Later in the day, Erevan shares with his fellow Pathfinders that he has been selected to be a guard.

"It comes as no surprise, to be sure," the half-elf says. "We should begin to formulate a plan. Having me on the inside will ensure our success."

The next day, Erevan begins working with the scouts. His keen eyes catch every detail. He approaches Enyro, though without orders, and says "Have you considered how open this section of the approach is? Might you consider this alternate path here? Would it not provide much more cover for the caravan?" Erevan says, pointing out an area where ambushers might hide.

Workshop:

While Belinda stumbles about, she actually trips over a body, which she then identifies as the recently-dead corpse of one of the guards.... Belinda will need a Heal or Perception check to quickly find some evidence to prove her innocence or a Disguise or Stealth check to make it look like the death was an accident.

During one of his rants about the proper way to move the transport, Professor F mentions something that is apparently quite taboo to these workers: Nex. "How could you mention that place? So much mishap around there, don't you know its bad luck to talk about that while working on a project?" Professor F must perform some minor
ritual of restitution with a successful Bluff, Knowledge
(local), or Knowledge (religion) check or be thrown out of
the workshop.

Sebastian has more luck and is able to get along just well with Duciar. As it seems Sebastian has a knack for working on these sorts of things, Ducian puts him in charge of securing the secret door. You discover the location of the transport’s secret door, the only means of entering the inner chamber without teleportation magic.

Barracks:

Enyro nods rapidly to Erevan's suggestions for, despite the half-elf's lack of official qualifications, it can not be denied that the suggestions are worth considering. Erevan is given a bit more knowledge about the route as Enyro asks for further suggestions. You do not need to track the convoy through the desert, and the guards won't notice you until you come within 60 feet of the transport.

I'll see if Hennet and Irira want to try something even without the proper paperwork and a couple of you have some things to respond to anyways.

"Sacrilege!" one of them shouts back. "Get him out of here, the crazy old coot!" another fires back. Ducian, the man of so few words, simply comes up to Professor and barks, "Leave."

Luckily Belinda spots a heavy box nearby and moves its on top of the man's midsection before anyone spots her. When the body is found by someone else, it is assumed that he died of the accident and no aspersions are cast towards Belinda.

Barracks:

Inira and Hennet prove to be quite as knowledgeable as Erevan and Enyro is impressed enough to let them see some of his plans. While reviewing the material, they note an ideal ambush site and even spot the observation points marked along the convoy's route. You can essentially show up early and have an hour to prepare. You'll also automatically receive a surprise round from 30' away.

Furthermore 1d2 ⇒ 1 Inira gains a reputation as a very trustworthy scout among the guards and is invited to join as an independent scout. As such to the guards it wouldn't be unexpected for her to appear suddenly from anywhere, allowing her to begin the surprise round from any position outside the transport.

=====

With three days having passed since you arrived in Pashow, Emir Guldis is ready to begin his convoy's first practice run the next day.

Ziralia meets with you secretly to get an update. "I hear that some of you have made quite an impression and have been taken on as full guards and scouts. That is excellent. For the rest of you, I can make excuses for you to excuse yourselves from the barracks and workshop tomorrow so that you can complete whatever plan you have in mind."

Ziralia also provides you with 3500 gp to purchase equipment and lends you an adamantine morningstar, a pair of eyes of the eagle, a horn of fog, and a vest of escape but makes it clear that she expects you to return those items at the conclusion of your mission.

So you've got the night to plan anything you want and then tomorrow you don't need to track the caravan because you already know of an ideal ambush location. I've added a map if you want to set up positions.

Belinda ensures the poor professor has a nice warm cup of tea to help him feel better.

"So what do we know.. I've made some notes.."

Wagons:
* Sebastian discovers all of its building points and defensive abilities. He even discovers a secret, lead-lined compartment in the transport's back left corner. In fact, he finds a small inconspicuous "X" etched into a tile int he floor covering this secret chamber.
* Belinda also notes something odd while she works on the transport's exterior: Temeera has ordered a few of the workers to take turns walking around the transport's interior in circles.
* Heat exhaustion trap
* Notes +4 to disable the trap (DC25); ties to Aspenthar's royal family.
* wards to foil teleportation magic and shunt the transport into an extradimensional speace
* You discover the location of the transport’s secret door, the only means of entering the inner chamber without teleportation magic

Guards:
* dog commands
* food for dogs
* chocolate to poison dogs
* Dancing lights signals to stop the wagons and send guards away
* guards speak highly of Prince Zinlo and the lifestyle of Aspenthar
* Guards may be in pay of Aspsis
* new guard may be a spy : Working with you today is a halfling recruit training as a scout named Varnic

Tactical:
* Erevan to replace one of the other guards that was to join the convoy

Inira is able to confirm that the caravan should be moving through this narrow pass from the north some time between 3-4 in the afternoon.

Erevan can pass along to everyone that he will be serving with another guard and a convoy mage. Both Erevan and the other guard will be leading trained desert dogs. This cadre will remain near the caravan at all times, although there will be dozens of other guards and mages in various formations around the transport serving as outriders. And you know the light signals for the different formations, so you can send them out far ahead or really wide to the side, essentially only leaving the core escort near the transport.

When Erevan asks the other guards and scouts about Zinlo, most of them either shrug or open applaud the Prince for his leadership and generosity.

Anything else to prep or are you ready? I've seen some ideas thrown around for a shopping list; you've got plenty of gold so just start letting me know how much of each thing you're picking up.

I've added the transport to the map if you want to set up your positions. Erevan can be either behind or in front; the other guard will take the other position and each of you will have a dog. Inira can also start pretty much wherever she wants. The rest of you can be within 30' of the transport's path.

Suggestions:
5 scrolls of endure elements - 125p - perused
4 scrolls of invisibility - 600gp - probably preused
6 potions of expeditious retreat - 300gp - save for emergency
6 potions of long strider - 300gp - save for departure
6 potions of pass without trace - 300gp save for departure
6 hot weather outfits 48gp
4 masks/disguises/whatever - a few coins
5 saps 5 gp

That is only around 1700gp
A wand of CLW would take it to about 2450
Actually a wand of longstrider might be almost worth investing in rather than potions, if we had anyone who can use it... Speaking of which, can anyone use scrolls of invisibility or do we need to go the potion route?

That list looks fine to me, although Sebastian can make extracts of some of those spells.

"No need to buy a scroll of endure elements or a potion of expeditious retreat for myself, I can create suitable extracts." Sebastian explains as he thinks over everything the group has learned so far.

"So, Erevan will act as a convoy guard with the proper amount of chocolate to incapacitate the dogs. Although the rest of us will show up an hour early, around 3:00pm one of us will create a light signal to pull the mobile guards away from the transport, while everyone not Erevan will sneak in using invisibility scrolls. I assume one of us can cast the necessary magic to create the light signal? If not, we should invest in an magical object that creates the effect."

"Once we all gather at the wagon, we will quickly render the remaining guards unconscious, then I will deactivate the transport's trap, we will enter the transport, go through the secret door, take the false elixir, then quickly leave using longstrider and pass without a trace potions. We can utilize the horn of fog to further cover our escape. Does that sound correct, or have I misremembered or left out some aspect of the operation?"

"Ah, also, I suggest whoever is most perceptive wear the Eyes of the Eagle, while I should don the Vest of Escape to help me disarm the trap more effectively, although I will appreciate the assistance from anyone else that possesses those skills. Whoever can utilize the adamantine morningstar should take that one. It really does not matter who takes the Horn of Fog, I suppose."

If no one can cast Dancing Lights, we might need to buy a scroll with a number of the spell in case the first couple of UMD checks go poorly.

Sounds like a good list, although I have a CLW wand, so don't know that we need to buy one. I am a little concerned that even if we have someone using scrolls, the time it takes to case them is too long... and if we get separated or someone goes down, we are in trouble. So I suggest potions for most (endure elements we can use ahead, so scrolls good, and should eliminate the need for hot weather outfits).

Ok, it sounds like you guys have a plan formed to an extent so I'm going to push ahead to the action if that's ok.

With protection against the desert heat and a plan set, Erevan and Inira take their respective positions as guard and scout in the caravan as the rest of the company hides out in the desert near the narrow pass.

Around 3:00 in the afternoon Professor F sends light signals into the sky to signal a wide formation, keeping the scouts and other parties of guards well out of the way....

If you would like to drink/cast invisibility and take your surprise round actions, go ahead. I've added the dogs, the guard (green), and the caravan mage (pink). Erevan is leading the blue dog.

I imagine our goal is to subdue these guys as best we can in the surprise round before they signal for reinforcements using dancing lights. We can place ourselves anywhere within 30ft right?

The Professor, wheezing a bit as he hobbles in the heat (which he's ignoring thanks to magic), leans forward slightly, waiting to gauge which of their opponents requires magical encouragement to subdue.

The Professor will go last in the surprise round (delaying to make it happen) and use Hold Person (DC16 Will) on whichever target appears least likely to be subdued. I imagine the wizard is the most important one to subdue quickly unless the warrior has a horn or whistle.

The other dog, under the command of Erevan, looks quite confused and sick.

The guard runs around the other side of the transport and swings his sword at Sebastian. He mumbles to himself, "Damn it, I need back-ups. I can't do the light spell!"

Hennet digs his rapier deep into the dog's side but these are well-trained fighting dogs and it still stands despite the gaping wound. The guard shakes his head, again denying Professor F's mental control. The guard is able to dodge Inira's arrows but this leaves him open to a strike from Erevan!

Belinda moves around the blue dog, hoping that in its sickened condition, and not knowing who is its enemy, it won't bite at her.

Although she would give up an AOO, here is the acrobatics check to try and avoid it

Whoops, forgot to confirm that bite. GM mistake so consider that a freebie.

@Erevan: you know the commands but it still takes a Handle Animal check as a move action. I don't see that as one of your skills so I'll assume you weren't able to do it.

Sebastian stabs but the guard is too well-trained and senses the attack before it hits. Having no luck with mind control, the Professor simply calls down a blessing on the ambushers.

Belinda then knocks one of the dogs unconscious as Inira hits the guard with a blunted arrow. Erevan also hits the guard, who is still looking quite prepared to fight.
