They know they couldn't stand up against you but don't exactly trust you.

You move past the kobolds and through the double doors to the east.

DC 10 Knowledge (engineering) or Knowledge (history):
You notice that the architecture is more sophisticated here than near the entrance. Despite the millennia that have passed since its construction, the stonework shows little wear, except where the kobolds have made “improvements.”

Just five feet from the double door, a granite statue of a human woman stands in a running pose. The head of the statue is turned to look over her shoulder, her face locked in a silent scream.

DC 12 Knowledge (geography):
She is Keleshite in ethnicity.

DC 15 Knowledge (local):
You recognize that her gear is typical of Aspis Consortium scouts working in the Mwangi Expanse.

DC 15 Sense Motive or Craft (sculptures):
You notice that the anguish and fear in her expression is too real and her features are disturbingly lifelike.

DC 15 Knowledge (arcana) or Knowledge (nature):
You remember that some creatures, mainly magical beasts and monstrous humanoids, can petrify their victims.

"They don't trust us, but they know we'd beat them into a pulp. I'm hoping they truly send us to their chief to treat with us."

"Didn't they say north?"

A bit confused by the map. I would think north is back the way we came, but the map seems to continue. Or should we go north through this small passage?

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

They meant go through the east doors (which you just came through) and then the temple is to the north, which is where you can find the chief (supposedly).

To the north and around the bend you see at the center of the complex a large fountain, a white marble statue of a dwarf in scholarly robes facing east in a defiant posture. In one hand, the dwarf holds a staff, and in the other an open book. While most of the statue's elaborate details are still intact, its face has crumbled away, and water pours down from two holes where the statue's eyes had once been.

DC 13 Perception:
You notice pickaxe marks, suggesting that the statue has been vandalized.

DC 13 Linguistics (+5 and you can make untrained if you understand Dwarven):

Dustwich takes a wide stance and concentrates for a moment, summoning a wall of earth in the narrow hallway. "There," they say curtly. "Now it can't look at us at least. We should probably avoid killing these kobolds' pet, even if it is a petrifying beast. I'll block off the other hallways as well so it doesn't sneak up on us. Let's keep heading for the temple."

Kinetic Cover walls marked on map, assuming we don't go into initiative. First the hallway immediately near us, then south of the dwarf statue, then east, then the northern most one when we get to the doors to the north.

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

So do you want to use Dustwich's cover to avoid it? Where do you want to go? Straight to the double doors?

Dustwich suggests going around to make sure they find the correct entrance to the temple.

Drew a line on the map for Dustwich's proposed route. At the "X," they'll look around for any other doors; if none, they'll put up another Kinetic Cover and go toward the double doors.

That's just my suggestion, though. The covers are pretty easy to take down if the basilisk chooses to attack them (AC 0, 4 HP), but I was hoping to block its line of sight and bank on it not being very aggressive.

Concur with Dusty's path. I'm not even sure you'll need the Kinetic Cover based on how docile the basilisk is depicted. I'd be more about exploring except we're supposed to be making nice with the kobolds.

Sure! Whichever way leads to the temple.

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Going around to the north you are presented with a partially collapsed corridor full of rubble. It looks quite treacherous and you are forced to backtrack and go around the other way. The basilisk has not been attacking the cover but you can hear it whining from behind the barrier. You then make it to the double doors leading (supposedly) to the temple!

A huge block of intricately sculpted stone dominates the center of this vast temple chamber. To the east, a flight of stairs leads up to a walkway, which connects to the stone block's surface. Six pillars lie around the edges of the room, each decorated with carved patterns of scales and dragon heads. Several large paintings of dragons adorn the floor.

The ceiling rises to a uniform height of 25 feet. The top of the huge block of stone is connected to a stairway by a walkway with a curiously round cross-section which you recognize as resembling a warhammer, the holy symbol of the dwarven god Torag.

There are a number of interesting features in the temple:

DC 12 Knowledge (dungeoneering) or Knowledge (engineering) check, or a DC 17 Perception check:
The six pillars are badly corroded. Any of the pillars can be collapsed (hardness 6, hp 20, Break DC 18) to deal 2d6 points of bludgeoning damage to all creatures in a 25-foot line. The affected squares also turn into difficult terrain.

Walkway: Moving faster than half speed along the uneven shaft of the massive stone hammer requires a DC 12 Acrobatics check. Any creature that fails the check by 5 or more falls 15 feet to the temple floor.

---

A group of kobolds is frantically praying to a massive golden statue as if they wanted it to wake up. The winged statue is standing atop a fifteen-foot-tall block of stone, its back against a wall decorated with many gold-leaf murals depicting historical scenes. Suddenly, the statue starts moving, flexing its wings, and roaring in a voice resembling a metallic hunting horn.

As soon as the kobolds notice you, they scream, “There they are!” and the Golden Guardian turns to regard you. It roars in anger “You should not have come here!” and starts moving menacingly toward you as the kobolds stare in awe.

Like the temple itself, the Golden Guardian’s appearance reflects both dwarven and kobold aesthetics. It has scales on its skin, and a relatively narrow head and broad snout that give it a draconic appearance.

DC 27 KN (nature):
The creature is a rare type of gargoyle that is especially large and robust, and is made partly of gold. Its posture is more regal than that of the usual, crouching gargoyles.
