"Like whoa, greetings fellow Pathfinders."

Buckwheat looks over at Oxirane, squints for a moment.

"Whoa man, you got a lot of square vibe goin' on. Let me help you mellow out and expand your mind. There's so many ways the man tries to keep up down, and I've got so many ways to help us check out."

Coughing, not unlike that of an oversized cat dislodging a hairball can be heard as the nearly seven-foot cloaked figure hobbles into the room.

"Yessss... Pathfinders! Greetingssss!"

Flanking the nagaji, whose scales look like they have seen better days (wasting curse, lame curse) are a half-dozen assorted nagaji that all wear looks of worry and concern as they carry small wooden boxes about the size of large melons. Small, ornate glassware can be heard tinkling from within (caravan boon).

"Sirusssss bringsss... ssssamplesss... free for Path-finding friendsssss!"

Image of label on vials (note: this label matches the attire of the nagaji before you)

Siruss then devolves into the harsh, abrupt language of his kin (imagine you've stepped into a vietnamese nail salon), leaving you all to believe he is not just scolding his cohorts, but perhaps threatening them with intense physical violence, as they begin bowing repeatedly and setting an assortment of goods about the briefing.

"Sssirussss happy invigorate tonic... good for what ailssss you... sshhhiine armor, condition hair.... everything!! Ssssssheila Heidmarch endorse! Many referencessss! Very good!"

Despite everything, the nagaji seems very personable, charismatic and willing to please.

If you are one of our alchemists:

The alchemists in the group will quickly be able to ascertain the vials contain somewhat brackish water, perhaps locally sourced from a nearby river in Absalom, with some small amount of reagents added. Is that chipotle?

Buckwheat thinks to himself All property is theft anyway, probably not the right time to argue though.

Buckwheat thanks Siruss for the tonic as he picks up one of the vials and drinks it.

"Whoa, is that chipotle? I hope you got it from one of those independent spice co-ops in Galt rather than one of those horrible mass production farms in the Verduran Forest."

Buckwheat will offer Siruss one of his vials as a gesture of good will.

It is full of blue sparkles and smells slightly of stardust.

Vial:
Polypurpose Panacea.

I think you get to choose the effect off the menu that you want, but the one below is the intent.

Analgesic: You do not feel minor aches and pains, such as from arthritis, a cold, or a hangover, for 1 hour. For the duration, you gain a +2 resistance bonus against pain-related spells.

Siruss readily accpets the vial from Buckwheat and swirls around its contents while barking more harsh nagaji words at his cohorts. Several of them break out in an argument as they gesture at the vial, with even a few shaking their heads and storming out of the room.

Siruss bows low and apologizes profusely.

"Pleassse, excusssse Sirussss... jussst a moment..."

After leaving the room for a moment, much shouting can be heard before the oversized salesman returns with a broad smile on his face. He immediately begins bowing low upon his return.

"Yesss... internal mattersss... fixed now."

Siruss eyes Buckwheat's concoction suspiciously for a few moments, but finally ventures into removing the stopper and sampling the tiniest amount.

"Hmmm... thissss is good. Hard to make, yessss? Massster Buckwheat can only brew ssssssoo many per day, yessss?"

The nagaji's intentions in his questions are somewhat muddied (perhaps like the brackish water of his samples). Does he think you're a potential competitor? Is he planning to chain you in a cellar somewhere is his supply chain?

He is smiling, though.

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

You are assembled in a corner booth in the Whale's Belly, a rough drinking hall in Magnimar that dockworkers and laborers frequent.

"I've finished the arrangements," declares Venture-Captain Calisro Benarry as she clasps a mug in one hand and motions to the open seats around the table before you. She lowers her voice to avoid being overheard now. "On the way north i was telling you about some Thassilonian ruins that just resurfaced, and it's time to tell you the whole story. There's an island called Flintyreach a few hundred miles northwest of here, and thanks to all of the giants, the only folk with the guts to live there are half-orcs. Averaka's the largest half-orc town the world's ever seen, so as you might imagine," she notes, gesturing at her green skin, "that we got along pretty nicely."

"One of their scouts spotted fresh ruins recently, and the plan had been to have you along as we checked it out. The trouble is that the trek north took a lot longer than I'd hoped, and I'm past due to get back south to Garund and the Gloomspires. The long and short of it is that the Thassilonian site's all yours now, if you're still interested. I've secured a ship to take you there in good time, and I'll finish up a letter to introduce you to the Averakans in just a bit."

Benarry leans over the table. "There's some better news, though. For about ten years, Chief Gorgnak has ruled the local giants. It sounds like one of his underlings has rebelled and started capturing Gorgnak's croonies to work for her, and the chief is right pissed. My Averakan pal in Magnimar let me know that our half-orc kin are planning a big assault to strike the giants while they're squabbling, and you can use that chaos to clip through contested territory, check out the ruins, and make sure that anything you can't explore or bring back isn't likely to fall into the trolls' hands before we can send a bigger team to finish the job."

"Once the Grinning Pixie is sufficiently re-provisioned, I'm sailing south as fast as I can. That gives us a little while to talk if you have questions."

You might know more about Thassilon and the kingdoms of this area.

DC 15 Knowledge (history):
The region known as the Ironbound Archipelago was once known as Edasseril, one of the seven states that formed ancient Thassilon. The so-called Kingdom of Envy was rich in minerals and herds of various animals, and it was known to skirmish frequently and bloodily with its elven neighbors.

DC 20 Knowledge (history):
The most infamous of Edasseril’s rulers was Belimarius, runelord of envy. She was a master of abjuration, though if her arcane wards protected her during Earthfall, nobody witnessed her return.

DC 25 Knowledge (history):
Records suggest that Edasseril was once a peninsula, not an archipelago. A common theory suggests that large portions of Edasseril sank into the sea following Earthfall. These same seismic movements may have buried the most impressive ruins, many of which doubtlessly remain hidden.

You might know more about Averaka and the giants of Flintyreach.

DC 15 Knowledge (local):
Flintyreach is one of the larger islands in the Ironbound Archipelago, though few settlers have risked living there thanks to the many giants that rule its interior. The exception is Averaka, a thriving town comprised almost entirely of half-orcs.

DC 20 Knowledge (local):
Nearly all of Flintyreach’s giants pay homage to Gorgnak, a surprisingly charismatic hill giant who also has trolls, ettins, and a few ogres as part of his ragtag kingdom.

DC 25 Knowledge (local):
A council of three leads Averaka. Councilor Kalla Tusk-Breaker oversees military endeavors, Councilor Bravok oversees religious matters, and Councilor Suota Iron-Tongue oversees cultural interests.

Buckwheat lights up a sweet smelling pipe and tells a bit of a story

"So, like, once upon a time Edasseril was part of the main land mass, before that giant bummer earthfall happened. Edasseril's used to be ruled by the totally bogus Runelord of Envy, so I'd expect totally gnarly magical traps and stuff, even after all these years."

Buckwheat takes a nice long drag and offers to pass his pipe around before continuing.

"Ya man, trolls and ettins and Ogres, all enslaved to the man. Locally he's a fast jive talkin' hill giant named Gorgnak, but maybe he's not all bad, he's got a council of 3 and shit, so he doesn't just tell everybody what to do. One of them is even in charge of like arts and crafts and sporting events, Councilor Suota Iron-Tongue, unless things have changed."

"You should probably expect hill giants but I wouldn't be surprised if you ran into an ettin or two or some other type of giant as well. Averaka, though, is only dangerous if you pick fights with the locals. It’s the rest of the island that’s scary, thanks to all of the giants. Averaka’s been trying to wipe them out for decades, but it’s hard to get rid of trolls forever."

"One of the three councilors—Bravok—is a close friend of mine, and he travels widely to spread the word about Averaka. We half-orcs aren’t all bloodlust and carnage like the rumor mill would suggest, and Bravok’s a fine ambassador of our better qualities. Kalla is in charge of the guards and patrols, with a decorated past working for the one and only White Estrid. As Buckwheat said, Suota Iron-Tongue guides our lore, arts, and culture, helping define us not as half-breeds but as a true people. They may be stubborn at times, but there are few people I respect more."

Venture-Captain Benarry encourages you not to wait too long as she takes her leave. She has already hired a ship for you, after all, and it is waiting for you to board.

You discuss tactics and mission history while making good time to Averaka on the ship. Several half-orc longshoremen hail the vessel as it approaches the town's docks-most of which are crowded with fishing boats and more fearsome craft. As you disembark, the half-orcs warmly greet Baaldryn and ask the rest of you your business on the island.

"Oh, so you're the Pathfinders then?" an older half-orc male asks. "I should show you to the meeting hall then." Along the way, citizens continue to approach you, some asking where Calisro Benarry is, not bothering to hide their disappointment, grumbling, and complaining when they learn that she is not visiting.

A warm, smoky haze permeates the broad meeting hall, where three half-orcs lean over a table covered in a map and painted wooden tokens. To the left stands a pensive woman in simple clothing with a book hanging from her belt and a leather satchel brimming with paintbrushes at her feet. To the right towers a man wearing a blue and white robe, smiling slightly and touching a butterfly-shaped amulet as he ponders the situation. In the center is a battle-hardened warrior who grips the table as she looms over the map, as if she were a predator gazing at unsuspecting prey.

The older half-orc announces, "The Pathfinders have arrived." Turning to you, he introduces each of the councilors in turn. "Councilor Suota Iron-Tongue, Councilor Bravok, and COuncilor Kalla Tusk-Breaker." With that, he takes his leave.

Bravok speaks up first. "So why is it that the Pathfinders are visiting at this time? And who might each of you be? Usually we deal with Calisro."

With the matter of Benarry's absence explained, Kalla moves on discuss the upcoming plans. "We invited Benarry to join us in our attack on the giants but under the circumstances you will do and we will try our best to make you feel part of the community."

Suota is about to answer Buckwheat when Kalla cuts back in. "Chief Gorgnak has lost control of some of his tribe to another giant, and he is spending so much attention trying to reclaim command that he has left himself undefended here and here." Councilor Kalla fiercely prods the table, causing several of the nearby tokens to bounce. "In the meantime, several of his other giants have driven off our scouts to the west and diverted or dammed the Little Thunder. It's our main source of fresh water, but our cisterns are still full enough that I'm not worried for the moment."

"That's where you come in. While I lead our forces around the north, you can check the river and see what mischief the giants have caused there. Our attack should prevent any reinforcements from arriving, so once you're done at the river, you should meet minimal opposition in exploring the ruins. Familiarize yourself with our plan, and we shall make ready to set out at dusk."

Councilor Iron-Tongue loudly clears her thrat, and Kalla scowls for a moment before adding, "The scout who reported the ruins never returned. He sent a messenger bird back to us with the general location, but we have not heard from him since. Hagal is cunning, but deep in hostile territory."

You can gain some influence with the councilors during this meeting.

  • Improve the Battle Plan: KN (geography) or Profession (soldier); if you are proficient in at least one martial weapon you may instead use 1d20 + BAB + (Int or Wis modifier); bonuses on attack rolls against giants may be added to this as well, as may favored terrain (mountain).
  • Impressing Councilor Kalla Tusk-Breaker: Kalla leads the town gaurds and oversees the patrols around Averaka. You can match her tough demeanor with Intimidate, demonstrate knowledge of outdoor skills with Survival, or judge which parts of the plan worry her most and address them with Sense Motive.[/ooc]
  • Impressing Councilor Bravok: Bravok serves as Averaka's chief ambassador, traveling throughout the Inner Sea region to spread the word of Averaka and attract more half-orc settlers to the island. Bravok also manages the town's largest temple, devoted to Desna. Tactful overtures (Diplomacy) and confident speeches (Perform: oratory) resonate well with his style. He also respects those who connect on a religious level (Knowledge: religion).[/ooc]
  • Impressing Councilr Suota Iron-Tongue: Suota maintains Averaka's lore and society, serving as a teacher for children, artists, and craftspeople alike. She promotes curiosity and education. Siruss bobs his head eagerly at the meeting, dispatching his nagaji servants to provide free samples to all in attendance.

His eyes narrow as he sizes up Kalla Tusk-Breaker as Averaka's most likely leader to get his oils in the hands of every half-orc needing to polish their tusks or condition their copious back-hair.

"Yesss.... Mistress Kalla remind Sirusssss of naga matriarchssss back in Nagajor... very commanding, very dissssiplined."

As the evening bears on, Siruss demonstrates his own "command" of his nagaji in an attempt to impress Kalla and make in-roads into Averaka for his trade.

Just one for now. There will be a couple more chances.

Overall the councilors seem impressed with your courtesy and tactical knowledges. "Very well," they respond to Oxirane. "Perhaps we can divert a few troops closer to you to relieve some of the pressure in that area. Should keep you out of the thick of things."

Iron-Tongue discusses the local scene with Buckwheat. "If you make it back in time, we generally have quite the celebration when our troops come home. You might find the festivities to your liking."

Daylight spills in through the main door as an elven woman slips into the building. Despite wearing loose garments better suited for desert travel, she seems unperturbed by the cold. A gleaming holy symbol hangs from her waist.

"Ah, Dhiara," declars COuncilor Bravok. "We were not expecting you for several hours. How did you-"

"I ran," the elf states matter-of-factly. "These islands have an austere beauty, but with giants on the move, there was no time for dawdling. Have I arrived in time to assist?"

"Of course," Bravok replies. "Pathfinders, may I introduce Dhiara, paragon of Tar Kuata and most recently Scourge of Tanglebriar. She arrived unexpectedly with the intention of aiding our battle, and we are proud to have her."

The elf momentarily scowls. "Titles encourage complacency by dwelling on the past, dear Bravok. We must prepare for the trials ahead."

You can attempt another check to impress the councilors and you can also try to gain influence with Dhiara. She responds well to calm, measured arguments (Diplomacy), especially those that relate to her dedication to Irori (Knowledge: religion). She respects those who are well traveled and have learned lessons from the places they have seen (Knowledge: geography).

Let the war council continue!

The nagaji swiftly whip into shape, donning looks of worry and concern (perhaps for their families?) as Siruss barks orders in their halting language. Some even begin to empty bottles of Siruss Happy Floor Cleaning Agent onto rags and begin cleaning the premises. A nagaji child begins to cry before a trio descend upon him and the wail is quickly silenced. Shoes throughout the room begin to shine and sparkle. Belt buckles are polished. Long hair becomes shiny and well-conditioned.

Siruss stands, arms crossed, and bobs his head up and down at Dalla.

Baaldryn is ignored as Kalla does not seem particularly impressed with is insights but the councilors seem quite impressed with everyone else. Kalla nods at Siruss' attention to detail. To Bizzle and Oxirane, Dhiara responds, "I have spent the past several decades traveling the world, combating evil, and testing my skills against the Inner Sea region’s villains. When I heard of the trouble here, it seemed a worthy test and just another in a string of evil villains to be eradicated. You arrived before I did so perhaps you have had more time to think. On the way to the War Council, George sees a glare of white light down the hallway and, in his current 'affected' state, he wanders after it.

--Two hours later--

George stumbles into the war room as the group is making nice with the half-orc leaders. From behind his polished obsidian mask, two bloodshot eyes stare out, unblinking.

"I have returned." he says, wanting to take another round with his hookah.

The councilors nod at Siuss and the others. Kalla says, "Every military leader always questions their plans, perhaps more than they should. With your alterations it is as solid a plan as any. Thank you for your help."

Bravok nods to George. "Some will take that relative stance, yes. I still maintain that doing harm to others is evil no matter the intention. And even in the case of Geb, I do not think their intentions wholly benign either. But that is a matter for another time. Still, your thoughts intrigue me."

Souta seems to be affected by the smoke-cloud wafting from Buckwheat's general vicinity and nods along with his plans.

With that, Councilor Kalla ends the war council and encourages everyone to get some rest before departing at dusk in a few hours. Averaka is sizable enough that you purchase some moderate supplies (1500 gp or less). Once you are ready, you are to set out with a small force of half-orcs and Dhiara in tow.
