A young man enter in the hall

Be Abadar's Blessing upon you fellow pathfinders. I'm Nicklod Vassily, cleric of Abadar.

Nicklod is a young man in his early twenty. Dispite his blond air and emerald green eyes he has typical chelaxian's features.
His beardless face is sweet and friendly.
Around his neck, a golden symbol looking like a key.

"Hoy," greets a Vudrani human woman with henna tattoos on her hands, wearing yellow and black silks under a steel breastplate; a coiled whip hangs from her belt. As she turns her head to survey her fellow Pathfinders, a birthmark on her neck is clearly visible, in the shape of Calistria's triple ring of daggers.

She smirks at Nicklod. "One of Abadar's boys, eh? I've seen quite a few merchants with that key, not a bad lot," she says with a wink, in a way that implies those meetings went better for her than for the merchants.

A ferocious, possibly mentally unhinged tiefling with wild, bestial eyes sits on a bench in the hall. It is obvious that he has some draconic features, as well as the infernal characteristics typical of tieflings.

He is trying to pay attention to the assignment, but seems to be having some difficulties.

Listen to me, and you will take power from others...beyond your wildest imagination...revel in it!

No...there is another path...one where you control your own destiny...

The tiefling appears, at times, to be possessed. He seems to be having an episode now. His erratic behavior is unnerving, and his shifty eyes stare at the others for a moment, though he does not appear to see them.

Finally, he shakes his head wildly and seems to come to himself. He looks darkly at the others, but does not speak to them.

The human dressed in the light armor sits quietly in the corner. He waits patiently for the Venture Captain to issue his orders, sipping on a glass of ale as he does so. He didn't have quite as many weapons as most of the others, but seemed nonplussed about that fact.

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

You meet in the lobby of the Overflow Archives, one of the Grand Lodge's outbuildings on the main campus in Absalom. You are met there by Master of Scrolls Kreighton Shaine, head of the Dark Archives Zarta Dralneen, and another Pathfinder who must be a lower initiate.

“I have no love of puns,” announces a peeved Kreighton Shaine, the Master of Scrolls in the Grand Lodge, “Yet it cannot go unremarked that the Overflow Archives have begun living up to their name.” The pale elf gestures across the library’s stone lobby toward a pair of shut double doors from beneath which water steadily seeps. He is only one of the midnight visitors bearing witness to this disaster. Next to Shaine, Paracountess Zarta Dralneen stands with folded arms, glaring at an initiate whose hair and clothes are utterly drenched. All three speak at once, but Shaine’s shrill voice rises above the din. “Magical shenanigans in the archives are prohibited, especially this soon before the Grand Convocation!”

“Let us prioritize,” Dralneen suggests. “Are the artifacts within the vaults in danger?”

“How should I know?” Shaine barks back. “This delinquent initiate—what was the name? Wormell?”

“Virml, sir,” replies the sodden Pathfinder.

“Virml says he sneaked into the archives on a dare,” summarizes Shaine, painfully emphasizing the initiate’s name with scolding disdain. “Presumably, he thought the holdings would be harmless. Instead, in his naivete, Virml triggered some dormant curse or other. So, yes, thanks to Virml here, the archives and the vaults below continue to flood, threatening all the books therein.”

Miserably, Virml holds up an armload of soggy manuscripts. “I salvaged a few, sir.”

Sighing, Shaine leads Virml towards the stairs. “Take them up to the scriptorium. Start making dry copies.” Then, turning to survey the rest of the room, he continues issuing orders. “The remainder of you should wade in there and plumb the origins of this deluge. Stop it, if you can. I must report this debacle to my colleagues and begin organizing the cleanup.” Abruptly, he seems to notice the paracountess for the first time. “What are you doing here, Dralneen?”

Zarta smirks and shrugs. “Unlike you, Shaine, I love a good pun.”

If you have any questions, now is a good time.

Virml sheepishly relates, “I…I merely picked up a wee scroll, read part of it aloud for fun—some kind of riddle about birds and fish? And then it flew to bits in my hand, and I caught the quickest glimpse of a handsome man…and then ker-sploosh! I washed out here!”

Zarta looks about to answer the question but Kreighton Shaine cuts her off. “Our delinquent initiate here is vague on the details so I don't know how exactly it was triggered or how this riddle scroll he mentions worked. But clearly, some unclassified item in there must have borne a well-concealed curse.”

Virml feebly volunteers that he rescued a few texts before Shaine interrupts. “Don’t waste your time with the individual pieces. You must arrest the flood at its source—or reverse it, if possible.”

Shaine then sighs and asks, "Do I look like a sponge? Enchant some buckets if you have to, just fix it."

If you are done with questions:

Shaine leaves the building through the west doors, and Virml heads upstairs to the scriptorium to copy the soaked tomes. Before he goes though, he gives you a waterlogged scrap of parchment that was once part of a scroll. "This might've been part of the one I was reading...." He then scampers off so as not to provoke Kreighton Shaine's ire again.

The scroll is written in Sylvan. Here is the scroll fragment (also linked at the top of the page).

Zarta stays behind for a moment to speak with Nicklod, Vespaja, and Insidion:

Dark Archive people!:

“The Dark Archive thrives by the good graces of the Decemvirate and Ambrus Valsin, yet I can tell that some still doubt our ability to handle truly dangerous relics and the rare disaster like this. As a result, there remain many storerooms barred to our comprehensive study, including the Overflow Archives—until today, that is. It is critical that you minimize the damage to these archives and do so in as professional a manner as possible. If I can demonstrate that my agents are capable and trustworthy, we may win permission to study the truly mysterious treasures beneath the Grand Lodge.”

She shrugs and smiles before continuing. “That said, I know that there is more than junk beyond those doors. I’ve heard that someone squirreled away a copy of The Darklands Precepts somewhere in there, and it’s far too dangerous a tome to leave lying about. Get it out of there and return it to me, no matter what excuse Shaine might make to toss it back in the pile.”

With nothing left to do but head in, you let yourself in to the Overflow Archives!

This spacious library is a damp catastrophe. A lake of dark water clogged with books, scroll cases, and a few overturned shelves obscures the floor. Steps descend into the brine from the western doors, while at the east end of the room a spiral staircase rises from the water to a mezzanine above. The same metal staircase must descend into a basement below as well, for the water there burbles downward in a dark, lazy whirlpool.

Two birdlike fey—one owl-faced, the other resembling an albatross—have converted a mahogany bookshelf into a fishing boat. As you arrive, the pair are casting their crude fishing rods near the spiral staircase. "You're disturbin' our bestest fishin’ spot!" the owl-faced one calls out.

DC 11 KN (nature):
According to some fey ballads, gathlains were one of the first peoples awakened in the primal world of fey. They were created from the seeds of an enormous magical tree, with the tree's mistletoe grown into their flesh forming their strange wings.

Michievous and capricious, these creatures have discordant temperaments. They act purely to entertain themselves and sate their immense curiosity about the world around them. That very curiosity has caused many to migrate to the Material Plane and adventure there.

No DR like most fey. They can entangle and feather step as spell-like abilities.

Rhoswen looks on bemusedly. I'll never get over the strange things that show up in my work for the Society.

Not especially wanting to join in on the threats, the elf instead helps Nicklod with collecting the scrolls. Though as Fahd points out the need of the bird-folks' scroll, she asks, "You mean the one they're holding? Maybe we could let Nicklod try and sweet-talk them again. I'm afraid that though I'm able to prove my prowess in battle quite readily, I don't present quite the intimidating figure normally. Nor am I the best at negotiations, but I'll be happy to assist."

before saying anything, Nicklod asked Vespaja What are these creatures? Can we try to speak to it ? To negotiate ?

Vespaja lowers her voice and whispers back, "Gathlains. Potentially some of the first fey, according to the old songs. Mostly harmless--more mischievous and curious than anything else."

As the fey continue their prattling, Vespaja frowns in thought, considering the scroll fragment they already possess. She whispers once more to Nicklod and Rhoswen as the others attempt the gambit with the gold coin. "I've only ever heard of gathlains in old ballads--and here we find two of them that match the description from our scroll perfectly, fishing line and hungry 'sleeper' included. I'm not sure what trickery this is, but it seems some magic or foolishness has made flesh what existed only in lore. In any case, I think we'd need to get more of that scroll to be sure."

Vespaja joins in with the others in trying to trick the fey. "My horned friend, surely you're not willing to part with that coin? Shouldn't we keep it for ourselves, to use its powers to ward off the 'Sleeper'?"

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Albatross and Owl give each other sideways glances and try to speak quietly to each other although you can clearly overhear them:

"It looks like a nice coin."

"I know. . . better than this soggy paper."

"Do we even need it any more now that smartypants is gone?"

"No, but they don't know that."

Albatross turns back to you, "Eh hem! So! I don't think you quite realize the value of this magnificent paper we have here! You are getting quite the deal."

Owl follows up, "Yes, but because you have been such good friends-"

"And aren't eating us." Albatross interrupts.

"Yes, and that." Owl continues. "For our new friends, we will gladly make the trade! Here, bring us that special gold and we will give you this sog-er-softened! paper."

The scroll fragment contains a few more verses in Sylvan.
