Brissa waves her hand. "Oh, forget the fee. But you seem like connected types. To be honest, I've been a bit frustrated lately by the Technic League, which has gradually thrown its weight around and bullied residents, and the more cutthroat merchants who exploit loopholes in order to operate nearly tax-free; the latter I allow only because it represents a well-thought-out business plan. But if you can promise to help me stymie these exploitations, I'll write your letter and I'll do it for free."
Shel Whispertongue PFS |
"He's right. Kicking at the Technic League and teaching them a lesson would be our pleasure, trust me."

Placing a hand on her shoulder, "Calm little sister. Lets hear what the high priestess requests, first. We do have, . . . other priorities, after all. Someone in need of our help."

Maps nods. "We'll help. Details?"
Having encountered the brutal Technic League before, Maps would at first assume some form of strong-arm tactics would be necessary, but since Brissa is a merchant, and a priestess of Abadon, he suspects he has something else in mind.
Probably bribery or blackmail.

Ingret Jol’s tavern, the Silver Lining, is in the Fleshward. The light breeze blowing down from the Lake of Mists and Veils is barely enough to keep the air breathable in the Fleshward. The stink of so many bodies in packed living conditions combined with the poor drainage making for a pungent stew. While market stalls and storefronts still crowd the streets here as in the rest of the city, the clientele are of a noticeably rougher cut. Small scuffles sometimes create small pockets in the press of bodies, which the locals rarely pay a second glance—as if these altercations were part of everyday haggling.
Not too long after you enter the Fleshwards, you pass one such altercation. Several ruffians encircle a dwarf and physically jostle him between them. The dwarf is young, just barely out of adolescence.

"Hey! Stop that at once" as I point out the young dwarf to the others, then begin running in that direction. Not sure just how crowded this part is, or if I can, but I'm trying to run into the circle to stand in front of the young dwarf.
"What is going on here?!"

"'Mene Mene Tekel Upharsin...' no, no, not at all, perhaps some mortal thieves' cant."

Maps is not the type of man who meddles in the affairs of random strangers. But he is well aware of the Pathfinder penchant for doing so, and the oath he took to cooperate with others in the Society.

The dwarf stands up a bit straighter. "Thank you for that. My name is Andar Jor. I was just trying to drum up business for his dear aunt’s tavern. Guess I got in the way of the wrong people. Wow! Is that a real firearm?" he asks Maps. "And you all have such nice armor! And weapons! Sheesh, you must have a tale or two about how you got them. Care to tell?"

Back to present time:
Andar answers, "Well, yes! Ingret would be my aunt, the one I was talking about. Come, this way." He starts leading you down the street towards her tavern.
Along the way, you regale Andar with some quick stories about the adventuring life, which he eats up with delight. Eventually he brings you to the Silver Lining.
The dockside area of the Fleshward is littered with seedy inns and rundown taverns, catering to the city's rough, downtrodden, and undesirables. The Silver Lining stands out as a cut aove these other establishments. not one of its windows is broken, its door sits square on well-fitted hinges, and its front sign proudly displays a fresh coat of pain. The patrons within are a quiet lot, mostly dwarves, and a few humans. A dwarven woman tends bar, where she does a brisk business in porters and stouts.
Andar leads you right up to the bar. "Aunt Ingret! These are some friends I've just met. They've been telling me the most wonderful stories; they're from the Pathfinder Society, can you believe that?"
Ingret's eyebrows raise a bit at the newcomers in her bar; clearly she mostly serves regulars and doesn't yet know how to take you.
You will need several Diplomacy checks here. Don't forget about your letters of introduction; those will give you bonuses, as will befriending Andar.

Motioning to have the letters of introduction handed over to Ingret, he continues. "Another friend, Brissa, sends her regards, and these letters." Pausing to let her read over the letters, he then hands over the elixir. "Also, Vel, whom we met already, asked that we give you this elixir." Nodding to Andar, he says. "Your nephew is quite amiable, a good lad."
Shel Whispertongue PFS |
Shel adds to the discussions with the bar keep. "Greetings, Ingret. Your nephew is right. We are from the Society. We need your help with a private matter. To show you we are the honorable sort, we have collected a letter of recommendation from Brissa, from the church of Abadar, and your nephew can tell you how we helped him out of a scrape earlier. We also have a note from the alchemist (forgot his name), that vouches for our character. Would you be willing to help us out?"

Lol! A fresh coat of paint that is.

Ingret looks over the letters and considers what you have to say. After inquiring as to what exactly you are searching for, she hesitates for a moment before saying, "Fine! Fine! I'll tell you as much as I know, just give me a moment to clear out the bar." She puts her fingers to her mouth and blows a shrill whistle to get her patrons' attention. "Out!" she barks. In moments, the tavern is empty of all other souls. Ingret looks around meaningfully, and after a long pause she reaches under the bar and comes up with a small chest. With a key from under her apron, she unlocks the chest, removes the contents-a small, worn, leather-bound journal-and hands it over.
"There it is," she says. "It's my great-grandpapa's journal. He went looking for the heirloom that came from Jormurdun, carried here by our honored ancestor Prince Toggrim. I remember as a child sitting on great-grandpapa's lap hearing him spin tales about going down to that ruin to see with his own eyes where our Toggrim hid that piece of the Sky Key. It's all there in that journal. A map's there, too, I think."
Shel Whispertongue PFS |
Shel skims the journal. "Wow, that's very detailed. I think we could follow those directions without too much trouble. Thank you so much, Ingret. We will stop back by here after our mission is done, and tell you what we found.."
Ignatious the Seeker of Flame |
"Indeed, very kind of you. Do you mind if we keep this for a bit? I know some folks that might want to have a look, to piece together more of the lore of your people."
"Do you know much of you great-grandfather? Anything that might help us that might not be in the journal?"
Flipping though, "Hum, it says he journeyed south along something, the Sellen, before turning to the west on the night of the second day.. . . Oh, that doesn't sound good. You all may not like this. A blasted lands and darkness."
Looking up at the Pathfinders, "Are you certain you wish to continue? I'm uncertain your souls can endure this. It seems that the way leads to a pit with a blasted land shrouded in some sort of blackness."

Ingret shakes her head. "You can borrow the book, certainly, but I'm afraid that book contains all the information I have. I truly know nothing beyond what I've read in there. I've never gone searching myself though."
Lucija can ascertain from the evidence that the Jor family might have descending from the Prince directly, thus the mention of noble blood. She is not sure about the trees.

Suddenly the front door of the Silver Lining explodes inward in a blast of concussive force. From outside the cloud of dust and splinters, a thin, nasally voice calls out, "Jor! Jor! I know you're in there. The League is done playing games. Surrender your secrets or die with them!"
As the smoke clears you can see an armored mage with an accompanying gearsman forcing their way into the tavern. Behind them are a pair of lesser agents and a woman in red robes. You hear another blast in the back of the tavern.
