The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

You are in Katheer at the Pathfinder lodge operated by Venture-Captain Esmayl ibn Qaradi, who is abroad but has left written instructions:

Pathfinders,

As the seasons change and the fickle winds alter their course to bring rain to a parched land, so too do the Ten once again turn their eyes toward Qadira and its riches. Sadly, the circumstances are tragic, not celebratory. Trade Princess Zarmina Bahjari, mentor and aunt-by-marriage to the esteemed Trade Prince Aaqir al’Hakam, passed away recently, and the family is holding a wake for her at their estate in Katheer. The trade prince has asked a handful of agents to join him for this event, and I request that you do just that both as a show of solidarity for an important ally of the Society. I understand he also has other work for you that might prove quite lucrative, so as long he does not ask for anything too bizarre, I trust you will honor his requests as you would my own.

I am away on business, but I had another agent retrieve several worthy items from my personal vault. Please take one to offer to the family in the name of the Society and me during the wake.

Be civil,

Venture-Captain Esmayl ibn Qaradi

Their options include a silver-chased scimitar, a gold ring bearing three sapphires, or a steel shield bearing an image of Sarenrae painted in gold and studded with garnets.

They are magical but what exactly they are depends on the subtier, which we'll determine once we have all the players.

A small red haired gnome (all thought his hair color is difficult to determine most of the time since he will be covered from head to toe in ash, soot and other blackish stuff) looks around the room

"Nice to see you again Ennoia. How've you been? Who are all these other people? I'm Ash. Who are you? Where have you been? Where are we going? Is that a note? Can I see it?"

..he also is a bit ...excitable and might have some impulse control issues

Slow down there! A Taldan man wearing freshly cleaned armor states as the gnome asks all of his questions. I am Jaysin Deckert, I'm sure you've heard of me. No doubt the Venture Captain here requested my services directly after hearing about how I single-handed saved a Blakros Wedding from falling apart and all that. I won't bore you with details since I'm sure you've read about it by now. Jaysin gets a better look at the gnome and then comments, Considering that we will be attending a wake you might want to invest in a bath... and some clothes.

The archer continues by addressing the rest of the group. I suggest we bring the ring as a gift. If you ask me that seems the most sensible item of those to choose from.

Near the Venture-Captain stands a lithe young woman with otherworldly looks. Long blond hair flow on her shoulders, with golden locks. Her eyes seem to be made of gold as well. She's covered in an outlandish-looking mithral armor, and seems to prize her darkwood bow a lot. As each and every person enters the room, the aasimar studies them carefully, as if trying to discern something a simple glance wouldn't reveal.

Smiling to the gnome, Ennoia shakes the small hand with a gentle smile. "Hello Ash, how good to see you again! How have you been? As for me I've just returned from a delve in a secret vault. You know, the usual: demons, devils, evil wizards..."

Turning to Jaysin, she bows politely. "Well met. I am Ennoia, humble servant of Falayna. I guess my goddess would agree with your choice, since rings are heavily symbolic in nature... though I'm at a loss to say what they'd represent."

I suspected it would be something like that, thanks EF. Yeah, Jaysin should have a great time in this one then.

Jaysin looks at the paladin and reconsiders his stance. Sighing, he says, Well, if it really seems to matter, we should take the scimitar. While I would have personally preferred something a bit more "religiously neutral", the scimitar is the weapon of the goddess Sarenrae. The Taldan turns away from the gifts and says as he does, But you probably already knew that. Bring it if you want. As a Pathfinder I should be more willing to take these facts into consideration.

    The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

    The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

By majority I think the scimitar it is then!

Once you arrive, servants of Zarmina's family see to your immediate needs and direct you to a study, where you are to meet Trade Prince Aaqir al'Hakam.

Dressed in a white linen robe tied with a silk sash, Trade Prince Aaqir al’Hakam stands behind a desk in this small study. He spreads his arms wide in welcome, though his face speaks to his fatigue and grief. “You are a welcome sight, Pathfinders, and I trust you are here at the behest of the esteemed Esmayl ibn Qaradi. As you can tell, this is not a day to uncover fresh secrets. Rather, it is one of mourning for Zarmina Bahjari—a noble trade princess, my mentor, and the reason I ever became a trade prince. I am here to see to her estate, act as executor of her will, and carry on her commercial interests.

“It may seem strange to engage in business during so somber an occasion, but trade happens quickly in Qadira; my late aunt by marriage would actually be disappointed were I not to wrangle her vulture-like competitors into submission. Even so, it would be unseemly for a member of Zarmina’s family to conduct business at her wake.

“Though I have inherited much from my mentor, I do not intend to sit idly and live off her successes. It is still my intention to strengthen trade routesthroughout the Inner Sea while making the Pathfinder Society my chief ally. I want you to stand as an example of what we have to gain by continuing to work with the western nations.

“For that reason, I requested the Society’s aid because we have only a brief window of opportunity to speak with our rivals and convince them instead to become our allies. There are five in particular that I would benefit from your attention, and I understand several of them maintain their own rivalries with one another. Win over as many as you can, and I shall speak with them afterward to negotiate any details. Is that agreeable?”

DC 10 KN (local or religion):
A typical wake begins as a somber affair, but it’s common for the mood to lighten as the sun warms the room and the living share stories about the deceased and comfort the surviving family members.

DC 15 KN (local or religion):
As dusk approaches, those in attendance wish the deceased peace through speeches and gifts that might accompany the deceased to the grave. Not only does this honor the dead, but it’s also an opportunity to comfort the living and remind those present to make the world a better place.

DC 20 KN (local or religion):
A less common funerary practice involves exposing the corpse to the sun for a week or more in conjunction with simple magic to prevent the corpse from decomposing. During this time, family and friends watch over the body to keep scavengers away.

"Temel Passad and Metella Rauger? I know them, we met on the Glass River... cruise we had a few months ago. We broke a deal with Metella Rauger and the dwarves. I hope she remembers me."

Played 5-01 with Ennoia, and we sided with Metella Rauger and the Five Kings Mountains at the time. I don't know if it can influence the scenario one way or another, just mentioning.

    The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

I think 05-01 was meant to influence this scenario but the reporting was a tie between the two so they brought them back to settle it and see who the Society sides with. Although I will take that into account when it comes up.

The Bahjari estate is located on the outskirts of Katheer, where its half-dozen buildings have ample space to sprawl across the family’s land. The largest building is the manor house, a two-story structure made of whitewashed stucco over stone. The home has several wings that fan out through well-maintained gardens to accommodate visiting merchants and other business-people. Most of its ceilings are 10 feet high, and the doors are made of strong wood. The entire manor is furnished, though the spacious rooms sometimes make the interior seem rather empty compared to that of a typical Absalom townhouse.

Before we really get going with the mingling, I'll give everyone a while to review the rules for gaining influence with the NPCs at the wake.

For those of you who have played Blakros Matrimony, it is similar except the "Sense Motive/random Knowledge checks to figure out their weak spot and gain a bonus" thing has been replaced by a "doing favors for them" thing.

    Gaining Influence:

Whenever the scenario allows the PCs to attempt an Influence check, the character may select one NPC in attendance to try to influence. Each PC can attempt a Bluff check (to pretend to be friendly), a Diplomacy check (to be genuine), or a different skill check mentioned in the NPC’s social stat block to appeal to that character’s other interests. The PCs can focus their efforts by using aid another actions to assist each other on a target, or split up to cover more guests. The GM might grant up to a +4 circumstance bonus on a PC’s check for particularly good roleplaying.

The PCs earn 1 additional Influence Point per successful check for every 5 points by which the check exceeds the listed. Once an NPC has been successfully influenced four times, he or she is considered friendly toward the party. Note that these rules override the standard rules for using skills to influence an NPC.

In addition, several NPCs have a favor they might request when a PC is trying to earn Influence Points. A PC can attempt to perform this task before attempting a check to influence the NPC. If he performs the task successfully, all of the PCs gain a +5 bonus on checks made to influence that NPC for the rest of the scenario.

    The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Sorry, lost electricity and then got really busy yesterday.

In addition to its honoring the deceased, Zarmina’s wake is an occasion for extended family and friends to reunite, reminisce, and renew their bonds. Several of these guests are only now arriving from abroad, though the Bahjari family has provided rooms for many out-of-town visitors who are already mingling in the manor’s entry hall. Aaqir al’Hakam accompanies you for several minutes to make the appropriate introductions to his family, including his spouse Emir Thalzar Gaatan and their three daughters. He also points out Umut Tepemkau, a visiting cleric of Pharasma and friend from Zarmina’s younger days whom her will specified should oversee her interment; al’Hakam notes that she is busy with preparations and might be available to chat later. Once he is sure you are at home, Aaqir excuses himself to speak with other guests and ensure that the funerary arrangements are taken care of.

Most of the guests are already present and chatting with one another, and they are scattered throughout the entry hall and the southern half of the temple.

When I did this before I found it infinitely easier to take this one check at a time so I have time to respond to everyone in character. So everyone can make one Influence check at this time. The people available to speak with are listed below.

Remember, you can use Bluff or Diplomacy, as well as the additional skill listed for each person. Try to make your RP match what you roll (using Appraise you should probably talk economics/business, etc). The DCs vary between people but are the same for that person no matter the skill used. I've put a brief description for each person (you can think of these as how Aaqir al'Hakam pointed them out to you when you arrived). Remember as you talk to them some of them might have favors you can perform to earn bonuses or extra Influence against that character. I will make the favors apparent after you've spoken to them.

    Temel Passad:
Temel Passad is a prophet of Kalistrade, an adherent to a strict set of personal codes that supposedly aid in one’s earning wealth. He is a clever man that the Society has dealt with before—typically under pleasant circumstances. His business ventures sometimes compete with those of the Five Kings Mountains, which has led to a rivalry with Metella Rauger.

    Additional Skill: Appraise

    Doritannia Raffella:
Doritannia Raffella buys and sells alcohol and spirits. She comes from a common household yet elevated her status through her own acumen and hard work, though she recently fell on hard times. No doubt her experience would be a valuable asset to any business venture.

    Additional Skill: Intimidate

    Metella Rauger:
Metella Rauger represents several trading houses from the Five Kings Mountains, and she has worked with the Society and its allies before. She’s stubborn but fair. No doubt she will be on edge here thanks to Temel Passad’s having decided to attend and honor Zarmina’s memory.

    Additional Skill: Profession

    Pellius Melkior:
Pellius Melkior is from Andoran and has established himself as a reliable trader of durable goods in his country. Rumor has it that he has also looked into expanding his business into the River Kingdoms and Taldor.

    Additional Skill: Knowledge (local)

    Jakti al'Awar:
Jakti al’Awar has spent much time abroad and only recently returned to Qadira. He maintains a small business in magic items, and some speculate that his travels and business are primarily for scholarly purposes. What is known is mostly speculation; he is something of an unknown here.

Additional Skill: Knowledge (religion) (he is wearing a holy symbol of Sarenrae)

Ok, everyone can make one check at this time. Tag-teaming and aiding each other is allowed or you can split up and each take a different NPC.

Jaysin overhears a conversation that Pellius Melkior is having. Upon hearing that the man was thinking of expanding into Taldor, the archer elects to enter the conversation himself.

Taldor, eh? Can't find a better lot of people to do your trading with, if I may say so myself. As for myself, I am Jaysin Deckert, of Taldor. If you have some time afterwards perhaps I can give you some insights to the land.

"Taldor, eh?" He is quick to laugh and makes a point of being especially friendly. "I will have to keep you in mind as a contact then. For the moment my business interests tend to align with Metella Rauger, unless I were to get a deal with your very own Aaqir al’Hakam, that is."

One influence earned! You've also learned that earning influence with Metella will also gain you influence with Pellius. He also really wants a deal with al'Hakam, although this will override your ability to get influence with him through Metella.

You can aid each other or you can each make your own check. You can earn extra Influence if you exceed the DC by five. I'll assume you guys did it separately.

Metella is a redheaded dwarf who wears a tabard emblazoned with the Five Kings Mountains heraldry. She’s unarmed for this event, though she often touches her belt with her right hand as a habit. She faces Kazzok squarely as he talks to her but she seems to relax a bit in the presence of a fellow dwarf. "Aye, fine craftsmanship is hard to come by. It's nice to find someone who takes pride in their profession as I do. Not like that idiot Temel Passad. He's a fool and has the annoying habit of sneezing uncontrollably at inopportune times. Nearly got me in trouble once. I brought along this itching powder to sneak into his snuff if I can pull it off. Ideally he'll take some during his funeral oration. It'd certainly make my day."

"Ah, but back to business. You seem like good folks and I like the Pathfinders. Whenever your Society wants to do business, let me know."

Four Influence earned! (Fully influenced.) You also learned her favor. Sleight of Hand to switch them out now or wait until night and use Stealth and Disable Device to sneak into his room and switch them. Since she's fully influenced I don't think it will affect anything other than being hilarious.

Jakti is large and somewhat physically imposing figure. He prefers to encourage others to speak their minds, patiently listening with a polite smile and an intense stare as he listens for admissions of past indiscretions. His holy symbol rests in a fold of his cloth belt. He finds religious discourse fascinating and cannot help but inquire about Ennoia's beliefs. He peppers with conversation with many interjections: "Fascinating! Really! Wonderful!"

After a moment he says, "Well, I will certainly consider business with the Society. To tell you the truth, I'm here on slightly different business. My intelligence has labelled Temel Passad and Metella Rauger as possible enemies of the Cult of the Dawnflower. I'd like to fluster them to reveal the true villains they are, but they are hard to get alone."

He pauses for a moment and looks around. "The sun’s heat has made the manor quite stuffy, yet the servants seem less than willing to open additional windows to let in more air. It would help, yes?"

    1d20 ⇒ 11

    DC 13 Sense Motive:
He wants you to ensure their windows are open so he or someone else can get in their rooms.

    Three influence gained.

    ----------------------

Kazzok approaches Pellius Melkior with what he thinks is a friendly smile.

"I hear that you're interested in expanding your trade into Taldor. As my associate correctly pointed out, Cassomir is full of opportunities, especially now that the blasted derros have been chased back into the Darklands. If your business ever takes you there, be sure to pay the local pathfinder lodge a visit. "Metella, how have you been! Do you remember me? I'm Ennoia, we met a few months ago when we liberated the emissaries from the Five Kings Mountains from the claws of these Razmiran bigots. It's great to see you again. Say, are you still looking for commercial contracts with the Society? I could arrange that, if you're willing to talk business in this hour of grief." she finishes in hushed whispers, unwilling to sound improper.
