Sorry guys! I hadn't forgotten, I've just been so busy I was struggling to keep my other games updated and decided to give Brelar a few extra days. He must still be having trouble though.

Bert thinks hard about the problem. He knows that bindings are complex spells and can even be strengthened by having assistants lend their aid. However, by studying the appropriate auras Brelar is quite sure that Xin must have done the binding spell himself (i.e. CL 20).

Bert and Brelar also know that you can't dispel a binding spell with dispel magic or a similar effect, though an antimagic field or mage's disjunction affects it normally. A bound extraplanar creature cannot be sent back to its home plane by dismissal, banishment, or a similar effect.

Bert is fully aware that demons are chaotic creatures and unlike devils are very likely to forget their promises and fail to fulfill their end of the bargain. However, this demon seems particularly desperate to get out of this place and likely wants little more than to flee back to her home plane.

"I have no means to relieve you of your bindings, demon." the Varisian man states with a shrug. "Nor would I, if I could."

"As much as I detest the binding of a free-willed creature, I also abhor senseless violence set upon innocents, which is undoubtedly what you will seek after you regain your freedom." Karn offers. "However, I am not the leader of the group and if your freedom is what we require to save the rest, then perhaps I will have to hunt you down across the planes after we have finished our quest."

Karn has neither AMF or MD, so he is content with the destruction of the embodiment of chaotic evil.

Ok, sorry for the delay. I was giving some time for responses but was also hoping the delay would give Brelar time to jump back in but we should just keep pushing forward. Hopefully having BS playing Karn will make it less onerous for you guys to tag-team botting Brelar while he's still gone.

Belmedra sighs and raises her six swords. "I have been so long alone and yet your company already bores me. I wish I had been sent someone more useful."

Hey, look at that! Last map ever now updated. That's 31 total maps we've been through and some of those are the huge level maps from the earlier books.

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Phew! Over the peak of pollination so posting should be better for a while (until I'm gone Friday-Saturday).

Argust and Karn work together to quickly kill the demon; because of the strong binding she is not send back to the Abyss but rather lies dead in front of you.

And she didn't even get to use her fancy weapons! Which were:

You find on her a +2 abysium longsword of life stealing, an adamantine longsword, a horacalcum longsword, a +3 inubrix longsword, a +1 construct-bane noqual longsword, and a +1 flaming burst hot siccatite longsword. In addition there are 240 pounds of raw abysium in here, worth a total of 24,000 gp.

With the guardian removed, you can exit through the door she was guarding. As you cross the threshold, mechanical sounds and the hum of arcane runes begin echoing through the palace.

Gears, levers, cogs, bars, and other construct components lie scattered haphazardly throughout this chamber, creating an uneven, shifting surface to stand on. Some of these components are barely larger than an inch, while the largest measure 10 feet in diameter. Crystal shelves are littered with thousands of molds and castings of intricately engraved armored plates and human-like appendages, while heaps of shattered fragments of transparent crystal lie scattered everywhere. Runes flow like thick liquid along the crystal walls, casting strange shadows among the debris.

Those who can read Thassilonian can correctly interpret the runes on the wall, which are ancient scrawlings from Xin, akin to what one might expect to see on a mad scientist’s laboratory chalkboard.

DC 25 Knowledge (arcana):
You determine that someone crafted a very powerful construct in this room.

DC 35 Knowledge (arcana):
You can also determine that the construct created here incorporated elements of all seven skymetals, and likely had an element of animation via a captured soul of immense power since fragments of crystal bear certain similarities to what one might expect of components from a spell like magic jar or trap the soul, only much more potent.

Aaaaand you should level up for the last time, as we only have two more combats!

Going to GenCon?

With Lore Master, Bert can take 10 for a 41 Knowledge (Arcana) result.

Bert skips around the room, heedless of the shifting surface (+19 Acrobatics, and a +22 Reflex save), ooh-ing and aah-ing over the various items present while he jots notes to himself. As he goes, though, he starts slowing down and getting a bit more serious. "Uh-oh! Someone built a really tough construct here, and unless I'm really out to lunch it looks like the thing was set up to be driven by a captured soul--a really, really tough soul. After what the demon told us about Xin still being around, I bet it's his soul. The construct was made using all seven skymetals, too. Hmmm...think we should retreat and get some more stuff before we come back here and take it on?"

EF--would we be able to do that without messing things up at this stage?

You have the magical means to return to Magnimar for one last trip if you want, but the ominous mechanical sounds and arcane hum should tell you that Xin is not only aware of your presence (as if he wasn't already) but that he is actively preparing for you now.

Also, sadly I won't be at GenCon again this year. It just falls right during our busy field season. However, I might be able to make it next year. We'll see.

OK, I think I got all the treasure that we gathered and save for items that I know we kept we each get 83,558 gold pieces of spending cash.

Now I will ask for suggestions as to what to spend it on.

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Ok, I'm back so let's push along!

You make a quick trip to resupply and then return to Xin's palace to stop the mad Emperor's nefarious plans!

This might once have been an antechamber to the larger chamber beyond, but its walls are now shattered and crumbling, scorched black in places while still smoldering in others with the glowing embers from a dying fire. A smoky haze hangs low to the floor, and red-hot crystal shards pop and burst here and there on the walls, sending out tiny burning slivers in all directions. A twenty-foot-square slab of stone inscribed with glowing runes sits in the middle of the room’s floor, while sprawled to the west, where the fire damage seems to be the most recent, lies the blackened body of a forty-foot-tall giant dressed in exotic armor and clutching an immense sword.

As soon as you enter the room, the fires and smoke along the walls seem to quicken and churn and you are forced into another vision of the past:

Bent with age, the once-imperious emperor of Thassilon seems on the verge of crumbling under the weight of his elaborate robes as he finishes the final touch, polishing the immense central crystal of a sparkling three-legged, four-armed war machine. He pats a coppery metal panel on the machine’s side and smiles tiredly.

“Anon, I shed my feeble body at last for this new life!" he sighs. “One final rest to prepare the final apotheosis, and those seven traitors shall know their invulnerable lord’s displeasure. And Thassilon... my Thassilon... shall be rekindled.” In the vision, Xin gathers up the seven shards of the Sihedron, then descends a magical staircase into a lower chamber, but as he crosses its expanse, a dark shadow falls over him.

A massive giant, his black flesh pulsing with powerful red runes, suddenly manifests behind the emperor, heaving a gigantic sword over his head. Xin whirls, seems to recognize the giant, and snarls: “So this is how my loyalty is repaid—in my own blood, even as I forsake mortality!” He stumbles forward as the giant’s sword shatters the weakened palace’s crystal floor.

Calmly—smiling, even—Xin reaches out a bony hand as the giant prepares to strike again. “You will die. But I will live again!” Holding high the fragments of the Shattered Star, Xin closes his eyes and hurls them at the giant, and a blinding white fire consumes all.

DC 30 Knowledge (arcana):
You realize that for Xin to assume the mantle of the clockwork reliquary, it was first necessary to extract portions of his personal power—portions of his soul—from the Sihedron. Xin’s creation are so closely tied to his immortal essence that the clockwork reliquary is likely to be vulnerable to effects generated by the artifact’s current user that wouldn’t normally affect it.

As the vision ends, the rune giant’s remains suddenly stir....

DC 29 Knowledge (religion):
He is rising as a graveknight, although also still a rune giant.

Wow, is that damage right? I'm a dwarf, not a human. Also is this thing considered a giant? That will make one of the confirms a miss unless that is what the -4 is in the rolls. If it is, Argust is dead unless I can find something to prevent it.

If dead I think the Sihedron instantly casts True Resurrection though.

Well I charged so -2 AC for that. The second one would confirm and I would be alive at 4 HP since Life Link would take 10 of the damage, assuming that the damage rolls are correct (I'm not sure how Human Bane works on a dwarf or if he always gets to roll 4d6, just thought I'd ask).

I have Fast Healing 5 so I'd jump to 9 HP before Karn does anything. This is all assuming the dodge bonus wasn't in the rolls, of course. Otherwise I'm straight dead at -57 HP.

@Argust: Usually, when you turn undead, you don't retain your old types/subtypes, so human zombies are just undead. I'd imagine that a giant undead is still just undead type, not giant type, so no +4 AC against it.

Also, if I BoL you, there is a more than likely chance you are still dead... :(

It's type is listed as undead (augmented humanoid), but it also says "Graveknight rune giant" as the name of this monster, so I'm going to say the "augmented humanoid" subtype means he still enough of a giant for your bonuses to apply.

And yes, the damage is right (there is no human bane included); he's a gargantuan giant two-handing a longsword with power attack and that's a lot of damage. Yes, the -4 was from power attack.

If it's a book graveknight, I think you have to make a caster level check to get the spell off. They're nasty. Also, botting Brelar:

Before Karn can advance, the wizard casts a rapid abjuration, touching everyone except Argust. Touch range, sorry. Casting communal resist energy (fire); Karn, Bert, and Brelar now have resist fire 30.

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Sorry, Bert is right: Any creature that attempts to summon positive energy in this area (30' around him)—such as through a cleric's channel energy ability, a paladin's lay on hands, or any spell with the healing subtype—must make a concentration check (DC 26).

However (luckily for you guys):

Argust is enraged that the rune giant graveknight would have the audacity to wound him so severely and puts his sword to work. Although the graveknight is a tough to hit through his armor and thick skin, Argust digs his blade in deep several times and after the dust settles, the giant is lying on the ground in pieces!

As you watch though, the giant's armor begins piecing the body back together....

I emailed Brelar a few days ago that we're starting the final fight this week but haven't heard back from him. But we'll soldier on I guess!

The square slab of rune-scribed stone is a stairwell similar to the one you encountered on the main floor of the palace. Once activated, the slab slowly transforms into a staircase heading up....

A throne made of pale white metal sits to the north, with a rune-etched plate floating lazily in the air before it.

As the throne room seems to have been abandoned, you check the door beyond into the dead heart of Xin!

The walls of this cathedral-like chamber stretch nearly a hundred feet into the air above, towering sheets of black crystal along which dance ripples of strange energies. Crumbled shards of crystal litter the floor, while an immense Sihedron rune has been carved into the floor in the center of the chamber. The energy rippling on the walls congregates upon a strange crystal the size of a man’s head, embedded in the center of the rune and pulsing as if to the rhythm of an unseen, crystalline heart.

There is little of note in this room save its occupants, for it is here that Xin’s new body has waited for so long to be activated. The clockwork reliquary stands in the center of the room atop the Sihedron rune that pulses with the palace’s energies. The reliquary’s wickedly curved components shift and twitch as the PCs enter, and the bones of the ancient wizard emperor Xin, drawn into the reliquary upon his death as one of his contingencies, seem to glow within their crystalline prison, shifting and seeming to be larger than the skeleton of a mere man has any right to be. The palace walls shudder, and creatures composed of crystal step out of them at the same time the energies f lowing along the walls descend and coalesce into beautiful but stern humanoid figures. As Xin’s spirit quickens within the reliquary, a small force of axiomite and elder crystallis minions held in reserve step forth to protect him. The clockwork reliquary comes to grinding, shrieking life, and the light of the flamma horacalcum Bert still maintains in his keeping causes the bones inside its central crystal to change into an image of Xin himself!

Sounds good to me!

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Bah! I remember updating yesterday but it must've gotten eaten and I didn't notice.

Sounds reasonable for Brelar.

Argust drives his blade into the axiomites, taking one of them down in the first three swings and leaving the next one heavily wounded with his backswings. Bert finds that missing the crysallises would be hard and by focusing his shots in one spots he maximizes his damage against their tough bodies.

Karn then steps back and manages to hit the injured axiomite once, but it is not enough to bring her down. Brelar then speeds things up and drops a burning cloud in the room!

fire: 6d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 4, 5, 3, 5) = 28
Ref: 5d20 ⇒ (18, 16, 20, 6, 1) = 61

The fire doesn't appear to have any effect on Xin's clockwork reliquary and the axiomites likewise are quick to cover themselves and don't seem injured at all. The crysallises look a bit charred though.

---

Apparently still able to see or sense through the cloud, Xin tries to steal back the Sihedron from Argust? Bert? I don't remember who was holding it. "It is mine! And I will raise my empire anew with this prize!"

cmb steal/disarm: 1d20 + 34 ⇒ (13) + 34 = 47

It then sends six inubrex darts flying through the cloud at Argust! These darts ignore any armor or shield bonus granted by metal armor or shields.
