Chasik, quickly wipes the disgusting and vile tongue off him. He then moves forward, gets a good strong grip on his hammer and takes a swing with all his might. He slips, uncharacteristically as he swings, and the hammer crashes down into the floor...s very subtle vibration can be felt as his hammer leaves a dent in the floor.

Slinging his bow over one shoulder and sheathing his blade over the other, the elf moves to follow the party down the stairs.

The party readies themselves and moves down the stairs:

An open, winding stairway encircles the fifteen-foot-tall statue of a staglike creature with backward-facing horns and fiery hooves, sculpted as though it was ascending skyward through the opening to the floor above. Rich tapestries adorn the walls, and a pair of statues depicting noble samurai flank each of the four doors found at each corner of the room. Against the south wall, a railed stairway heads down.

DC 17 Knowledge (arcana):
You can identify the statue as that of a kirin, a supernatural creature known for its benevolence and command of magic.

A turtle-like creature crouches in the chamber, awaiting you. "Greetings!" he begins, speaking in Common, "And congratulations on a battle well-fought. Welcome to Shen-Shu. I am King, the custodian of this place. Who, might I ask, are those before me?"

DC 20 KN (nature):
He is a kappa, a monstrous humanoid native to these parts of Tian Xia. The basin atop a kappa’s head contains water from its home river or lake. The water is emptied only if the kappa willingly tips its head or a creature pinning the kappa forces it to do so (requiring a grapple check while pinned). If the water is emptied, the kappa becomes immobile and staggered. It can still take its own actions, but it can’t move from the spot on its own. If the emptied head bowl is refilled with water, the kappa recovers from this condition immediately. This replacement water doesn’t have to be from the kappa’s home, but the kappa refills its head bowl from there at his first opportunity.

Once in the chamber, Caradeum bows to the creature. "Greeting Master King. It is an honor to meet you. I have never met a kappa before. We are merely scholars in search of lore about Shen-Shu. We had heard there were others here, defiling this place. Do you know anything of that?"

The strange turtle creature nods his head slowly, "Hrm, yes, defiling is a good way to put it. I am allowed this chamber and those connecting. But there are boggards, masked servants, and enormous, blubbery people regularly entering and leaving Shen-Shu. . . defiling as you put it, hrm."

"What lore do you hope to learn here? What is it that you seek?"

Kappa tend to be chaotic and play tricks on those who pass near their homes, but this one certainly does not seem to fit that measure.

"Ah, yes! Discoveries! Well, there is a room below, one of the largest rooms, that is a vast sea of gold that burns like fire. The boggards recently broke in but fled from something within."

The kappa nods his head in thought for a moment, the water in his head dome splashing back and forth. "How much do you plan to explore? There are dangers below, as you can guess."

"I see, I see," the turtle creature muses. "Not immediately under water, no, but several doors and barricades keep the swamp beyond at bay, and opening them invites trouble. There is a room with a tapestry; do not open the eastern door. There is also a barricade that is obvious; be wary of this."

King thinks for a few more seconds. "So who did you say you are again? Explorers? Of what kind? Are you friend or foe to Lord Rybos and the others who dwell here?"

The kappa nods his head slowly and responds, "Yes, yes, I have heard of this flute. My ward Hamade Sora had it before he disappeared-likely captured by Lord Rybos's thralls and taken below. A crown? I do not know this one specifically, but I recall seeing a crown down in the golden treasury below."

His mood darkens somewhat when speaking about the last item though. "Why do you ask about Wise Zijao's Seal? I must know why you seek it."

Another Diplomacy will be needed on that last bit.

"Hmmmm," King considers this point. "I have been keeping Wise Zijao's seal safe myself. A sense of duty held me to it, as I feel it is a priceless component to the art collection I have been gathering. Hmm, hmm." He considers for a moment longer, scratching his chin. "But if you are the philanthropists you claim to be-and I have no reason to doubt you-then, yes, perhaps it would be safer with you or your friends. Come, let me show you."

King the kappa leads you over to one of the corner rooms and opens the door to reveal statues, tapestries, and all manner of artwork. A life-sized statue of a contemplative sage holds Wise Zijao's seal in his open hands. The seal does not detect as magical, but the image it creates is an extraordinarily intricate pattern of dots and curving lines that depict a kirin in mid-leap.

The party heads down the stairs!

A trickle of water seeps through the closed door on the east side of this small, fifteen-foot-high antechamber. A moldering tapestry hangs from floor to ceiling along the south wall, while to the north a closed wooden door remains relatively dry despite the dampness. A heavy stone hatch rests open against the southwest wall, revealing a slick staircase carved from the bedrock that descends into the darkness below.

The dry door to the north leads to another small room outfitted like an office with a small desk and cabinet. Inside the cabinet you find a wand of resist energy with 10 charges remaining (CL 7th).

Assuming you don't touch the water-logged door after King's warning:

You head down the stairs and find a series of short flights of stairs switchbacking downward. Each landing bears a soggy tapestry whose designs are no longer discernible. At the bottom of the stairs is an unlocked wooden door.

Behind the door a twenty-foot-tall hallway seems to have once been a major intersection with passageways in all directions. A heavy pile of wood and debris partially barricades a ceiling-high set of stone doors that lie to the east, and shattered chunks of rock and dried mud block the way south. A wide flight of stairs rises to the north, terminating in a set of double doors.

The doors straight ahead have been hastily barricaded but after about 3d4 ⇒ (2, 3, 3) = 8 minutes Bash is able to clear most of it away to lead the way in.

Eerie blue light plays across murals on the north, south, and east walls, each portraying a kirin flying through a raging storm. Coins of many shapes, materials, and origins form low heaps throughout this treasury, though in many places the coins have fused together or melted slightly to form extensive sheets of precious metals. A golden skeleton lies sprawled near the room’s entrance.

As you enter the room electricity begins dancing across the murals and you notice an uncomfortable but harmless buzzing sensation coming from the floor that causes your hair to stand on end.

Tens of thousands of coins cover the floor, though most are fused together or melted into sheets of many different materials; the sheets are too large to extract without hacking the mass into smaller pieces.

Wizzy notes several magic items are partly sealed in the metal, requiring a standard action and a successful DC 16 Strength check to extract them. In the northeast quadrant is a +1 light fortification o-yoroi, in the southeast quadrant is a +1 shock katana, and a charred, lacquered case near the room’s center contains a shocking robe.

One of the few metal art objects in this room to survive the intense energies is a mithral crown, the second Shu coronation crown.

Anyone have use for the katana or robe? Wizzy, would you find the robe useful? I may grab the katana as a back-up weapon.

As Bash starts trying to pry the items from the floor, the kirin in the murals suddenly transform into bolts of electricity that lash out into the room and coalesce as four kinin-shaped forms of electricity!

They are lightning elementals. DR/- and immunity to electricity. They also have metal mastery, granting them bonuses against foes wearing metal armor and gain bonuses on most combat maneuvers against such foes.

My DR, do I subtract 2 from the slam damage as well as from the electricity damage, or is it just from the slam damage? I just took it off my slam damage, so the total was 26 points damage.

Chasik, wearing all his heavy armor, is a lightning rod, so to speak. He takes two slams to his chest, and his hair stands on end after each one.

Chasik, grits his teeth and takes another two swings at the elemental he had just pounded.
