Sorry for the delay. Had to drive up to Indy today for my middle daughter's yearly cardiology appt., and another meeting. 5+ hrs of driving, appointments and quick visits with relatives left little to no time to check threads today.

No problem! I've had a really busy week too. Although Mrs. Endless will be out of town today-tomorrow so I'll be bach'n it up tonight I guess.

How did Mrs. Endless do in the marathon?

Seven minutes faster than last year, so that was awesome. Only a couple minutes shy of Boston qualifying time. I think she ran an average of 8:19 minute miles and she needed 8:10 minute miles to qualify.

New Berlin.

Some of our friends moved up here this summer. We went to a concert at the Pabst last night, and maybe going to the Powwow today.

I knew you were up this way, but couldn't remember if you were in Madison like EF, or somewhere else.

Joliet IL, actually. I lived in Madison for twenty years or so, though, and would move back to WI in a heartbeat if I could get a job that pays anything like what I'm making here.

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Yeah, we're really enjoying Madison so far. Great city. Our long term goal is to move back to Bloomington if I can get a faculty position there but I don't think either of us would be upset staying here in Madison. Besides, I've got six years of grad school and a post doc before I need to think about that.

My friends checked out Madison and thought is was awesome.

@Argust: How do you like D&D Encounters and how does it compare to PFS? Is that 4E or 5E? I can't keep the name of DnD's organized campaigns straight.

I actually started my RPG life with a few games of 4E before I switched to PF with the Bloomington PFS group. I didn't know what I was doing enough back then to have any opinion on 4E but in general it's pretty unpopular in the RPG world.

I thought about picking up the 5E book at GenCon but didn't feel like spending money on it without seeing it in action first, especially after I've invested so much time, energy, and money on PF. If I'm going to invest in another RPG it will be something that's totally different from high-fantasy PF/DnD like The One Ring (which is probably my all-time favorite RPG) or Shadows Over Esteren.

5th edition went away from the 4th edition style of a MMORPG on a tabletop (at least that's the way I describe it). It is much more like Pathfinder and previous editions of D&D and in fact they have started the Adventurer's League, with is sorta like Pathfinder Society's organized play. There are log sheets but no real record keeping on a grand scale like PFS, its much like the honor system in that regard.

4th edition fights could easily last a couple of hours. In 5th we could have 3 or 4 small fights in the two hours that we play. The podcast that I am a part of (Max's Minions) is 4th edition and some of those fights can last three hours.

The basic rules for 5th edition is on their website as a free PDF.

My home group just started a 5e game and so far I am loving it as a light change of pace from Pathfinder. The math is much smaller and the advantage/disadvantage mechanic is usually a much easier/quicker way to deal with situational stuff than piling on more modifiers.

Yeah, I like that and the fact you can break up your movement. The PCs are 3rd level now so we'll see if the extra abilities they get at higher levels starts to bog things down some.

However I'm constantly mixing up my rule systems. I'll try to apply something from Pathfinder or even 4th edition D&D when I shouldn't, LOL. We'll see how often I do it tonight as I'm about to leave to go play. I'll let you guys know how many victims I collect.

Speaking of things that are completely unlike 3.x/PF, someday I may actually get to play 2nd edition Nobilis. The rule book is a thing of beauty, but it's a very strange game--I wouldn't want to play it with just anyone.

For Bert's L11 feat, I'm considering taking Arcane Strike. It's a swift action to activate so he can't use it on the same round as when he activates his Archaeologist's Luck ability, but it's another +3 to damage on the lingering rounds--will take his top bullet damage up to 1d6+16, including Point-Blank Shot, Deadly Aim, Luck, Focused Aim deed, and Arcane Strike. Any other suggestions?

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

That seems like a good one. Probably should have picked that up for Trotter but then he'd never get the chance to use some of his immediate spells I guess. And his gun was really strong mid-level but as he got higher he became more of a buffer because I didn't focus on the gun enough to keep up with the other damage-dealers.

I've taken Bleeding Critical since it seemed like the best thing I could find. Any other suggestions?

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Critical feats are pretty good for a fighter, especially if you usually use your greatsword with a 17-20 crit range on it. I can't really think of anything else that would be good; you've got all the best ones already that I can see.

I think I've got Bert leveled. For his 4th level spell I took Improved Invisibility, and I went with Arcane Strike for his feat. (In addition to giving him extra damage, it'll make those mw pistols we got from the pale stranger hit as magic weapons.)

Sorry I'm so behind getting Brelar leveled up.

I have a question about scribe scroll and maximize spell metamagic feat...I read over the metamagic section of the feats entry on the prd and I'm still not 100% clear. If I scribe a maximized fireball it's still only priced at a CL 5 spell?

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

To scribe a normal spell the formula is generally:

12.5 gp x CL x spell level

You can choose to scribe it at any CL you want between the minimum CL and your current CL. So as a level 10 wizard you can scribe a scroll of fireball (CL 5) for 187.5 gp or you can scribe one at CL 7 for 262.5 gp or CL 10 for 375 gp.

Adding metamagic to scrolls is possible, but a bit more confusing. There's not much information on it.

CRB Metamagic Feats wrote:
Magic Items and Metamagic Spells: With the right item creation feat, you can store a metamagic version of a spell in a scroll, potion, or wand. Level limits for potions and wands apply to the spell's higher spell level (after the application of the metamagic feat). A character doesn't need the metamagic feat to activate an item storing a metamagic version of a spell.

And the crafting section on scrolls says nothing about metamagic.

After doing a little research though it seems like you use the adjusted spell level when determining the price but you can still make the CL whatever you want. So you could make a scroll of maximized fireball (CL 5) for 375 gp (12.5 x 5 CL x 6 spell level) that would do 5d6 maximized to 30 damage. Or you could make a scroll of maximized fireball (CL 7) for 525 gp (12.5 x 7 CL x 6 level spell), etc.

I think that's right and I hope it makes sense.

I'm torn on what feat and spell to take. I get a 4th level spell, that could be Blessing of Fervor, Holy Smite, or Spiritual Ally (among others).

Feat-wise, I'm torn. I originally took Augment summoning, but then didn't take any of the summon monster spells. I could take Cleave, and retrain Aug. Sum. (and Spell Focus Conj, for that matter) and take Extra Channel/Rage/Rage Power/Revelation.

Bert will take his next level as a bard, and swap sift (a spell he never uses) for mending (which AFAICT can fix a misfired gun). He'll take +1 to CON, which gets him up to a base 14; his HP jump to 112 between the level increase and the new +12 from CON. His archaeologist's luck bonus goes up to +3. Still thinking about new spells; getting a 1st level and a 4th level spell.

Any chance we can do another marathon night anytime soon? No rush, since this is still one of the faster-paced PbPs I'm in at the moment.

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Yeah, I'd be up for that! Now that I'm back in Madison I don't have anything going on most nights. The only night conflict I will have in the future is our weekly Roll20 Carrion Crown group with some old Bloomington friends but that group hasn't decided on a day/time yet for this semester so I'm free every night for now.

We're already almost half-way done with book 4 iirc. But some of the upcoming combats might be pretty sticky so that may slow things down a bit.

No, the southwest counties are on Central too, Evansville (Vanderburgh), Perry county, and a couple others went Central, because their near ????, St Louis?

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Oh, I didn't realize the southern tip was central too. It's always a pain because South Bend is only 30-40 minutes east of LaPorte (where I grew up) but was on a different time zone. That was actually the cause of me, Becca, and a friend of ours missing a wedding in South Bend last year. It's ok, we didn't actually like her anyways but just felt obligated to go so we weren't too upset about missing the ceremony and we slipped into the reception and she was none the wiser about us missing, haha. It was the best mistake ever.
