Before you can get too far working on the portals, a sound is heard from one of the vents above in the center of the ceiling of the room. A giant tech-laden salamander-like creature descends through the vent using a jet pack. He lands in the middle of the room followed by four small fire mephits. He wastes no time pulling a pistol on you. "I will be going back to the City of Brass today. I don't care who you are, you're standing in my way."
You can see now that lights above the portals have begun to activate; there are six lights in all above each one although not all are lit up. Each portal has only some of its lights activated:
You can use the control console on the raised platform, manipulating its controls to shut down the portals. This requires two consecutive full-round actions while adjacent to the console and a successful DC 20 Knowledge (engineering) or DC 25 Disable Device check; up to two creatures can aid another on the check by studying the display panels and their readouts. If successful, a randomly determined active portal deactivates completely.
Second, you can physically destroy a portal (hardness 15, 30 hp), but damaging an active device comes with risks.
Finally, each portal has integral magical elements, and a PC can shut down the portal using dispel magic or discharge (Technology Guide 9). A portal’s caster level is equal to 3 + 1 per charge.

Salamanders are native to the Plane of Fire, where their legions of fierce warriors are much feared by the other inhabitants of the plane. Because some of the stronger elemental fire races enslave salamanders for their metalworking skill and fighting prowess, the salamanders hate the efreet and other inhabitants with a passion.
Though their lairs typically hover in temperatures of 500 degrees F or more, salamanders can tolerate lower temperatures. They generally do so only when forced, and are even surlier and more short-tempered than normal in such environments. Although they hail from the Plane of Fire, the salamander race identifies more with the Abyss, and they hold demons (particularly those associated with fire, like balors and certain fire-themed demon lords) in great esteem. It's not unusual to encounter large groups of salamanders in the Abyss as a result.
Salamanders have DR/magic, immunity to fire, and vulnerability to cold.

@Bizzle: getting off the ground will prevent you from taking 2d6 every round but the 3 rounds of damage represents the lava stuck to you even after you stand up from it I guess.
