Karter had strolled out of the Space-mart with an armful of spacy snacks. He'd open the Crater-Jacks box and handed over the decoder ring to Francis. Sipping on a cup of hot jawa, he says wisely of having no clue what to do, "More to this mystery, the paper is." Karter looks around for any writing kit or parts of one...

Francis decides to find a local alchemist. "Determine what is on this paper and we will reward you handsomely for your time and your silence." he says.

Murder him after the job is complete...

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Francis finds a chemist skilled in such things. He throws the paper into a machine to analyze its components and takes a quick look at an output screen. He laughs and says, "50 gold! This is an easy one." After receiving his payment, he tells you, "Just give it some heat. Or rub some vinegar on it. Here," he then hands you a jar from behind the counter.

When revealed, the message details Elliece’s last orders: a simple instruction to report to an address in Hell Harbor—the warehouse of Roweena Kellet that you examined earlier! It seems that the entire spy network has finally been uncovered, all connections and weavings exposed.

---

Tessa is quite pleased with the thoroughness of your search and the amount of information you have gathered to uncover that the Empire is indeed employing a network of spies in the sector and planning something extreme in the near future. She promises you her support and her vote in the Pirate Council, should you ever need to call on her.

Coming soon is the the annual Free Captains’ Regatta, a time-honored
tradition and one of the few opportunities that lesser, independent captains have to increase their station and status among the pirates. The Free Captains’ Regatta is a grueling race open to any Free Captain with a ship, and while many captains and ships do not finish the race (or even survive it), the regatta has no shortage of competitors each year, for the rewards are truly worth the risk—a hefty prize purse, lordship of a small moon, and a seat on the Pirate Council of the Shackles....

Xerxes doesn't hear any specifics but you know that dozens of ships enroll every year. For the past five years the race has been won by the Master of the Gales but they are sitting out this year and have offered to officiate instead, leaving the outcome up for debate. Several off the opposition have already declared themselves ready for the race: The Albatross, Barnacled B&@!$, Chimera's Teeth, Darcy's Pillage, Kelizandri's Favor, Promise's Bounty, Redcap, Space Largess, Skullduggery, Nebularunner, Sullied Strumpet, Sonic Wraith, and The Wormwood.

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

The race is coming up soon and after spending some time on last-minute diagnostics on the Millennium Yak, the day has come at last.

The race begins first thing in the morning. Tessa Fairwind comes aboard your ship to wish you smooth sailing and good luck, as do other friends and allies such as Dindreann of the House of Stolen Kisses.

After over an hour of shouting, cursing, and jostling for position, the contenders arrange themselves in rough formation behind the starting line drawn through an empty area of space with powerful laser beams.

All eyes look to a gargantuan projection of the Master of the Gales, who stands atop a rocky promontory on a nearby planet but his likeness is being broadcast out into space for all the ships to see. He raises both arms to the sky and unleashes a flashing bolt of lightning down into the sky, signaling the start of the race.

First you must pilot your way clear of the milling ships by making two sailing checks. You can aid one person and your fancy new console gives the final check a +5. Your success (or failure) on these determines your position early on in the race.

The Silted Shrouds are an extensive series of thick nebulous clouds and the course steers right through them. There are no up-to-date charts of the Silted Shrouds, as the dust is constantly conglomerating and colliding as new bodies are formed and destroyed.

You need to make four Survival checks to navigate your way through. Characters with at least 5 ranks in Knowledge (geography) or Knowledge (local) gain a +2 bonus on the checks. Again, you can all aid one person if you want.

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Correct on the sailing checks.

Luckily with Sh'yl at the helm you avoid any catastrophic collisions coming off the starting line and secure yourself a comfortable position in the middle of the pack. The real test comes in Silted Shrouds, where Xerxes' superior navigation keeps you on track. When you emerge from the nebulous clouds, you find that you have gained on several ships and are now in the top quarter of contestants.

Two jagged planets, called the Iris’s Splinters, lie straight ahead with the race course directed between them. As the first few ships come closer, however, you see that the planets were only hiding the real threat: a giant shelled creature flying through space, nearly as big as some of the ships!

You have a few options here. With three successful DC 25 sailing checks you can try to outmaneuver it and fly past it. Failure means you will have to fight it off for a while and you may fall behind. Or you can wait for it to engage with another ship and then dart past, requiring no checks but guaranteeing that a few ships will probably pass you during your hesitation.

You're in a race! No taking 10 right now.

Unfortunately you are not able to dodge the giant shelled space creature, which turns to snap at you! It's a gargantuan creature so the Millenium Yak is still quite a bit bigger. You can fling spells at it from afar or if it gets close and you feel like being adventurous and space-fighting, go for it. Otherwise you can assume the Yak is outfitted with phase canons (ballistae) and fire them like normal. I'll accept other creative actions as well.

Karter slips and misses the invisible target but Sh'yl keeps his cool, channeling the Force to gain another 2d100 ⇒ (18, 26) = 44 feet on the Wormwood. Meanwhile Xerxes stabs several times before he finally feels his psyblade catch, digging deep into the invisible invader!

Francis moves up to the space deck. "This is from my deepest hatred, Wormwood!" Francis yells as he is sure his team can handle the intruders.

Fireball: 10d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 6, 6, 2, 6, 1, 4, 1, 2) = 32 Hits at 480 ft.

Francis is not sure how to fight against the invisible enemies, but they don't seem to be slowing Sh'yl down at all so he instead focuses his efforts on winning the race by hitting the Wormwood with a fireball. The Wormwood swerves and loses a bit of speed as the Millenium Yak inches ever closer to catching up! Only 316 - 2d100 ⇒ 316 - (8, 98) = 210 feet ahead!

Meanwhile, the stalkers continue to knock into Sh'yl, desperate to disrupt his piloting skills.
