhi offers. She looks at Florence and Benedictus, unsure how they feel about the situation.

Augustus Voralius III wrote:

"Excellent!" Nidhi gives a grateful smile and nods approvingly to the brave Augustus.

Nidhi observes Florence looks a little paler and is glad she's not the only one who feels uneasy.

"I'm not carrying any rope," Nidhi shakes her head regretfully. "Do we have enough rope and an extra piton for 2 scales? 4 bundles of rope should be enough, right? That way there could be two people scaling at a time."

"I believe Augustus said Maximus was holding rope. Plus Florence's silk rope. That should be enough for at least one, right?"

------

If the party ends up scaling down the pit using rope:

Nidhi has to drop her bedroll down the opening because she wants both hands when scaling down the rope. (If someone offers to hold the bedroll for her she'll temporarily hand them it instead.)

When it's her time to descend, Nidhi carefully backs down the opening, holding onto the rope for dear life. Her Everburning Torch is in her outside pocket of her robe. 2 inches of the torch are sticking out from the pocket.

Climb (rope): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23

"Oh geez, oh geez, oh geez," Nidhi says anxiously. "I don't like this one bit. Oh geez, oh geez, oh geez. Dearest Pharasma, I don't want my fate to end this way."

As Nidhi scales the rope, her voice echos within the 60' something drop.

Zilchus worries that no one is taken his warning about the randomly cut rope seriously.

"Did no one hear me? Are you sure you don't want to check on this?"

Neutral Human Bard/14

Nidhi uses Detect Magic on the cut rope.

If no magic is detected, Nidhi attempts to pull up the remaining rope using one hand. Her other hand touches the wall of the room she's standing in. She doesn't want to fall down the pit.

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

The climb DC for a rope with something to brace against is DC 5. You can take-10 on the check.

Zilchus sees nothing with his perception, nor does Nidhi with her detect magic (though the party has some magic among their possessions, and of course the light rock in the pit glows with magic).

Please confirm if you're climbing down.

Inactive; Campaign Concluded

"I'm not sure what there is to check," Florence frowns. "The rope is old and crumbling so I'd guess it was cut a long time ago...but by who or what, I have no idea..."

Her eyes then widen as a horrible thought occurs to her. "Wh...what if someone came in from behind us and cut our rope? We'd be trapped down there!"

Then she looks back to the door they'd spiked open with the piton. "Ohhh, but we can't close the door behind us because we'd never get it open again from this side," she frets. "I don't know what else we can do except to risk climbing down."

Neutral Human Bard/14

Nidhi stares at Zilchus expectantly. She waits for Zilchus to finish knotting 2 ropes (Possibly Florence's silk rope and Augustus' normal rope?) together and knotting 1 end of the rope to the 1 secure piton (located at by the northeast corner of the pit.)

Nidhi then looks around the room, her stare fixing on Augustus.

"If you're comfortable going first, go ahead and climb down. Call back up to us when you're at the bottom. I will climb down when your weight is off the rope. If you fall, I know a Cure Light Wounds spell to stabilize you."

Zilchus nearly facepalms.

"Am I the only person who sees the body down there? Did he die in a fall? How the did the rope get 'severed' at such a great height?" Zilchus looks at Florence.

"Nothing about this bothers you?"

Zilchus casts light and touches the lip of the drop.

"How did the rope break? Doesn't that seem weird?" Zilchus realizes that maybe he's being paranoid and offers the rope to Augustus.

Neutral Human Bard/14

Nidhi shrugs, "Perhaps the rope broke from being so old. I doubt many people go tomb robbing. It's disrespectful. Besides, the Necropolis is full of death." Nidhi pauses for a moment. "It's Pharasma's fate that brought us here and we knew there would be danger with this privilege. I don't want to die, but if that is my fate I must accept it." Nidhi's false bravado gives her courage.

Nidhi stands up and places a hand on her hip, smiling teasingly, "So Zilchus, am I to believe that you're more afraid of a few little skeletons than this deep pit? Or are you just stalling because you're afraid of the dark?" I wonder what Zilchus is actually afraid of...

Nidhi observes Zilchus offer the rope to Augustus. She waits for somebody to scale down the rope so she can go next.

Augustus takes the rope from Zilchus, "I'll go down first! I'm not afraid of a skeleton or how he got there. I'm sure Nidhi is right, the other rope looks old and weak." He rests his hand on his sword again, a grin on his face as he does, "Plus if anyone or anything tries to harm me it will be the last thing they do!"

Augustus shifts his gear around and begins climbing down the pit, "Remember to wait until I give the all clear before coming down just in case it actually is a trap. And don't worry ladies," he gives a wink at the two women in the party, "I don't plan on dying in the bottom of a pit."

Take 10 Climb: 10 + 1 = 11

Augustus takes his time climbing down so that he doesn't fall or embarrass himself. When he reaches the bottom he will look around lighting a torch if he needs the light. He just makes sure there are no immediate dangers before telling the others it's safe to continue.

With that said, Ben pronounces some words in Ancient Osiriani and four globes of light appears above his head. The scholar quickly moves them in the shaft.

Florence takes a deep breath, trying to calm her own nerves. "Believe me, I'm not happy that this is practically the first thing we find in here either. But the only way to learn more is to get down there and have a look at the skeleton." She wasn't sure why, but the fact that Zilchus seemed especially rattled by their discovery might have bothered her more than the discovery itself.

As Ben volunteers to stay up top and keep watch until all seems safe below, she nods. "Okay, sounds like a plan." She pauses for a moment and then speaks a single word, "Bericht", as she points at Ben. "There. We can keep in touch without having to yell so loud that we'd wake the d...er, you get the idea. Just whisper and I'll hear you."

Once it comes her turn to make her way down the rope, Florence quickly gathers Bynx up and deposits him in his own little carrying satchel which she then secures to her back. Then she takes another deep breath and lowers herself in and slowly begins to make her way down without actually looking down.

"Oof...Bynx, you need to lay off the treats..." she mutters as she descends.

GM Rolls:
1d20 ⇒ 19

Augustus begins the climb down, and gets about 10' from the edge when a trap is triggered!

A blade tries to shoot out of the shaft and sever the rope he climbs, which would drop him 50' to the floor below. Alas, the traps arm has not been oiled in centuries and the mechanism jams...

Though there is now a blade sticking out of the wall 5' down, it is away from your rope, and Augustus may climb to the bottom in relative safety where he looks around the area before the others join him. Please remember to move yourselves on the map.

Mirrored images of a warrior in side profile, facing inward, are carved on an ornate pair of stone doors in the west wall of this square room. The figure is depicted wearing padded armor, with a scarab-shaped shield on the arm facing the viewer, and a raised khopesh held aloft in the other.

A crumpled humanoid body lies directly in front of the doors. A hint of decay hangs in the air, and a dried stain mars the stone floor under the body.

The body in front of the doors is mostly skeletal, with a thin layer of desiccated tissue. You can identify the body as that of a male human or half-elf who obviously died down here. Both of the body’s legs are broken from a fall from a great height, and the unfortunate man apparently crawled to the doors before he expired.

The corpse’s gear has suffered decades of rot and rust and is mostly unusable, though a thorough search yields a couple of metal pitons and a usable hammer, as well as two vials of alchemist’s fire that have remained miraculously unbroken.

As the trap is sprung, Zilchus tries to reach for Augustus knowing that it would be futile and too late, but not having any better options...and when the trap fails, Zilchus begins to breathe again.

"Ah piddlespot," Zilchus oaths, going to lean against the wall. His eyes first go to Florence, then to Nidhni, then the Professor. It's clear he is really angry that he was ignored.

Man, I couldn't get you guys to roll a freakin' perception check. :)

Zilchus tries to keep his cool as he waits for the all-clear from Augustus...who should be dead.

"It's all clear down here guys! I told you there was nothing to worry about! There's no way a trap like that would work on me!" Augustus runs a hand through his hair and takes some deep breaths not actually believing what he's saying.

I really could have died in this hole! Just like this guy... Anyway I guess I'll take Zilchus more seriously from now on.

Augustus stands near the door while waiting for the others, observing the figures carved into them.

"Unless the trap is capable of resetting itself automatically, our descent should be safe now, don't you think, Zilchus?"

Nidhi has no complaints about the party looting the skeleton. He isn't part of the legacy inside the tomb.

If Nidhi doesn't detect anything, she tries the left door. She positions herself behind the left door. ”Everyone, perhaps you should move out of the line of sight in case this is another trap.” Nidhi looks around at her fellow adventurers, waiting for their responses.

If nobody complains, Nidhi pulls her robe sleeves to cover her hands before gently pulling on the handle of the left door. She pulls slowly, as if caressing the door with a light pull. If the door doesn't budge, Nidhi gradually increases her pull until the door is open about 3 inches. Nidhi whispers, ”Do you see anything?”

Looking for traps is a perception roll, getting past what you find is disable device.

Nidhi examines the door, but doesn’t connect it with any particular historical event or religion. She suspects it’s a carving of the tomb’s resident, Akhentepi. Finding no traps either, she carefully opens the door to a long dark hallway.

Light is brought forth and you can see the walls of this ten-foot-wide corridor feature bas-relief carvings of great battles. Armies with spears and shields clash at the direction of commanders, while other leaders direct troops from chariots that are ruthlessly overrunning their enemies. Engraved stone double doors stand at the other end of the hallway, shrouded in darkness.

Your lights sources are good for 20’, then dim light for another 20’ if I remember right. So you can't actually see the far doors as yet.

The engravings on these doors resemble the first set, except that Akhentepi is depicted as an older man riding in a chariot. He carries the same scarab shield, but his other arm points the exit (the way you came in) as if to command your departure.

Final warning.

"You okay, Augustus?" she asks quietly. "I'm s-sorry...you could've fallen, all because we didn't look around more closely..."

"Of course I'm okay! Don't worry so much! You're a lot prettier when you smile." Augustus grins as usual, seemingly unfazed by his near death experience and trying to maintain his chivalrous personality.

As Nidhi opens the door Augustus steps forward so that he may enter before the others. Zilchus still manages to make it in before him and not realizing that Zilchus is upset call out, "Wait up Zilchus! Let me lead the way, in case there are more traps or something!"

As he attempts to catch up to Zilchus, Augustus remains alert of his surroundings, secretly noting that they should have been more careful back with the pit.

Seeing Zilchus and Augustus enter into the next room, Nidhi determines the room is safe enough for her to enter too. She holds her Everburning Torch as she enters.

She happily hums and skips inside until she reaches Zilchus. ”Wow, this room is pretty cool isn't it?” Nidhi doesn't address any particular person with her question. Her tone is cheerful, ”A story written in stone.” Nidhi lets out a breath and rolls on her heels.

”Is that him on the chariot? What do you think was his weapon of choice? A whip? Bow and arrow? Flail?” Nidhi studies the walls looking for any fallen enemies for clues.

”What do you all think?”

Zilchus looks at the chariot, re-noted by Nidhi and then at the narrow hallway.

"I think this is too foreboding. I only one of us should be in this hallway when we open the door," Zilchus comments, wondering if he will be ignored again.

He moves back into the other room and hugs the wall, letting Augustus do his thing.

Neutral Human Bard/14

Nidhi follows Zilchus back into the previous room. Nidhi feels a little confused by Zilchus' words.

"You think this one is trapped too Zilchus? I of course volunteer to open the door but if we can avoid a trap I'm all for it!" Augustus looks at Zilchus and waits to see if he should proceed with opening the door.

Zilchus indicates yes (that he should open it) from what he hopes is a safe spot.

"I don't know that it's trapped, but probably."

Inactive; Campaign Concluded

Florence peers into the hallway for a moment but then quickly moves back out of the way as Nidhii and Zilchus step back into the small room. "So...should we have some sort of routine going forward for examining rooms and doors before we all stroll on ahead? I guess it might be safer than having all of us trying to crowd around at once..." she asks hesitantly, noting that Zilchus has been largely silent since climbing down the rope. "I'm not really sure how people would handle such a thing, uh out in the field, so to speak."
