GM: oops, my bad. This is my one and only primary magic user that I have ever played.. I may be needing some guidance at times. Please let me know if there is anything that you think I should do differently as we play; it's the only way I can learn the class better!

Amelia's eyes grow in wonder as she peers all about her. "It is amazing.. we have traveled back in time!! I can't wait to see whats down here!" she exclaims. Once the smell hits her though, she begins to rethink things.. finding the source of this olfactory assault is suddenly very low on her list of desires.

As the party steps out onto the top of the stairs, Amelia is careful to keep behind some of the others, but also move aside so that she can aim her spells. Cautiously and quietly, she peers about the room.

With that she casts a halo around her head.

halo:
Halo: Some aasimars possess the ability to manifest halos. An aasimar with this racial trait can create light centered on her head at will as a spell-like ability. When using her halo, she gains a +2 circumstance bonus on Intimidate checks against evil creatures and on saving throws against becoming blinded or dazzled. This racial trait replaces the darkvision racial trait.

Solange would prefer to be in the middle of the action because of the vision thing, she's not terribly worried about being hit.

There appears to be several exits from the room, including a large natural cavern to the north and a doorway to the northwest.

I should also mention the stairs are difficult terrain in both directions (very steep). Solange, fell free to put your readied attack into a spoiler in case it happens. Also, anyone can roll a knowledge check on their turn. These are the base DCs to get information, if you exceed them by more than 5, feel free to ask more specific questions about them.

Lizardman knowledge local DC 11:
These reptilian humanoids have green scales, a short and toothy snout, and a thick alligator-like tail. They attack with bites and claws, but sometimes use weapons, as these ones do (morningstars and javelins).

Dinosaur knowledge nature DC 13:

Out of combat. Solange, feel free to heal up if you'd like.

Kahel takes a quick look at the vanquished creatures, and carefully jots down notes and drawings for the Society to study later. Taking 10 on Knowledge Nature to satisfy the success condition. The team has earned its first Victory Point! for the Special

Wary of the time, the group trudges on, searching each of the rooms nearby. Most seem like mundane animal pens and barracks, however, the large circular room near the end is worth detailing.

Clouds of steam rise from this balmy chamber’s countless pools. Small, rocky islands abound, separated by cloudy, mineral-laden waters. Each island supports a stone plinth carved with minute glyphs and elaborate pictograms. Thanks to the chamber’s steamy haze, you can't make out the symbols upon it from the shore. Sliding across the floors and floating in the pools, thousands of snakes of various species and sizes slither throughout the chamber and bask in its tropical heat.

DC 5 knowledge nature:
The snakes are too numerous to slice and dice, but they are mildly venomous. They seem to be somewhat calmed by the waters, though.

In your next post, describe how you would get get to the five rocky islands: either by jumping between the islands (looks hard) or by wading in the shallow snake-filled waters. Perhaps some other clever way to get there (or to neutralize the snakes)? Also, let me know if you speak Draconic. That will make things easier for you.

If you jump, give me an Acrobatics check for each of the five islands. If you decide to wade through, give me five checks of either Handle Animal, Stealth, or wild empathy. Failure at any of these will cause you to be bitten. Let me know if there is a damage limit before you say enough is enough.

Then, once you get to each of the five islands, roll once for each of these skills that you have available: Appraise, Knowledge (history), Knowledge (nature), Knowledge (religion), Linguistics, or Perception.

Or you could just sit on the shore and cheer the others on, if you are deathly afraid of snakes. Feel free to take 10 on any of these checks. I'll do the final tally when all have reported in. Hopefully this time tomorrow. :)

Coming into the new room, Amelia wipes the sweat and condensation from her brow. Good Lords! Thats a lot of snakes.. and some look venomous too!" she exclaims. She looks carefully about the room, but knows innately that she has no chance of rock hopping through the mist. She looks around, and asks her peers "Do you think a thunderstone may scare the snakes out of here or just piss them off?? I don't think that the scrolls of Haste would help us very much, and I don't have any helpful spells prepared. I do have a grappling hook and some rope, if we can fashion a ladder of sorts tto an Island and then between them."

"That may not be a good idea," Kahel said at the mention of a thunderstone. "The water seems to calm them however. Hmm, you wouldn't be able to conjure a disk of force, would you Amelia? I've read of wizards using such a spell to transport acquired treasure. And it occurs to me that such a platform may aid those of us who can't make the jump reach those structures. Or if that is not an option, perhaps someone would be capable of tossing me towards one of those islands? Heights hold no fear to me, yet I don't like the chances of me making such a jump on my own."

She didn't relish the idea of wading through snake infested waters. But if need be, Kahel was willing to do so. In that case she would be cautious and move slowly enough to hopefully not disturb the reptiles.

"I could, in theory, try that. But it would be the equivalent of a mage dropping a lightning bolt spell on the pool. It may affect everything in the water. Or it may only affect a handful of them. Either way, it would likely agitate the rest of the snakes. Since they appear mostly docile right now, I'm hesitant to do anything to rile them up. Unless you like the idea of angering a swarm of poisonous snakes? Me, I'd rather take my chances trying not to disturb them."

Nice work, all. Lots of outside the box thinking.

Solange, there is actually a way you could position the moonlight bridges so that you will only need to use two uses of it and still be able to reach almost all of the islands. wraith can easily jump to the last one further away. Now everyone can avoid the nasty little snakes (auto-hit for 1 con damage each time).

Solange calls upon Sarenrae to guide them with the strength of the heavens and from the ground a shimmering bridge of softly glowing moonlight cascades over the snake-filled shallows. This seems to augment the calming powers of the water itself, and the snakes are lulled into submission.

The rest of the group crosses as Solange anchors the bridges. Hurrying from island to island you all learn not only enough to provide the Society with new insights into serpentfolk society and biology, but Amelia also discovers the ritual importance of the hot springs. By performing a short rite, she transforms a vial of the water into a potion of cure moderate wounds. You have earned another Victory Point! Two in one day, nice

Having a series of bridges created was a great relief to Kahel. It not only made passing the snakes easier, but kept her fur dry. With aheart felt thank you she began to study one of the pillars. It was with some fascination that she took notes on the biology she was uncovering.

"I am having some concerns about the use of the artifact. While the ability to learn about the past through first hand observation is fascinating, the implications regarding changing history are somewhat frightening."

More awesome then my usual lodge in some respects. We routinely blow every single will save when dealing with illusions... even after someone points out there is an illusion. Hilarious, true. But kind of sad when we spend 80 rounds in combat with the illusion of a statue, that's winning the fight.

As you are wrapping up the study of the plinths, the group turns the corner into the hallway and are surprised by another skulking patrol. Two of them look like the lizardmen you faced previously, but the one in back is different. This serpentine humanoid has bright scaly skin, a long sinuous tail, and a fanged serpent's head.

Knowledge local DC 14:

This monstrous humanoid is a degenerate serpentfolk. Normally they cast spells, but these weaker versions are just warriors. If you beat the DC by more than 5, ask more questions of me.

"Calistria's teets, what is that?!" Kahel blurted out in surprise.

She'd never seen anything like that tailed humanoid before. Nor had it come up during research in the Archives. Since so far everything had been hostile, she decided a cautious approach might be a good idea. After moving up a few feet Kahel began to gather energy in her hands.

Amelia steps out from the corner, and approaches the serpent folk. She waves her hands, throwing some colored sand into the air, and suddenly, a dazzling rainbow springs from her fingertips and engulfs the two leading fighters.
