Hello everyone!
If you have not read it yet, here is some good advice on PbP-ing.
Also, please post your PFS number and make a Day Job roll.
Thanks and we'll get started as soon as possible!

Day Job (Handle Animal): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13
Hmm, bad day on the farm...

Well I think we have four then. If that's good with everyone we can get moving tomorrow. Otherwise we can search around for two more before we start.
Desmond Aesculus |
I'm okay with starting tomorrow.
Desmond Aesculus |
So, is Maximo Interresante a play on the Dos Equis most interesting man in the world guy?
EndlessForms |
I miscounted! We actually have five. I'll go ahead and get the briefing up in a few minutes.
Tolgarov (10), Zhal (10), Maximo (8), Desmond (9), Arnoth (8)
APL = 9
Which means we play the high tier with four-player adjustments. Hopefully our level 8s are ok with that.
Starting with Season 4, scenarios are designed for six characters and contain instructions on how to adjust the scenario for four-character parties. When the APL of a table is between two subtiers (like APL 3 for a Tier 1–5 scenario), a party of four characters must play the lower tier without any adjustments for party size. A party of five to seven characters whose APL is between two subtiers must play the higher tier with the four-character adjustment.

Will need to update Zhal this afternoon. Did Mammoths a couple weeks ago, and have not leveled him up with his money after that scenario.
Which by the way, kind of sucked ass. But we made it out ok.
Desmond Aesculus |
Can I sneak in one more purchase?
bracers of falcon's aim 4000 gp
Desmond Aesculus |
Dang. I didn't bother to check. I was just looking for some fun things to buy. Makes sense though - those things are a pretty good deal for what you get.
C'est la vie.
EndlessForms |
I believe someone said there was supposed to be an extra 0 in there but for some reason it has never been updated/FAQ'd for PFS play.
Zhal Peng |
you know what makes life even more fun? When you are trying to update your character, and there is an update to hero lab for ipad that breaks it.
Desmond Aesculus |
Wait, breaks the character, breaks herolab, or breaks the ipad?
EndlessForms |
I just started using HeroLab and switching all my characters over a few weeks ago in anticipation of getting an iPad some time this winter. I also finally digitized my chronicles so I can carry them around on my future iPad rather than lug an entire backpack full of binders. After GMing every single scenario, an AP, and quite a few modules and playing nearly every scenario and quite a few modules, you can imagine how large that stack of sheets is. I literally have five binders full of character sheets and chronicles. Can't wait to have everything completely digitized so all I have to bring is my iPad.
Desmond Aesculus |
I've thought about going to herolab, but there's just something satisfying about filling out a character sheet with a dull pencil.
EndlessForms |
I think it is good to start out doing it by-hand (or my preferred fillable pdfs) because it forces you to learn the system more than you do just plugging stuff in on HeroLab. There's also the huge cost of HeroLab to consider. But when you've been playing as long as I have and are already comfortable with the system and have 20+ characters to keep track of, HeroLab is a fantastic convenience. And it will be even more so once I get an iPad and can just click on a feat or spell to pull up the text if I have a question about exactly how it works. It saves a lot of time to looking them up in a book or even typing them into a search engine or app on my phone.
Desmond Aesculus |
Yeah, I was being somewhat facetious. I actually really do enjoy filling out the character sheets by hand - pen or pencil. I usually do pencil and then go over with pen.
Then I keep my character sheets in sheet protectors in those little 3-tab presentation folders, with the chronicle sheets kept in the pockets (which are getting pretty full for Desmond.)
Of course, I also prefer having the hard copies of the books as opposed to the pdfs. The pdfs are far more convenient for those who bring a laptop or ipad to events, and I don't look down on anyone that uses them, but I just really like books.
Plus, since I never played any tabletop RPGs as a younger lad, I feel I need to pay my dues lugging around a bunch of hardcover books and player companions.
EndlessForms |
Yeah, I prefer having the physical copies of the hardcovers too and I still plan on lugging my bestiaries around to games (although not to GenCon-I printed the monster stats ahead of time this year and it really saved my back rather than hauling around four bestiary hardcovers plus my binders for four days straight).
And I like having the physical copies of the companions as well but I don't read them often enough and have been debating selling them off and using the money to buy the pdfs instead. Then I also have them available as proof of ownership for PFS purposes without having to remember which ones to bring.
But I like the hardcovers far too much to part with them over pdf copies.
Tolgarov |
I have all my stuff on my iPads. As I GM a lot and not at my home it's far easier for me.
But I prefer having crunch stuff in hardcover.
I've not yet numerized my chronicles but I will do it because :
1/ I play often on forum
2/ I play sometimes abroad (in the UK or in the US)
3/ Like EF, I have 20 characters and lots of chronicles !

Hey Endless,
I am going to ask a really dumb question.
The symbol that was identified, when I did earlier was identified as a symbol of pain, according to how I understood it.
I think the effect that you shot off is that for a symbol of weakness.
Just for clarification, which effect is it? Or are there in fact multiple symbols?
EDIT: Also, could I take my readied action to attempt to dispel the symbol?
EndlessForms |
You must have missed where I corrected myself on what type of symbol it was. I originally said Symbol of Pain but then corrected myself when I remembered that we were doing high tier.
Also, you can not ready actions outside of combat. Otherwise everyone would just walk around constantly readying actions which would destroy the purpose of rolling initiative.
Maximo Interresante |
Speaking of ready actions, didn't the dwarf sort of take one by pulling the covering off the symbol? If we didn't know what it was, then I could see that being a surprise, but Zhal was aware of the danger much earlier (not that it would have made too much difference with the way initiative rolled out).
EndlessForms |
You have a good point and I don't disagree with you, but I was running his tactics as they are written:
Drollis initiates combat by pulling the cover off the symbol in the room, or he pulls it during the first round of combat.
To me, that sounds like pulling the cover off is the initiator of combat but if you guys drew weapons first (for example) then he would do that as his first-round action. I could see it argued your way though.
And like you said, in this instance it wouldn't have made much difference. I'm not sure what type of action it is to pull a cover off of something but I would argue that it is a move action at most so all that really would have changed is he would have pulled the cover off after Desmond and Maximo took their first turns, which doesn't change anything.
Maximo Interresante |
He would have pulled the cover off after Desmond and Maximo took their first turns, which doesn't change anything.
Yeah, that's what I meant. No change really. But if Zhal had acted a little sooner he might have had a chance to dispel it (though I think the DC to dispel that symbol is probably pretty high).
Zhal Peng |
Yeah, and my dispel is on my cleric list, which i think is only caster level 8. Weakness is level 7 spell, so assuming minimum level, its like DC 24 to dispel, which is 11+13th caster level to use. That puts me at like a 20% chance to dispel which is not that great.
EndlessForms |
Yep, Theurges have plenty of good qualities but Dispel is not something they are great at.
Zhal Peng |
My main oversight was that he corrected the type of symbol, and I completely missed it. It was originally identified as a different one, which to me was not one that was a major issue to remove, whereas the one that hit us I would have done something about before hand.
But, it is what it is. And you boys seem to have everything well in hand. ;)
Desmond Aesculus |
Me too. I think Des may need to take a chance and stand up before too long. But I love the dirty trick.

Zhal Peng |
Endless,
Have a problem and just realized it a bit ago when I was trying to line out spells and such for Zhal.
I just realized I had not updated my profile with his current status. Zhal is listed in his profile as a level 10 character, and I have completed two chronicles, Waking rune, and Where Mammoths dare not tread, which gives him enough xp to be level 11. I was questioning why my skills and spells did not read correctly and this is why.
This is completely in midstream, and I do have the sheets for both games, though it might take me a bit to digitize them so you can see them. How do you want me to address this?
I have the Mammoths game that has been reported to Zhal, but the game of Waking Rune has not been, but was one I played with Faldoc on the forums right before Mammoths and this game.
EDIT: Game was run by GM Striker for Waking Rune.
EndlessForms |
I guess go ahead and update him and play the rest of the scenario that way. It's not like you've been able to do much yet anyways getting knocked out in the first fight, haha.
Zhal Peng |
Sure thing, any spell slots that are not currently listed, I am going to treat as being left open if that is ok, so since we are in a quasi prep state, i'm going to see what he gets slot wise, and will update that when i get home.
EndlessForms |
@Arnoth: Do you have a day job?
@Zhal: Can you please post your PFS number (or send it to me). Also, make a day job roll if you have one.
@Max: You can roll for your day job as well.
---
We're in the final combat so I'll start getting chronicles ready; I imagine we should be finishing up shortly.
EndlessForms |
I've noted that Arnoth and Tolgarov both spent 2 PP on atonement to fix their alignments when this is all done. If there are any other prestige or chipped-in-gold that you want me to mark, let me know.
